Kettle of fish
08-12-2002, 02:58 AM
When I stuck 'Kettle of Fish' in the name generator I got:

Loathsome Black Rider

and Elvish: Dûrtinco

I quite like the Loathsome Black Rider bit. The Durtinco doesn't sound like a flowing elvish name.

It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "

"Here is set G for Galadriel, but also it may stand for garden in your tounge. In this box there is earth from my orchard. If you keep it and see your home again at last, then perhaps it may reward you. Though you should find all barren and laid waste, there will be few gardens in Middle Earth that will bloom like your garden, if you sprinkle this earth there. "
Sam went red to the ears and muttered something inaudible, as he clutched the box and bowed as well as he could.

Boromir's Lady
08-13-2002, 10:38 PM
Mine isn't all that original. I picked 'Boromir's Lady' because quite simply I want to be 'Boromir's Lady'!! smilies/biggrin.gif

I liked his character, I am drawn to the 'Anti-hero' type. The fact that he lusted for the ring's power to help his people, only to find out just how evil it was, then trying to make amends in the little time he had left.

Well the first is obvious, easy to remember and spell.

Acutally the story of Eol and Maeglin was the first story that I was drawn to in the Silmarillion, the character that began the obession for the Cliffnotes project. Eol also is a cool name! smilies/biggrin.gif

the phantom
08-14-2002, 10:59 PM
In elementary school I used to do all sorts of things to entertain my friends. I would steal chalk from the chalk board and books from the inside of my teacher's desk, and I'd always do it while the teacher was in the room watching us. I was slick. One time I went up to talk to the teacher at her desk and stole a book, a pencil holder, and her glasses off the desk while she was looking right at me and talking to me. I would always place these items on the teacher's desk the following day when she wasn't in the room, and I'd always have a sticky note attached that read "from the Phantom". Eventually a classmate blew the whistle on me and I got in trouble.
Later on, when I was in high school, the kids in my music theory and music composition courses started calling me 'phantom' because I was always singing or humming Phantom of the Opera tunes. (I love Phantom of the Opera) This nickname caught on with my friends because I was still known for doing all sorts of sneaky pranks and never getting caught.
I really liked the sound of "The Phantom", it sounds so mysterious, so I let everybody call me that and have used that name for e-mail and stuff ever since.

Galadel Vinorel
08-15-2002, 11:40 AM
My name means "Light of the Stars", "Morning Star" in Elvish. I love Elvish, and my friends and I decided to make up Elvish names for ourselves. We even have a sort of LOTR Fan Club called the Lissiranels, which, of course is in Elvish, and means "The Sweet Wanderers of the Stars". In this group we have Rohan names, Elvish names, Orc names, Secret names, Hobbit names, Dwarf names, Goldberry names (they have to do with water), names for our swords, names for our horses, and we even have Elvish Birthdays. We have a very large amount of people in this group, and all of us LOVE LOTR. smilies/cool.gif

Vinyaampawen
08-16-2002, 11:23 AM
Well my original nickname was "Xena" after the warrior princess. My friends gave that name to me because I was a warrior in real life in my profession....defending the helpless, etc.

Then I got the nickname "Arwen" because of LOTR but that name has been taken many times in this forum and other LOTR/Tolkein sites.

Sorry I could not read through everyone's posts but I am traveling in Europe and don't have a lot of time to log in.

Ciao!
Vinyaampawen

P.S. So now with the new rules, is my name too long? smilies/cool.gif

Armadoin
09-19-2002, 02:14 PM
I chose my name from the main character of a book I am writing. So far it is very interesting. I f you ever see a book with that name in the title you will know its me! It doesn't have to do with Tolkien, but I thought it sounded almost Elvish, Don't you? smilies/cool.gif

Varda's Wilwarin
09-20-2002, 01:50 AM
Yes like many my fave names were taken smilies/mad.gif I am no way in the league of such noble, courageous and chivalrous charactors as those of the fellowship so I chose Wilwarin which was taken so I had to embellish a little.

During the spring of Arda, which was in the years of the Lamps, the Valar brought forth forests and may creatures that had no voice, yet were beautiful to behold. Among them was the Wilwarin, which in later times Men called the Butterfly. So content were the Valar with this lovely creature that, when Varda took the silver dew of Telperion to make brilliant the light of the Stars, she also placed the shape of the Wilwarin as a constellation among the wide-wheeling Stars of the heavens.

Selmo

Although I am a hobbit, my name is elvish.

My given name is William.
Selmo is derived from the Quenya for will.

Tirned Tinnu
09-20-2002, 01:41 PM
I didn't choose my nick, it was given to me as a suggestion from a member of another bboard. She remarked the I should be called "Watcher of the darkness" but I did not like the implication that I should be keeping a lookout for Melkor for the rest of my life - so I changed it to "Twilight" as in the light before the stars. Not wanting to be yet another Tinuviel, I changed it to the nuetral form, and it sounded rather Dark Elf to me. I thought that was more in my line, you know, hunting the occasional foul creature and being a general Ranger or Wood Elf. Certainly I am not about to bandy with fallen angels. smilies/smile.gif Though it was a nice thought and a vote of confidence on her part. smilies/biggrin.gif

My name means "Moon's Day" in Quenyan. I picked it out of a Tolkien handbook, that and I like stars and moons and such. Very much similar to my old name: Elenya, star's day

Tanraugwen Greenleaf

hobbitlass
09-21-2002, 02:37 PM
Well, I'm Hobbitlass because I sure as heck look like one. I have naturally curly dark-brown hair, green eyes (I don't think that one matters), very short, love to eat therefore a round tummy, and I am bare-footed all the time! I like simple things and a simple lifestyle and just plain silliness. I don't believe in reincarnation but this does make me wonder smilies/biggrin.gif . And as for -lass, I'm a girl!

