This is a continuation of the ME riddles thread; I'm not sure if it's necessary or not, but I tried several times to post replies on the last thread and couldn't see them, so was thinking possibly the thread has gotten overlong or something (or else my computer is messed up...) anyway if it turns out the first thread is working, we can continue posting on there smilies/smile.gif. For now though, I'll post my answers to the last thread here since the first one isn't accepting them...grrr...

Stephanos, the answer is indeed money - Samwise, I like your answer too, though smilies/smile.gif. They both fit, certainly.

Raefindel - I'm really sorry to hear about that, it must have been pretty miserable for both you. How old is your daughter? Hope she's mending fast.

Everyone - your riddles are fantastic but my poor brain is far too cleaned out right now to deal with them (working late, have a split shift tomorrow, grrr). Anyway I'll try to make guesses at them tomorrow when I have some sort of brain-wave activity going smilies/smile.gif. Time for this girl to go to bed.

And for a riddle to christen the (maybe) new thread; here's an old one.

The man who bought it didn't want it.
The man who used it didn't know he was using it.

What is it?

I guessed Coffin too but i've heard that one told differently.......same conclusion though so I guess it doesn't matter smilies/smile.gif

OOh good guesses guys! I'm not very good at riddles.

I'm glad you started a new thread Kalimac, I thought it was just me. I was answering Samwise' question about my daughter and thought it was being deleted because it had nothing to do with the thread.

Here's my riddle

I soar without wings
I see without eyes
I've traveled the universe to and fro
I've conquered the world and yet
I've never been anywhere but home.

And thank you all for asking, my daughter is fine now. She had pneumonia, and was hospitalized for 3 days. It ruined our vacation, but I can only say Thank God my husband was there to help me deal with it! It's too hard to do when he's at work.

Sorry for getting personal on this thread. I should have never brought it up to start with, but now that I have, I knew I had better answer your questions all at once and get it over with. I apologize.

Yes, it's a coffin. Your turn.

Still can't think of any answers, except possibly this one: Aragorn Husband of Arwen, is the answer to yours a dream? Since you're not conscious when you dream, and you're "in" the place, but not really.

Raefindel, I think yours has come up before - is it imagination? And I'm glad your daughter is doing better, that must have been really frightening for you. Don't worry about mentioning it; I had nothing wrong with it and doubt that anyone else did. (Besides, if you get to ask about my potential children surely we can ask about your current ones smilies/evil.gif ).

Just got back from work so I'm off to take a nap. Hope to catch you guys when I come posting this evening smilies/smile.gif.

Raefindel
04-06-2002, 03:53 PM
Yes, Kalimac, it is Imagination. Sorry I should have paid more attention. Didn't realize it had been posted before. There are too many pages to back and check now.

Thanks so much for starting a new thread, Kalimac!

I figured I'd re-post my riddle for your convenience:

Soft, heavy, or hard:
Found not in a lie
Yet everywhere am I
Shun me and you die...
Soft, heavy, or hard.

And here's a hint:
Think literally and use idioms.

I welcome any and all guesses!

Raefindel
04-06-2002, 05:49 PM
Boy, that's a tough one Nuranar. I'll have to think on that a while. smilies/rolleyes.gif

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 05:58 PM
Raefindel - I'm sorry, I hadn't meant to sound snarky about the riddle you posted - I don't remember all the riddles on the thread either, the reason I remembered this one was because I liked it so much. Mostly I'd mentioned it to let you know that this was not an unaided deduction on my part smilies/smile.gif.

Nuranar - Thank you, but dear lord. That's a really good riddle. The part that keeps tripping me up is "found not in a lie" otherwise I'd guess that it was water...

Nuranar
04-06-2002, 06:37 PM
But, my dear Kalimac, it IS water!!! Way to go! smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

As for the "not found in a lie," that's an approximate way of using the idiom "doesn't hold water." Sorry if that was really confusing.

