Marileangorifurnimaluim

This thread is begun in honor of the funniest nickname I've seen on the Downs (and my first nomination).. drumroll please:

The Saucepan Man.

I think burrahobbit is a winner!

Lindolirian
01-12-2003, 07:35 PM
Well, since you are too nice to nominate yourself, I'll do it for you, since you have the coolest name: Marileangorifurnimaluim!!! and it so long too....

Beren87
01-12-2003, 07:43 PM
That's why we call her Maril smilies/wink.gif

I would like to nominate Squatter of Amon Rudh, and I think it's quite obvious why.

Gorwingel
01-12-2003, 08:02 PM
I would have to say the best one is, I think this one person with the nickname of Fuzzy Purple Chainsaw (I think, please correct me if I am wrong) and another good one is Doug* Platypus (I just enjoy it)

Beren87
01-12-2003, 08:25 PM
OH, and another! Phil the Balrog, when I first heard that I nearly fell off my chair laughing so hard.

Pallando B.C
01-12-2003, 08:37 PM
I've always though Child of the 7th Age was original.

The Saucepan Man
01-12-2003, 09:15 PM
Maril (if I may call you that), I am honoured to be nominated. smilies/smile.gif

There are so many great nicknames here, I shall have to ponder awhile and return anon.

Tigerlily Gamgee
01-12-2003, 10:20 PM
I enjoy Skippy the Nazgul.

It has been far too long since MrOogieBoogieMan blessed the forum with the hilarity of his presence.

Susan Delgado
01-12-2003, 11:34 PM
I was also going to mention Skippy the Nazgul smilies/smile.gif

Bill Ferny
01-12-2003, 11:49 PM
Bill Ferny... Kiss my butt, forum.

No, seriously, Saucepan Man is the Man, though Squater was the first nick on the forum to draw a smile to my face.

Maikadilwen
01-13-2003, 04:49 AM
Well, I've encountered a few I find rather funny.
Such as: willkill4food , Deathwail, kuckimonster, NicktheOrc, Pukelman, Keneldil the Polka-dot and EnglishCountrySide.

You just can't help but smile. smilies/smile.gif

Oh, you comedians. Must every nick be a jest??

Kalimac is one of the finest nicks I've seen. It's a character homage, but not a blatant or overused one. And it contains neither the word "Orly" nor the word "hot". Shine on you crazy Candle.

Also, big ups to the sheer magnificence, power and terror that the name The Barrow Wight conveys on a site called the Barrow Downs. Even with that duck thingy.

Alkanoonion

There is a certain boldness to calling oneself Bill Ferny that I admire. I was genuinely taken aback when I first spotted it. I'm waiting for someone to call themselves Otho Sackville-Baggins next.

I was thinking of Kalimac, too.

I considered nominating The Barrow-Wight, but I feared the red lipstick marks on his bum might cause him trouble at home. smilies/wink.gif

Thanks for the Nomination, by the way. I'd take the prize for the most unpronouceable nick, perhaps.

-Maril

01-13-2003, 05:02 PM
NicktheOrc, Phil the Balrog, and Skippy the Nazgul (heehee) are all really good, but my first vote would have to be for Squatter of Amon Rudh.

I recently saw (an have been speaking to) an Armani_Elf who, quite actually, had no idea that was what they called Orlando Bloom until after that was his screenname. I thought that was pretty coincidental. His middle name, apparently, is Armani (good choice by his parents, I must say), so that's how it figures in. That is why I nominate him: for the sheer brilliance of coincidence.

EDIT: Ooo: happy 1800th post to me...just noticed that...

Thank you, mein Schatzchen. If you're ever in close proximity to Duke University any time during the school year, stop by, and we will go only to the best parties.

Estelyn Telcontar and Tigerlily Gamgee are two names that just sing.

tom bombariffic makes me smile.

And I also like Mornie Alantië because it's pretty and I liked that part of the song. Funny thing is I can't remember ever reading a post by her. I've just seen the name among the members online.

Then there was Tower of Moon and Shadow. smilies/eek.gif

Oh dear, Saucepan Man, call the plumber! Your toilet is backing up.

Oh dear, Saucepan Man, call the plumber! Your toilet is backing up.

smilies/eek.gif Probably the result of too many postings!

Bach to the subject at hand, I saw the name
ElvenSunSet9 earlier today, which I kind of like. It puts me in mind of a series of modern paitings in a gallery themed on Elven Sunsets of which this is #9. Or perhaps an experimental track by John Lennon fit only to be tacked to the end of the White Album.

