If you want me to quote everything on the map it is a big post. Or do you mean the Dwarfish runes?

I think we have a winner !!! smilies/biggrin.gif Congratulations ! And Earwen , you can bring on the next question .

elven maiden Earwen
07-06-2003, 10:50 AM
Why did Smaug think Barrel was the name of Bilbo's pony?

Beren87
07-06-2003, 02:04 PM
because when listing his "titles" Bilbo called himself Barrel-rider.

elven maiden Earwen
07-06-2003, 11:04 PM
correct

Beren87
07-06-2003, 11:45 PM
What could Bilbo not imagine about the Long Lake?

Ophelia
07-07-2003, 12:40 PM
Sorry for the inncorrect translation but I did my best .
Bilbo could never imagine that an open of water , which is not a sea , could look so big .
If that is not enough than the sentence is to be found in chapter 10 , the 6th paragraph , the 4th sentence . Well atleast so it is in my book .

Beren87
07-07-2003, 02:02 PM
That would be very correct Ophelia, and thanks for the specifics.

Your go.

Ophelia
07-08-2003, 01:10 PM
Why , thank you ! That was the closest translation I could thought of .
So here goes my next question : which Dwarf was set free as the first when Bilbo recued them from the spider webs ?
And again it is too simple but all the trixy questions are difficult to translate in English so forgive me for this simple question .
Good luck on answering ! smilies/wink.gif

Beren87
07-08-2003, 01:32 PM
Thorin, me thinks?

Ophelia
07-15-2003, 02:40 PM
Maybe it just is so . You can give us the next question . smilies/wink.gif

Beren87
07-15-2003, 02:44 PM
Well, I was just guessing the answer too, I'm rather suprised to have gotten it correct.

What was Gollum's reward if we would have won the quiz game?

Gwaihir the Windlord
07-16-2003, 01:16 AM
Bilbo's carcass to eat.

Helkahothion
07-16-2003, 04:43 AM
Darn, you beat me to it. And If Bilbo won he would be guided outside by Gollum.

Beren87
07-16-2003, 03:48 PM
Kudos to Gwaihir, the thread is now his. Nice try Helka, you almost had it, but a windlord is quite the difficult creature to outrun.

Beren87
07-26-2003, 02:16 PM
*kicks the thread to the top*

Oh Windlord?

Gwaihir the Windlord
07-27-2003, 02:39 AM
Oh, right, thanks. Sorry about that, a windlord is also quite the difficult bugger when it comes to getting his attention from all the way up...

What were the various colours of Gandalf's fire-pinecones?

Ophelia
07-27-2003, 04:49 AM
Let me guess .... Firstly he threw a blue lighted pinecone and there followed more blue lighted ones , red and green lighted ones too .
Did I guess right ? smilies/biggrin.gif

Ten day rule.

New question: what was the color of the handkerchief that Bilbo borrowed from Elrond?

luthien-elvenprincess
03-15-2004, 05:55 PM
Red silk:)

symestreem
03-16-2004, 06:04 PM
Correct. :)
I can't picture Elrond with a red silk handkerchief. Maybe it was one of those Father's Day gifts where they smile and tell the kids it's just what they wanted. Maybe that's why Elrond didn't mind loaning it. ;)

luthien-elvenprincess
03-17-2004, 05:51 PM
he-he, somehow I have trouble picturing Elves with red clothing. I associate more subdued colors with them.

An easy ?

What did Fili hope he never smelled again?

Don't even have to go to the book for that one- its apples!

Sorry, I forgot about this thread! Next question:
Where is my copy of the Hobbit? No, no, I mean,
Smaug was ______ wealthy.

Nilpaurion Felagund

...O Smaug the unassesably wealthy...

Nilpaurion Felagund
03-31-2004, 09:08 PM
Name all the titles of Bilbo that he mentioned before Smaug. [insert evil smiley here]

Firefoot
04-01-2004, 06:24 AM
*takes a big breath* "I come from under the hill, and under the hills and over the hillls my paths led. And through the air. I am he that walks unseen" "I am the clue-finder, the web-cutter, the stinging fly. I was chosen for the lucky number." "I am he that buries friends alive and drowns them and draws them alive again from water. I came from the end of a bag, but no bag went over me." "I am the friend of bears and the gurest of eagles. I am Ringwiner and Luckwearer; and I am Barrel-rider." I think that's it.