Thanks, all, for saying it was a good, tough riddle--I made it up myself! It did take a while, though; actually, I thought up the three middle lines while I was in the shower. smilies/rolleyes.gif

Well, maybe I'll start working on another. Oh, boy! This is fun!

Aragorn Husband of Arwen
04-06-2002, 07:50 PM
Recapping my riddle:

I am at a place where I have never been, though one has, and one hasn't. What am I doing?

Your only hint, the "I" is me. I post the answer when I think yall give up, or yall say you give up.

Okay, since no one could guess the answer is....walking. Stand up. Put one foot forward, now stop. Notice one foot is in a place where you have never walked (well probably have) and the other is in a place you have. smilies/smile.gif

Samwise
04-06-2002, 08:22 PM
Whoa....Aragorn Husband of Arwen, I never would have guessed that!
"Well, I'm back."
Sam Gamgee

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 09:00 PM
Aragorn (can I call you that for short?) that was good. Never would have gotten that one in a hundred threads.

Nuranar - woohoo! Actually the "doesn't hold water" clue makes good sense - just hadn't quite wrapped my mind around all the ways water is used metaphorically. Actually I thought of the answer while I was doing dishes and thinking of how hard the water is here comparatively, and then...

Does anyone have any more? I'm trying to think of another which is slightly sneakier than my previous ones smilies/smile.gif.

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 09:44 PM
OK, here it is. Hope this one is a little more satisfyingly twisty smilies/smile.gif.

There are two of them, they are brothers
The second twice as large as the first
To know the second, you must meet the first
Although only the second is ever sought.
Every man meets them.

Who/what are they?

No, but you're on the right track smilies/smile.gif. Do you have a new one? (I've pretty much given up rhyming them for the moment; the grammar was getting too tortured smilies/frown.gif ).

Raefindel
04-06-2002, 09:55 PM
I have one, and let's hope I haven't already used it and have such a short memory I don't remember.

Ugh...I haven't been feeling really great today--one HAS been bumping around in my head, but I'm not sure of which way to put it.
"But I'm beginning to think it's time we got sight of that Fiery Mountain, and saw the end of the Road, so to speak. I thought at first this here Redhorn, or whatever its name is, might be it, till Gimli spoke his peice. "

Uh--Silence?

Truth and Justice?

(for the two riddles respectively).
It was Sam's turn that day to take the first watch, but Aragorn joined him. The silence grew until even Sam felt it. The occasional movements of his feet became loud noises. Sam could hear his own joints creaking, if he stirred.

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 10:01 PM
Oh, Raefindel, it didn't matter at all. And for your riddle I'm going to make a really weird guess, so please don't laugh too hard smilies/smile.gif.

What falls but never breaks is the mercury in a thermometer.
What breaks but never falls is a fever.

Hey, it sort of works.

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 10:05 PM
No, not truth and justice. They're definitely a pair in that vein, though smilies/smile.gif. I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well - hope it's just one those things that rest and tylenol will take care of...

It's a little more difficult to explain than that, I'm afraid. smilies/frown.gif It'll pass, though.
Not truth and justice? Um...
(let me try this quote again)
Sam looked up into the pale sky, fearing to see hawks or eagles hovering over them with bright unfriendly eyes.
"You do make me feel uncomfortable and lonesome, Strider! " he said.

Kalimac

Night and day sound good...can't think of anything else more likely, actually.

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 10:16 PM
Samwise, if you'd like a hint, they both start with the same letter smilies/smile.gif. And I do hope you feel better (sorry, I can't think of any other way to put that doesn't sound horribly cliched - could say an ave for you if you wanted, though).

Raefindel
04-06-2002, 10:24 PM
Well, you are doing very well for someone who doesn't feel wel, Night and Day it is! Thoug Kalimac's answer was a stroke of genius I thought!

I hope you feel better soon. Your up Samwise.

Hm....Only thing I can think of at the moment.....

I am strong enough to hold back the sun
yet I can be moved by the touch of a hand

Suddenly a low voice murmured:
"Gil-Galad was an elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of Heaven's feild
were mirrored in his silver shield..