Since the Board is Tolkien dedicated, I'd be glad to nominate ppl with elvish names (as well as second all listed above) (and not randomly generated by software of some sort, but those bearing some meaning) Here it goes:

Mithadan (Grey Man)

Durelen (Dark Star)

Eruhen (God Child)

lindil (Lover of Song)

Aiwendil (Lover of small birds)

Alkanoonion (The Glorious One (?))

latando angaina (One who opens [iron] Gate)

(and don't tell me that the latter one is because I was using this account myself at a time - the choice of the name was unaffected by me, even though it was I who lured the owner into BD)

The owners of the nicks listed will of course excuse my crude translations (and revelation of their meaning, otherwise obscure to commoners smilies/tongue.gif) and make required alterations (if any)

Apart from above category I would be glad to nominate Saulotus, obviously meaningful name meaning of which is obscure to anyone expect the bearer

and selfsame

Bob Wehadababyitsaboy

just because

in addition to Mr.Underhill (my compliments)

there are tons of others worth nominating, but that's all I can recall at one go. I'll come in later if ... etc etc

Sincerely,

LePetitChoux

Two people voted for me! Wow! don't know what to say! smilies/biggrin.gif
I'll vote: I love Orli Bloom...so creative and original.

And, on a more serious note, I like burrahobbit, and Alkanoonion. They have nice Rings to them (haha, get it? Nice rings on a Tolkien site? Oh, forget it) smilies/smile.gif

I like so many names, it's hard to remember them all!

I'd like to second "Child of the Seventh Age", for numerous reasons: for one, it's the only nick that sent me to the letters to research its meaning; it also inspired chapters of fanfiction; and it's the most wistful homage to Tolkien's mythos that I've seen.

And she (the seventh age hobbit) is pretty cool, too.

I considered nominating The Barrow-Wight, but I feared the red lipstick marks on his bum might cause him trouble at home.

Sweet Maril.

Maril gets my vote as well, even if I still have trouble saying it. Down, you pesky trout, shouldnt be flying around, down...

Littlemanpoet, after I read Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry, this has always reminded of the sweetest character.

Suicidal elf chick.
Nicktheorc.
Regis- a new member, but with such a regal name.

A dull name from the Archers corner. Ho hum.

I have quite a few favourite PTs though.

I've been nominated? That's a bit of a surprise. For my part, I've always been fond of the nicknames "Amanaduial the archer" and "Marileangorifurnimaluim" (has anyone tried to work out what it means?). "Durelen", "Mr. Underhill" and our inestimable "Squatter of Amon Rudh" are also among my favorites. Of course, for sheer truthfulness "Nonesuch" can't be beaten.

Wow...somehow I missed this thread until now. Thank you for the nominations, Doug and Maril - I'm flattered smilies/smile.gif.

I tend to like the names which are a little out of the way and whose meanings aren't immediately obvious ... which would be about 99% of the names here...

LUSH: Because the word brings a whole host of images to mind at once, all of them vivid smilies/smile.gif.

MARILEANGORIFURNIMALUIM (did I spell that right?): Because it's so friggin' long, it MUST mean something deeply important.

DOUG*PLATYPUS: Again, the reference is mysterious enough that there must be some heavy significance behind it. Doug, where does the platypus come from?

THE SAUCEPAN MAN: Just because it sounds cool.

BILL FERNY: As someone said before, just because it takes chutzpah to call yourself that. I'm still waiting to see someone sign up as "Slant-eyed Southerner".

RAEFINDEL: For having to courage to make a personal coinage in Elvish.

HERENISTARION: Just because it sounds cool.

And quite a few more that are on the tip of my tongue (or fingers) but which I can't quite remember right now...

What is Balin999 member number ... 13?

Balin999
02-20-2003, 12:45 PM
hey that was not done on purpose! smilies/smile.gif
of course, I don't mind having the member number 666 as Sauron999, but I didn'T even notice until someone told me. Nevertheless I think it's cool smilies/biggrin.gif
With Balin999 I was Member Number 3 or 5, but it has somehow risen to 61 and the same was the case with burrahobbit. They changed the numbers for some reason. (for the mods, I think)

I'd like to add a nomination if I may.

Lady Aerowen has always impressed me, though I have not encounted her on the forum for quite some time now. Now I don't know that the name was created before the release of the films (or even that the ramble that follows is in anyway significant), if it was then it is an odd coincidence that the Lady Aerowen should be a play on the lady Arwen, and that she was portrayed by a certain very famous rock stars daughter, no? smilies/wink.gif

Hm, after your description, I'm not a beast (whew).

You’re not planning on taking over the world and enslaving the free peoples are you? Some people would call that a mad idea, some wouldn’t. All kidding aside, you are right, beasts don’t always look beastly and some who look beastly are quite often very nice, (not that I know any with hooves of course).

2. burrahobbit
3. Lush

And there are too many more to add. But I think the awards for the most unpronouncable nick go to Maril as well as the award for most syllables. smilies/wink.gif

However, I would like to nominate myself for the strangest spelling. Sadbh is a name, and is pronouncable, just very confusing. smilies/smile.gif

2) Nevfeniel: Something about it charms me. *shrug*

3) Sharku: smilies/biggrin.gif Although I know this is certainly not the meaning of his name, it reminds me of a cool shark wearing sunglasses and giving a thumbs up. Can't beat that!

