Hi. I'm Emerwyn. I'm new here and thought I'd take the time to say "Hello" to everyone. I've visited the Barrow-Downs before to find info and decided to join. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about Tolkien yet, but I'd love to talk about it.

Welcome to the Downs, Emerwyn! smilies/biggrin.gif I like your name. smilies/smile.gif What does it mean?

Mae Govannen, ring_bearer000! smilies/biggrin.gif (I don't like rap either. lol.) Although I can't guarantee that you won't get some argument here, depending of course upon how forcefully you choose to portray your opinion, you can't go wrong with reading the FAQ's that are linked above.
In any case, I hope you both enjoy a nice long stay. smilies/biggrin.gif

I'm not extremely knowledgeable about Tolkien yet, but I'd love to talk about it Don't worry, most of us don't know as much the real Tolkienists of the forum. I can guarantee you'll learn lots though, and that you'll have a great time! smilies/biggrin.gif Oh and to be afraid to leave "Newbies". I was, but it turned out the rest of the forum wasn't all that terrifying (trying to work up the nerve to try and answer a quiz question with people like Beren around is a bit difficult, but anyway...)

Hello I did not realize my question would raise such an uproar. I just wanted to know if Middle Earth was its own entity or part of another place!
We all love TLOR in my house and we have discussions about it. Some one raise the question so I thought I would find out what I could.
I did not want to insult any one. This is for the novices and newcomers right??? smilies/eek.gif

Tinuviel of Denton didn't mean to sound derogitory I am sure. But it is kind of funny when people do do that. I think that she was just being silly. Anyway Sabina welcome. You should read the rest of this thread, there is some good advise here.

Same! I am sorry if you thought i was being a biatch! I was only joking with the heart failure thing! Seriously dont take anything i say to heart, because this is typed, it is easy to take it out of context eh?

Anyway, its a perfectly good question, i suppose we have all needed to know what Middle Earth is, up till four years ago i had no idea! So yeah, anyway "enjoy being dead" that seems to be the token phrase here. smilies/biggrin.gif

Here is a little explanation of what Middle-earth is:

The lands of Arda (the Earth as named by Tolkien for his stories) that lie east of Belegaer (the great sea on the west coast of Middle-earth) and extend as far south as Harad and east as Rhun. It is the area in which the stories of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings take place, and also a great deal of the Silmarillion.

Click on the gold link to read more about it:

And I shall reiterate Tinuviel of Denton:
[b]To all of you: [/i]
Don't be afraid of those of us who are not entirely of one world. smilies/rolleyes.gif Some of us have been here quite a long time, and have consequently become quite a bit more -erm.. 'die hard' -if you will- in our mutual obsessions. smilies/biggrin.gif *smiles warmly*

The lands of Flugflug that lie east of Sajhbooga and extend to Fiddledeedee? Okay, sorry... that just sounded like gibberish to me. smilies/smile.gif

So, Middle-Earth is supposed to be this planet, only thousands of years ago? Any particular place on this earth? I keep trying to make the maps fit with England.

Anyway, hello all. I know Pookabunny from another message board, but that's it. ::waves::

Oh-- are there any pet peeves on this board? It seems every board has one. smilies/smile.gif

Tinuviel of Denton
09-19-2003, 10:17 PM
Pet peeves? Maybe chatspeak. (which you don't seem to have a problem with.)

And I think I already apologized for sounding mean. But anyway...

Welcome to the Downs all of you! Just let me reiterate that you can PM me or any of the other not-newbies if you have any questions.

(And, not that I think you're dumb but some people don't know how to PM or to access their PMs, so I'll tell you how.

To PM someone: Above each post, there are three or four links. One of them is a picture of two people with a dotted line connecting them. Click on that and then treat it like a post.

To check your PMs: Up in the top there is a line of six links; my profile, register, search, faq, donate, and forum home. "My profile" takes you to a page that shows your PMs.)

I hope I didn't insult anyone's intelligence there. Just some newbies have difficulty with the PM system, and I thought it might be better to clarify.