But long ago he rode away
and where he dwelleth none can say
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are. "

The others turned in amazement, for the voice was Sam's.

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 10:32 PM
Congrats, Raefindel! You're going to have to start thinking up your own title soon, aren't you? smilies/smile.gif Glad you liked my silly thermometer - no idea where on earth that came from.

Samwise, nice work! [Kalimac gives Samwise a cyber-high five]

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 10:33 PM
Samwise - a hat? (or sunscreen, but that doesn't seem so likely).

Samwise
04-06-2002, 10:37 PM
Thank you, Kalimac.

Nope, neither of those. Thought it would be easier than that-- OH,WELL. smilies/biggrin.gif
"That's all I know." stammered Sam, blushing. "I learned it from Mr. Bilbo when I was a lad. "

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 10:40 PM
De nada, Samwise smilies/smile.gif.

Somehow I can't get away from the clothing/physical object answers though I've got a distinct feeling they're not right. Maybe a window blind?

Samwise
04-06-2002, 10:44 PM
Habla espanol, Kalimac? No es window blind, but es en una ventana. smilies/wink.gif
"There was a lot more," said Sam, "all about Mordor. I didn't learn that part, it gave me the shivers. "

Samwise
04-06-2002, 10:46 PM
Whoa--thought of another--got to write it down before I forget it.

I sit behind glass all day
until a child comes my way
he asks his mother for the key
which he uses to set me free!
But alas! My freedom is vain
It's a good thing I can't feel pain.
At that moment Sam came running back from the edge of the dell.
"I don't know what it is," he said, "--but I suddenly felt afraid. I durstn't go outside this dell for any money" I felt that something was creeping up the slope. "

You may call me Aragorn for short if you wish.

Okay here you go:
It is happening....
It doesn't happen very often...
Sometimes never...
It is day...
It is night...
At the same time....

What is happening?

Samwise
04-06-2002, 10:50 PM
An eclipse, sir?
Sam refused to leave his master. He came and sat, curled up at Frodo's feet, where at last he nodded and closed his eyes.

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 10:51 PM
Samwise, nope, unfortunately, that was one of the languages I didn't take smilies/smile.gif - wish I had, it's awfully useful. (I did a double major in Russian and German, if you'll believe it smilies/smile.gif. But my fiance lived in PR for six years so I've picked up a phrase or two. Khoroshii otvet! (Russian for "good answer" smilies/smile.gif).

Is the answer to your latest riddle a toy tank? (At least if my four-year-old brother is anything to go by, any toy that leaves that tank is in for a rough time).

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 10:52 PM
Aragorn - the thrush knocking on the door on Durin's Day? smilies/smile.gif (since the sun and moon were in the sky together then...)

Samwise
04-06-2002, 10:59 PM
Nope, not a toy tank. (though I'm not sure if you mean one thing or another, it's still neither).
"What about the elves?" said Sam, too excited. "Can't we go and see them? "

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 11:01 PM
Maybe one of those gumball machines, then? smilies/smile.gif.

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 11:08 PM
Congrats, Samwise - you're certainly on a roll right now. Hope you're feeling a little better from that smilies/smile.gif.

Aragorn, random question; would you happen to be a fan of B5?

Samwise
04-06-2002, 11:08 PM
Thank you, Aragorn. smilies/biggrin.gif
Uh, Kalimac, a tad more specific.
"Elves! " exclaimed Sam. "Elves, sir!" He would have burst out of the trees and dashed off, if they had not pulled him back.

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 11:11 PM
Sorry...I'm kind of slow this evening...do you mean just a gumball then? Or am I off-track?

Samwise
04-06-2002, 11:15 PM
Yep, that was it. Just the gumball.
Well, my brain is near wore out, an' I'm havin' trouble keepin' my eyes open. Miss Kalimac and Mister Aragorn, sir, I hope to see you next time I come wanderin' through here. smilies/redface.gif
~Samwise
"Yes, sir!" said Sam. "Begging your pardon, sir! But I meant no wrong to you, Mr. Frodo, nor to Mr. Gandalf. He has some sense, and when you said go alone, he said no! take someone as you can trust. "

Kalimac
04-06-2002, 11:19 PM
Cool! (Oh lord, now I have to think of another one...well, I'll think about it for a bit). Have a good night, m'lady Samwise smilies/smile.gif.

