Unlike other message boards, the Barrow-Downs does not require new members to introduce themselves before posting. If you feel the need to announce your arrival, please do so here rather than opening a new thread for that purpose.
Welcome to the Barrow-Downs everyone!

Hello. I am not too new here, but, I just want to make some new friends, be acquainted with some Barrow-Downers, so, if anyone is willing to talk, I would be happy to.
Hope to see some of you guys/gals around!

Welcome Sindahir and Theoric Windcaller! smilies/smile.gif
Glad to have you. Enjoy your time here, but remember to post well, stay on topic, don't annoy the moderators, and use the search function before putting up a new thread. Private Messaging is a way to 'chat' with members so that the threads don't get chatty and exclusive. If either of you need help, feel free to PM a member or a moderator, and they'll be more than happy to help! Have fun! smilies/smile.gif

Hi, I'm a big Tolkien fan from India. I've been registered for a long time but have never come to the forums before. At least, I came once and made a couple of posts or so.
I was introduced to Tolkien 6 years ago when I was only 10. I don't mind "any" of the changes made in TTT. I think that Peter Jackson has done a great job. I'm a big fan (almost as big as Tolkien's) of Blind Guardian which is a metal band. They have recorded a whole album (Nightfall in Middle Earth) dedicated to The Silmarillion.

Greetings, all.
I am new to this board, but not new to Tolkien. I've been looking around for a while, and thought I'd just stop by to say hello to everyone here.
I've read The Hobbit, LotR, the Silmarillion, the UT, and all of the histories except #11 (which I can't find!!!)
My favorite of Tolkien's works is Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth (hence my name) - it makes me cry every time I read it, from the poetry of the language and the tragedy of the story.
I'm sure I'll have fun exploring this site!

Hi!
I'm Cami Goodchild, one of the moderators in the Shire, which is our beginning RPG foum. Feel free to come down in character and introduce yourself in the Green Dragon Inn and take a look at our RPGs.
You'll also want to have a look at the policies and FAQs that appear at the very beginning of Novices and Newcomers. For those of us who love Tolkien, we consider this a spcial site. Have fun, but please try to follow the general rules. That means no chat expressions. Take care with your writing. Use the preview button and look over your post before you submit it to make sure that the spelling and grammar is the best you can do.
Also become familiar with the search key which is in the top right hand corner of the page. You can use that to find tons of information on topics that interest you. Also, that way you won't be posting a duplicate thread on something that's already been discussed twenty times before. Feel free to pull up old threads and join in the conversation.

Good day to you, celeborn and all other new members! Welcome to the Barrow Downs. This is a forum where Tolkien fans and fanatics can come together to discuss his works. We also tend to form great friendships and cultivate respect for each other and our views.
Try to post well and in standard English(although mistakes are fine if English is not your first language!), not 'chat-speak.' Also, use the search function to research topics of interest to you or before you post a new topic, so that we don't have redundant threads that are shut down. Read the forum rules at the top of each forum before you post as well.
One final word- RESPECT! We all come from different areas, different backgrounds and religions, and different world-views. Surprisingly and wonderfully, we get along very well together because we respect the fact that every one has their own opinion and we remember that being unique is beautiful. Our tapestry of people here is a lovely unity because all 'threads' are different. smilies/smile.gif If you disagree with another person, do so with tact and kindness. So don't be afraid to voice your opinion, but respect others' rights to do so as well.
If you have any further questions, feel free to PM(private message) me or any other members. We are more than happy to help you out! smilies/smile.gif
Peace

Aaye Middle-Earthers,
A friend of mine told me about this message board, and I decided to sign up for it since I'll be beginning my quest to read the entire LotR trilogy shortly--I've been meaning to do it for years, ever since I read the Hobbit, but things have kept coming up, and I was having trouble finding the books for a price I felt was decent (I never borrow books from the library or anything, I always like to own them). Anyway, I'm currently reading the 5th Harry Potter book because I figure that's a nice short, 1-3 day read, but IMMEDIATELY after that I'll be starting LotR and then I'll probably be posting more in order to ask questions about things I've forgotten from the Hobbit or things I don't understand as well from the books. Have fun beung dead you all.
And yes sometimes we peve each other off, but ,most of us understand that we are not all the same. I have seen a few people chastised for insulting others, (either that or bad spelling);those insults were degrading. One that I saw was saying how stupid a particular thread was, and was not to kind to the poster..... that was not cool.
The best advise I can give is to look at an argument from all sides, and not flame people. And whaterver you do do not change yourself(just because you hate Harry Potter) or you veiws just because you think someone got hurt over it.
Some of the Mods are great, others I don't agree with, but I like to treat them with the same way as my instructors. I give them what they want. So if you stay on topic, don't insult people and say intelagent things you will do fine.
Oh yes and if you can't spell, like me, start to use word, word perfect, or any other program with a spell checker. This works for most of the time , but not always.