Susan Delgado
09-21-2002, 05:20 PM
Mine's from a Stephen King book that I finished literally minutes before I registered here. Susan Delgado was my favorite character in the book and she died. Since we're all dead here, it seemed appropriate.
edit: Also, Susan is really one of my names, so that made it even better. smilies/smile.gif

Vinyaampawen
09-22-2002, 11:14 AM
Vinyaampawen is the elven version of my real name. On the internet I am known as Arwen based on you know who, Arwen in the LOTR. However, as you might guess, on this site the name "Arwen" has been taken many times over.

I am particularly drawn to the elves in the LOTR because they lived in the trees (I love trees! I use to climb in them all the time when I was a child much to the chagrin of my parents smilies/smile.gif, are wise, immortal, defiant and courageous...fighting against evil...much as I do in real life.

Arwen is a fighter in her own way against the Lord of Darkness and elven women were known as warriors and fought in the many battles against evil. In fact, in the movie version of LOTR/Fellowship of the Ring, Arwen raised her sword against the Ringwraiths from across the river as she was holding onto Frodo and one of her most famous lines is, "If you want want him, come and take him!". That's my girl!!!!

This thread is quite interesting. Sorry to have been away for so long!

One of the advantages of having a name like 'Kettle of Fish' is that it is highly unlikely someone has gotten ahead of you and claimed it.

09-23-2002, 10:52 AM
I can´t believe I haven´t posted here already (or have I? Didn´t see a post by me...). Well, simply put: Eärendil is my fave in the Silmarillion, and the Silmarillion is my all time fave book. Couldn´t have a better name. And it wasn´t taken.... smilies/smile.gif Great, eh? smilies/wink.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Schmendrick
09-23-2002, 11:43 AM
Well, I didn't want to take my name from the LOTR, since it was somehow too obvious, so I took my name from the wonderful book "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S. Beagle (anyone read it?).Schmendrick is a wonderful character, a wizard, whose magic never obeys him and so he's "doomed" to immortality (wandering around the world, "eternally inefficient", as it says in the book), until he learns to use his magic right(or until he learns that the magic uses him, not the other way around)...and of course, in the end, he then becomes a powerful magician and - a mortal. I feel like he's my alter ego, for some reason... smilies/wink.gif

Supreme Leader
09-23-2002, 12:54 PM
Well, I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan (but don't hold that against me). smilies/biggrin.gif
Anyway, a couple of years ago I was trying to come up with someting MJ-related that wasn't already taken and I remembered a character name from a 3D-movie he made in -87 called Supreme Leader (played by Angelica Houston). So that's what I chose. It only remains to be seen wether I'll live up to the name or no. smilies/tongue.gif
I would like to have a Tolkien-related nick as well, but I think it'd just get confusing. Besides, it's difficult coming up with something unique that fits me.

Evisse the Blue
09-24-2002, 03:08 AM
well, my name - 'Evisse' is the name of a good witch from a story I once read; and the 'Blue' part has nothing to do with Blue Wizards, as most of you probably think; it's simply the name of my Cocker Spaniel! She's such a cutie I had to pay homage to her!

But I'm getting kinda bored of it - does any of you know how I can change my nick??

Estelyn Telcontar
09-24-2002, 08:59 AM
Sorry, Evisse - the only way to do that is to register anew with a new nick, losing the posts you have so far - and confusing all of us! If you want to try out a different name, how about joining one of the RPGs and creating a new character with a new name? That way we'll still recognize you (by your displayed name), and you can play with something different!

Eärendil
09-24-2002, 10:13 AM
Oh, I forgot to say...Eärendil is a bit similar to me, in "personality", in some ways. But what ways...I´ll leave that for you to guess yourselves. smilies/wink.gif Anyway, I love my name, very proud to have it!

eleniwilwarin
09-24-2002, 10:53 AM
i took the name eleniwilwarin because of two things...
1. i love stars and i liked the elvish word for butterfly (wilwarin)
2. i am like a butterfly sometimes, i like to go far away on adventures, and attracted to beautiful things... smilies/smile.gif

09-30-2002, 04:02 AM

smilies/biggrin.gif

Gliniel
09-30-2002, 10:01 AM
I picked my name for a pretty dumb reason actually. My school is an arts conservatory, so there's plenty of random practice rooms and dance studios with these teeny horizontal windows near the top. After my a.m. general studies classes I always pass by one of the dance studios and peek in the little windows, but since I'm so short ( smilies/mad.gif ) the people inside can only see my eyes. One day someone approached me and told me how they were taking class and happened to look at the window to see two shining green eyes looking back at them (mine obviously, and I'm not kidding!). So, as y'all probably know, the stem "glin" means gleam, especially referring to the eyes. So I feminized (sp?) it, and that's that.

elfling
10-02-2002, 09:55 PM
Well Elfling is easy. I feel like i'm hobbit or halfling like and a little elf like. no Big Mystery. I,m also Kali in some places because I really liked Merry's character and if any of you read the many appendixes Kalimac or Kali is Merry's real hobbit name.

Salix
10-04-2002, 06:59 PM
My nickname came from a time that I was browsing through my Latin-to-English (and other way round) dictionary after I had found out that my name didn't sound too great, and I looked up willow for some reason, and there was written 'Salix'. I liked the word a bit darn much, and I'm glad I'm keeping it.

mithuel
10-04-2002, 09:42 PM
I first thought of my name when I was about ten . I was wandering through the forest and the trees whispered it to me. In full it is Mithuel Solontiel. I don't know if it means anything in Elvish, but I'm checking out some of the language sites recommended to try and learn some and find out. Anyway, when I recently found the barrow downs site (and I'm really glad I did) I looked at all the beautiful names people used and remembered the name from all those years ago. Maybe the Elves whispered it to me again... smilies/smile.gif

Eruialiwen
10-05-2002, 06:28 PM
The reason for my nickname is fairly simple, really. Some months ago I went to "Who Were You in Middle-Earth?" and Eruialiwen was the Elvish form of my name smilies/wink.gif Then I came back and did it again, only that time my name came up as Celebechoriel...I liked the first one better so I use that one for anything Tolkien-related smilies/cool.gif

I used to have an elvish name in here, Navmarien. I got it from the name generator. but something screwy happened and I couldn't use it anymore, I don't know why. Tangerine is the name of a song I like...even though the title really didn't fit in with the rest of the lyrics. Also I like how they smell. I know that sounds kinda stupid, but I couldn't think of anything better at the time, and that seemd kind of neat and different in here at the time. smilies/rolleyes.gif

10-27-2002, 10:47 PM
Well I chose my name because my favortie show is Cowboy Bebop and the girl on their is named Faye. I was lke OOOO I like dat name! So I chose that for my character. I chose to be a Took because I love Pippin. He's da best!