Meanwhile, in lieu of the new riddle I haven't thought of yet, I'll refer people back to the "two brothers" one I posted on the first page.

Hi, sorry not been on for a couple of days - wow we've moved.

Yes, Nuranar it was life!

Boy, Kalimac, this is hard! Question: Is the second actually twice as large, or is it just larger in a metaphorical sense, and not necessarily twice as large?

Hmm...Guess I'll keep working on it!

Kalimac, yes I would be. smilies/smile.gif

Kalimac
04-07-2002, 10:00 PM
No, it's not birth and death. Good guess, though!

Nuranar - it's literally twice as large, but just remember that that statement can apply to a couple of different angles of the answer smilies/smile.gif.

Aragorn - The Z'ha'dum kind of tipped me off - actually I've seen very little B5 but have friends who were devoted to it and have taped every episode. And hearing them talk about it I was rather struck by the similarity to Khazad-Dum...total coincidence, I'm sure smilies/smile.gif.

Still trying to think of my new riddle - I'll be back smilies/evil.gif .

Sorry to go off track - but stuck on Kalimac's riddle (good one!)

There are a numebr of links between B5 and LOTR - I read an article about it. Another link is the us of Rangers - they even dress the same. (Just though you may be interested!!)

Kalimac
04-08-2002, 09:06 PM
Oof...now I'm hoping the riddle wasn't *too* vague. All of the guesses are really ingenious (I mean, they're not answers I'd ever have thought of, if presented with this riddle) but I really didn't intend to stymie the thread to this point. Here are some hints:

(1) Both answers begin with the same letter (I've given this one before)

(2) The second "brother" is literally twice as large as the first, but not in a way that can be physically measured (what I mean is, don't try to use a ruler, tape measure, scale or anything like that, it won't work)

(3) Both of them physically stimulate the nerves. And no, they're not off-color, so don't bother smilies/smile.gif.

Hope that helps. If this goes on much longer, would you mind if I just told the answer? Then you'll all know and can say in chorus "WHAT? How do get that answer from those clues?" smilies/smile.gif.

No, it's not love and friendship (do you like Jane Austen, Samwise? smilies/smile.gif). Would you like to know the answer? Please, Kalimac, post the answer! I'm sure I'll smack my head and dance around the room, calling myself a triple imbecile, but all the same I don't have the energy to try to guess it.

Samwise, I like your riddle - although I'm not a man, it's unfortunately all too true for me...and sometimes the "something quite small" doesn't end its reign... smilies/frown.gif

OK everyone, here it is, and I'll admit right here that some of the clues were a little...off-kilter...so please don't banish me ... please? smilies/frown.gif

The riddle is:

There are two of them, they are brothers
The second twice as large as the first
To know the second, you must meet the first
Although only the second is ever sought.
Every man meets them.
Who/what are they?

The answer is.......PAIN and PLEASURE. They're a natural pair (brothers), and you have to experience pain before you can appreciate pleasure (if you want to be very literal, everyone experiences the pain of birth before they can experience the pleasure of, well, anything else). And nobody deliberately seeks out pain - well, there are a few exceptions but we're talking about the normal 99% of the world here - while everyone seeks pleasant experiences. Every man meets them - that probably doesn't need too much explanation.

And as for "the second twice as large as the first" - well, count the number of letters in each word.

There it is. All questions and scoldings are welcome smilies/smile.gif. And while I have a couple more riddles which I'm due to come up with, I can promise wholeheartedly that I will not use the number of letters as a clue ever again.

Nuranar - Thank you [Kalimac blushes]. Shadow sounds good as an answer to Stephanos' riddle as anything - in fact I can't even THINK of anything else.

