Ahem... Go ahead Finwe.
Finwe
01-03-2004, 01:36 PM
Right-o! Just because I feel like being difficult, this question is going to be a riddle:
We are partially rabbits,
Famous for bringing chocolate,
We are partially children,
Or an old tea-drinker's word for them,
We were named for our transports,
Our nassty, nassty transports,
Killed a king we did,
Killed his son we did,
And killed his other son who came along,
Yet killed were we, rather disgracefully,
While getting drunk, and drinking some more,
The place we died is something scouts do,
Oh woe are we, Oh woe are we.
Try making sense out of that one. The answer that I'm looking for is the battle where the answer to the riddle was slain.

I think it was the Battle of the Camp or something like that.
Finwe

01-13-2004, 11:27 AM
Sorry about that. I have exams. Which war was going on when the entwives were lost? Should be easy.
Elrond of Rivendell
01-13-2004, 12:06 PM
The War of the Last Alliance?
nobody
01-15-2004, 12:19 PM
No it was before that.
Elrond of Rivendell
01-15-2004, 12:38 PM
I just found a quote:
I remember it was long ago - in the time of the war between Sauron and the Men of the Sea ... .
Could it be the war between Sauron and the Kings of Numenor, although I don't recall its exact name? smilies/wink.gif
nobody
01-17-2004, 03:49 PM
Yes correct
Elrond of Rivendell
01-17-2004, 04:03 PM

Correct. Your go NightKnight.
NightKnight
01-18-2004, 11:36 AM
In what battle did Ancalagon meet his doom?
Lindolirian
01-18-2004, 01:45 PM
The War of Wrath in which he was slain by Earendil.
NightKnight
01-19-2004, 11:21 AM
Yup, please continue.
Lindolirian
01-22-2004, 06:09 PM
Name the battles in which one or more Balrog was present.
NightKnight
01-23-2004, 06:40 AM
All of them? Wow...
I suppose there were some when the Valar defeated Melkor the first time, when the Elves where just born.
They defeated Ungoliant when Morgoth had stolen the Silmarils.
Dagor-nuin-Giliath
They captured Maedhros after the battle.
Dagor Aglareb?
Nirnaeth Arnoediad
Dagor Bragollach
The Fall of Gondolin
The one that Glorfindel fought on the way out
War of Wrath
Durin's Bane killing Durin and Nain
Battle of the Peak
I think that's all...

Atack of the white consel attack on Dol Guldur.
Battles of the Fords of Isen.

NightKnight
02-07-2004, 04:50 AM
Several. smilies/wink.gif
Also, I don't count Dol Guldur as WotR, since it was around 80 years earlier.
Estanesse
02-09-2004, 04:26 AM
I would like to add the following :) , the attack on Lothlorien and the battle of Dale. Rivendell was also under attack, but I’m not sure if you count it as a war  (the same with the Ents attack on Isengard).
I'm sure I forget one or two ;)
NightKnight
02-10-2004, 07:38 AM
Rivendell was never under attack. And you're still missing some. :p
Lindolirian
02-11-2004, 05:01 PM

In which battle did Lòmion die?
NightKnight
02-14-2004, 05:57 AM
In the Fall of Gondolin.
Lomion = Maeglin.

