Frodo (who dreamt of Gandalf on top of Orthanc and his future voyage over the sea) and Faramir (who was dreaming of the destruction of Numenor, and had the dream with the riddle: "Seek for the Sword that was broken...').
Fingolfin II

Alright, in what context and in what chapter (of LOTR) is the first reference to pipeweed (not smoking) made?
Evisse the Blue
02-12-2005, 02:25 PM
In the prologue, part two (Concerning Pipe-weed), in reference to their hobbit customs.
Or maybe you meant actual chapter and not prologue?
Sophia the Thunder Mistress
02-12-2005, 10:29 PM
I did mean actual chapter. 'Twould be too easy if we were including the prologue.
Happy hunting. :smokin:

02-13-2005, 07:31 AM
That was a cool question. :D
Let's see now if I got it right:
In The Ring goes South, when Sam is going over in his mind what he has packed.

Ah, where these questions go awry is when you find an earlier reference than I did. ;)
I checked it, and I think the thread is yours Evisse.

Here follows a less clever question. ;)
Who of the fellowship journeyed the longest distance during the Quest? (to make it clearer: taking into account only the Great Years 3018, 3019, 3020)?
Lostgaeriel
03-11-2005, 12:52 PM
Now I'm just guessing here, but I think it would be Gandalf - but you must consider the Quest beginning with when Gandalf advised Frodo to leave the Shire with the Ring. And I hope you don't mean under their own power (walking)?
I'm at work and sans mon livre.
So his journey is:
From Bag End to Isengard,
from Isengard to Rivendell,
from Rivendell to Lorien,
from Lorien to (some believe to Amon Hen, but I don't) Fangorn,
from Fangorn to Edoras,
from Edoras to Helm's Deep,
from Helm's Deep to Fangorn? (the movie is getting me confused),
from Fangorn back to Helm's Deep,
from Helm's Deep to Isengard,
from Isengard to Minas Tirith with a stopover somewhere in Rohan,
from Minas Tirith thru Ithilien to the Morannon,
from the Morannon to Mount Doom,
from Mount Doom to Ithilien,
from Ithilien to Cormallen, Minas Tirith, etc.
from Minas Tirith to the Gap of Rohan and on to the Tom Bombadil's,
from Tom's to Rivendell?
from Rivendell to the Grey Havens - NOPE that's after 3020 - never mind.
Evisse the Blue
03-11-2005, 03:20 PM
Yes, you are correct! At least this is my conclusion too. So unless someone decides to challenge that, the thread is yours, Lostgaeriel :)
Lostgaeriel
03-12-2005, 06:08 AM
I sure hope I'm not repeating a question on this thread.
I just let my book open to a page at random and amazingly there was a statement that fits under the 'rules' of this game:
Who had the longest reign of all the Kings of Gondor? (And for a bonus, what was the wisest thing he did? Just give your opinion - there's nothing definitive - I'm sure we'll agree.)
Celebriel Esgaledhel
03-12-2005, 09:08 PM
I believe it was Hyarmendacil I, who reorganized Gondor's armies, openly declared war on the Haradrim, and defeated them. This is when he took on the name Hyarmendacil, meaning "south-voctor'. He reigned for 134 years.
Lostgaeriel
03-14-2005, 12:13 AM
Sorry, Celebriel Esgaledhel, that's not correct. There was a King of Gondor who reigned longer than 134 years.
Here's the question again:
Who had the longest reign of all the Kings of Gondor?
Bonus question:
In your opinion, what was the wisest thing he did?
Nilpaurion Felagund
03-17-2005, 04:39 AM
It was Tarondor, and he reigned for 162 years.
The smartest thing he did? Moving the King's House from Osgiliath to Minas Anor.
Lostgaeriel
03-17-2005, 04:32 PM
Hi Nilpaurion Felagund!
Yes it was Tarondor, the twenty-seventh King of Gondor and nephew of King Telemnar, who had lost all his children in the Great Plague.
Personally, I thought the smartest thing he did was to plant a seedling of the White Tree of Gondor - but I guess I'm rating symbolism over practical living concerns.
Your turn.
Nilpaurion Felagund
03-17-2005, 10:15 PM
Well, the transfer thing was symbolism-laden, too. It meant "I don't want to live too near that place." *points to East* ;)
Enedwaith, which creature has the longest sight range?
The Elf-warrior
04-09-2005, 08:08 PM
Eagles?
Nilpaurion Felagund
04-10-2005, 05:42 AM
This tidbit is found in UT.
Evisse the Blue
05-03-2005, 06:00 AM
Well, assuming Manwë is a creature ( ;) ), that would be him when he sits on Taniquetil with Varda at his side.
Nilpaurion Felagund
05-10-2005, 11:00 PM
It's a beast, a cunning one at that.
Nilpaurion Felagund
08-24-2005, 09:14 PM
Anyone?
Lostgaeriel
08-25-2005, 12:35 AM
I believe that the creature having the longest sight range is Glaurung, the first of the Dragons of Morgoth.
But Glaurung lay there, just within the shadow of the great passage that led inward from the ruined Doors, and he had long been aware of the spies, though few other eyes in Middle-earth would have discerned them. But the glance of his fell eyes was keener than that of eagles, and outreached the far sight of the Elves; and indeed he knew also that some remained behind and sat upon the bare top of Amon Ethir. - UT, II Narn I Hîn Húrin, The Journey of Morwen and Nienor to Nargothrond
I don't know if this quote is definitive, but eyesight better than eagles & Eves is something special indeed.

Who was the proudest and most self-willed of the Eldar?
arcticstorm
08-30-2005, 11:14 AM
who is Feanor
Lostgaeriel
09-01-2005, 05:57 PM
Umm...arcticstorm...uh...this isn't Jeopardy! Your answer should be in the form of an answer, not in the form of a question (although, you neglected to include a question mark).
Yes, Fëanor is the correct ANSWER according to The Lord of the Rings, Appendix A Annals of the Kings and Rulers, I The Numenorean Kings, (i) Númenor:
Fëanor was the greatest of the Eldar in arts and lore, but also the proudest and most self-willed.
Fëanor is just the most.
Your turn arcticstorm - time to ask a QUESTION! :D

09-04-2005, 08:43 PM
Beren? or maybe it was Hurin...
Nilpaurion Felagund
09-04-2005, 08:53 PM

Your turn. :)

 :( Crush my dreams before they even start. I was hoping at least one person would guess Finwe, they I could say they were wrong and flaunt my signature! But you, Gil-Galad, are correct. I'm not counting accents (unless Telchar was going to post before Gil-Galad, but Gil got there first)
Gil-Galad
09-27-2005, 05:33 PM

The Perky Ent
09-27-2005, 07:10 PM
Tarostar?
I want to say Ostoher, but he fought wild men from the east, and I think Tarostar is the first to have it actually be called Easterlings.
Rune Son of Bjarne
09-27-2005, 07:31 PM
Okey okey, you win.
Your right about it saying wild men from east, but i have been reading in a danish version and i thought it was bad translating.

The Perky Ent
10-01-2005, 05:51 PM

Nilpaurion Felagund
12-05-2005, 01:59 AM
Tarannon Falastur -> Eärnil I
Narmacil I -> Calmacil
Telemnar -> Minastin
Valacar -> Castamir

Gil-Galad
12-06-2005, 08:03 AM