Samwise - Umm, was that a good AIIII or a bad AIIII? smilies/smile.gif

And in case anyone is still willing to guess at a riddle that I wrote, here's one of the backed-up ones I should have done a while ago.

Millions of lives will end to create me
In every house it happens, every day.
I am not alive, and yet I grow.
And when my growth is ended, I will shrink
Until there is nothing left.

Samwise
04-09-2002, 08:44 PM
"Shadow" sounds good to me, too.

Kalimac, that was a combination of things 1) at how good that riddle was, 2)at the headache I got trying to figure it out smilies/wink.gif 3)relief that my widdle brain no longer has to try to figure it out! smilies/biggrin.gif

As to your newest riddle, Kalimac--dust?
When thirteen had fallen and the rest fled shrieking, leaving the defenders unharmed, except for Sam, who had a scratch along the scalp. A quick duck had saved him; and he had felled his Orc; a sturdy thrust with his Barrow-blade. A fire was smouldering in his brown eyes that would have made Ted Sandyman step backwards, if he had seen it.

Kalimac
04-09-2002, 08:48 PM
Samwise - no, not dust. But it is something you see around the house a lot (wait, I think I just said more about the condition of my apartment than I meant to... smilies/smile.gif)

Stephanos are you out there? Is it a shadow or do we have to start over? smilies/frown.gif

Samwise
04-09-2002, 08:58 PM

Hmmm...how do you do gardening if you're renting a room? Is there a backyard that you can use? Lucky smilies/smile.gif. I have two rooms but no yard except for the front lawns, which I cannot plant stuff on. Now if I switched to an apartment on the first floor...ahh, I'm moving soon enough anyway.

Hint for the riddle: you're most likely only to see it in one or two particular rooms of the house.

Kalimac
04-09-2002, 09:06 PM
Hello, Rae! If you want, you can post one of your own and let us agonize for a change smilies/smile.gif.

Samwise
04-09-2002, 09:11 PM
Don't you remember my describing my garden to you in that PM, Kalimac? The room I rent is actually my own, in my parent's house. A couple of years ago, as I think I explained,
I "claimed" the front yard.
(If you don't, it's okay, 'cause half the time I think I've said things, and then I find out I haven't... smilies/rolleyes.gif )
For some time Frodo and Sam managed to keep up with the others, but after a while they lagged behind. Sam's cut was burning like fire, and his head felt light. In spite of the shining sun the wind felt chill. He shivered.

Samwise
04-09-2002, 09:14 PM
....and what do you mean, you can't plant things in your lawn? I have two freesias and a jonny-jump up growing in ours! (of course, they planted themselves.... smilies/wink.gif
Aragorn tended to Sam and Frodo. Sam's wound was not deep, but it looked ugly, and Aragorn's face was grave as he examined it. After a moment he looked up with relief. "Good luck, Sam!" he said, "Many have recieved worse than this in payment for the slaying of their first Orc. "

Kalimac
04-09-2002, 09:15 PM
Actually, Samwise, I don't think you ever did (just took a moment to glance over my PMs). If you want to do so, though, I'd be more than happy to read it smilies/smile.gif. Still lucky, though - I can't see my dad ever relinquishing his garden even if I still lived at home (though honestly he's much better at it than I'll ever be ...)

Kalimac
04-09-2002, 09:18 PM
I mean that they're not my lawns, they're the apt. complex's lawns which they hire gardeners to take care of, and they'll thank you not to plant anything there, since it might interfere with the landscaping. So yes, they're perfectly capable of growing stuff, but I can't plant it there. Sigh. Ah, Suburbia.

Do you want any more hints for the riddle? (Just bowing in the direction of the topic for the moment smilies/smile.gif).

Samwise
04-09-2002, 09:23 PM
I didn't mean recently, you asked me about my garden, and.....
What? Oh, yeah, the topic. Not dust...uh...something spilled?
"They're Elves," said Sam. "Can't you hear their voices? "
"Yes, they are Elves," said Legolas, "and they say that you breathe so loudly that they could shoot you in the dark."
Sam hastily put his hand over his mouth.