02-15-2004, 08:35 AM
How many battles did Aragorn fight in on his way to become the king? (I'm only counting those after he met Frodo)
Sleepy Ranger
02-16-2004, 05:26 AM
After meeting Frodo, lets see......well at Amon Hen if you count that as a battle. Helms Deep, Pellenor, The Black Gate and The one at Umbar where he Took(ha!) the dead and that at Weathertop though I'm not sure if he fought all it says is Frodo say Strider jump out of the darknees and so on.
NightKnight
02-16-2004, 01:50 PM
That's good, please continue. :)
Sleepy Ranger
02-21-2004, 03:03 PM
well next question-
In which battle was the past tense of the synonym of "get" nearly get crushed under a big beast but saved by one near the ground? And name the 2 people.
Arvedui III
02-21-2004, 03:43 PM
I don't pretend to know what the 'get' clue is about, but it sounds like the battle of Morannon, when Pippin was crushed under a troll and save by Gimli, who is low to the ground. Or maybe Beregond and Pippin, who is also closer to the ground than most.
Sleepy Ranger
02-21-2004, 03:49 PM
The battle of Morannon, Pippin saved by Gimli it is,
Continue.:)
Arvedui III
02-21-2004, 06:23 PM
Thanks. Herm...here's an easy one. Name all the battles in which eagles came to the rescue.
NightKnight
02-21-2004, 06:29 PM
The War of Wrath, the escape of the fugitives of Gondolin, the Battle of Five Armies, the battle at Morannon...those are all I can think of.
Arvedui III
02-21-2004, 09:18 PM
Those are all the ones I can think of too. Your go NightKnight.
NightKnight
02-22-2004, 06:55 AM
Name the two elven leaders that were killed during the first two battles in the Beleriand wars (the first unnamed one and Dagor-nuin-Giliath).
Lindolirian
02-22-2004, 05:24 PM
Denethor and Fëanor.
NightKnight
02-22-2004, 06:03 PM
You're right, please continue. :)
Lindolirian
02-24-2004, 03:55 PM
Name at least five battles that hobbits have been in.
Sleepy Ranger
02-24-2004, 04:04 PM
Pellenor, Morannon, The Battle of Bywater, Amon-Hen, Battle of Greenfields
Lindolirian
02-25-2004, 06:49 AM
Amon Hen? One on hundreds, no matter how well he did, is hardly a battle. The rest are good though. First person to come up with the fifth battle wins!
Sleepy Ranger
02-25-2004, 08:48 AM
The March of the Ents against Isengard. And the Battle of the Five Armies.
Lindolirian
02-25-2004, 02:22 PM
That works!
Sleepy Ranger
02-29-2004, 02:12 PM
Name the 3 who got caught up in a wa rather unknowingly.
rutslegolas
03-02-2004, 11:19 PM
i think they are pippin,merry,ents
but i think my answer is wrong
Sleepy Ranger
03-04-2004, 12:25 AM
Well not Treebeard. M & P aren't whom I had in mind but they also fit in. First person to name the third takes it.
NightKnight
03-04-2004, 02:05 PM
Fingolfin during the kinslaying of Alqualonde?
Sleepy Ranger
03-04-2004, 02:12 PM
Well not whom I had in mind......But take it away...
NightKnight
03-04-2004, 04:03 PM
Who did you have in mind then?
Morgoth, Sauron and Gothmog killed two noldorin lords each. Say who killed who, and in what battles.
Lindolirian
03-05-2004, 01:05 PM
Morgoth killed Finwë before the door of Formenos. He also killed Fingolfin in the duel at the gate of Angband.
Sauron killed Celebrimbor in the first War of the Ring when he overran Eregion. He later killed Gil-Galad during the Seige of Barad-dur.
Gothmog killed Fëanor in the Dagor-nuin-Giliath, and died while killing Ecthelion in the Sack of Gondolin.
NightKnight
03-06-2004, 10:31 AM
So close. But maybe I should have been more specific. I was looking for people from Finwë's House, but I'll give it to you. The last one was Fingon during Nirnaeth.
Lindolirian
03-10-2004, 06:54 AM
In what battle was Gelmir killed?
NightKnight
03-10-2004, 08:37 AM
Supposing you mean Gwindor's brother, he was killed just before Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
Lindolirian
03-10-2004, 07:31 PM
Correct!
NightKnight
03-11-2004, 01:58 PM
An easy one: Name the four battles of the Beleriand wars that were named.
symestreem
03-11-2004, 04:59 PM
Dagor-nuin-Giliath; Dagor Agraleb; Dagor Bragollach; Nirnaeth Arnoediad