Diamond18
10-27-2002, 11:24 PM
Hmmm, so I've finally got around to posting in this thread. I've been meaning to, but I wanted to the read the whole thing first. So now that's out of the way...

I chose my name because I love Pippin, and according to the family trees and the Tale of Years in the Appendix, he married "Diamond of Long Cleeve". I tried to use that or "Diamond Took", but they were both taken. (I was hoping to see those people in this thread, but so far I haven't come across those names anywhere).

Also, I imagine that I'm somewhat like Diamond would be. Hobbits are homebodies, but I figure that any hobbit lass who would marry Pippin would be interested in his adventures (or at least impressed by his Gondorian uniform). I like to read about danger and adventure in books and watch it in movies, but for my real life I like things nice and boring!

And the 18 is just my age. I didn't try just plain Diamond because after the first two didn't work I figured that would be taken as well. Now I wish I'd added something more interesting to "Diamond", but it's too late for that.

Arwen_Evenstar
10-28-2002, 04:38 AM
I chose Arwen Evenstar, because I respect and admire her. She has such a strong will, and she radiates majesty. Plus she is an elf and i am totally and utterly in love with all elves!! smilies/rolleyes.gif

Um, my friend who moved to Mumbai used to call me that...

Zohariel
10-28-2002, 10:35 AM
In 'Northern lights' Zohariel is just one of the names they dropped. I think it is a dead person's daemon. I thought it sounded really dark & cool.

Bright Rage (quenya, well more accurately qenya, its sort of archaic).

A question i have wondered for a while is are the name generators on the site just random or do they have some sort of algorithm behind them (don’t try and tell me its got Quenya and Sindarin programmed in)

For the love of god. Can’t you people get a boyfriend or something? You don’t love Elves cause they have long blonde hair or pretty eyes! You love them because they are wise and courageous, and their beauty is in their song and lore. Dammit people will never get it.

Orual
10-30-2002, 06:28 PM
"Orual" is the name of the main character in C.S. Lewis' "Till We Have Faces." I liked her, and I was sick of my old nickname that nobody could spell (it was only "Soleil," it's not THAT hard), and the rest is history.

A question i have wondered for a while is are the name generators on the site just random or do they have some sort of algorithm behind them (don’t try and tell me its got Quenya and Sindarin programmed in)

Yes, Galorme, the name generator is completely random, and not a true translation of your name.

Lindril Arvilya
11-03-2002, 09:37 AM
My Wiccan name is Phoenix Songheart, from my various u-turn changes in my life (from various traumas reborn and all) and my love (it truly is, I'd give up anything for it) of music.
So I translated it myself (none of that name generator stuff). However, I couldn't find the exact terms, so I ended up with "Lindril Arvilya"- "Songflame Skylover". Close enough I think.

arelendil
11-04-2002, 11:20 AM
Hi everyone! i too had trouble when signing in. where are all the people gone they take the names and vanish! How annoying! Anyway my friends all call me "Elwen" which is 'star maiden' but it had gone so i had to use the silm and find another name. 'arelendil' meaning 'noble star friend' i totally forgot that elendil was a person until i had pressed return. I don't suppose all the names that are taken and not used could be cancelled, i hate having to remember two names!

Morgul Queen
11-04-2002, 06:15 PM
I chose mine because I have a strange facination with the Nazgul, Minas Morgul and (even stranger) Angmar.
I was gonna be Angmar Queen but that would mean kicking the Witch King out of Angmar and that would take too much time... smilies/evil.gif

I chose my nickname for two reasons. 1) I'm a total pyromanic smilies/evil.gif (hence the _Flame part), and my favorite book (besides LotR naturally) is Firestarter by Stephen King. 2) The Sapphire part goes with my pen name on Fanfiction.net: SapphireMeriadocTook, which I chose because Merry (Meriadoc) and Pippin (Took) are my two favorite characters in LotR. Sapphire just sounded cool. smilies/wink.gif smilies/cool.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

I only know of one other person who spells it the same, and she's the local MP for my area! I don't think she'll be on this site somehow...

Peri
11-07-2002, 03:07 PM
Well, I chose the nickname Peri because that's what my LOTR friends call me because I was born with one pointed ear null null

Esgal
11-07-2002, 04:57 PM
the name "Esgal" means "Hidden" in Quenya, and I chose it for a character in one of my fan fictions, who is also a half-elf. His other name is "Galen" for his green eyes, but Esgal is more suiting for his character and the main plot of the story.
*shrugs* I just wanted something different.

kaleidoscope

Easy enough question:

My name "Rynoah" is a name I made up for my "wereside" (for those of you who know about therianthropy, you'll know what I'm talking about). The "Overly-Happy" part was just something I made up on a last-second basis, based on how I act in the chatroom (when I'm there, which is seldom).

Lyra Greenleaf
02-23-2003, 05:09 PM
My name is a combination of my fave book (LOTR, obviously) and one of my other runners up (his dark materials, Philip Pullman- read it people)

oh yeah, with a big dollop of Orlando love!

