Quotes from The Two Towers (or Books 3 and 4 of LOTR.) Who said it, when, and why?
You do not know your danger
Gimli Son Of Gloin

ummm... Farimir said that to Sam and Frodo, who had told him that they were going into Mordor by way of Cirith Ungul?

BTW is this quote from TTT?
Lostgaeriel
05-02-2002, 05:53 PM
For heaven's sake! smilies/rolleyes.gif It's Gandalf to Théoden, at the ruined gate of Orthanc, warning him about getting Merry (& Pippin) started on talking about pipeweed and family history. Gandalf cuts the monologue short so he can ask where Treebeard is. (It's at the end of The Two Towers, Book Three, VIII The Road to Isengard.)

"He stands not alone" said Legolas bending his bow and fitting an arrow with hands quicker than sight, "You would die before your stroke fell"- Quote from Legolas. Book three chapter 2. He said it because a rider had said something to gimli and Legolas was standing up for him.

Gimli Son Of Gloin is whimsical and silly, merlilot...I wouldn't take him very seriously.
I don't know what was so hard about that one quote...just not many people swing by this forum.
If you look at the dates, you'll notice how spontaneous most people visit the quiz/quote forums. Not many come here anyway. They answer or pose a question and forget to check back. It happens all of the time. Many posts get buried and have to wait for someone forging through the archives to get brought back up.

Faramir smiled grimly. 'Then you would grieve to learn that Boromir is dead?'
'I would grieve indeed,' said Frodo. Then catching the look in Faramir's eyes, he faltered. 'Dead?' he said. 'Do you mean that he is dead, and that you knew it? You have been trying to trap me in words, playing with me? Or are you now trying to snare me with a falsehood?'
'I would not snare even an orc with a falsehood,' said Faramir.

This is from The Two Towers, Book Three, Chapter VI, The King of the Golden Hall. Théoden says this in response to the just-released Éomer offering his sword to the king. Háma then answers the king's query.

hee hee! I'm going to be sneaky! You asked where, so I'll tell you! (I just read this part yesterday.)
Pippin is quoting Treebeard (who said 'Tired? Tired?' after Pippin asked if he was tired from whatever he and the other Ents were doing to repay Saruman) while telling Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli of his and Merry's adventures with him. They are in the guardhouse at Isengard.

You had the right person (Treebeard was the original speaker) but the wrong place. So you really did get it right because Manardariel said so. I'm sorry to have confused you! I get confused a lot... smilies/biggrin.gif

That's Gamling speaking to Éomer (& Aragorn) about the wild men of the hills, at Helm's Deep. (Gamling had something in common with Tolkien - he knew ancient languages. He translates the 'bellowing' for Éomer.)
‘Yet dawn is ever the hope of men,’ said Aragorn.
‘But these creatures of Isengard, these half-orcs and goblin-men that the foul craft of Saruman has bred, they will not quail at the sun,’ said Gamling. ‘And neither will the wild men of the hills. Do you not hear their voices?’
‘I hear them,’ said Éomer; ‘but they are only the scream of birds and the bellowing of beasts to my ears.’
‘Yet there are many that cry in the Dunland tongue,’ said Gamling. ‘I know that tongue. It is an ancient speech of men, and once was spoken in many western valleys of the Mark. Hark! They hate us, and they are glad; for our doom seems certain to them. “The king, the king!” they cry. “We will take their king. Death to the Forgoil! Death to the Strawheads! Death to the robbers of the North!” Such names they have for us. Not in half a thousand years have they forgotten their grievance that the lords of Gondor gave the Mark to Eorl the Young and made alliance with him. That old hatred Saruman has inflamed. They are fierce folk when roused. They will not give way now for dusk or dawn, until Théoden is taken, or they themselves are slain.’

It's Gorbag to Shagrat from The Choices of Master Samwise.
'Who cut the cords she'd put round him, Shagrat? Same one as cut the web. Didn't you see that? And who stuck a pin into Her Ladyship? Same one, I reckon. And where is he? Where is he, Shagrat?'
Shagrat made no reply.
'You may well put your thinking cap on, if you've got one. It's no laughing matter. No one, no one has ever stuck a pin in Shelob before, as you should know well enough. There's no grief in that; but think—there’s someone loose hereabouts as is more dangerous than any other damned rebel that ever walked since the bad old times, since the Great Siege. Something has slipped.’

No, no, no. That quote is NOT from The Two Towers - the Voice of Saruman; it's from The Fellowship of the Ring - The Council of Elrond. It is Gandalf quoting himself while reporting his conversation with the traitor Saruman.
By the way, the quote is not
"He who breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom."
but rather
'And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.'

What I meant to say is that I correctly identified the speaker of and to whom and about what the quote was. Granted, I did get the place and time wrong but I was a little confused thinking that it was supposed to be in TTT so I geussed it was at the parley. I probably would not have made this mistake had I tried the book but frankly I never use the book in helping to find a quote or to put up a new quote, everything I do and everything I know about any of these quotes is stored in my ugly, box-shaped head *grin*.