It was actually Aglareb, but I suppose that's what you mean. Your turn. :)
Arvedui III
03-22-2004, 05:38 PM
This thread should not die. At least it should not die alone, unaided.
Lindolirian
03-22-2004, 08:47 PM
So don't let it die! It's been ten days y'know...
In the Battle of Pelennor Fields who led the archers against the Oliphaunts?
Finwe
03-22-2004, 09:08 PM
Duilin and Derufin?
Nilpaurion Felagund
03-22-2004, 09:09 PM
Duilin and Derufin. :)
Aw, Elf! Finwe, we cross-posted!
Finwe
03-22-2004, 09:11 PM
Ha... well, I'm a minute ahead!
Nilpaurion Felagund
03-22-2004, 09:21 PM
Well, that "minute" could have been mere seconds, as 11:08.52 and 11:09:03 is separated not by a minute.
Oh, get off it! She posted first!
Lindolirian
03-23-2004, 03:06 PM
And it would seem that the faster typist wins! So sorry, Nil
Lindolirian
04-05-2004, 05:36 PM
Alright Nil, Finwë's been gone too long. It's your thread now since you also had the correct answer!
Finwe
04-05-2004, 09:37 PM
Oops... sorry... completely forgot about this thread.... if Nil doesn't show up, can I go ahead and post a new one?
Lindolirian
04-06-2004, 06:29 AM
Oh yeah, you popped up just in time! Nice... :)
Finwe
04-06-2004, 06:36 PM
Haha... all right...
In the name of which battle was Niobe's stream involved?
This'll take a little knowledge about Greek mythology as well.
Lindolirian
04-06-2004, 08:00 PM
Yet tears continued to to flow; and, borne on a whirlwind to her native mountain, she still remains, a mass of rock, from which atrickling stream flows, the tribute of her never-ending grief.
Nirnaeth Arnoediad
Finwe
04-15-2004, 06:51 PM
Excellent work! Your turn.
Lindolirian
04-19-2004, 02:59 PM
When was the Battle of Eriador, and who were the participants?
NightKnight
04-19-2004, 03:05 PM
1695-1699 Second Age, it was Sauron VS. the elves of Eregion, Lindon and Lothlorien, the dwarves of Moria and the men of Numenor.
Lindolirian
04-19-2004, 03:07 PM
Righty-ho! Hey check out Active Topics... It looks pretty funny with all of our rapid fire Q and A session we're having. It's like the Quiz Room is on fire
NightKnight
04-19-2004, 03:09 PM
Hehe, yeah. We are just sooo good. :p
In what battle was the first time someone broke through the gate of Minas Tirith, and who was it?
Lindolirian
04-19-2004, 03:36 PM
I somehow feel like I'm falling into a trap when I say this..
In 457 FA, Sauron took Minas Tirith (and most likely broke its gate). But you were most likely referring to the Battle of Pelennor Fields in 3018 TA in which Grond under the command of the Witch King was hurled thrice against the gate of Minas Tirith by great mountain trolls.
NightKnight
04-19-2004, 03:47 PM
Oh, clever to find that one too...I hadn't even thought about it. You are right though, it was that pesky Witch-King. But on the other hand, he had to pay for it a short while thereafter. ;)
Lindolirian
04-19-2004, 04:03 PM
In which battle was a king likened to Béma?
NK: Sorry, our rapidfire Q and A is about to end I have to eat dinner and get off to band practice now. It was fun while it lasted!
NightKnight
04-19-2004, 04:08 PM
It was the battle of the Pelennor Fields I believe, wasn't it Theoden? Or was it Fingolfin riding to Angband?
It was indeed fun. I think you should try out my anagrams, nobody does that. :(
Lindolirian
04-19-2004, 08:09 PM
Yes, it was Theoden on his first charge of the Pelennor.
Hmm well anagrams have never been my strong point, but I'll give it a whirl.
NightKnight
04-20-2004, 01:20 PM
Too tired to think of something hard... In what greater battle was Anduril first used?
Tulkas the Mighty
04-25-2004, 06:26 PM
Battle of the Hornburg?
NightKnight
04-27-2004, 04:28 AM
Yup.