And Welcome once again to the wonderful realm of the Downs! Enjoy!

Just one question, perhaps I didn't read well enough, but how do you join the RPs? Just curious, as I love RPing. And am very, VERY good at it.

(Originally posted by Sulwen) 1. do all the lil icon at the top (i.e. the sword, pipe, sheild, etc.) have a meaning or do you just pick your favorite???
2. how did ya'll get your aviater pics up next to your names??
3. how do get become (for lack of a better word) un-dead..lol..and how can i give people ratings???

Before we start, I'd like to suggest that you read the Forum FAQ: just go back to the Novice and Newcomers screen. It will explain a lot.

1. Just pick whatever you'd like, some people always pick the same one, others pick one that is most relevant to their topic, or you can choose at random for each post.

2. Click the "My Profile" link at the top of the screen, click "View/Update Profile" and go down to the text box with a big 'OR' directly above it. Find yourself an avatar and enter the URL in that box. Also, if you explore the other text fields, you can provide others with information such as your occupation, location, AIM ID, and a three line (or less) quote of your choice to be displayed after every post (at your discression).

3A. One never becomes undead unless their membership is revoked (which is not a good thing). As you progress as a member of the Downs, you will sink to greater levels of death: Animated Skeleton, Wight, Shade of Carn Dum, and Ghost Prince of Cardolan. You can get your own personal title after five hundred posts, but more is said about that in the FAQ.

3B. To rate another member, click on the "rate member" link below their avatar. Then their profile will come up, and in the top right will be the rating scale from which you choose.

Note: I hope you enjoy the downs despite my dry post, and don't worry: there are much more interesting people here than I. smilies/biggrin.gif However, most members (and all moderators) would ask that you refrain from using chat style language in your posts.

Welcome again,
Iarwain

P.S. Before you do anything, read the FAQ!!! smilies/smile.gif

P.P.S. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to private message me.

When she says, 'you soon will be' no kidding. It's not an option...

Sulwen, of course it isn't bad to post before you introduce yourself - as the Barrow-Wight said on the first page, the Barrowdowns doesn't require you to introduce yourself. I never had an oficial newbie post on this sitee. Still, as you're here...welcome to the Downs! Gracious, how many elvish names do you have, you make it sound like you have reams! Sulwen - short, sensible, sweet. smilies/smile.gif

Becky - welcome, both to the Downs and to Lord of the Rings! As Ainaserkwen said, no doubt soon you'll be an expert. From being around lots of these people, you sort of...absorb it... smilies/wink.gif Glad you like the site...theres something about the black, green and gold in this combination that is strangely addictive...surrender to the green-black goodness...

Vladivos - well, talk about a preliminary test period! Well, now you've stopped lurking smilies/wink.gif, welcome to the Downs as a member this time!

She Nazgul - ah, a short and sweet post, I can see you and Burrahobbit getting along well...welcome, sweetie.

Jack...well, yes, the phrase 'just Jack', accompanied by suitable hand movements (come on, someone else has to watch Will And Grace!) is coming to mind smilies/wink.gif. Welcome, and its good to see you in the Green Dragon as well of late.

...and that brings me neatly to Elmirwen, to say, damn right it is! Look forward to seeing you around the RP forums!

Ah, Golden, modesty itself smilies/wink.gif By the sounds of it, I'll be seeing plenty of you around the RPs as well, and twill be all the better for you, I have no doubt!

Yours,
Aman

I am Elentari I, Elf-Witch. I am a Spyder Slayer of Mirkwood, but before that I was a dragon hunter. <-- Elentari's my main RPG character for all those who don't know me... I tend to post in character most of the time. ^_^' I'm insane like that.

Elentari I, the insane and otherwise indigestable.

[EDIT]P.S. Please accept my appologies in advance for any spelling errors you see me write. The 'd' key doesn't work properly.

Oops, I guess I should have stopped by here awhile ago!! I came over to this site via a link from the Lord of the Rings Fanatics site --which kept shutting down my computer!! Don't tell them I said this, but this site is more fun. Or I could be paraphrasing (FOP). Longtime Tolkien reader, but only recently got at-home access to the internet.