There is so much to read here, which is good as that's what I like to do. But I hope to join in on some good Tolkien discussions in the future. I first read the LotR in the early-mid 80's and since the movies came out I've re-read them once already and am currently at the end of TT, having just finished the chapter, "Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbits." I guess while I'm at it, I'll confess that I've yet to read the Silmarillion. smilies/frown.gif Soon though! Anyway, it's nice to meet you all and here's to a future of sharing.

Well, mrslegolastoyou, there are a few ways you can go back and look at the thread.... or you can choose the send me an e-mail when someone replies to this post box, in the Post a reply screen ,thing at the bottom under the smiles. If you cant find the thread you can go to who's online and then click on your name and then click on see recent posts and you can find it that way. Have fun being dead.

Greetings all!
I have been looking around for a great Tolkien forum for about three months now and not once did I hear about Barrow-Downs. All the other forums I belonged to were dull or the people in it were (if you don’t mind me saying) idiots. In the past three months I have belonged to ten forums and they all were a waste of time! Only today did I hear about Barrow-Downs from an email-friend. I have explored the dead land of Barrow-Downs and it is the greatest forum I have come across in the past three months. So again I say greetings all!
I have read The Hobbit and I treasured it. And I have read The Lord of the Rings and I enjoyed the book like I have never enjoyed a book before. All the books I have read in my short life (I am fourteen years old smilies/biggrin.gif) are dull next to the Lord of the Rings.
I can’t wait to be acquainted to all of you. And yes I shall enjoy being dead smilies/wink.gif (a term I see you use!). One last thing, if I shall be needing any help which of you may I contact?
See you around

HI I would like to tell u a story about me. For all of you who Chat here on the barowdowns you probably know me I am Mustang or Soda but tonight a person came to my house and we were on the two computers and both went on the Barrowdowns. I was Mustang and she was devilishbrat43. For all of those who were on when this occured notice that we were both on at the same time (just on different computers because my family uses an internet router) devilishbrat43 insulted many people and this chat site (with words that I will not post) Therefor someone sent Ulmo my family's IP adress and he banned this internet connction from the barowdowns channel. And I would like someone who chats here to tell my story to the chatters and Please Ulmo remove the ban because she was on as a one-time thing (at least at my house) and I would very much appreciate it if you would allow me to chat.

Hi everyone! Anyone remember me? I haven't come here in a loooong time (well, over a month). I would love to give you a good excuse as to why I left, but--alas!--I don't have one. A few moments ago, I was trying to free up some disk space, when I came across a Word document titled "BDers sigs." So, naturally, I clicked on it. Does anyone remember my story about my seven-page document filled with BDer's sigs that I accidentally deleted? Well, I just found it again. Turns out, I didn't delete it after all; I just saved it in some weird place. Anyways, I started reading it, and I swear I was crying before the end. I missed you guys so much! After reading it, I decided to come back here, log in, and say hi! So... hi! Sorry if most of this is just rambling, you can delete it if you want, BW.

well, I'm new, but I'm not new to the internet so don't call me a newbie :P. Lol *puts hand up in a defensive action* Hey, wouldn't dream of it, newbi- er, I mean Dynaviir. smilies/tongue.gif What is that in your signature, the quote- evidently from a story or something. What is it?
Diamond, I love your avatar! Very cute.
must trully say that I am totally addicted to this wonderful site Esgallhugwen, join the club, my friend, join the club! smilies/smile.gif I like your name by the way. The last part is like 'maiden of the hugs'! smilies/biggrin.gif
Sirithheruwen, welcome also. A fanfiction you say? Lol, the name made me smile. If you're into writing, try the RPG room- the Shire is a good place to start; just drop by at the Green Dragon.
StarJewel, or shall I say blondie, now you have managed to get to this part smilies/biggrin.gif, may I offer a belated welcome to the site!
Eressië Ailin: now, thats just cheeky. Honestly, posting here and fishing for welcome backs.... smilies/biggrin.gif nah, I'm kidding, welcome back sweetie. Sure, I remember that story- its in the Top Ten Signs You're Addicted to The Barrowdowns thread in the Barrowdowns section.
Mustang- I don't visit the chat myself, as my aol connection has a delightful tendency to shut down when I try to get onto it (*sigh*), but I have a fair idea that Ulmo is Legolas, one of the moderators- I'm not entirely sure if he does frequent the chat, but I'm pretty sure he does. If this is the case (and I hope to goodness it is or I'm making a right fool of myself!) If you want to get in touch with him, go to the 'search' option at the top right of your screen, across from the Barrowdowns sword logo, and type in Legolas's name and his member number (#958) in the correct parts. It will come up with a list of his posts; go to one of these and click on the PM option at the top of his post and explain his problem.
Beautiful Dawn- another beautiful name- welcome to the Downs! Your avatar is lovely as well, very picturesque. Your signature I like as well;
"The dawn is as beautiful as the fairest elf"
- very thoughtful, although you may have to fight it out with a few of the Luthiens, Arwens, Tinuviels and Galadriels!
Well, now I've been through this page and I think if I go any further all the niceness may have a permanent effect on me- God forbid! smilies/biggrin.gif
Welcome to all newbies, those who I have mentioned and all others, of course, and do stop by in the Green Dragon and say hi to the Innkeeper!