Lindolirian

Hey, we just happened to be online at the same time...
In what "battle" was Fredegar Bolger taken captive?
Tulkas the Mighty
04-30-2004, 06:59 AM
Well it wasn't really a battle, but I think he got smoked out of the smials at Scary or something odd like that
samwise8504
04-30-2004, 07:01 AM
the battle of bywater
Lindolirian
04-30-2004, 02:25 PM
You are correct, Tulkas!
Tulkas the Mighty
05-04-2004, 03:35 PM
In which battle did the heavy hand fall?
Fingolfin II
05-05-2004, 02:13 AM
He (Mablung) fell in the Sack of Doriath.
Tulkas the Mighty
05-27-2004, 09:11 PM
Sorry for the wait! You are correct :D
Fingolfin II
05-27-2004, 10:17 PM
Cheers Tulkas.
In which battle did Halbarad die?
NightKnight
05-28-2004, 04:00 AM
In the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
Fingolfin II
05-28-2004, 06:48 AM
Yes :).
NightKnight
05-28-2004, 09:30 AM
Name three battles (smaller or greater) where elves and dwarves fought together.
Sleepy Ranger
05-28-2004, 10:28 AM
The battle of the five armies, Helms Deep?(Legolas & Gimli), Pellenor (Again Legolas & Gimli.), The battle of sudden flame? Dagor Argaleb(sp)?
NightKnight
05-28-2004, 02:28 PM
I don't know if there were any dwarves in Bragollach or Aglareb, but you're correct on the other ones. Please continue! :)
Sleepy Ranger
05-29-2004, 05:52 AM
Name two battles in which two brothers were slain together.
Fingolfin II
05-29-2004, 06:07 AM
The fight at the mouth of Sirion and the Battle of Unnumbered Tears.
NightKnight
05-29-2004, 06:30 AM
Unnumbered Tears? Which brothers were slain there?
Anyway, I'll say Pelennor Fields (Derufin and Duilin) and Dagor Bragollach (Angrod and Aegnor).
Sleepy Ranger
05-29-2004, 07:10 AM
Nightknight has it.
NightKnight
05-30-2004, 04:55 AM
What gave Morgoth the victory in Unnumbered Tears?
Sleepy Ranger
05-30-2004, 05:40 AM
Trechary of men.
NightKnight
05-30-2004, 06:53 AM
Yes.
Tulkas the Mighty
06-07-2004, 11:48 PM

Which battle was fought between the Limlight and Anduin?
NightKnight

NightKnight
06-09-2004, 12:30 AM

Fingolfin II

Fingolfin II
06-09-2004, 05:11 AM
In which battle did Nain fall?
NightKnight
06-09-2004, 05:54 AM
Which Nain? Nain I was killed by Durin's Bane, and Nain, the father of Dain Ironfoot was killed in the Battle of Azanulbizar. I suppose that's the one you meant.
Fingolfin II
06-11-2004, 01:54 AM
I should have been more specific- it was the second one I was thinking about. You're up anyway ;).
NightKnight
06-11-2004, 05:29 AM
In what battle did a star kill something black?
Lindolirian
06-11-2004, 12:32 PM

Lindolirian
06-13-2004, 06:13 PM
Which battle took place in 75 First Age?

In which battle did the Lord of Lossarnach fall?
NightKnight
06-15-2004, 04:46 AM

Fingolfin II
06-16-2004, 01:06 AM
Sure did. Poor old Forlong .
NightKnight
06-16-2004, 11:33 AM
Yeah. But maybe his brave deeds saved the day. :p
Where did king Folcwinë's twin sons fall?
Carnimírië
06-16-2004, 11:44 AM
The Battle of the Field of Celebrant, methinks.
Lindolirian
06-16-2004, 08:01 PM
But methinks that they fell defending Gondor from the Haradrim fighting in Ithilien in 2885 TA in the service of Turin II.
Nilpaurion Felagund
06-16-2004, 08:49 PM
They fought in the Battle of the Fords of Poros. So they died near the river Poros, and were buried in Haudh-in-Gwanur. A scary mound, if you ask me.
NightKnight
06-17-2004, 05:44 AM
Lindo and Nil, you're both right. But Lindo got there first, so it's your turn.
Lindolirian
08-01-2004, 09:56 PM
And I find another thread that I let die...
What were the dates of the Seige of Erebor in the WotR?
Nilpaurion Felagund
08-01-2004, 11:03 PM
I only see one: March 17, TA 3019.
If you mean the date of the beginning of the siege to its end, then: March 17-27, TA 3019.
Lindolirian
08-02-2004, 09:32 PM
Right you are!
Nilpaurion Felagund
08-02-2004, 09:37 PM
How long did Gondor's war with Wainriders last?
Lindolirian
08-02-2004, 09:43 PM
Looks like they first appeared in 1851 but first attacked in 1856 and then they were eventually squished in the Battle of the Camp in 1944. So 88 years of war, 93 of umm exisitence as "Wainriders".
Nilpaurion Felagund
08-02-2004, 09:49 PM
:)
Lindolirian
08-02-2004, 09:52 PM
In what year did Fornost fall?
Nilpaurion Felagund
08-02-2004, 09:58 PM
The nassty wicked Witch-King tooks it.
Gil-Galad
08-03-2004, 11:33 AM