Sorry, I've been spouting off for the last few weeks without introducing myself.

I'm an avid LOTR reader (like us all no doubt). first read the hobbit at school and then moved onto lotr. had to restart a number of times before I got into it. Not sure how many times I've read it now. It always makes me cry.

I love the way that you find different things every time you read it. My favourite part after my last reading is now book II of the Two Towers.

My pet hate is people dissing lotr when they haven't even read it.

I love the movies, but at times people may not think this. (see some of my posts....) Honestly, I cannot think of anything that I have looked forward to as much as dec 17th this year......

Since fotr came out I've been working on a doc that compares all of the scenes and dialouge from fotr movie with the book, including all the references to passages in the book. I like the obscure ones (ie Sauron the deceiver) taken from the Silmarillion etc. I've pretty much finished the fotr one but I haven't published it on the net yet. Is there anywhere on this site that would include things like this?

Anyway, my other interests are football (that's the proper english one). I'm a season ticket holder at a premiership team, but I won't say which one as that would set people against me!

I'm from Essex in England (thus my barrow downs name) and I've been to LOTR forums before (fanspot.net and halls of mandos) but broke off as it was taking too much of my time.

as we're nearing the ending of the movies now, I've decided to have another spate of visits. Great site, and a broad spectrum of fans from filmites to bookites. (I'm pretty much near the top of the bookites side, but still love the movies)

Cheers.

Hello all,
I am Vardalithiel. I may also sign things as Confused Elven Maiden, just so you know. I love The Lord of the Rings more than almost anything, but believe it or not, I had not even heard of The Lord of the Rings until the movie FotR came out. As soon as I saw it, I had to have more. I read all three books within a month. They were so spectacular I could not believe it. Now that I have read The Lord of the Rings, I love having conversations about LotR with people who have read these books. Don't get me wrong, I love the movies (December 17 will be the happiest/most heart-wrenching day of my life), but the books give so much more insight and perspective that it is frustrating for me to have a conversation about LotR with someone who hasn't read them.
I have been coming to this website for some time now (OK, I spend all of my online time here), and I finally decided to register!
I just want to say thank you to The Barrow-Downs for giving all of us The Lord of the Rings fans a place to ponder Tolkien's works!

P.S. I know I already messed up and put this in the wrong place, so if I do that again, I'm sorry!

Positive thoughts on being dead in Middle-earth:
You get to haunt Middle-earth for a much longer time than the average lifespan...which I am sure we would all relish
(excepting elves, maiar, and the event of any such magic as would expell you from the Middle-earth spirit world)
Enter and exit barrows without using the door
Creep out the unsuspecting
Watch battles without fear of death
More time to learn the lore of the hobbits, elves, and the other free peoples of ME

So for any who are oddly bemused at being dead here in the barrows, which at first reading I was, there are positives to being dead in ME. I won't dwell on the negative aspects, that's not the sort of dead thing I am (currently).

Suilad! I've just registered 2 days ago, so I'm quite a newbie. I'm Galenondowen, or you may call me Galen. smilies/wink.gif Er... The rest of my profile can be fictional, right? Let's say, I'm a living dead. Usually known among orcs as Hunter, as I love hunting them at night. And I usually wander around Rivendell, sometimes travel to Lothlorien. By the way, I usually stay in shadow, for I'm sorta anti-sunlight (this is true), and I love high snowy mountains under star-lit sky. smilies/wink.gif

Hi, Ainaserkewen. ^_^ Thanks for the compliment! And hello, Whyneth. =)
Er... I've checked the rpg page... I've read the must read post... And I still don't know how to start in it... (*sob* Stupid me.) It says I should post in The Green Dragon Inn first, but it is itself an rpg, and every one seems interacting with others... (Or have several characters?) I can't find anywhere to post my character's profile and my first post... So I think I need some help here.
And the avatars are taken off from the site you game me, Ainaserkewen... -_-;;

Ainaserkewen
10-31-2003, 12:23 PM
Glad you looked into the RPGs. Basically, you have to come up with a character and enter him into the Green Dragon. Like walk in at some point. Question people and interact with each other. At some point, new RPGs will open up that you can play in, just watch the posts by Pio(Shire Moderator) Ask the shire mods if you have more specific questions. I tried the RPGs earlier in the year, but they really need constant attention...I couldn't keep up.

