View Full Version : One Thing in Common
Lostgaeriel

In this game, you must identify the one thing in common for the persons (or things or places) in the list. Of course, there may be more than one thing in common and the quizzer may not have thought of all of them. Quizzer's discretion as to whether alternate answer will be accepted.
Let's get started.
What do the following characters have in common?
Pippin
Éowyn
Frodo
Gandalf
Gorbag
Maybe I should rephrase what I meant by "one thing in common". These characters have something in common that is not shared with other characters (from LOTR). It's a "5-man out" question.
(Game idea from CBC Radio show "Definitely Not the Opera". They have a sound clip quiz, where you must identify what all the sounds - music, news soundbites, sound effects, etc. - have in common. Usually something in the news. Maybe this game would work better with 5 quotes - not necessarily dialogue - from the book.)

I dont wanna be anoying but you can figure out millions of things that they have in common.
Take mine here for example.
They can all walk.
Eh?
Sorry...
Lostgaeriel
11-11-2001, 02:18 PM
Well, I was thinking of something significant in the various plotlines of LOTR. ALL of the characters can walk.
But I give that you may be right - this game might not work out. smilies/frown.gif

Lostgaeriel
11-12-2001, 02:26 PM
OK. This is rather tough.
HINT #1
Plot or Action Related. Each of these characters are involved in a similar situation.
Sometimes this plot device is used as a cliff-hanger and sometimes just to add suspense.
The Laurenendorian

Concealed identity?
Turambar
11-13-2001, 12:22 PM
Is it that each of them loses consciousness during a battle ?
Lostgaeriel
11-13-2001, 08:51 PM
I don't recall Pippin or Gorbag having hidden identities. So that's not it.
Turambar has almost got what I have in mind. It's not the unconsciousness of the characters. And I'm not sure that Gorbag did pass out. And other characters did lose consciousness . Merry, Faramir? By considering Hint #1 re: suspense, cliff-hanger, you should get it.
HINT #2: It has to do with how certain other characters and/or the reader view(s) these characters in those "battle situations". Whether it's for an instant or for many days/pages.

HINT #3:
A. Faramir almost fits into this list.
B. See the post by Amarylis, November 13 in The Books II, Favourite Part? Favourite Book?
C. “The report of my death was an exaggeration.” - Samuel L. Clemens

They were all presumed dead at some time or another:
Pippin at Morannon
Frodo at Kirith Ungol + in The Chamber of Mazabul

Yes! Telchar got it. They were all presumed dead at some point in the story. Faramir was only presumed to be dying and better off dead by Denethor.

Ecthelion of Gondolin, Ecthelions of Gondor... they're almost the same, when it comes to this list - but it'll help you find the right answer if you'll think of the Ecthelions of Gondor.
I meant Anarion son of Isildur, but there most probably is a connection to Tar-Anarion, the eighth king of Numenor as well.
Cirdan the Shipwright
01-10-2002, 12:50 PM
Okay, I have a zillion possibilities, except Brandir keeps getting in the way.
They all ruled Minas Anor / Minas Tirith for a time?
Each had one (surviving) son?
Each was slain treacherously?

I’m going AWOL and I don’t want to kill this thread so I’ll give the answer. Galadriel, Aragorn and Gandalf all passed through Moria prior to the War of the Ring. Celeborn likely didn’t because he had a grudge against dwarfs as a result of the killing of his kinsman Thingol and the sacking of Menegroth
Telchar
02-06-2002, 02:49 AM
That was a good question - I had totally forgotten that Galadriel travelled through Moria.
Just to Add: Im pretty sure that Aragorn never went 'through' Moria - He stated himself that he had only passed through the Dimrill Gate, which doesn't mean that he came out of the West Gate, but more likely that he passed out through the Dimrill Gate again when he had finished his business.

Hmm...they all were in some way involved with evil. Or a Dark Lord. Beren got a Silmaril from a Dark Lord (Morgoth) Maedhros was trapped on the peak of Thangorodrim because of the Dark Lord (Morgoth, yet again) Sauron made an evil ring and was a Dark Lord, and Frodo got a ring from a Dark Lord (Sauron). So everyone was in some way connected to the "Dark side". Am I right???

No, but I'm not too sure if Elrond is supposed to be in there. I'll check and take him out if needed.

Ok, never mind, Elrond is included. His brother, Elros mgiht be added, if that helps any.

Frodo
Tuor
Elrond
Eowyn
Well, they all contributed to the ending of an age in a significant way...I guess. Frodo, well, need I say anything? Eowyn with the Witch King, Elrond....um well he..yeah, and Tuor..oh wait! They all met with a Valar, no what about Eowyn then. Ok, I'll think about this and post later..