Kates Frodo Temp
02-24-2003, 07:53 PM
My name is Kates Frodo because my friend Kate introduced me to LotR, and she calls me Frodo. That's an honor coming from someone who's read LotR since fourth grade! Oh, yeah, the "Temp" stands for temporary, because this is only my temporary registration. I can't get on my own computer to figure out what my password is for my actual name (Kates Frodo2) until next week, cuz my friend wrecked my computer. (Grrrrroooooaaannnn)

Nuinatariel
02-24-2003, 08:25 PM
Lyra, you read His Dark Materials, too? Awesome! I love those books!

The reason for my nickname is simply because this is what came up for me on the name generator here. Eventually I hope to figure out what it means, but for now I'm too lazy to look it up. smilies/rolleyes.gif

Eressië Ailin
02-24-2003, 08:33 PM
STUPID NAME GENERATOR!!!

yeah... I don't like the name generator...

Just in case there is some one here who doesn't know, the name generator doesn't translate your name into Elvish or any other language, it just generates a name, hence the name: The Name Generator.

My screen name is my first and middle name in Quenya. Eressië Ailin~ Lonely lake, more or less.

Rochelle
02-24-2003, 08:45 PM
I chose Rochelle because I wanted to combine two of my favorite races...Rohan and Elves.

Roch means horse in Sindarin...and what is Rohan most noted for? Horses.

So hence I became Rochelle. I was thinking Rochiel which is how it should be if it was completely elvish...but the 'elle' gives it more of a "human" touch smilies/biggrin.gif Or so I think...

Rina
02-24-2003, 09:29 PM
I chose Rina, since this is the elven translation (roughly) for my real name, which means "Crown." I actually took it from "Elerrina" which means "Crowned with Stars," another name for Taniquetil in The Silmarillion.

GaladrieloftheOlden
02-24-2003, 09:32 PM
i am obsessed with LotR more than with anything else, but my runner up would most definitely be His Dark Materals(I need a new copy- mine has literally fallen apart from too much handling. My copy of Fellowship, too.) GaladrieloftheOlden came from nowhere in paricular, and I don't like it anymore, but it's not worth getting a new account and starting over. I like my nicknames on other sites better- I've got Modern_Evenstar, Mademoiselle_Greenleaf, OrlandosElf, IzzyGoneElf, and more that I can't remember right now. I like those more, but at least I didn't choose something really crummy. Keep the thread going, this is probabaly one of the longest and one of the funnest to read.

Imladrien
02-25-2003, 09:44 AM
My first name is "Dale" and I am a woman. I played around with Quenya and Sindarin words for "valley" -- but then had a tough time registering my preferred names, here or elsewhere -- translated they all meant "valley girl" -- so I ended up settling for Imladrien, but now it is growing on me.

02-25-2003, 01:01 PM
I had a sort of fanfiction thing going on in my head, I never wrote it down so I've sort of forgotten it. Anyway, there was one character in it who's nickname was Dragoneyes, I thought it was a cool name so I used it. (I forgot to put a capital letter at the beginning though smilies/mad.gif )

Airehiriel
02-25-2003, 01:40 PM
I tried several different versions of my name. You know, include my middle name, just middle initial, no middle name, my maiden name, my first married last name...etc. Well, I didn't care for what I was getting with the Elf names. So I started putting in different words. Finally I put in "White Elf" and I got Airehiriel. I thought it had a nice ring to it, so there you have it.

I hate when this happens to me. I hate it worse than screaming children and that's saying a lot.

My first name is "Monyca", but I go by Lynn or Lynne (the latter of which is the true spelling for my middle name) now, due to some problems in middle school. Only close friends and family call me by my first name.

The Saucepan Man
02-25-2003, 10:00 PM
Since there were already so many great names from or inspired by the books, I decided to go for something non-Tolkien, but still fantasy-related.

The Faraway Tree books by Enid Blyton had been my favourite books as a child pre-The Hobbit and, at the time I registered, I was reading them to my daughter, So, I chose the name of the character in them that appealed to me the most, the inimitable Saucepan Man.

It has since dawned on me that there is a vague LotR connection, with Sam and his pots and pans.

Nuinatariel
02-28-2003, 04:56 PM
If you change your displayed name, do you go back to being Newly Deceased? I figured I could ask here, since this is about names. I just looked up what my name means, and it makes no sense. Nuinatariel- "Under of the father maiden". Evil name generator.

Troll
03-01-2003, 01:02 PM
I did choose "Troll" cause my favourtie characters are trolls!!
They are so brutal and good warriors!

Andephelien
03-01-2003, 01:28 PM
If you change your displayed name, do you go back to being Newly Deceased?
I wonder that also. Is there any way you can change it? My name, Andephelien means "Maiden of the Gate" or so. I want to chande it to something else. Andephelien is just what the name generator spit out. (Dumb thing) smilies/mad.gif

Elvish Hermit
03-01-2003, 02:29 PM
I chose my nivkname because ever since I was little, I always felt like an elf. Whether it be some beautiful princess-like one (NOT arwen) or Santa Clause related I alway wanted to be one. And the hermit part was added because I rarely interact with 3D people and I like hermit crabs.

aragornreborn
03-01-2003, 02:30 PM
Well, I admire and identify with Aragorn, in a way, and was trying to think up something Aragorn related that was clever but serious. Then, I stumbled upon aragornreborn. I liked it, so it is. I also admire/identify with Faramir, and in one of my many moments of supreme uncleverness, I entertained the name Faramir_is_here. Yes, yes, I know. Luckily, I stuck with aragornreborn which, to me anyway, is a little better.

