Thank's
Whats the name of Helm Hammerhand's sister?
Hiriel
09-22-2005, 06:34 PM
Herm, that would be Hild.
Rune Son of Bjarne
09-22-2005, 06:39 PM
Yes it is.
Too easy ?
well the thread is all yours.
Hiriel
09-29-2005, 05:36 PM
Nah, it was hard. I just love the Rohirrim, though. Speaking of,
Who, besides Eorl and Cirion, were present at the swearing of the oath of Eorl?
Rune Son of Bjarne
10-08-2005, 05:38 PM
I cannot find a place where they mention them by name, but was the Prince of Dol Amroth there ?
Hiriel
10-09-2005, 04:19 PM
I'll take that, Rune. :) It's mentioned in Unfinished Tales that Hallas son of Cirion, the prince of Dol Amroth and two other of the stewards council went up with Eorl and his chief captains to Amon Anwar, to hear the swearing of the oath.
Rune Son of Bjarne
10-09-2005, 05:06 PM
I must have missed it somehow!
Witch king of Rohan dwelled in Gondor from his coming of age, to the begining of his kingship ?
Hiriel
10-10-2005, 12:28 PM
I think that would be Theoden.
Rune Son of Bjarne
10-10-2005, 12:39 PM
Not the answer I was looking for!
You are close Hiriel, Theoden was born in Gondor.
P.S. you and me Hiriel together we will restore the quiz-room to its former glory !
What do you say?
arcticstorm
10-10-2005, 08:57 PM
I think it was Thengal
Rune Son of Bjarne
10-11-2005, 05:04 AM
Correct, Thengel it was. (Theodens father)
You go on arcitcstorm!

Did Boromir ever become steward of Godor? explain your answer.
Rune Son of Bjarne
10-13-2005, 11:26 AM
Well no.
The steward is a "replacement for the king, Since the middle years of the 3. age the Stewardship became hereditary. Therfor Boromir could not become a steward before Denethor died, sice Boromir died before Denethor he could not become a steward.
He was how ever captain of Gondor
(I have a wierd feeling that steward of Gondor has a nother meaning too! Otherwise it seems to obvios) :p
arcticstorm
10-13-2005, 11:32 AM
nope
Hiriel
10-13-2005, 12:35 PM
Well, a Boromir became the 11th steward of Gondor, if that's what you're looking for. The Boromir who traveled with the fellowship is named for him. But, I'm more inclined to think that the second Boromir is the Boromir. ;)
arcticstorm
10-13-2005, 12:49 PM
YOu are right Hirel with the 11th steward of Gondor, that's what I was looking for

Say how each of the Rows of the Rohirrim Royalty ended
Telchar
10-19-2005, 08:13 AM
1st line ends with the death of Helm Hammerhand and his two sons in battle with the dunledings, and is followed by Helms sister son Frealaf.
2nd line ends with the death of Theoden and previous death of Theodens only son Theodred at the Battles of the fords of Isen, and is followd by Theodens sister son Eomer.

Ethraid Engrin.
Rune Son of Bjarne

12-07-2007, 07:41 AM
Who was in the position of power in Gondor by the time the last ship left the ancient elven port in Belfalas?
Nerwen
12-07-2007, 08:05 AM
Aragorn (as Elessar).
Legate of Amon Lanc
12-07-2007, 08:09 AM
I thought this could be one of the possible traps one can fall into. Not a correct answer.
Nerwen
12-07-2007, 08:15 AM
In that case I suppose you mean Eldarion.
Legate of Amon Lanc
12-07-2007, 08:29 AM
Nay. Still the same trap :)
The Might
12-07-2007, 08:52 AM
I believe the trap is about the boat of Legolas and Gimli, who did not set sail from Edhellond, but instead sailed down the Anduin and then over the Sea.
According to the story of Amroth the last ship left in autumn of 1981, and in that time King of Gondor was Eärnil II.
Legate of Amon Lanc
12-07-2007, 08:54 AM
Absolutely and totally correct, even the explanation of Legolas' and Gimli's fate as bonus. :)
TM, you may continue.
Shards of Narsil
12-07-2007, 08:59 AM
The last ship left the Elf haven of Edhellond in 1981 of the third age with Amroth aboard. He jumped overboard... and we know the rest of the story.
During this time, Earnil II was king in Gondor.

I've been posting to much anyway, so Shards of Narsil, post a new one if you wish. :)

Thanks Might. It looks as if we were typing our response at the same time. I'm just a little slow this morning.
Any way, here is my post.
We all know that Cirion and Eorl met at the site of Elendil's tomb and there Cirion gave Calenardon to the Rohirrim and together they took the Oath of Eorl. What did Cirion do at that time that was not done at any other time during the entire Third Age?

