Pallando B.C
10-31-2002, 02:43 AM
That is just a name i picked ( Pallando, Alatar- Blue Wizards!) anyway you were correct.

Lindolirian
11-01-2002, 07:35 PM
Thats what I figured. Who counsellesd Ecthelion that the strength of the rebels of Umbar was a great peril to Gondor? Give all of his nams... just to make it tricky smilies/biggrin.gif

Pallando B.C
11-01-2002, 10:10 PM
This was a hard question so if one of these answers are correct, you must give it to me.
A: Namarie, Elladan, Malbeth the Seer

Lindolirian
11-03-2002, 08:29 PM
None of the above. smilies/smile.gif

Telchar
11-04-2002, 02:31 AM
I give a few... Thorongil, Strider, Elfstone, Elessar Aragorn Telcontar, Dunadan.

Lindolirian
11-04-2002, 08:06 PM
Good job, as usual Telchar!

Pallando B.C
11-20-2002, 02:02 AM
Estel ('hope') could also be added to that.

Pallando B.C
11-21-2002, 03:11 AM
I'm not sure if im allowed to continue the thread because I only gave some of the answer, but this topic is on the verge of extinction so......

Q: How many years was Elros NOT king of Numenor?

lathspell
11-21-2002, 04:06 AM
The Downfall of Numenor was in 3319 SA.
The Edain reached Numenor in 32 SA
Elros Tar-Minyatur died in 442 SA

this makes that he was NOT king of Numenor for 2909 years.

greetings,
lathspell

Pallando B.C
11-21-2002, 04:16 AM
That's correct, but i probably shoud have narrowed down the question. I meant in his lifetime.

lathspell
11-21-2002, 11:39 AM
who were considered greatest of the Maiar?

Pallando B.C
11-21-2002, 07:21 PM
If you mean greatest ( as in more that one) there are many candidates:
Sauron-Curumo-Osse-Olorin-Melian.

But the one who was the greatest ( in my opinon ) would have to be Sauron.

lathspell
11-22-2002, 03:39 PM
I did mean it like I was asking a opinion, Pallando B.C.
I meant: 'who were greatest considered greatest of the Maiar according to the Elves (and maybe the Ainur).

lathspell
11-22-2002, 03:40 PM
- greatest

Pallando B.C
11-24-2002, 10:47 PM
Oh, sorry about that.
Ok it was Ilmare, handmaiden of Varda and Eonwe, herald of Manwe. The were considered the greatest ( or at least the chiefs) of the Maiar by the Eldar. smilies/cool.gif

lathspell
11-25-2002, 04:17 AM
That was what I meant indeed!

Good job and please continue.

Pallando B.C
11-26-2002, 03:32 AM
What does the name of Gil-galad's spear mean?

tom bombariffic
11-26-2002, 10:19 AM
The name of Gil-galad's sword, aeglos, means "snow-point"

Pallando B.C
11-27-2002, 02:58 AM
Correct, but you said sword and Gil-galad had a spear. Anyway you can continue.

Pallando B.C

* Pallando strokes his beard *

Why thank you Beren!

Here is one: What was the name of the song Turin made for Strongbow

lathspell
12-18-2002, 09:36 AM
that would be 'Laer cu Beleg', which he made at the lakeside of Ivrin.

When Morgoth was cast into Void, he got a collar on his neck. What was that color made of?

Pallando B.C
12-18-2002, 03:42 PM
Yes

Beren87
12-18-2002, 09:17 PM
The collar was his Iron crown beat around his neck.

And remember to wait for confirmation to see if you are correct before asking another question.

Pallando B.C
12-19-2002, 02:26 AM
Quite Right, Beren87

Beren87
12-19-2002, 04:13 PM
ALlritey then,
Who was the third son of Feanor?

Pallando B.C
12-19-2002, 04:15 PM
That would be Celegorm the Fair

Beren87
12-20-2002, 01:43 PM
And that is correct.