Estelyn Telcontar
03-01-2003, 02:35 PM

Durion the Dark
03-07-2003, 04:02 PM
My nickname is pretty straight foreward (although i doubt anyone will even see it buried so far in the back). My first choice was Tanis Half-elven (named after a very popular book series, Dragonlance) But i suppose not enough people would understand that (I love those books so much). So i chose a very new name of mine, Durion the Dark.......Actually Durion was the original name, Taken from a homemade RPG I made up (mostly...). Durion, a cloudy figure, obscure at times, wearing a simple robe cloak combination, And wielding a fearsom halbred/pike....... smilies/evil.gif , the Dark on the other hand is just a signature on the end of my name when I play computer RPGs. Well, I hope you enjoy that, Rate me if YOU, have the time....Durion the Dark

Chancellen the True
03-09-2003, 02:19 AM
I figured that all the names from Tolkien that I liked would allready be taken, since I'm #6000 something; so, I took a name from another source. The name I took is from a Planescape novel. It is one The Nameless One's aliases from a prior life that he read on a wanted poster. Obscure enough for ya.

Adamathamariel
03-09-2003, 07:55 AM
I just changed my name from "Andephelwen", which means long wall (its the one that the BD generator spit out), to my self-fabricated name, Adamathamariel. It is a modified version of Adanethamariel, which means "Maiden Woman of the Earth".

03-10-2003, 07:09 PM
My nick is supposed to be kinda funny and different. I happen to love LOTR esp. hobbits and punk rock so it seemed to fit. And it fits my persona as well. I often like to pretend I am a hobbit. Don't know why but I feel a special connection with them. Sorry if that isn't too interesting.. smilies/tongue.gif

Hirilaelin
03-11-2003, 05:42 PM
I am a swimmer, and love Arthurian legends, so I chose Hirilaelin, Lady of the Lake! But my translated Elvish name is Eruanne, which is kind of frustrating now that I'm registered with 300 something posts. Can't turn back now! But I do like my name, it sounds cool to say, all flowery and flowing.

Rumil
03-11-2003, 08:14 PM
Well,

originally I tried to think of a fairly obscure name from Lord of the Rings, little did I know then that this board reaches such heroic levels of obscurity. (PS that's a compliment by the way) smilies/wink.gif Frankly after I'd haunted the downs for a while I was amazed that nobody else had this nick.

Then I got to thinking, and remembered Rumil the great sage of Kor-Tirion, yeah,a bit presumptuous, but stay with me. I grew up in a house called Coedhirion (which sounds more or less the same, honest). Now, as you linguistic types know, that's Welsh for tall trees, which brings us back to Rumil of Lothlorien, well known for hanging around in the odd mallorn or two.

Gilbo
03-12-2003, 11:08 AM
What nickname?
Back at the dawn of the Fifth Age(circa 1969) my group was in to Tolkien, "Stranger in a Strange Land" and Pipeweed. We started adding BO to our real names, thus Tombo, Timbo, Wesbo, Larbo,Denbo, Gilbo.
Women had -Sholme added to their names, as in Mary-sholme, Janey-sholme, Jeannie-sholme. I don't know why, ask the pipe.
I've used it ever since.

grishgrash the burner
03-28-2003, 03:14 AM
intially, i was going to choose something... elvish. since the eldars were the beautiful and the fair. but then, i thought... maybe not. i thought, o.k. a lot of people will choose something elvish. so, why don't i take something that is the opposite? & i ended up with 'grishgrash the burner'.

I chose Mordor Queen because i love the Shire smilies/evil.gif

Elotareth
03-28-2003, 05:00 PM
I actually had a lot of fun choosing my name! I'm kind of obsessed with Elvish and I really identify with the warrior princess archetype (sorry all you Arwen-dissers!), so I compiled several words (I can't remember whether its in Sindarin or Quenya) to make Elotareth. It basically means "Star Warrior" with the feminine ending "-eth". Anyway, g2g

Lathriel
03-29-2003, 12:34 AM
I made up the name Lathriel it is a character from my first fan fiction.
She is a beautiful maiden and somehow the name Lathriel stuck. Anyway I would post my story on this website if they had room! I will have to check if they made any space sometime soon. I check weekly. smilies/rolleyes.gif

GlingleglingleglingleFairy
03-29-2003, 03:45 AM
Well, long story behind my name. It comes from a Terry Pratchett book, Hogfather. Basically in the book the Hogfather (kind of like Santa) is killed and there's lots of spare belief in the world. Because of this lots of random gnomes/fairies start existing to explain things (the verruca gnome brings verrucas, there's a creature that eats odd socks) and each time someone says, hey, I bet there's a gnome that brings verrucas there is a glingleglingleglingle noise and that creature comes into existance. Finally, some smart person who's wondering where the noise comes from says, I bet there's a fairy with bells making the glingleglingleglingle noise and hey presto, there is. That is me, the Glingleglingleglingle Fairy. smilies/evil.gif smilies/cool.gif

Annalaliath
04-04-2003, 01:08 AM
this is my character name. I would have used Myrddin but that is not Tolkien at all, and there is alot of other reasons. Annalaliath means the gift of laghter , anna meaning gift of and laliath is laughter.

sigrid
04-04-2003, 02:24 AM
Well, Sigrid is my real name. As I happen to live in Northern Europe, my parents just chose an ancient scandinavian (viking) name for me. Sigrid means Shining Victory in english as I recall. I´m quite pealsed with my name, actually, no need for aliases. smilies/smile.gif On the other hand, its not very tolkien-related I quess...

Sillabub
05-17-2003, 11:40 AM
Sillabub actually isn'y from middle earth... she's not even from any of the races mentioned in any of the books. In fact, Sillabub is the name of a Jellicle. Now everyone knows what a jellicle is right?...(who am I kidding?)oh, fine. Jellicles are cats from the musical CATS, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Sillabub is (at least in terms of my name) another name for the kitten Jemima. My current avatar is a picture of Jemima from the movie.

The story behind my name is rather long and complicated. Had I been male rather than female, my father wanted to name me Corwin after a character in one of his favorite books, Nine Princes in Amber. Corwin wore black and silver, including a silver rose. I made Corwin into a female name, Corwyn, which actually has a meaning (Ring Maiden), and translated Silver Rose to Celesil.