Galenondowen
11-01-2003, 05:13 AM
Thank you! ^_^ I'll contact the mods then.
Oh I made a typing mistake in my last post! I meant 'The avatars are taken off from the site you GAVE me', but I typed 'you GAME me' instead... Lol. Sorry...-_-;;
Er... Do you have any other avatar site, Ainaserkewen?

Tinuviel of Denton
11-01-2003, 11:39 AM
Hey Galen. Here's (http://slumber.fc2web.com/frame.html) a wonderful site for avatars; it's where I got mine smilies/biggrin.gif .

As to the Green Dragon, you don't have to put a profile or first post there, only in the actual RPGs. Basically, it's a place to practice interacting with other characters. A good first post would describe your character, give a hint of his/her past, and approach someone in the common room. Actually, at the moment, one of my characters in the Inn isn't doing anything. She's a dark-haired g.irl seated by the bar alone, and if you like, your char can approach her. But do come in, we don't bite. Hard. smilies/wink.gif

Oh, and as regards to typos: Look at the top of your post. There's a little icon at the far right that looks like a rectangle and a hammer. Click on that, and you can go back and edit your post and get rid of any grammatical or spelling errors. Or delete the whole thing, if you need to.

Hello all you wights, dwarves, elves, dragons, fairies, Hornblowers, Baggins, Tooks, humans, and other sundry Downers. My name is Tom and I just discovered this site yesterday. I started reading Tolkien in grade school and have loved Middle Earth ever since (I remember stocking up on sandwiches and burrowing into my room the first time I read "The Council of Elrond", because I didn't want to miss a word or be interrupted.) It's great to finally find a place were I can discuss one of my favorite topic with others who feel the same way about Tolkien, Middle Earth, and the fantasy genre as a whole. I can't wait to jump in.

I did have a few questions. Is there any meaning to the message icons on the posts? I chose Tolkien's initials for this post because I always thought it looked cool. I would also like to know what avatars are, as they pertain to this site. Is it some official designation, or just a polite term or endearment? That's all for now; I look forward to discussing Tolkien with as many of you as possible.

TTFN,

Tom, The Cool Took

Hello! avatars are the pics you see posted under peoples user names. You should see a picture of Arwen under my name. It's just a picture you pick. If you need help understanding how to get one, let me know, and I'll help you out. The little message icons can either go along with the topic of your post, or you could pick one and use it on all your posts, or whatever you feel like doing. I usually use the Silmaril, or whatever it is. But sometimes I pick a different one to go along with the topic of m post. Hope this helps a bit! I'd be glad to help with anything else! Welcome to the

Hola! I am new to this little haven, and am relatively new to Tolkien. I read The Hobbit and FotR just before the first movie came out after trying two years prior to read FotR and failing. ("So boring!" I lamented.) I read TTT and RotK before TTT came into theatres and topped it off with Silmarillion this past January and Unfinished Tales over the summer. I've got Letters of JRRT and the HoM-E waiting for me, so I think it safe to say I've come to enjoy the world Tolkien created.

I hope to be as positive a contributor here as I have been at the last few message boards I frequented (most prominent being a 14 month stint as a manager at the TFN's JediCouncil).

The Ninth Valar
11-08-2003, 02:35 AM
Here's how I figured it.

There are 15 Valar, but really, sixof them are lesser, so I only counted the Aratar among them. And the ninth of the Aratar was Melkor (there are eight on the side of the Eru...but there is one more, a ninth and he has fallen).

Or, it could be Manwe, if you are counting them in terms of power, from least to greatest among the Aratar, Melkor being counted as second most powerful (in my opinion, the true Valar; I consider the others great maiar, but I know this is technically false).