Kalimac
04-09-2002, 09:33 PM
Nope, not something spilled. Think about the "millions must die" bit.

The garden thing is confusing me now! But I think we have each other's respective gardening situations pretty well mapped out at least smilies/smile.gif. I do remember you mentioning that you're a flower person, though, and the fact that the snails are pretty bad for them. (You could have fooled this northerner smilies/smile.gif).

Samwise
04-09-2002, 09:42 PM
Mm. Okay, must have dreamed it. (I can't have dreams that are actually INTERESTING, like some folks on this board....)
And as per your riddle, this just popped into my head, though it's probably not right.: Hair?
Out of the shadows a ladder was let down. Legolas ran lightly up, and Frodo followed slowly; behind came Sam, trying not to breathe loudly.

Kalimac
04-09-2002, 09:46 PM
Hair - no it's not the answer, but I like it. It really could fit, especially since hair consists of millions of dead cells (fun thought as I try to untangle it every morning). I think you have to get style points for that one smilies/smile.gif. But no, it's something else. And like I said, it mostly shows up in one or two rooms.

Amanruthiel, here's another off the wall guess if Stephanos is incorrect--your riddle reminds me of an old children's story--is it
"Nobody"?
It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "

I don't have a clue!

While i'm thinking, get your teeth into these.

I cast my net, but not for fish,
A tasty morsel is all I wish,
Some fear, some hate and some love me,
But I care not, for I am free,

I stalk the land,
or as small as a flea,
No-one sees me.

What am I?

And if that was not enough.

Here I stand, still, proud and strong,
But in this time I don't belong,
I would point, and men would cower before me,
I could enslave or I could set free,
Born in red, raised in silver, fought in red,
In the heat of battle, I have led.

What am I?

Susan Delgado

My understanding of protozoa is that it's simply a generic term for single celled organisms. I'd have said "amoebas", but protozoa is more fun to say. smilies/smile.gif
I guessed this because they reproduce by fission (is it painless? well, I don't rightly know) and they have no emotions to mourn those who die.

Kalimac
04-13-2002, 02:00 PM
Nuranar and Lady_Bain, thank you very much. I think I'm just going to answer it now (also because, to be honest, the only definition I could give of "alive" in this case is "it reproduces" which wouldn't help much). Here's the riddle:

Millions of lives will end to create me
In every house it happens, every day.
I am not alive, and yet I grow.
And when my growth is ended, I will shrink
Until there is nothing left.

The answer is....BREAD. The millions of lives are, of course, the yeast.

Samwise - Thank you! smilies/smile.gif. I am complimented. Yes, I remember the frog...also the little squid, the fish, the worm, the cow's eye, the whole panoply. And actually I usually was the one that did the dissecting; I was good at using the scalpel (I remember my biology teacher standing up front and saying "OK, class, now's the time to separate the butchers from the brain surgeons.") My problem was that I was never what it was I was *seeing*. So usually I'd cut the thing up and my lab partner would figure out what was what. I was pretty helpless when it came to individual dissections, though. Ugh. Glad that's over.

Here's one of my backed-up riddles:

I cannot see, I cannot hear, I cannot taste or touch.
But without me, neither can you.

Samwise
04-13-2002, 02:51 PM
Ah, thank YOU, Kalimac.
Is your latest riddle's answer the brain?
LOL on your science stories....you had to dissect ALL those different things?? EYECCH.
I remember later, in High school, we had, after the initial "Frog", the choice of doing other animals if we wished...one of which included a PREGNANT CAT!
smilies/eek.gif
Ugh...Okay, back to the topic....
Now that I think about it, "Rat" sounds good for that other riddle; being "tar" spelled backwards and "tar and feather" being public ridicule...and all. How in the WORLD did you figure that out???

Kalimac
04-13-2002, 02:55 PM
Samwise, it is indeed the brain smilies/smile.gif. (Wonder what made me think of that?)