Idunn
06-11-2003, 12:17 PM
I'm fond of mythology in general. That's why I chose the name of the Vikings' godess of spring. I simply like how it sounds...I don't especially like the character. In fact, I haven't found much about her in sources available for me.

MYyyPreciousSS
06-14-2003, 12:48 AM
I've always been interested in Gollum, and really Gollum is the reason I became interested in LOTR. I started with just reading the riddles in The Hobbit; which then lead me to read the whole chapter, since I enjoyed the riddles. I liked that chapter so much I read the book, and then it went on from there. So really my LOTR obsession really started with Gollum, and one of the reasons I like Gollum so much was because of him always saying "my preciouss". And so thats where the nickname comes from, the saying that started my interest (plus a couple more Y's.)

Finwe
06-14-2003, 12:48 PM
Initially my nickname to be Aredhel Finuchil, since it is the name of my alter-ego in Middle-earth. She is the daughter of Gil-galad, and the granddaughter of Celegorm (on her mother's side, don't ask).

But on most of the other forums that I'm on, I'm Aredhel, so I decided to change things around a bit, and be the original player, Finwë!

MLD-Grounds-Keeper-Willie
06-14-2003, 04:32 PM
I just realized I never posted here.

I chose MLD-Grounds-Keeper-Willie beccause I figured most people would choose Middle-earth names. That's just fine, but it can be repetative and stale. If you have an odd name like mine, it's sticks out in your mind, and people remember me easier. MLD represents something with me and my friends. It's pretending like we're a gang. We have a rival pretend-gang too. It's actually quite hilarious some times.

I chose Grounds-Keeper-Willie because I love the Simpsons. I believe it is the best show ever. I like so many characters on the show but I can only choose one. I don't really have a favorite, but Willie is sort of representative of myself. He's Scottish, and I'm Irish, the two nationalities are very similar. I admire Willie. He has a low paying job and he is low on the social ladder, yet he holds true to his heritage and struggles to succeed in America. He's obviously an immigrant, and one episode proves it. He sticks up for Uter, who isn't actually an immigrant, he's an exchange student. And there's much much more about him than you might think.

Anyways, that's how I ended up with the name. I shouldn't have put all the hyphens in it. It would look better as MLD-GroundskeeperWillie, but hey, I'm not complaining. smilies/smile.gif smilies/wink.gif smilies/tongue.gif

Mine isn't exactly Tolkien, and I probably couldn't remember it if I had an Elvish name, so I chose this. It's from a Tennyson poem, Maud (see signature), and I thought that phrase was too beautiful to pass up. Also the title of a favorite painting of mine inspired by the same poem.

Phoenix
06-15-2003, 06:18 PM
Well, I picked Phoenix because I took a quiz and it came back that I was a phoenix god, so I use that on a lot of things. If I picked a lotr name though, it would be Nessa. My real name is nessa and Nessa is a goddess in The Silmarillion.

maikafanawen
06-15-2003, 06:48 PM
My nick, Maikafanawen, is my full name (first, middle, and last) translated on the Barrow Downs Name Translater thingy. I was playing around and just liked it so ... I used it on the forum. I looked up its meaning and it translates to be:

Sharp = Maika-
Veil = -fana-
Maiden = -wen

I don't know what that means but its my name. Did anyone else use the translater for their name? Did you translate it into its english meaning? Does yours make sense??

-Maikafanawen

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
06-15-2003, 06:54 PM
I chose Horse-Maiden of the Shire. I chose it because I love horses. They are the most beautiful, noble, and athletic creatures I have ever seen. The other reason I chose it was because I am a hobbit fanatic. Hobbits are my favourite species in the LotR, and I am a hobbit. I even have an excuse. When people say, "No you're not a hobbit! You're too tall!" I say, "I'm related to Bullroarer Took, a.k.a Bandobras, and he was so tall for a hobbit that he could ride a horse." That also fits in nicely with my RPG character, who is also a Took. But she is not abnormally tall.

Dûrlossiel
06-17-2003, 12:45 PM
I chose Dûrlossiel because that's one of the names that the name generator on BD came up with. That and it wasn't chosen by anyone else even though I'm member #7000 and something.

EDIT: #7542 (a lot of something, huh?) smilies/tongue.gif

mallorn
06-17-2003, 07:04 PM
My nick name was given to me, well the one I go by on the forum. I actually have several nick names, but Mallorn was thought by my friend, Taxi (note Taxi is her nick name). We were chosing nicknames for this little anime thingy that has been in works for quite a while. Any ways, she is also a very big LOTR fan. She thought Mallorn would be great, so I am named after the great elven trees of LOTR. The Mallorn trees, but hey it is cool, because Mallorn means glittering gold. So I am quite happy with Mallorn

It fits my personality, fore I am tall and my friends say that there is a flame in my eye, I don't know ask them, they gave it to me. I also go by Narearan-Quenya"Flame-king". That is my AIM name. Hallanare is my most commonly used one.

Olorin
06-21-2003, 09:29 AM
I took Olorin because it's Gandalf's name in Valinor, and Gandalf is my favorite character and Olorin just rolls of your tongue better.

By the way, does anyone know if it's possible for me to have it as Olórin instead of Olorin? I didn't find out there was an accent untill after I joined.

06-21-2003, 09:36 AM
I don't know what that means but its my name. Did anyone else use the translater for their name? Did you translate it into its english meaning? Does yours make sense??

There was a whole topic on this a while ago. Of course the generator isnt real- but it does come up with such pretty names. And some do make sense- mine translated roughly as Blessed Maiden of the Night. Not bad (no one say anything about ladies of the night!). There was another- who I forget- whose name translated as Fading Lady of the Weeping Willow. Beautiful. I would have had that as a PT.

Trippo The Hippo

The reason for my nick is just something my friend and I came up with one day. Trippo also has a brother named Flippo.

