I couldn't find a thread with The Hobbit quotes on this first page, so I assume there has been awhile since there was one. I've just read The Hobbit for the first time, and I loved it, so I thought I'd start a topic. Anyway, the first quote is rather easy I should think! smilies/smile.gif
What a lot of things you use Good morning for!

That is Beorn saying farewell to Gandalf, Bilbo, Thorin & Co. in Queer Lodgings. But Tolkien (or Bilbo) makes it into a slight 'flashback' - as you can see.....
'The goblins,' Beorn had said, 'will not dare to cross the Great River for a hundred miles north of the Carrock nor to come near my house - it is well protected at night! - but I should ride fast; for if they make their raid soon they will cross the river to the south and scour all the edge of the forest so as to cut you off, and Wargs run swifter than ponies. Still you are safer going north, even though you seem to be going back nearer to their strongholds; for that is what they will least expect, and they will have the longer ride to catch you. Be off now as quick as you may!'

Thanks :)
Next one up:
I'll soon put an end to that!
One of the spiders who wants to eat Bombur - though we've had this before I think.
HerenIstarion

though we've had this before
My apologies. This thread is long, and the Hobbit only a short story (compared to some others of the same authorship, that is). You've got it right, by the way :)
Sorry all I didn't get a notice that this had been replied to. New quote:
I wish
That's a little vague so as a clue it is something that one character in particualr says frequently.
Firefoot
01-21-2005, 06:03 AM
Bilbo says it quite frequently. One example is "I wish Thorin were living, but I am glad we parted in kindness."
Well not the one I was thinking of but OK, your turn.
Firefoot
03-15-2005, 08:11 PM
"There are no safe paths in this part of the world.".
Gandalf to Bilbo and the dwarves as they are about to enter Mirkwood.
Firefoot
03-16-2005, 02:42 PM
Yep.
Ok next one
"then if ever Smaug ought to be napping"
Lostgaeriel
03-16-2005, 05:33 PM
This is Bilbo to Thorin in Inside Information outlining what they should do now that Bilbo has stolen the great two-handled cup from Smaug's hoard and and the dragon has chased them back into the tunnel:
'Well, if you really want my advice, I should say we can do nothing but stay where we are. By day we can no doubt creep out safely enough to take the air. Perhaps before long one or two could be chosen to go back to the store by the river and replenish our supplies. But in the meanwhile everyone ought to be well inside the tunnel by night.
'Now I will make you an offer. I have got my ring and will creep down this very noon - then, if ever, Smaug ought to be napping - and see what he is up to. Perhaps something will turn up. "Every worm has his weak spot," as my father used to say, though I am sure it was not from personal experience.'
Very exact  and of course very correct! Go ahead.
Lostgaeriel
03-18-2005, 10:17 AM
Choosing a quote is difficult - this thread is so long now - and I've only read the book once - a very long time ago.
‘But share and share alike!’
"Indeed I can!" said the wizard. "But share and share alike! You may find you have more needs than you expect."
Gandalf to Bilbo at the place where they turned aside for their nasty adventure with the trolls.
Lostgaeriel
03-19-2005, 09:23 AM
Yes, Kath, that's correct - it's from the last chapter The Last Stage.
Your turn.
I don't do chapters - I get vague memories and skim through the book till I find the bit I had the memory of!
Anyway next one:
"We shall see, we shall see!"
Carrûn
03-21-2005, 06:32 AM
Gandalf to the dwarves before entering Beorn's land.
Carrûn
03-21-2005, 12:17 PM
"Quite a merry gathering! I hope there is something left for the late-comers to eat and drink! What's that? Tea! No thank you! A little red wine, I think, for me..."
Gandalf to Bilbo when he and the dwarves meet at Bag End in An Unexpected Party.
Carrûn
03-21-2005, 02:42 PM
Yep, your turn.
Okay next one:
"Would this be any good?"
Mango of Doom
03-22-2005, 06:25 AM
Is that Bilbo asking about the key to the Trolls cave?
I've lent my book to a friend recently and so cant check it :s
Carrûn
03-22-2005, 12:34 PM
Is that Bilbo asking about the key to the Trolls cave?
I'm pretty sure that's right.
Yes Mango of Doom that's right.
Carrun I will get there eventually, you don't have to answer for me!
Carrûn
03-23-2005, 06:23 AM
Yes Mango of Doom that's right.
Carrun I will get there eventually, you don't have to answer for me!
Take it easy, I wasn't sure myself.
Mango of Doom

"Lucky numbers don't always come off"
At least i think thats the quote... sorry, i should really get my book before answering quotes :(
Found it at last, took long enough!
"Lovely titles!" sneered the dragon, "But lucky number don't always come off."
And so of course it was Smaug to Bilbo.
Mango of Doom
04-02-2005, 03:58 AM