What do they have in common?
Lindolirian

They were all captives.
Thorin- Elven King
Hurin- Morgoth

Lothiriel Silmarien
08-01-2002, 09:42 PM
They all went/were from Angbad. Luthien went with Beren, Hour was captured there, Gothmog came from there, but then Eol. Hm. Ok, can't be it. It could be that they were cast from a crevice, but that leaves Luthien and Huor out. Damn it! Stupid answers. Oh wait, I have Gothmog all wrong! Oopsy, he's not the balrog I was thinking about.
Ok, so it's:
Luthien
Huor
Eol
Gothmog
They all must have met Sauron?? Well, Huor was captured by Morgoth, he was in Angbad, Sauron must have passed by a few times on his way in and out to see his master, Luthien saw him, Eol...hm. Damn, can't find an answer for that. EEEEOL...ok, I'm trying later, PLEASE let no one get it, I want to get it!!!!!

Oh wait! There's 2 Gothmogs. A balrog and a Leiutenant of Morgul. Assuming you mean the balrog (as all the rest are from the Sillmarillion) then I'll give this another try. I wasn't giving it all my attention yesterday.
Oh well, too late. It looks like Telchar got it.

Firstly, would that be Earendil the Mariner or Earendil of Gondor? Well, Earendil of Gondor didn't do much. So I'll go with Earendil the Mariner.
They all killed a dragon, except Earendil. But they all saved people. Earendil saved Middle-Earth by going to Aman, Bard saved Laketown, well most of it, Turin saved...people. Well, he killed the dragon, which could have killed many more people. And Fram killed Scatha. I think it was Scatha.

All of them have a thing in common that they had out of their possesion, at least for awhile. Some with their permission some without their permission. The people can be grouped as follows...
Beorn
Sam
Eomer
Merry
Theoden (at first)

Eomer-lent Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas
Beorn-lent Gandalf and dwarves and Bilbo
Sam-let Bill the pony go at the mines of Moria
Merry-had horses stolen at the Prancing Pony
Theoden-(at first) Gandalf takes Shadowfax then Theoden gives Shadowfax to him freely.
Like I said, not sure if this was incredibly hard or incredibaly lame.

Luthien Aragorn Gil-Galad The Ring Elbereth Snowmane Frodo
[ November 03, 2002: Message edited by: Nevtalathiel ]
Lostgaeriel
11-04-2002, 09:11 PM
There is a song or verse about each of these persons, beasts or things in The Lord of the Rings.
Song of Beren and Luthien
Riddle of Strider (Aragorn)
The Fall of Gil-Galad
Verse of the Ring(s)
Elven hymns to Elbereth Gilthoniel
Snowmane's Epitaph
Frodo of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom (which isn't actually written out in the book)
The problem with this answer is that there were also songs or verses about other persons, beasts, monsters and things in tLotR, so the list could be continued to include Earendil, Durin, Nimrodel, Goldberry, etc. So I'm pretty sure I have the wrong answer.
Nevtalathiel
11-05-2002, 11:37 AM

There is something in common linked to each of these clues. If I give you a straight list you'll have it in an instant. Even so...
My info is according to tLotR only.
one of the Three
the guards of the Court of the Fountain
Speak, friend and enter.
The days now are short. Either our hope cometh, or all hopes end. Therefore I send thee what I have made for thee.
'In his time the City was made more fair than it had ever been, even in the days of its first glory; and it was filled with trees and with fountains, and its gates ...'
'Here's a pretty hobbit-skin to wrap an elven-princeling in.'
ElentariGreenleaf
11-09-2002, 07:32 AM
All said by Gandalf? (I just wanna know if I'm right or not. I wouldn't be able to think up one of these!) smilies/tongue.gif
Lostgaeriel
11-09-2002, 09:38 AM
No-o.
First of all, not all of the items in the list are quotes. They are just clues (riddles sorta) that will give you a list of 'Things' (not 'Persons, Beasts and Monsters' or 'Places').
If I actually named the Things, I think you would have the answer immediately. All are Things from The Lord of the Rings. And they have one Thing in common.
I think I should edit the list slightly:
one of the Three
the livery of the guards of the Court of the Fountain
Speak, friend and enter. The days now are short. Either our hope cometh, or all hopes end. Therefore I send thee what I have made for thee.
"In his time the City was made more fair than it had ever been, even in the days of its first glory; and it was filled with trees and with fountains, and its gates were ------- -- ------- ..."
'Here's a pretty hobbit-skin to wrap an elven-princeling in.'

Lostgaeriel
11-09-2002, 11:08 PM
Yes, Lindolirian, you got it. Each item was made of mithril (true-silver) or made with ithildin (which is made from mithril).
The Guard of the Citadel at the Court of the Fountain (and only there) wore helms made of mithril. Their surcoats may have been embroidered in true-silver - the text isn't specific in that.
The emblems and letters on Durin's Doors were made using ithildin or starmoon.
The new gates of the City were made of mithril and steel.
As far as I can find, the only other sure mention of mithril in the book is in Bilbo's Song of Earendil.
Well done. Go ahead.

Do you mean Ar-Pharazon the Golden?
if so, they all were leaders in oppositions against Sauron.
Arathorn- Captain of the Northern Dunedain.
Boromir- Son of the Steward of Gondor.
Ar-Pharazon- King of Numenor, attacked and took Sauron prisoner.
Elrond- leader in the Last Alliance, and in the War of the Ring.
but then something truly easy would be that they are all offspring of Earendil.