Wolvaurynomir
06-24-2003, 11:22 PM
Mine is actually a fangirl's nightmare. "Wolv" comes from "Wolverine" of X-Men fame. "Aur" comes from "Auron" of Final Fantasy X. "Ryn" is, obviously, from my online handle "Rynoah" and I think the "omir" part is pretty self-explanitory. It actually started out as "Wolveryn", evolved to "Wolvauryn" and I finally tacked on an "omir" for spite.

This also explains my signature: "For Gondor and the fallen, bub!"

arianrod
06-27-2003, 01:26 AM
Mine's from Celtic mythology: Arianrod was a goddess who, according to my book at least, was believed by some to be the moon itself. I absolutly love the moon (as you can see if you look at my website), I think it's the most beautiful thing visible from Earth, and love Celtic mythology, so it was a two-birds-with-one-stone kind of thing. And I think the name itself has a nice ring to it; kinda rolls off the tongue.

Feanor of the Peredhil
06-27-2003, 09:48 AM
You could guess the origin of my name, but you'd be wrong, sort of. At the point at which I created it, I hadn't read the Silm yet, so I had no clue as to whom Feanor was. But my name came off a list of Elvish names and meanings:
Fiery Spirit of the Half Elven

Fea

Elennar Starfire
07-03-2003, 11:00 AM
I have a weird but true story to tell...(don't worry, it's short)

Before I learned any elvish I was thinking about how elvish names mean something (Legolas=greenleaf, for example) and I decided I wanted my name to mean starfire. I write fantasy sometimes and have trouble coming up with names for my characters, so whwnever I come up with a good name I write it down so I don't forget. one of the names I had come up with (and my favorite at the time) was Elinar. Then I found out that elen means star and nar means fire, so I put them together to get Elennar=starfire. I was sort of freaked out because I had already come up with Elinar and they're so similar.

Morgul Queen
11-28-2004, 02:40 PM
When I was new to this fandom I fangirlled the Witch-King and one day, while reading the books, I found that he was referred to as the Morgul-Lord, mis-read it as Morgul-King and thought 'A King has to have a Queen...Oooh I could be a Queen!' Hence the name...

I dropped the Queen long ago on the other sites and forums I'm on, but most people refer to me as Morgy now.

Actually, that's an weird one too. One of my mates on another site I'm on, The PPC Board...well, it was chat at the time, goes by the name of Morgoth and used to have the nick-name of 'Morgy'. When I became his minion (It was an all out war against Merry and Pippin and any who brought up the new-found and dreaded pairing of Varda/Morgoth and everyone was claiming minions. Varda was not impressed) he gave me the nick-name of Morgy because he hated it and wanted to torture me for not B-ZIP!-ing the hobbits fast enough.

*grins* Then we started calling him 'Melkie'.

So you really have a variaty of names to call me by. Morgul, Morgy, Morg, 'Hey You!', and 'What on earth do you think you're doing!!!'.

EarthBound
12-02-2004, 12:50 PM
EarthBound has many meanings to me.....I'm a soil scientist and work closely with natural resource conservation . . . very tied to the Earth and all

I've always wanted to travel space (my first movie ever was StarWars at the drive-in Theater in 1977 in the front of my family's yellow Ford pickup...sigh) so with that in mind I heard the song Fly by Pink Floyd and there's the line about being an earth bound missfit....and I went Oh Yeah, That's Me!!

So...I'm tied to the Earth, for good or bad, but I try to save it each day (professionaly) for all of us... :)

haha. Um...I actually picked mine b/c I love elves. However, many of my friends and family are in LOTR and I didn't want them to know that I am, well, myself. So, since I hate being referred to as chick, I figured, "Hey, they'll never guess that." Thus it remains.

Ibrîniðilpathânezel
04-13-2010, 09:14 PM
Reason... do names have a reason...?

Mine came about because I was sick and tired of joining Tolkien-based groups only to have anything vaguely akin to a name I liked long gone. And because on another forum, I had threatened to use Ibrîniðilpathânezel because it was one Tolkien derived name nobody else would use. If they could remember how to spell and type it. (I barely can, and then only in a word processor. Copy and paste, there's my motto. :D)

PrinceOfTheHalflings
04-14-2010, 03:42 AM
I just chose it because it had a nice ring to it, if you know what I mean. Well, that and all the other good names were taken. It's not easy to find to find something from LOTR that hasn't been used.

There's no special significance to it though, I don't have a Pippin fetish. ;)

Blind Guardian

I translated my real name (by looking up the meaning and translating that)into elvish and Mithennor was my favorite name that came of that.

ecthelion
05-09-2010, 08:46 AM
I choose ecthelion because he is my favorite elf and he is a lord of my favorite city GONDOLIN. I am also probably the only person who can say that ecthelion is my favorite elf.

Nogrod
05-09-2010, 09:37 AM
Nice stories!

I just realised I had never posted here (according to the site itself)!

It's quite random actually.

Years ago my daughter (Thinlómien) told me to check this forum and I immediately thought it looked great and I felt I wished to comment on a thread but the forum required creating an account to do that. So as I saw that people seemed to have Tolkien inspired nicks I thought that was the general way of doing it here. I picked my copy of the Silmarillion and started going through the Index to find something that was not too obvious and sounded nice. And then there was Nogrod. I thought immediately that was fine as I kind of like dwarves and it sounded northern/eastern. I could never have thought of taking an elvish or hobbittish nick... or anything from the LotR.

As I started to get around the place I must admit I was a bit frustrated with my nick... I mean after meeting people like littlemanpoet, The Saucepan Man, theguywhobeshort... just great nicks! Why hadn't I thought of something along those lines?