Well hello to all the newbees who have come to be part of our wonderful conversations here at the downs! Right now I feel very "new" even though I have only been gone for two weeks. The reason I was gone was that I was taking a wonderful vacation in California, and I was also attending the Comic-Con convention in San Diego. Where I got to meet and see many people from the LOTR films.
I considered a few times while I was going on the computer at TheOneRing.net booth (where I was looking at the news about the films) if they wouldn't notice if I just checked out for a moment what was going on here (because I sadly don't have my own portable computer), but I was worried that I would get in trouble.
I am so glad to be back in the downs, it is such a nice place to be.

Hey, I'm new to the site. I found it while searching for a hobbit/elf name generator. I've heard about the Lord of the Rings series all my life and just recently decided to read it after watching the first movie. I fell in love with _The Hobbit_ and have read up to the Helms Deep chapter of TTT so far (as well as briefly looking over other chapters of TTT and RotK... what? I wanted to see if any of the main characters got killed off).

Hi ya all!
I consider myself as a newbe, even though I have spent about three whole-non-stop months here. You see, I just found this thread among the millions, yeah I feel like there are millions of threads here. It's almost confusing for a individ like me.. smilies/biggrin.gif
Anyway, the only thing I regret doing when I registered, was the name....*sigh* smilies/frown.gif
Why? Why? Why? I can't understand why I registered as Novnarwen. Now I really want to change, but I'll just stick to this.
What about Tom Bombadil's yellow boots? (I really want that nick..)
Or Scary/Freaky Oliphant? (I want that one too..)
Okey, enough about my whining... It's my own fault..*sigh*
Hmmm... That was about it, for now.. I guess..

Oh, I feel loved now!!! smilies/wink.gif
In our history (not only Middle-earth) we have barrows for our dead kings. The history (ME this time) of the Barrowdowns is a whole civilization that fell long ages ago. Anyway, we (i.e. the members of the BD forums) are Newly Deceased for a few Posts, and then we start to gain rank. "Animated Skeleton" "Pile o'Bones" "Haunting Spirit" "Shade of Carn-Dum" and finally "Ghost Prince of Cardolan". If you have always posted intelligently and respectfully, not only do you contribute to the forums and do not waste space, you get to choose your own title. This is why you will see various people with titles such as "Fair and Cold" - Lush has that one. smilies/redface.gif
Post well. It is often helpful to read the Faq first and any announcement a mod puts up. smilies/tongue.gif
Love and blessings to you all,

Hey all, I'm Aundario. I absolutely love the J.R.R. Tolkien books. Probably not as much as most here, but I still think they're brilliant. I'm currently reading the Two Towers (first time), and I'm in the part where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are about to enter Fangorn. Totally awesome!!! All of what I've read so far is much better than the movies. I hope I'll be able to get along with every one here.

Welcome to the Barrowdowns, Aundario!!
Remember to post well and be respectful.
You may like to try out some Role Playing Games, beginning in the Green Dragon in the Shire, or you may like to join our friendly debates about various things in either the Movies or Books forums. Middle-earth Mirth is also a great place; you may find and contribute to some hilarious threads.
But most of all, remember to enjoy the Barrowdowns.
Faqs etc. are always helpful; it's a good idea to read those.
If you need any help, feel free to ask me.
Cheers,

Hello all,
I am new here... I'm mostly interested in RPGing and in anything Rohan. I'll be looking around and see what i can find here. Any place you could recomment where I could start?
Yavanna228
08-17-2003, 12:46 PM
Welcome Temril!
For RPGing, start in The Shire forum. Also, the Novices and Newcomers forum is an ideal place for you to start your experience on this board. Using the 'search' function can help you find things specifically about Rohan, or any other subject you so desire. One tip: make sure you read the rules and FAQ in each forum. Make sure you are polite, on topic, and contribute well to the discussion whenever you post, and you'll do just fine here. smilies/smile.gif
If you have any further questions, feel free to PM me or any other member here. We'd be happy to help! smilies/smile.gif

Hello and welcome to the Barrow Downs, Temril.
If you are interested in gaming, please check out the forum called The Shire, where people new to the Downs learn about gaming here. Introduce your character at The Green Dragon Inn and get to know the mods there, piosennial and Child of the Seventh Age. New Shire games are often advertised there. You can also check out the discussion threads for games there to see how to apply to join a Shire game.
Have fun!