Or...I forgot about the other six, saw a list of eight (Manwe, Ulmo, Aule, Orome, Mandos, Yavana, Varda, and Nienna) and said to myself, "The Ninth Valar...that's Melkor, and a nifty name!" smilies/wink.gif Hah! So you could say I messed up a bit, but I like it, and that's enough for me. smilies/biggrin.gif

And welcome to you too, Eowyn, aka Erin! I believe I've been posting on a thread you've posted on about Samwise and the Ring lately! I always enjoy new perspectives!

Also, I love your explanation of your name almost as well as the name, Ninth Valar! Welcome and happy despoiling! (Oh, I used to hang out on the TFN Jedi Council message board a long time ago... it was the first message board I posted regularly on, as a matter of fact!) I hope you'll enjoy it here! smilies/biggrin.gif

I don't know what kind of useful advice I might give to those newly come to this vast, forbidding landscape (or friendly, green pasture!) of a forum, but I'll do my best to answer any questions in true airheaded Pippin style, and may I add a codicil that my views do not necessarily reflect the views of the sane members of this respectable and friendly site! smilies/wink.gif Enjoy!

Enjoy being dead! smilies/biggrin.gif Where do I find the forum that I saw yesterday (my first day on forum), it was about the differences between the books and the movies? Are you referring to this thread (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=003402)? It is entitled "Book vs. Movie Characters" and I found it by searching in the Books forum using the terms book vs movie . The search function can be very helpful and can be found near the top of the page just under the two rings that say "New Topic" and "Add Reply." If this isn't the thread you're looking for, try the Search function in each of the forums and you'll probably find lots of interesting stuff you were or weren't looking for that will take you in wonderful new directions!

Cheers!

Okay, that is a dumb, stereo-typical comment.
Geez, I like Elves(I don't love them, but i like some of them) and I LOVEfantasy, and i used to play the flute but it wasn't for me.
The drums are what I play now.

Hi, Danni, and welcome to the Barrow-Downs forum. A forum is different than a chat room - this is a virtual bulletin board, where you can leave messages for others to read and answer, but not talk directly to them. That's why you don't get immediate reactions. It can take a few minutes or hours, even longer, before someone replies.

If you'd like to chat, go to the Downs' main page (http://www.barrowdowns.com/themes_Bombadil.asp), scroll down to "discussions" and click on chat. Click on "Java chat" to enter the room. Hope you find whatever way of communication you're looking for and enjoy it!

And yes sometimes we peve each other off, but ,most of us understand that we are not all the same. I have seen a few people chastised for insulting others, (either that or bad spelling);those insults were degrading. One that I saw was saying how stupid a particular thread was, and was not to kind to the poster..... that was not cool.

The best advise I can give is to look at an argument from all sides, and not flame people. And whaterver you do do not change yourself(just because you hate Harry Potter) or you veiws just because you think someone got hurt over it.

Some of the Mods are great, others I don't agree with, but I like to treat them with the same way as my instructors. I give them what they want. So if you stay on topic, don't insult people and say intelagent things you will do fine.

Oh yes and if you can't spell, like me, start to use word, word perfect, or any other program with a spell checker. This works for most of the time , but not always.

About the scary Mods....

Just treat them like your instructors at school, and give em what they want.... Have I posted this before? Welcome, and enjoy being dead. And when in the green dragon, poi and the rest of the mods are not trying to peve you off, so just accept it. As a matter of fact, poi and the other mods in the shire are the best that I know..... They do a good job. But back to the subject, welcome one and all to the deadness of the Barrowdowns

Welcome to the Downs! That frequently asked question is answered, among others, on the Forum FAQ thread, at the top of this forum's main page. For more information, you can also read the Forum Policies thread. Hope you enjoy yourself here!

This is for all the RPGer's. Please go here. (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=19&t=000005)

Now there is an abundance of advice in this thread and also in the Novices and Newcomers part one too. SO don't think not to read them just because they are old and are to welcome Newly deads.

Welcome, Newly Deads. Have fun Haunting the Downs.