Hey, has anyone else noticed that the order of the smilies in the box changes?

Nilpaurion Felagund
04-04-2004, 09:34 PM
*nods* Go ahead.

Firefoot
04-05-2004, 06:07 AM
How about an easy one - which dwarf dropped Bilbo in the Goblins' caves and caused him to be lost?

luthien-elvenprincess
04-05-2004, 06:32 AM
Dori was carrying Bilbo.

Firefoot
04-05-2004, 06:33 AM

luthien-elvenprincess
04-05-2004, 07:45 PM
Gandalf couldn't resist having the last word...where, and what did he say?

Firefoot
04-06-2004, 08:03 AM
Just before he left the dwarves going into Mirkwood he said "Good-bye! Be good, take care of yourselves - and DON'T LEAVE THE PATH!"

luthien-elvenprincess
04-06-2004, 04:47 PM
Accurate answer!

Firefoot
04-07-2004, 06:13 AM
What instrument did each of the Dwarves play?

Saraphim
04-07-2004, 11:19 AM
Here goes:
Thorin: harp
Fili & Kili: fiddles
Dori, Nori & Ori: flutes
Bombur: drum
Bifur & Bofur: clarinets
Dwalin & Balin: viols

I cannot find anywhere that Oin and Gloin had instruments of any kind.

Firefoot
04-07-2004, 12:56 PM
Yes.

Saraphim
04-07-2004, 02:38 PM
Yes! Ok, here's my question:

Upon entering Rivindell, what do the Elves warn Bilbo not to do, and why?

Bombadil
04-07-2004, 02:50 PM
to not eat all the cakes?

Saraphim
04-07-2004, 11:24 PM
Right! :D

Bombadil
04-08-2004, 09:44 AM
What were two insulting names Bibo called the spiders?

Arestevana
04-08-2004, 10:30 AM
I believe 'lazy lob' and 'attercop', were the two he used.

Bombadil
04-08-2004, 03:57 PM
correct :D

(also one of my favorites not mentioned- tomnoddy)

Saraphim
04-16-2004, 04:28 PM
Ok, its been ten days, so here goes:

What were the four things Gollum guessed were in Bilbo's pocket?

Orcrist
04-18-2004, 08:42 PM
I believe it was handses, knife, string, or nothing.

Saraphim
04-19-2004, 03:26 PM
Right-o Orcrist!

Orcrist
04-19-2004, 08:22 PM

Yup.

Sirithheruwen
04-21-2004, 02:32 PM
What are the runes that Elrond found next to the plain runes called, and why could he see them?

Bombadil
04-21-2004, 02:44 PM
moon letters, and elrond saw them because he held it up to the moon

Sirithheruwen
04-21-2004, 02:51 PM
Yup! Your go! :)

04-21-2004, 05:46 PM
Found in the text, give a summary of how the game of golf was invented in ME.

symestreem
04-21-2004, 06:21 PM
There was an invasion of the Shire by goblins. Bullroarer Took hit the head goblin in the head with a club. The head flew off and landed in a rabbit hole, 'thus ending the battle and inventing the game of golf at the same time'.

Bombadil
04-22-2004, 08:13 PM
haha! That always makes me laugh! Nice work, you're up.

Orcrist
05-01-2004, 02:28 PM

Captured on Monday nite or Tuesday morn...escaped on Thursday.

Orcrist
05-01-2004, 05:58 PM

luthien-elvenprincess
05-02-2004, 07:33 AM
Easy one:
How many teeth did Gollum have?

NightKnight
05-02-2004, 07:37 AM
How many teeth does Gollum have?
So I'll just say six. ;)

luthien-elvenprincess
05-02-2004, 11:19 AM
:D Oh my...how embarassing! On the same page even. Well, my excuse is... um...um...maybe you could just proceed really fast and no one will ever see this!
Sorry!

NightKnight
05-02-2004, 01:07 PM
Lol, don't worry. It wasn't actually on the same page. ;)

Easy one: Name the three that brought Smaug down.

Bombadil
05-02-2004, 04:25 PM
by 3 IM thinking you mean the chain of 3? So...

Bilbo
The Thrush
Bard

NightKnight
05-03-2004, 12:27 AM
Absolutely. Your turn. :)

Bombadil
05-03-2004, 01:00 PM

Ori - gray
Oin - brown

Bifur and Bofur - yellow
Bombur - pale green
Thorin - Light blue with silver tassel

Bombadil
05-03-2004, 04:47 PM
very nice! :D

Firefoot
05-04-2004, 05:31 AM

On the first day of the last moon of Autumn.