Pregnant cat? Urgh. Glad I missed that one! Did you ever have to do the fetal pig? I don't know how I forgot that when I was making that last list - it was undoubtedly the worst of all (blocked the memory or something, I guess). The thing that really got me was that the school had hundreds of tubs of fetal pigs all of which had been *donated by an alumnus*. I've wondered for a long time exactly what the alumnus was trying to say by doing that....

Samwise
04-13-2002, 03:00 PM
Eew...you didn't have to dissect...ugh.
Anyway, YAY! Got it right! (Stick to that topic...)
Got to think up another riddle myself. They seem to only come when I'm not thinking about it.
"That's about it," said Sam. "I'll keep watch. I can sleep tomorrow, being no more than luggage in a boat, as you might say. "

You lot are great at these, I can but watch in awe.

So, here is another for you.

Hmmm...broom sounds good to me, Raefindel, in fact nothing else sounds like a reasonable answer now...

Susan - Oops, sorry about the "every day, every house" thing. I can only say that if you grew up with four siblings and a mother who did all her own bread baking you do tend to take that line for granted...

Lady_Báin and Samwise, thank you so much! I don't know how I guessed it; I just started with "the supreme tickler"--of course, a feather! and then the jump to tar and feathers, etc., etc. I'd love to post one in reply, but making up riddles doesn't just happen to me; I need to work on it. I'll be back!

Hello Maril! I have no idea what yours is. The only thing that came to mind was an atom bomb, I don't know why, but that obviously isn't the answer...

"I had a funny dream an hour or two before we stopped, Mr. Frodo. Or maybe it wasn't a dream. Funny it was, anyway. "
"Well, what was it?" said Frodo, knowing that sam would not settle down until he had told his tale, whatever it was.

Samwise
04-14-2002, 09:20 PM
Susan, I'm sure this isn't it, but it's all I can think of at the moment: an itch?
When thirteen had fallen and the rest fled shrieking, leaving the defenders unharmed, except for Sam, who had a scratch along the scalp. A quick duck had saved him; and he had felled his Orc; a sturdy thrust with his Barrow-blade. A fire was smouldering in his brown eyes that would have made Ted Sandyman step backwards, if he had seen it.

Kalimac
04-14-2002, 09:22 PM
I liked it too, mostly I was guessing on probabilities. What does the "home of a king" clue mean, BTW? I was thinking of something vaguely Pharaoh-related - pyramids, lots of sand surrounding them and all that - but not sure. And Samwise, if it helps, I tried the #13 riddle (with credit) on a couple of other people and neither of them came close smilies/wink.gif.

Now if only I had even the vaguest idea on some of these other ones...my brain is starting to feel a little squeezed.

Well, I came across this when I was reading tonight. This is NOT mine, and strictly speaking it's not a riddle, but some of you might be able to guess what the answer is...

"They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but they cannot see;
they have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but they cannot smell;
they have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but they cannot walk;
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them."

I will post the answer soon if no one guesses it, because it's really not mine and may be considered a trick because some of you might think it's similar to my "Shoes" riddle earlier...

Samwise
04-15-2002, 07:21 PM
Susan, is it a tea kettle?
He turned and saw that Sam was now standing beside him, looking round with a puzzled expresson, and rubbing his eyes as if he was not sure that he ws awake.
"It's sunlight and bright day, right enough." he said, I thought that Elves were all for moon and stars: but this is more elvish than I ever heard tell of. I feel as if I was inside a song, if you take my meaning. "

Samwise
04-15-2002, 07:38 PM
Another simple one from Samwise:

I have a head, but no brain
generally, I have a smile on my face, but it dosen't necesarily mean that I'm happy.
I can have arms, but they are useless
With the rising of the sun, my life can end.
"You don't need to tell me that!" said Sam. "I came without any, and I've been worried ever since. But I was wondering what these were made of, knowing a bit about rope-making: it's in the family as you might say. "

Kalimac
04-15-2002, 08:36 PM
Nuranar, I was going to guess an idol but Susan beat me to it. How about a mummy?

Samwise, is yours a snowman?