The Elf-warrior
04-05-2005, 07:32 PM
That's correct!
Mango of Doom
04-06-2005, 03:03 AM
"I do hope I put the lids on tight enough"
Don't have my book with me so I'm not sure of the exact place but it's when Bilbo is putting the dwarves in the barrels that are about to be floated down the river as an escape from the halls of the woodelves.
Mango of Doom
04-06-2005, 11:09 AM

Thanks

Sleepy Ranger
04-07-2005, 01:40 PM
PS2 caught up to me, I had too many games to finish, didnt let the pressure get to me. Took them apart one by one. (That is one part of each game at a time). Anyway I doubt anyone here actually cares about my video game exploits so lets just stick to quotes.
All Of Them At Once
Mango of Doom
04-07-2005, 02:09 PM
Is that Bilbo to Gandalf about what he means by "good morning"?
Sleepy Ranger
04-07-2005, 02:18 PM
More or less, your turn :)
Mango of Doom
04-07-2005, 03:24 PM
Never laugh at live dragons...
"Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!"
Bilbo talking to himself after shooting an unfortunate remark at Smaug.
Mango of Doom

Sleepy Ranger

Sleepy Ranger
04-08-2005, 01:58 PM
I mean I did take long now that I look at it, I've done 2 minutes once, back when it was quick fire at quotes, I would answer everything I could but that was like an year ago.
to the edge
2 minutes, lets see someone top that.
"I seem to have got right to the other side of the Misty Mountains, right to the edge of the Land Beyond!"
Bilbo upon escaping the goblins - to himself.
Sleepy Ranger
04-13-2005, 06:07 AM
Its your turn, kid. :)
Kid  whatever.
Quote time:
"while there is a chance!"
Not sure if the exclamation mark is actually there, I lost the page.
Sorry Sleepy I didn't get your record - but you can try to beat your own!
Mango of Doom
04-13-2005, 10:06 AM
"You had better slap your arms and rub your legs and try and help me get the others out while there is still a chance!" Bilbo after having been washed up on shore, to Thorin and the others.
Mango of Doom
04-13-2005, 02:05 PM
"Hold his toes in the fire..."
"Not till he says what he means by lots and none at all," said Bert. "I don't want to have me throat cut in me sleep! Hold his toes in the fire till he talks!"
Bert to William about poor old Bilbo.
Mango of Doom
04-13-2005, 02:48 PM
Correct! ;)
Firefoot
04-13-2005, 03:48 PM
Gandalf to the Dwarves and Bilbo, perhaps? It sounds like the type of cryptic thing he might say...
Insert embarrassed face here as I admit that I have actually lost my quote! I believe it was Bilbo that said it but since I honestly can't find it Firefoot can go.
Mango of Doom
04-14-2005, 11:13 AM
not to try to take his turn from him, but I believe its somewhere when Bilbo is talking to Smaug. Once again, I don't have my book and so can't check, though maybe it will help you remember, Kath.
Yes Mango of Doom thank you you were helpful and also correct! So I guess whoever wants to can post out of you and Firefoot depending on who gets there first!
Firefoot
04-14-2005, 02:54 PM
not to try to take his turn from him I am a her. ;) (Don't worry, you're not the first one...)
But go ahead, Mango, you can have the next shot. Mine was but a guess, and a wrong one at that.
Mango of Doom
04-14-2005, 03:13 PM
Oops, sorry :( I'll take the next quote then ;)
"Up the Bowman and down with moneybags!"
Firefoot
04-14-2005, 03:35 PM
The people of the Lake Town. The bowman is Bard and moneybags is the previous Master.
Mango of Doom

Firefoot
04-15-2005, 03:34 PM
Thanks.We must wait here
Firefoot
05-24-2005, 05:20 PM
Well, I really don't remember where that quote came from so how about another (easier, I think):"Before long I expect we shall all wish our packs heavier, when the food begins to run short."
Mango of Doom
05-25-2005, 02:05 AM
Thorin as the group entered Mirkwood.
Firefoot
05-25-2005, 05:18 AM
Yep. Your go.
Mango of Doom
05-25-2005, 11:40 AM

Mango of Doom
05-25-2005, 03:41 PM
correct :)
Firefoot
05-25-2005, 03:47 PM
Thanks. :) "But I expect they will all come to a bad end"
That's the king of the elves of Mirkwood to himself about the dwarves and Bilbo.
Firefoot
05-25-2005, 04:18 PM
You bet.
Sorry this has taken quite so long! Computer problems and lack of memory combined are not a good mix!
Anyhow next quote:
his rivers golden run!
Mango of Doom
06-15-2005, 08:28 AM
The people of Esgaroth just before Smaug attacks, speaking of Thorin.