Firefoot
05-04-2004, 01:46 PM
Yep.

NightKnight
05-05-2004, 02:19 PM
What color did the arrow Bard shot Smaug with have?

Sirithheruwen
05-05-2004, 03:15 PM
Black.

NightKnight
05-06-2004, 01:30 AM
Yuppers. Very special arrow, that one. Your turn. :)

Sirithheruwen
05-06-2004, 03:44 PM
And now, another color question:

What color did the Lake-men of Lake-town think the rivers were going to turn now that the King Under the Mountain had returned?

Bombadil
05-06-2004, 05:04 PM
dont have book with me, so could be wrong but- black?

Firefoot

Sirithheruwen
05-10-2004, 05:48 PM

Firefoot
05-11-2004, 04:54 AM
Yeppers.

Sirithheruwen
05-11-2004, 04:12 PM
Describe a hobbit hole. (Straight from the book, if you can.)

Firefoot
05-11-2004, 04:39 PM
Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of womrs and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat. It was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.
It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle. The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable hole without smoke, with panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs, and lots and lots of pegs for hats and coats- the hobbit was found of visitors. The tunnel wound on and on, going fairly but not quite straight into the side of the hill - The Hill, as all the people for many miles round called it - and many little round doors opened out of it, first on one side and then on another. No going upstairs for this hobbit: bedrooms, bathrooms, cellars, pantries (lots of these), wardrobes (he had whole room devoted to clothes), kitchens, dining-rooms, all were on the same floor, and indeed on the same passage. The best rooms were all on the left-hand side (going in), for these were the only ones to have windows, deep-set round windows looking over his garden, and meadows beyond, sloping down to the river.Phew!

Sirithheruwen
05-12-2004, 06:58 AM
Yes! Sorry, I couldn't resist. Go ahead Firefoot!

Firefoot
05-12-2004, 02:50 PM
When and why did Bilbo name his sword?

NightKnight
05-12-2004, 03:25 PM
I believe it was in Mirkwood when he was fighting the spiders, and he named it Sting because he was like a stinging bee.

Firefoot
05-15-2004, 07:32 PM
Yes.

NightKnight
05-16-2004, 12:54 AM
Why did the three trolls turn into stone?

Fingolfin II
05-16-2004, 02:32 AM
Because they were caught unawares in the sun, by the wits of Gandalf, who made them argue against each other.

NightKnight
05-16-2004, 01:03 PM
Yes. :)

Fingolfin II
05-17-2004, 01:42 AM
Who was the person that even Bilbo didn't need to be told to fear?

Kath
05-17-2004, 03:37 AM
Smaug

05-17-2004, 07:07 AM

05-18-2004, 08:22 PM

05-20-2004, 08:20 PM
Take it FingolfinII :D

Fingolfin II
05-20-2004, 09:16 PM
Cheers.

Where did Gandalf's cousin dwell?

Bombadil
05-20-2004, 09:24 PM
his "cousin" Radagast dwelt on the Southern Borders of mirkwood i believe.

Fingolfin II
05-20-2004, 10:30 PM
Can you give me a specific name of his dwelling?

samwise8504
05-21-2004, 06:58 AM
rhosgobel

Fingolfin II
05-21-2004, 08:48 PM
Rhosgobel it is!

samwise8504
05-22-2004, 10:20 AM
name the items gollum keeps in his pockets

Kath
05-22-2004, 10:59 AM
Im a little confused, Gollum doesn't have any pockets so the answers nothing.
If you mean like in the riddle game then its a knife, handses, string or nothing.

Firefoot
05-22-2004, 03:51 PM
Well, at one time Gollum kept the Ring in a pouch. Is that what you mean?

luthien-elvenprincess
05-22-2004, 04:17 PM
Fish-bones, goblin's teeth, wet shells, a bit of bat-wing, a sharp stone to sharpen his fangs on, and other nasty things.

samwise8504
05-23-2004, 10:21 AM
luthiens correct because when bilbo asks gollum what he has in his pocket gollum starts to think what he has in his own pocket

luthien-elvenprincess
05-23-2004, 02:52 PM
What did Bilbo say was the "dreariest and dullest part of all this wretched, tiresome, uncomfortable adventure!"?

all wrong

luthien-elvenprincess
05-25-2004, 03:18 AM
I am leaving on a 7 day trip tomorrow and I don't think I will have access to the internet...so I am giving a huge clue in order to pass this thread along. :)

Clue: Read the chapter entitled 'Barrels Out of Bond'

Fingolfin II
05-25-2004, 05:08 AM
I haven't read The Hobbit for a few years now so I'm probably wrong- but was it when he was stealing pies and wine from Lake-town?