But yes, with years passing I have grown used to Nogrod, it's like a second skin now. :)

skip spence
05-09-2010, 10:54 AM
Skip Spence was a musician who had a brief spell of moderate fame and fortune in the late 60's, as a member of both Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape, two seminal "hippie"-bands from San Francisco. Being something of an acid victim he was incarcerated for trying to attack his manager with a fire-ax and upon his release he cut a solo album, "Oar", before once again disappearing into a fog of mental illness. Many years ago I listened a lot to that album, which is mad but also quite brilliant, and when I was going to register to another forum, completely unrelated to Tolkien, I chose his name as a nick, for no reason other than him being on my mind.

When I first found this site I was in the process of immersing myself in the more nerdy Tolkien materials like HoME, Lost Tales, Unfinished Tales etc, and wanting to comment on a thread I saw, I just used the nick and password from the other forum out of convenience.

So that's that.

Galadriel
05-11-2010, 05:04 AM
Not much of a story, really. I found Galadriel's personality more powerful than any one's in LotR (apart from Gandalf). I didn't like her much initially, but eventually I found a respect for her that was hard to define.

Lastande Took
05-13-2010, 05:46 PM
I got my real name, found a website that translates your name into Quenya, and 'Lastande' was the result. (I hope it has the same meaning as my real name. :) ) 'Took' because I like Hobbits a lot, and the Tooks are, well, Tookish, something I'd like to be. That's how I got my mixture of High-Elven and Hobbit.

@Blind Guardian - Especially their nightfall in middle-earth album, the ultimate(and possibly only) combination of tolkien and metal :)

@Galadriel - Lol what do you mean you will "diminish"? Besides, no going into the west for all of us mortals, "all roads are now bent".

I found feanor to be the deepest and most vivid character, and also one of the most tragic, I constantly found myself empathising and identifying with him. So I chose this, which also happens to fit balrogs nicely, which are also cool. In fact tolkiens whole fea/spirit concept is awesome, was it maedhros who came back from his time at angband and for all his torment his spirit burned brighter than ever?

LadyBrooke
07-23-2010, 11:38 PM
Brooke is my middle name, and on several other sites I'm known as LadyBrookeofLorien so I just dropped the ofLorien part. Plus several of the forum names I chose when I was younger are terribly embarrassing to me know like Council of Elrond one or my Fictionalley one (rowena&salazar4ever):o. Snowdog
09-28-2010, 06:54 AM
Can't remember if I answered this in the last 10 years or not....

I started using this name when I first signed up for an email account back in the early 90's because I was listening to Rush at the time and their song 'By-Tor & the Snowdog' was playing. I then used it on some music bulletin boards, and then used it on EZ Board when I registered, then on a few Tolkien sites I registered for in 2000. On newer Tolkien sites I register for, I started using either an RP character name that I developed during my golden years of RP writing, or one of the Dunedain Chieftain names.

I always liked Galadriel since I first read the books. Cate in the movies kinda messed that up for me for awhile, but she has re-taken her place thanks to a good friend.

Adaneth
09-28-2010, 07:08 PM
Well, my username is probably recognisable as it's from Tolkien's Athrabeth (since the name of Andreth, one of my favourite female characters, was taken, and I wanted a Tolkien-themed name).

If I can recall correctly, I believe it means woman. Which I am. :D

xMellrynxMaidenx
10-12-2010, 12:42 PM
I chose mine because I absolutely love the mallorn trees and Lothlorien in general. It mainly comes from a nickname I gave to an RP character I use, Mallornriel.

:p I told you I love the mallorn trees, not to mention mallorn is a beautiful word. So sue, me I'm a tree hugger, haha. :p

Though, if I could choose to change it I would go with something along the lines of Erestor or Lindir, or something to do with Elladan and Elrohir. Perhaps something to do with Haldir ;) What can I say? I'm a sucker for the less important characters, hehe.

I'm pleased with it.

I didn't think much of Éowyn, actually. I just thought Galadriel was absolutely brilliant ;) I mean, wise, an athlete, intelligent, powerful, masterful and also the daughter of Finarfin. Yep, that's one heck of a woman.

I liked Aredhel too, but not as much as Galadriel.

When I decided on my username, for some reason I completely forgot about the 1st age women. I like Morwen best, even better than Galadriel. But Galadriel would be 2nd place, of course :). 3rd place would probably be Melian. What about you, guys? What nickname would you choose if it wasn't the one you have?
No offence, Galadriel, but I don't think much of Aredhel.

No offence taken :) I rather like Melian myself. You have to see this illustration of her face-palming while Thingol has had Maglor tied to a pillar and Daeron is driving the poor Noldo to madness by singing ;)

I translated my real name (by looking up the meaning and translating that)into elvish and Mithennor was my favorite name that came of that.

If I translated my name, one of the possibilities I'd get would be Arwen, but she annoys me quite a bit, so I chose not to use that name :).

I have numerous nicks I would choose. :p

My name translated into elvish is Eruwaedhiel. I would probably use that or just use plain ol' Lord Elrond. ;) Or I would use something to do with the Rangers, possibly just use Ranger of the North. OR I would use something relating to Elladan and Elrohir. :D Haha, but I like my nick now, Mellryn Maiden.

I just love those trees!

Dilettante

Dilettante is the name, the e at the end is pronounced. I have the worst time spelling Dilettante, so I have to look at it every time I type it.

I have several reasons for choosing this name 1. I wanted something that wasn't the norm, and everything Elvish I liked was already taken. 2. To call someone a dilettante is to say they dabble in something merely for the fun of it. I.e. they aren't professional, they are an amateur. I have about a dozen hobbies and want to know everything about everything. Everything I do (besides my 8-5 job) is for the fun of it, so yes I could classify as a dilettante. 3. In addition to being a huge LOTR fan, I am also a huge Dr. Who fan (Gah! Yes I admit it!) and the Doctor is referred to as 'dilettante' on a couple of occasions. Which is why I initially wanted my name to be Intergalactic Dilettante BUT it would not fit in the box when I was filling out my new member profile. (Don't know why, it just quit filling in letters as I typed.)