Pallando B.C
12-20-2002, 04:44 PM
Who escaped with Gil-galad after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad to the Isle of Balar?

lathspell
12-21-2002, 10:28 AM
And that would be Cirdan and the remnant of his people.

greetings,
lathspell

P.S.: if this is correct, this will be the new question: what did Felagund and Beren do wrong that made Sauron sent to waylay them.

Pallando B.C
12-21-2002, 06:43 PM
Once again lathspell, you should wait for verification....lucky you're right.

In answer to your question, I think Felagund and Beren disguised themselves as Orcs, in order to pass between Ered Wethrin.

Sauron doubted who they were, since they went with haste and didn't reported there deeds, as was commanded by Morgoth, for anyone who passed that way. So he sent to waylay them.

My apologies, Pallando B.C. and Beren87! I did not read Beren87's message until today, for I was away for some time and in haste when I returned to this Quiz. But I have read it now, so I shall wait for verification the next time.
My motto shall now be: Do not be hasty smilies/smile.gif

Your answer is quite correct, good Ithron Luin.

Pallando B.C
12-22-2002, 06:48 AM
Ithron Luin.

I'm sorry, What does that mean, I don't speak Elvish and I never heard of that term before.

Anyway a cryptic one, What "Laughter" ceased in Childhood.

lathspell
12-22-2002, 09:19 AM
Ithron is Wizard. The Sindarin words for the Blue Wizards is 'Ithryn Luin'. Though, if I'm correct smilies/wink.gif, you are just one person it becomes Blue Wizard and therefore 'Ithron Luin'.

And now for the answer to your question.
That would be Lalaith, daughter of Hurin and Morwen and sister of Turin, who died when the Evil Breath came to Dor-lomin.

Pallando B.C
12-22-2002, 06:36 PM
Very good lathspell, I thought I may have got you on that one!

And Thanks for the new words!

lathspell
12-24-2002, 10:53 AM
Thank you, Pallando.

Here's the new question:
What was the second name of Holman, who was the gardener of Bilbo and to whom Hamfast Gamgee, Sam's father, was apprenticed?

greetings,
lathspell

Beren87
12-24-2002, 12:48 PM
Ermm.., Im not sure what you want. Is Holman Greenhand the answer your looking for?

lathspell
12-25-2002, 08:00 AM
yes, it is Beren87. Greenhand was the answer I was looking for.

Please continue.
greetings,

Beren87
12-25-2002, 10:57 AM
Who was the "all father"?

lathspell
12-25-2002, 01:45 PM
I think 'Eru Iluvatar' is most likely to get that title.

Beren87
12-25-2002, 03:28 PM
That is the "translation" of Illuvatar, yes, so it is your turn.

lathspell
12-26-2002, 06:24 AM
alrighty then, here's the new one.

What's the translation of 'Gandalf'?

lathspell
12-26-2002, 02:32 PM

Pallando B.C
12-29-2002, 01:35 AM
Grey Wanderer?

lathspell
12-29-2002, 08:24 AM
No, I'm afraid not. Mithrandir can be translated as Greay Pilgrim or Grey Wanderer. Gandalf translates rather different.
It's in UT.

When the hobbits rescued poor Fredagar Bolger from the lockholes, after the Scouring of the Shire, what did they refer to him as (meaning a funny take on his nickname)?

Russandol
01-07-2003, 08:35 PM
Well his nickname was Fatty but Pippin refered to him as 'poor old Fredegar', not much of a take.

Beren87

Lindolirian

Arandor, the Land of the King, was part of the Mittalmar, the innermost region of Númenor. Within Arandor was Armenelos, the capital city of Westernesse. It also bordered the eastern side of Meneltarma, and had a port, Rómenna, on the Bay of Rómenna.

Great Research. As i've come to expect from you!

Lindolirian
03-01-2003, 05:18 PM
Research, Ha! smilies/wink.gif

Now this will take some research.
Good ole JRR seemed to hold Bilbo at a pretty darn high standard for running. Especially for a fifty year old, fat, three foot guy. According to information available in the Hobbit and in the Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad, you should be able to figure out Bilbo's average running speed. Now, I know math isn't my hottest subject, but I'm pretty sure I've got my calculations right. Lets see how you all do.