Sirithheruwen
05-25-2004, 07:16 AM
Got it! :) When he was hiding in the Elvenkings castle in Mirkwood.

luthien-elvenprincess
05-25-2004, 12:16 PM
Yes, he was burglarizing food from elven homes in Mirkwood.
Sirith, you got it! :)

Sirithheruwen
05-25-2004, 03:15 PM
Thank you!
Which riddle that Gollum asked Bilbo put Bilbo most out of sorts? (I will accept two answers).

Bombadil
05-25-2004, 03:18 PM
The "time" riddle? Luckily Bilbo got it correct by accident!

Sirithheruwen
05-25-2004, 03:19 PM
Yes, that was one. The other was the "fish" riddle.

Your go!

Bombadil
05-28-2004, 09:03 PM
a riddle:

The Sun!

05-28-2004, 10:19 PM
Cheers, Bombadillo.

Who killed Bolg?

NightKnight
05-29-2004, 03:37 AM
Beorn did.

Fingolfin II
05-29-2004, 05:49 AM
Yes he did.

NightKnight
05-29-2004, 06:31 AM
Why couldn't Bilbo and the dwarves go outside during the night when they were at Beorn's house?

Kath
05-29-2004, 06:36 AM
Well Gandalf told them not to, and I guess it was because Beorn was a bear and all.

NightKnight
05-30-2004, 04:56 AM
Yeah.

Kath
05-30-2004, 05:12 AM
What did Beorn say that gave the goblins some credit?
Sorry if thats a little confusing - it was the only way I could see to say it.

NightKnight
05-30-2004, 05:13 AM
That they can count?

Kath
05-30-2004, 12:08 PM
Yep

NightKnight
05-31-2004, 12:32 PM

NightKnight
05-31-2004, 12:36 PM

Morsul the Dark
05-31-2004, 12:43 PM

NightKnight

At one point in the story, Thorin could only be identified by his golden chain and by the color of his dirty and tattered sky-blue hood with its tarnished silver tassel. Where was Thorin at this point in the story?

Firefoot
06-05-2004, 10:29 AM
It was when Bilbo had just let him out of the barrel after floating down the river.

luthien-elvenprincess

you are right

Firefoot
06-07-2004, 05:17 AM
What two things did Bilbo notice about Balin when he came to visit?

Ophelia
06-07-2004, 08:58 AM
Hmmm .. Let me see ... Could the answer to this question be : Balins beard had grown several inches longer and his jewlery adorned belt had got more splendid (sorry for the bad translation but it`s hard with having a badly re-translated book) .

-+Ophelia+-

Firefoot
06-07-2004, 12:30 PM
Very good.

Ophelia
06-07-2004, 12:34 PM
Thank you !
I have to think of something harder ...
What was one thing in cooking that Bilbo did not know how to do ?

Ophelia

Was it to light a fire without matches?

Ophelia
06-07-2004, 01:35 PM
Sorry , but there was a more specific thing . But a nice try ;)

Ophelia

To cook without anything to cook?

Ophelia
06-08-2004, 11:23 AM
Nice one and as true , but still no . It seems like this question is too hard , so I`ll give you a hint : it`s something about meat .

He can't make muttin taste any better than it does?
What chapter is this in?

Ophelia
06-08-2004, 02:10 PM
Well with answers like these we`ll never get anywhere . And telling of the chapter is not going to be a quizz anymore . But if after reading the following hints you shall not find it , I`ll have no choice but to tell the chapter .
The hints :
*the one thing Bilbo couldn`t do was done by the Dwarves ;
*he couldn`t do this thing because he just had never done that and wasn`t used to do so ;
*by that time he had never called Beorn a furrier but has already "burned his tale".

I have made it obvious as obvious as I could . Who ever gets this one right gets a medal from me .

Make a fire in the rain?
So are you saying that this was before they met Beorn?

