This is a thread stictly for trivia questions concerning the Hobbit. Knowledge of Tolkien's other works should not be necessary to answer any trivia in this thread. So, without further ado, here's the first question:
You've invited Kili and Fili over to your place for brunch. You set out a large meal of eggs, bacon, sausages, ham, biscuits, and pancakes for them to eat. They both seem very grateful. However, when you serve them both something to drink, Fili responds with a huff, "Uggh! I can't drink this!"
What did you serve Fili to make him respond so harshly?

This is a cool idea. I'd have to get my book, but right now I don't have it. I'll post later with the answer if someone doesn't before me!

As starter of this thread, let me make some clarifications.
1)If you have the correct answer (and have been told so) but fail to post a question in two days time, it's up for grabs.
2) Please wait for acknowledgment of your answer before posting a new question.
3) If acknowledgement is not received in two days and you can provide evidence that your answer is correct (i.e. direct passages from the book), you may go ahead and post a new question.
4) The questioner may give hints at his/her discretion.
5) The person who answered the question correctly may pass his/her turn on to somebody else, if he/she desires.

Wealth is okay...I'll take it.
I was really looking for something about treasures.
If the elf-king had a weakness it was for treasure, especially for silver and white gems; and though his hoard was rich, he was ever eager for more, since he had not yet as great a treasure as other elf-lords of old.

08-09-2002, 03:01 PM
Okay, let's see....
Bilbo decided to invite Gollum over for tea and scones on a Tuesday afternoon.
So he ambled over to Proudfoot & Hornblower's Telegraph Services to send the invitation to Gollum's little cubby hole inside the Misty Mountains.
After receiving a message in return concerning something about "being delighted" and "talk about precious things," Bilbo returned to Bag End. As he entered his front door, he mumbled to himself, "I must write this down, so I don't forget."
Where did Bilbo decide to write down this get-together with Gollum?

You're right Susan Delgado, Balin's hood was scarlet. You were supposed to wait to ask a question till I told you if you were correct or not but since you already did, I'm going to try to answer it. Is the answer...
Gandlaf's sword: Glamdring, Foe-hammer
Bilbo's sword: Sting

Yeah, I thought he only called it Sting and Childlike Empress if YOU know the answer why don't you answer it!!!!!!
TolkienGurl

The only names I can remember given to swords in The Hobbit, other than Sting, are 'Beater' and 'Biter' given to Glamdring the Foe-hammer and Orcrist the Goblin-cleaver. I don't think Sting had any other names.
Childlike Empress
10-20-2002, 11:24 AM
Ahem, Tolkeingurl, Orcrist the Goblin-cleaver. Why was that so hard???
Susan Delgado
10-20-2002, 11:37 AM
Indeed, out of place or not, the Empress is correct. Sting's Gondolinian name was Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver. And this took much longer than I expected; it was an easy question, and, in fact, its answer can be found the the same place Lady Elbereth found Glamdring. They are both named in the same sentence.
TolkienGurl
10-20-2002, 11:37 AM
Orcrist the Goblin-cleaver was Thorin's sword, not Sting!

I assume you mean Thranduil smilies/smile.gif In a great cave some miles within the edge of Mirkwood on its eastern side there lived at this time their greatest king.
TolkienGurl

Yes. Isn't that what he's called in The Hobbit? I thought that Elrond was always called Elrond, but King Thranduil was called the Elven-king.

TolkienGurl

An auction and some very suprised hobbits! Most of his things had been sold and the Sackville-Bagginses were measuring his rooms to see if their furniture would fit.

In short Bilbo was "Presumed Dead", and not everybody that said so was sorry to find the presumption wrong.
On their side they never admitted that the returned Baggins was genuine, and they were not on friendly terms with Bilbo ever after. This last quote referring to the Sackville-Bagginses, of course.

Why did Bilbo lie to the Dwarves about the Ring in the first place?
LadyElbereth
10-28-2002, 08:45 AM
Bilbo decided not to tell them about the ring because they (the dwarves)praised him for his skill and they finally had no doubt that he was a first-class burglar.
TolkienGurl
10-28-2002, 09:13 AM
Yeah, he didn't want them to know that he had "outside help." Bilbo wanted the Dwarves to think that it was his skill and intuitiveness that did it. GOOD IDEA LadyElbereth! smilies/biggrin.gif

I can find a place or two where it is said he has a shadow, but no description. On page 99 of my book it says: Suddenly one of the goblins inside shouted: "There is a shadow by the door. Something is outside!" while Biblo is stuck in the door trying to escape from deep under the Misty Mountains. Good question there!

Durelin

Found it! He wanted it because it was a ring of power, and if you slipped that ring on your finger, you were invisible; only in full sunlight could you be seen, and then only by your shadow, and that would be shaky and faint.

I hates Gollum. I hates him. He doesnt' really cheat ON the riddles does he? He never asked an unfair riddle, he was however going to eat Bilbo no matter the riddle game winner.
Durelin
11-27-2002, 08:15 PM
Oh yes he does, and he gets away with it even though it is plain and simple cheating. Gollum's a bad boy!

Ok, I guess I wasn't very specific! I meant:
What was the next major step in their journey after Rivendell?

Next planned step? (as in lake-town I would suppose) or next accidental step? (as in Beorn's house.
TolkienGurl
12-11-2002, 12:19 PM
When you said Misty Mountains you were partially correct. I need a more specific answer.
Ok, here's what I really meant:
Where in the Misty Mountains did Bilbo, the dwarves and Gandalf travel after they left Rivendell? What (not whom) did they encounter?
Not laketown, not Beorn's house.