Lindolirian
08-03-2004, 09:10 PM
Ha! Yeah Vietnam... Go Nil!
Nilpaurion Felagund
08-04-2004, 11:34 PM
Which war led to the formation of Imladris? And what age did this war happen?
Gil-Galad
08-05-2004, 10:32 AM
It Happened in the Second Age, i don't qutie remember the name but it was when Sauron disguised himself and went to Eregion and made the Rings of Power, but when he made the one ring the elves basically declared war on him, so Sauron came and killed them but Elrond came with help from Lindon and took the refugees to Imaldris, or Rivendell...beginning of the Last Alliance me thinks
Nilpaurion Felagund
08-05-2004, 11:50 PM
You are generally right, Gil-galad, but I need the exact details...
Details, shmetails. Give the good guy the thread.
Right.
The thread is yours. ;)

Were looking for a Man who was Ashamed of something. Who led someone under cover and who was alive around TA3019, but the battle in which he led someone under cover was before WoTR ...
First I was thinking Bard and the Battle of the Five Armies, but could'nt find anything he was ashamed of.
Then Boromir had a lot to feel ashamed about, but I can't recall that he ever retreated (except from Osgiliath with three other men...)
Then I thought Faramir... Again no shame (I think) but he did leed his people to Henneth Anun
Im spend - give us another hint Gil-Galad!

Ancalagon the Black and others in the War of Wrath and Smaug in the Battle of Five Armies, but if you include single combat as a battle then Glaurung v. Turin at the Crossings of Teiglin and Scatha v. Fram.

In which battle did Thorin, son of Thrain, gain his nickname.
Legate of Amon Lanc

Groin, you are soon going to find out that you should not have done that.
Battle of Azanulbizar. He used oaken branch to defend himself when he lost his shield there.

Oh man, now I get!:D
Legate of Amon Lanc
12-01-2007, 05:03 AM
:D
Let's try this: Someone decided to stand with certain faction in a certain battle because of the sympathies with their leader and also because he could easily retreat if he stood with this faction.
My questions:
Who?
In what battle?
With what faction did he side?
Folwren
12-01-2007, 11:31 AM
Who? Brodda, Ulfing Chieftan.
In what battle? Battle of Unnumbered Tears
With what faction did he side? Morgoth and his followers.
Brodda, in sympathy with his leader, Uldor the son of Ulfang, sided with Morgoth and his minions against the elves and other free people's of Middle Earth.
Only thing I dont know about is the easy to retreat bit.
Legate of Amon Lanc
12-01-2007, 12:12 PM
And that is very important. Sorry, not correct answer.
But it really isn't very hard, trust me :)
Gil-Galad
12-01-2007, 02:03 PM
Who? Turgon of Gondolin
In what battle? Battle of Unnumbered Tears(i beleive)
With what faction did he side? with his brothers.
Turgon remained passive for awhile, during this battle he chose to come out but in the rearguard, when the battle turned he easily retreated back into Gondolin.
Legate of Amon Lanc
12-01-2007, 02:10 PM
Nope. Though your reasoning is very good, Gil. But I can maybe add that the person, though one of the named reasons was the possibility of an easy retreat, did not in the end use this possibility, i.e. did not retreat.
Gil-Galad
12-01-2007, 02:18 PM
Who? Maeglin
What battle? Fall of Gondolin
What faction? Army of Morgoth
Maeglin sided with them so he could obtain his passion, and with Gondolin surrounded he could easily escape if he allied them, but alas he was cast over the side of the walls to his death.
Legate of Amon Lanc

12-02-2007, 06:54 AM

Am I right or am right?:D

But what about the Battle of the Camp, where the Easterling Wainriders were defeated? It took place in the North Ithilien, while the (later victorious) Gondorians came from the South.

It wasn't. I had to look it up :D
Okay, so what to post? What about this:
There are many battles commemorated among the defenders of the West (and Beleriand). Once in a while some Gondorian Steward or Elven Lord could rise up at the table and say "Today, we commemorate the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of ..." But what about the other side? Did the followers of the (Great) Enemy commemorate these things? We don't know. But what we know is that they remembered them. And we know of at least one such an event that was remembered under different name than in the Western World. Now what I want from you is to give me that name.

Well, all I can think about is the conversation between Gorbag and Shagrat.
Let me get the quote.
Ok, here it is:
There's no grief in that; but think-there's someone loose hereabouts as is more dangerous than any other damned rebel that ever walked since the bad old times, since the Great Siege. Something has slipped.'
So the Orcs refer to the Siege of Barad-dûr as the Great Siege.