Ophelia
06-08-2004, 02:37 PM
That is exactly what I am saying . Keep looking . I have updatet the hints , so it could help more . Hope you shall have luck !

He couldn't skin and cut the meat because he was used to having it delivered by the butcher. :D

Finally ! The medal and the chance to give the next question goes to Orcrist !

What kind of magic do hobbits have?

Ophelia
06-09-2004, 09:56 AM
None , if not to take the ability of quietly and swiftly disapearing , when there is a need , as a magic .

Ophelia

Orcrist
06-09-2004, 10:13 AM
It think you got it. The quote is "They have little or no magic about them, except the ordinary everyday sort of magic that helps them to disappear quietly and quickly..."If that's what you meant then go ahead.

Ophelia
06-09-2004, 10:19 AM
Aha , it was but it is very hard to translate the "unique" terms used in the book I have (translated in my native language) . But that was the same one .
After the last one being so hard , I`ll give a very easy one :
Why are all the good rooms of a hobbit hole placed on the left side ?

OphElia

NightKnight
06-09-2004, 12:12 PM
Because they have windows?

What's your native language?

Ophelia
06-09-2004, 01:08 PM
You are correct ! Go ahead with the next question .
My native language is the very specific and complicated language of latvians . No offence is taken if you know nought of the existance of such a land .

Ophelia

NightKnight
06-09-2004, 02:57 PM
Sure I do, it's just across the Baltic Sea from here. ;) (I live in Sweden, BTW.)

Why could Bard understand the thrush?

Orcrist
06-09-2004, 03:32 PM
He was descended from a line of men from Dale who could understand the thrush.

NightKnight
06-09-2004, 03:45 PM
And which line was that?

Orcrist
06-09-2004, 09:52 PM
The exact quote is "Marvelling, he found he could understand its tongue, for he was of the race of Dale." Good enough? :D

luthien-elvenprincess
06-10-2004, 05:16 PM
Bard was of the line of Girion. :)

NightKnight
06-10-2004, 06:02 PM
Actually, I don't have the book, so I didn't know that that was the quote. But Luthien gave the answer I wanted, so I guess one of you should go.

How many armed guards did the Great Goblin have?

Orcrist
06-14-2004, 05:50 PM
No idea. I can't even find it in the book.

Firefoot
06-14-2004, 09:36 PM
Hint: It isn't in the chapters Over Hill and Under Hill or Riddles in the Dark.

Orcrist
06-14-2004, 09:43 PM
I think I figured that out already ;) When you say the Great Goblin, do you mean the one who was killed by Gandalf or the one present at the Battle of Five Armies?

Firefoot
06-15-2004, 04:59 AM
The one killed by Gandalf.

Ophelia
06-15-2004, 10:18 AM
I have to admit - all I found of the count of the goblin guards is :
six to one Dwarf and there were still 2 left for the hobbit . It makes 80 goblins .

Ophelia

Firefoot
06-15-2004, 11:18 AM
No, it specifically says somewhere that there were a certain number of guards.

Hint: Look in places where they were looking back on their journey.

Carnimírië
06-15-2004, 11:26 AM
There were thirty or forty armed guards according to Gandalf in "Queer Lodgings."

Firefoot
06-15-2004, 12:38 PM
That's what I was looking for. Go ahead!

Carnimírië
06-15-2004, 12:45 PM
What, according to Bilbo, was the "...dreariest and dullest part of all this wretched, tiresome, uncomfortable adventure"?

Hiding in the Elvenking's halls.

06-16-2004, 10:52 AM

What color handkerchief did Bilbo borrow from Elrond?

Kath
06-16-2004, 01:56 PM
A red one.

Firefoot
06-16-2004, 01:59 PM
Yes. :) Ironically enough, in that same line it says none of Bilbo's had survived, and yet it also says that he forgot it when he left.

Kath
06-16-2004, 02:08 PM
Ah but it also says that when Gandalf caught up he brought Bilbo handkerchiefs.
Um . . . when is Durins Day?

Ophelia
06-16-2004, 02:39 PM
That would be the last autumn moon`s first day , right before the begining of winter .

Ophelia

06-16-2004, 02:41 PM

Five.

Fifteen birds in five firtrees,
their feathers were fanned in a fiery breeze!
But, funny little birds, they had no wings!
O what shall we do with the funny little things?

the message is

Orcrist