Also in the RPG rooms follow the rules! read the Red Book or what ever they have for rules before you try to join in so you can save Poi and the other shire mods frustration.

Welcome forest walker person. and all the rest of the newly dead. I have taken to heart to post seldom and not to get all excited over the rank under your screen name. The only place I will post everyday is in real good discussions or in the RP bords. Poi and the rest of the mods do a great job and need to be respected. If Poi(poisonel[sp?) does a save for you or edets your post don't get balistic, it is for your own good. Not to mention before you you even travers into the inn you should have already read the rules in the Red book. But like I have stated before, give the mods what they want, and don't hate them and especially don't flaim them or anyone else! Have fun but not at someone elses expense and please post intelagently.
And by-the-way it is two taps of the enter key to make a seperate paragraph not one.

Having fun playing with you, *Arwen* sweetie. Hope to see you ever more around there.
Finafyr, welcome - I do like your name. Sounds sort of delicate, yet fiery. I like very much. As for being a Tolkien-lover...well, you're in good and plentiful company here!
Eleriina - (the same goes for Finafyr for your name, lovely.) Have a try at the books - you may be surprised. The discussions are generally interesting for all, no matter what age (I am also 14 smilies/smile.gif ). Don't feel restricted to one forum though - most all of the sections in the barrowdowns are good *cough*RPGing*cough* smilies/wink.gif
Forest Walker - nice avatar. An old member, huh? Well, at least you'll know your way around! And as for getting silly under the influence of caffeine or chocolate...ah, I see several people over there who will be glad to make your acquaintance! smilies/biggrin.gif
Unwashed Hobbit - lol, I like the name. Hmm, stinker...
Elaron - nice sig, thoughtful, and true. As for knowledge - you'll also find yourself in good company, and I'm sure your knowledge and quest for it will be welcomed. smilies/smile.gif
Ughosh - as Tarien said, wow, fearsome name! *clinks glass against Ughosh's, careful not to knock over the bloodstained axe nearby* smilies/wink.gif

Hello people and creatures of Middle Earth.
I am new to this forum but not to LOTR. I am very interested in getting into some good discussions about LOTR. I know a fair amount about Lord of the Rings for a teenager. I was interested in it before the movie was even thought of. I chose to be Gimli because if i had been put in that book, there would be an exact resemblence to me and Gimli Elf-friend, Son of Gloin. I am interested in learning more about everyone in here so send me an email.

Gimli welcome you arnot alone in your before the movie facination. I can guarantee that there are a few other out there on the Barrowdowns that are fan from way back.
Matt-- arn't you the person who had the dancing chicken?
And to all the rest of the Newly deads out there her is a little something that is a bit of good advice.
Welcome all, enjoy being dead( this is getting redundant) Imralris, I swear I won't bite your head off if you skrew up. Heak if you look at some of my old post, you would be in tears just because of the spelling. And when you are new there is more leaway, not to mention the mods are great here. Just the other say Poi had to edit my Post in one of the RPGs I am in because I got stupid and forgot to turn off my sig. Any way I hope you enjoy yourselves all you newly dead people. ( the only reason I am at the wight level and not higher is because I am carefull what I post. Hey to those of you who are new!
For those of you who don't know, we try to use proper grammar and avoid chatspeak on the forums. (The chat room is of course another story.) It makes it a great deal easier to follow your train of thought that way.
Welcome to the Downs, and enjoy being d.ead!

Hello!
I'm new here. But not new to Tolkien books. I'm from México, but right now I'm living in USA.
I hope we can have a great time talking about the greatest fantasy books ever written.
Namarië...

Alrighty then. Here on the Barrow Downs, ther are a few people who can't understand chat speak. For many of them English is a second language. Others, like myself just palin don't get alot of it. We here try our best not to use it out of respect for other and the fact that it is realy anoying when someone is tallking about their seeds and who are peeps and what is BTW and all that other stuff. This respect thing ties in with not flaiming anyone or verbaly bashing someone. Have fun but not at someone elses expence.
If you want to join an RP you need to read here. (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=19&t=000005) After this you need to go and post here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=19&t=000111).
Have a great time.

Hi! I'm new here, and just wanted to say a few words about myself. My favorite Tolkien book is LOTR: FOTR, and I wonder when they're going to put Faramir in the movie. smilies/wink.gif Namarie,