Legate, what are you?
Good question... but I am not going to tell you... mwa ha ha... :D
But you'll have chance to post something else if your reply to this:
Whose reign was not much appreciated, and his son left the country as soon as he reached maturity?
Shards of Narsil
12-07-2007, 01:46 PM
I believe that would be Fengel. It was his son Thengel who left to live in Gondor due to a disagreement with his father.

12-07-2007, 02:10 PM
Correct! Your turn.
Shards of Narsil
12-12-2007, 08:57 AM
Sorry for the delay. I was away for the weekend, and then couln't come up with much worth putting in. Even now, this one should be pretty easy.
The Argonath marked the northern border of Gondor (at the time of their construction). Each statue had the left hand held palm outward in a "stop, don't go any further" motion.
Who did each statue represent, and what did the right hand of each statue hold?
The Might
12-12-2007, 09:03 AM
I believe they represented Isildur and Anarion andthey both held axes in their hands.
Shards of Narsil
12-12-2007, 12:25 PM
Yup. That was easy.
The Might
12-12-2007, 12:51 PM

Legate of Amon Lanc
12-12-2007, 05:58 PM
The beginning of the attacks of the Easterlings in early 3rd age caused the Gondorians to do one particular thing that did not have anything to do with military or strategy. What was it?
The Might
12-13-2007, 08:10 AM
I think they began the tradition of leaving written instructions to be used by the King's heir in case of the King's untimely death.

Okay...
Who were the two Kings of Gondor, who could be given the titles "Kings of the Hill", based on a certain military experience they both shared?
The Might
03-27-2008, 02:17 PM
I guess first would be Aragorn II since he did get his troops on a hill before the Black Gate...
The second one however... eludes me for now.
Legate of Amon Lanc
03-27-2008, 02:23 PM
Mwahaha, try to think then.

...I mean, your turn, of course :D

... I couldn't stop myself, Chancellor...
Talking of Ondoher– after he was slain on that very knoll, who took command of his forces?
Legate of Amon Lanc
03-28-2008, 08:44 AM
Minohtar, who was his nephew; although he also didn't last long.

Yes. Your turn.
Legate of Amon Lanc
03-29-2008, 05:08 AM
Looks like we have either several minutes or half-days between the posts... :)
Okay, a thing that touches the matter, although just on the edge, but it does:
What was the best and fastest way from the Southern to the Northern Kingdom (while Arnor still existed)?
Nerwen
03-29-2008, 06:13 AM
The North-South Road.
Legate of Amon Lanc
03-29-2008, 06:17 AM
*beep* Wrong. :p
The Might
03-29-2008, 06:54 PM
The road chose by Isildur, north next to the Vales of the Anduin, then crossing the High Pass.
It was a long journey, but the only other way, west and then north to the road-meeting in Arnor, and then east to Imladris, was far longer. 6 As swift, maybe, for mounted men, but he had no horses fit for riding; 7 safer, maybe, in former days, but Sauron was vanquished, and the people of Vales had been his allies in victory. He had no fear, save for weather and weariness, but these men must endure whom need sends far abroad in Middle-earth. 8
Also check the notes for exact descriptions of the distance that would have been saved.
Legate of Amon Lanc
03-30-2008, 05:09 AM
Very nice work, Miggy. But I have a little surprise for you: there was still one overall better and faster way which was used :smokin:
Nerwen
03-30-2008, 05:11 AM
Gondor Airlines?
Thinlómien
03-31-2008, 02:35 AM
Nerwen - :D.
I was thinking about this earlier, but as I had nothing concrete to back up my guess and very little knowledge on it overall and because I did not think it's the correct answer I did not say it. But now that both Nerwen and Might have been wrong I fail to see any of other options (except for something about as silly as what Nerwen just suggested ;)), so possibly, would the fastest route have been by the sea from some Gondorian port to Grey Havens?
Legate of Amon Lanc
03-31-2008, 05:39 AM
Mwahahahaha, both wrong! And even if the Gondorian Airlines existed, we are told that what the fastest route was, and Gondorian Airlines are not mentioned!
*claps hands*
So what now, eh? You all must really be puzzled :D (and I can give you a hint: it was not an underground network, either)
Rune Son of Bjarne
03-31-2008, 06:16 AM
Actually that is a rather poor hint. . .it excludes a few places and clearly our problem is to come up with possible solutions. The next hint really should be one that hints to what the answer might be, instead of what it is not. :smokin:
(just a bit irritated because all that I thought of when reading the question all got eliminated as solutions as I read the thread.)
Legate of Amon Lanc
03-31-2008, 06:20 AM
It was not actually supposed to be a hint ;) I am not giving you any hint until you are all really desperate (to which you may be close to, but not enough yet :d ), because seriously, there indeed are not many options - obviously a route via Dagorlad to Erebor and through the land of Forodwaith coming to Arnor from Angmar would be no doubt interesting for an army trying to surprise an enemy, but not as favourable for common use, trade etc. :)
The Might
03-31-2008, 07:48 AM
What about Moria?
If, then it must be mentioned somewhere in FotR, I am now however not in the mood to look it up.
Actually strange I did not think of it before... also looking on the map Moria seems to save time.
Gordis
03-31-2008, 07:56 AM
What was the best and fastest way from the Southern to the Northern Kingdom (while Arnor still existed)?
By sea from Pelargir to the mouth of Gwathlo, then up the river to Tharbad and then by land (following the road later called the Greenway) via Bree to Fornost?
Legate of Amon Lanc
03-31-2008, 09:27 AM
Very good, Gordis! You are correct.
It was indeed this route. For reference, look into the Unfinished Tales, I can't look it up now, but in the passage about the port of Lond Daer, this route is said to be the most used and the fastest way possible from Gondor to Arnor; even from Minas Tirith, seemingly. It looks very interesting, and this is why I picked it, but it is said to be like that.
Gordis, please give us a new question.
Gordis
03-31-2008, 12:33 PM
Thank you, Legate.:)
OK. New question:
What answer did Déor, the King of Rohan, get from Isengard when he sent messengers to its gates - and who gave this answer?
Nerwen
03-31-2008, 07:38 PM
His messengers were shot at by the Dunlendings and treacherous guards who had seized Isengard.
Gordis
04-01-2008, 07:39 AM
Absolutely correct, Nerwen!
Your turn.

Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth.

That is actually correct. . .but I made a mistake:(
what I should have wrote was:
"give me the name and title of the person that took command of Minas Tirith after the army departed for the black gate"
So if you want the thread you can have it, but you can also chose be kind to me and answer this question as well.

Since Nerwen seems to have been rather inactive here lately, do I get the thread if I answer your latter question? ;) The correct answer would be Húrin, Warden of the Keys.

Which king of Rohan was killed by a wild boar?

I remember that story and like it a lot. But I can't remember the name. Leof or something.

Sorry if I seem ignorant (I just can't remember), but are we allowed to look these things up in books for the purpose of answering?

Sorry if I seem ignorant (I just can't remember), but are we allowed to look these things up in books for the purpose of answering?Actually, I do not know if there is any rule about that (the rules of Quiz Room do not state anything about it, I checked), nor do I actually know whether my fellow members do that. However, I consider it a little unethical and never do it - except that if I need to remember the English name of something I only remember it in Finnish, or sometimes if I'm a bit unsure of my guess and I can check it without spoiling myself with the real answer. (Like, if the question was "Who ate a nice cake?" and I would think that Frodo did so in Rivendell, I might check the Rivendell scene if it's there, but if the question is for example "Which important thing happened in T.A. 2056?" and I think maybe some Orcs attacked Gondor, I do not check it because if I looked at the Tale of Years, I'd see the correct answer automatically.) But I guess you must develop a policy that fits with what you yourself think is right - as long as there's no official ruling about it, everything is accepted. :)

"unethical"
Quite dramatic to call it unethical. . .
It is up to you what you dio, but remember it should be fun for everybody.
I do think it is alright to look in the books, but it depends on the situation and I don't have a general rule about it. Well, I do have one rule and that is that I never use the encyclopedia of Arda to anything else than to come up with a question.

Are you sure you did not mean wuestions? ;) :p
Okay, but as the history of Rohirrim is not exactly my specialisation... but now... hm... wait... I think I am starting to remember whom it concerned...
Okay, in that case, let me think ;) *walks away, muttering 'just what the heck that guy's name was?'*

Oh, I know this one,:D is it Folca? I know that he refused to kill a living beast until he slew all the orcs in Rohan, once that was completed he went on a boar hunt and died of wounds that the boar dealt to him. Is this what you were thinking of, Lommy?

Groin - you're correct (and nice :D) please take the thread.
Legate - you're nasssty. :p But I admit that was a rather original typo... :D

Thanks Lommy. Let's see if I can come up with a hard one.:)
What was the home of Eomer at the time of the War of the Ring?
Gollum the Great

I was about to say: "he didn't have one", thinking that he'd been banished, but I remembered that was only in the movie. However considering he went to so many places during the War I'll go with: the prison. I think Theoden had him dumped in there for a while.

I'd say Aldburg in the Folde, that was the ancestral home of his family.