Lindolirian
03-04-2003, 02:37 PM
Since I'm leaving soon, and I'd like to see this one answered, I'll give you a hint. When Bilbo began this run, in which he ran at ____ mph, it was from Bag End to Bywater, which I have estimated to be 5 miles. By the way, his speed is impossibly fast, so don't be surprised at the answer you get.

How many of the participants in the Battle of Five Armies actively feature (as opposed to just being mentioned) in LotR, and who are they?

Estanesse
03-05-2003, 11:07 AM
Four
Gandalf, Gwaihir, Bilbo, and Gloin

lathspell
03-05-2003, 11:13 AM
Yes, Bilbo... Gandalf... Gloin... Gwaihir and a lot of other Eagles like Landroval and Meneldor the Swift

The Saucepan Man
03-05-2003, 08:47 PM
I think Estanesse takes the prize, since I was thinking of characters who were specifically identified in The Hobbit, and of the Eagles only Gwaihir was identified (by his title, anyway).

Arguably, Thranduil could be included, since he plays an active part in the War of the Ring, but since he plays no active part in the story that was told in LotR, I am happy to exclude him from the answer.

So, Estanesse, it's your turn ... smilies/smile.gif

From "Riddles in the Dark":

"A bit low for goblins, at least for the big ones", thought Bilbo, not knowing that even the big ones, the orcs of the mountains, go along at a great speed stooping low with their hands almost on the ground.

Yes, King Eärnur left the crown in his father's, King Eärnil's, tomb when he went to face the Lord of Morgul (the Witchking). And there it stayed until King Elessar was crowned, "guarded" by the king, for Eärnur never returned.

lathspell
04-04-2003, 01:40 PM
No, not what I wanted to hear. It's broad, but it's something like a quote... it states (where I got this question) that:.... filled the Elves with amazement because...

Try on smilies/smile.gif

gilraën
04-05-2003, 02:53 PM
From Nogrod and Belegost the Naugrim came forth into Beleriand; and the Elves were filled with amazement, for they had believed themselves to be the only living things in Middle-Earth that spoke with words or wrought with hands, and that all others were but birds and beasts. But they could understand no word of the tongue of the Naugrim, which to their ears was cumbrous and unlovely; and few ever of the Eldar have achieved the mastery of it.

Is that what you meant?

What is another name for the Seat of Amon Hen, and why was it called that?

Pallando B.C

The Seat of Seeing, but I can't find why it is called that.

Eruanna
04-07-2003, 09:05 AM
I think Pallando is right, but I also found this:
Amon Hen was the Hill of the Eye, or Hill of Sight. Its partner, Amon Lhaw was the Hill of Hearing. Aragorn said (in FotR) that in the days of the Great Kings, high seats were placed there so that a watch could be kept all around.

Beren87

Eruanna basicly got it right. It was called that because you could see ffor miles around.

Are you looking for their locations in M-E? or are you looking for where they were in Aman before they were given to the Numenoreans?

In M-E they were located at Elostirion in Emyn Beriad, Annuminas, Amon Sul, Orthanc, Minas Anor, Minas Ithil, and Osgiliath.

In Aman... *shrugs* I've not been able to find anything... I think if those locations are listed it must be in some part of the "sacred writings" that I don't have a copy of smilies/wink.gif

What was Gorlim's 'shame' and why?

Eruanna
04-13-2003, 08:17 AM
Gorlim's *shame* was that he betrayed his friend Barahir and his *gang* to the forces of Morgoth. Captured and tortured he would not give them up, until he was made to believe that his (in fact dead) wife would be restored to him if he told the whereabouts of their hiding place in Dorthonion. After the bargain was made Sauron revealed that what Gorlim had believed to be his wife, was actually a phantom, created by evil magic. Barahir and the rest were found and killed (the Orcs holding onto his hand bearing his ring, later recovered by Beren, his son) and Gorlim was "cruelly put to death" as his *reward* for his treachery........Will that do? smilies/smile.gif

The Battle was the Kinslaying at Alqualonde.