How about this one? It's pretty basic.

Too much of me will kill
As will too little of me
In summer I am prayed for
But cursed if too oft I come.
What am I?

Samwise
04-15-2002, 08:43 PM
Yes, Kalimac, it is. smilies/wink.gif
"I have indeed!" said Sam. "And I reckon there's Elves and there's Elves. They're all Elvish enough, but they're not all the same. Now these folk aren't wanderers or homeless, and seem a bit nearer to the likes of us: they seem to belong here, more even than Hobbits do in the Shire. Whether they've made the land, or the land's made them, it's hard to say, if you take my meaning."

Nuranar
04-15-2002, 09:37 PM
Susan and Kalimac, you are both correct: It is an idol. Here is the quote in its entirety:

Why do the nations say,
"Where is their God?"
Our God is in heaven;
he does whatever pleases him.
But their idols are silver and gold,
made by the hands of men.
They have mouths, but cannot speak,
eyes, but they cannot see;
they have ears, but cannot hear,
noses, but they cannot smell;
they have hands, but cannot feel,
feet, but they cannot walk;
nor can they utter a sound with their throats.
Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.
--Psalm 115:2-8 NIV

The "Goldfish" one? No, that's Mr. Greenbow's.

---------------------------------------------
Mm...the sky?
Sam eased the pack on his shoulders, and went over anxiously in his mind all the things which were stowed in it: his chief treasure, his cooking gear; and the little box of salt that he always carried and refilled when he could; woolen hose; linen; various small belongings of his master's that Frodo had forgotten and Sam had stowed to bring them all out in triumph when they were called for. He went through them all.

Susan Delgado

Surely
At night, one builds up sticks and other pieces of wood to build the fire. In the morning, the wood is all burned away, leaving nothing in its place but ash. It's simply a different use of the word "dressed" Substitute "built" and it'll work too.

I also would have accepted "a rose"(or other flower) because at night it closes over its delicate inner parts and in the morning opens again, exposing itself to the sunlight.

No, Susan, not love--
As for: "I pass before the sun..."
is it a cloud?
"So my plan is all spoilt!" said Frodo. "It is no good trying to escape you. But I'm glad, Sam. It is plain that we were meant to go together. "

Hello, everyone! This thread has certainly grown since last time I was here...

Susan - this is probably out of left field but is the answer a witch? (If I remember correctly witches weren't supposed to be able to cast shadows. Or be photographed, for that matter).

Samwise - Is yours illness? It certainly grabs you quickly, anyway...

Hi, Kalimac! good to see you.

Susan, I'm stumped. That's a good riddle.

I have nothing pertinent to add, neither guesses nor further riddles. I think I'm riddles out.

No, it is neither a witch nor a cloud (clouds leave shadows...)

Was I on the right track by naming an emotion?

No--it's an actual thing.
Sam had a natural mistrust of the inhabitants of other parts of the Shire; and also he was not disposed to be quick friends with anyone who had beaten his master, however long ago.

Blecch...they certainly do--though I've said "take that" to mine with some cold medicine....
Sorry, nope, not an illness.

As no-one answered, I thought I'd put in to you again.

With no wings, I fly.
With no eyes, I see.
With no arms, I climb.
More frightening than any beast, stronger than any foe.
I am cunning, ruthless, and tall; in the end, I rule all.

What am I?

Actually, that same riddle and answer is posted under "Starbreeze's Challenge". We weren't neglecting you smilies/frown.gif

Hm. That may be so, but I still don't know the answer.
"I can take you to them, sir," said Sam. "It's a big house, this, and very peculiar. Always a bit more to discover, and no knowing what you'll find round a courner. And Elves, sir! Elves here and Elves there! "

According to the other thread... the answer is imagination.

The answer to THIS!?!? Eh--I didn't think that was it. smilies/frown.gif
Movie Moment
*Frodo and Sam walking across a feild*
*Sam stops*
*Frodo turns* "Sam, what's the matter? "
*Sam* "If I take another step, I'll be farther from home than I've ever been."