4) gollum*elf*pup: It's always made me grin. smilies/biggrin.gif

5) Kalimac: This name is great. It makes me picture a wise British scholar, perched atop a towering pile of books, his intelligent eyes twinkling. smilies/smile.gif

I like GaladrieloftheOlden's name, it has a ring to it.

Also Estelyn Telcontar- it gets in it's Aragorn references without using the word Aragorn.

I also do enjoy Mithadan's name. It seems like it ought to be a character tribute, because it seems like the kind of elvish name Tolkien would have acually used.

The Saucepan Man is from The Faraway Tree, isnt he? I like that name just because it reminds me of the book title, and it is such a dreamy book title...

A few others...

Mithadan- it reminds me of a character in a book I read, who was a pretty cool character, albeit an evil one. But hey, they're often the best. Well, either that or annoying.

Glingleglingleglinglefairy- even if I can't pronounce it! Its generally a cool name, and its a character in one of the Discworld books, books which are, although on a slightly different slant, on the same level as LotR in my opinion.

Childlike Empress- I just like it. Plus, it sounds like it could have great potential for an RPG character.

Marileangorifurnimaluim- splendid in its unpronouncibility!

Gorothlammothiel- because it shortens to Moth. (sorry, sorry...) smilies/biggrin.gif

It seemed like a good idea at the time- a fairly new member, I think, and I'm not entirely sure of the spacing. Its just cool!

The guy who be short- short people unite! Plus it sounds slightly leprecaun-esque...

When you do translate some of the elvish sounding names, they're quite nice, and quite thoughtful, even if they have only bee slung together randomly from a name generator, like my own.

It means "sharp/piercing" which is why so many people are convinced it's refering to my tongue.... smilies/wink.gif

Tinuviel Took (Elf hobbit. Cool)
Tinuviel the Nightengale (A bit redundant, but still cool)

Actually, the Barrow Wight has been mentioned, but that's ok. I do things like that too. smilies/smile.gif

I nominate, burrahobit, Orual, the Barrow Wight, The Saucepan Man, Tar-palantir, Helkahothion, HerenIstarion, LePetitChoux, Gwaihir the Windlord, Iarwain -who could forget that one? not me-, littlemanpoet, Child of the 7th Age, Diamond18 cheesemaster, the witch king, Túroch, and Theoric Windcaller.

Well, that's a lot, but I like all those nicks. However, I think that the best one has to be MLD-Grounds-Keeper-Willie. Whoever that person is must be really smart, and I'm sure he's soooo cool, I mean, just look at his nick, it's the best handsdown, who could argue with that? (that was a rhetorical question, it needs no answer, no one can argue).... smilies/wink.gif

I am surprised no one has mentioned davem; it has quite a subtle elegance to it when you say it out loud (unless it is meant to be pronounced "Dave M" - I'm not entirely sure).

On a slightly different note, I would like to nominate Tuor Turambar, Cursed by the Valar, for obvious reasons.

I secretly envy Mister Underhill his moniker and his erudition.

I find myself wondering where Heren Istarion came from (the name, not the man.)

Child of the Seventh Age strikes me as the most canonically clever of all nicks. Ever.

And for sheer mystery, Mithadan, whoever he really is. (Drat him.)

Others I wonder about often:

Orual
Sharku (that took guts, or a sense of irony, or both)
the various manifestations of Sauron (why?)
ditto the various Nazguls

"I find myself wondering where Heren Istarion came from (the name, not the man.)"

If you mean where in Middle-earth it came from in, I have your answer: it is the name of the order of the Istari. If you meant how H-I chose the name... well, he probably just chose it because it sounds cool. :smokin:

I envy the cleverness of The Squatter of Amon Rudh. The name is original & pleasant to say, & the icing on the cake is his location, 'Bar-en-Danwedh', which is synonymous with Amon Rudh while at the same time closely resembling the sound of 'Barrow-downs.' My hat is off.

HerenIstarion
06-01-2004, 01:48 AM
There is a whole boiling soup of reasons. To quote myself from elsewhere (http://69.51.5.41/showpost.php?p=126915&postcount=74):

as per my [alas un]humble person, I beat you all. (yes, even you, burra) For I'm 5 persons at once, and it suits me well. I'm wise like 5 wizards, but only 1/5 of me is working properly, one 1/5 is careless, 2/5 are straying no one knows were, and 1/5 is treacherous. The case for medical study, somehow

I were Tar-Ancalime on BD forum for one day, for I liked her much, yet than it dawned onto me I was mistaken for a lady, which I'm not, and having tried to register as Olorin, which was already taken, I've decided to express my (than obvious, if now less so) schizophrenia into a nickname

here we are, with Order of Wizards all in my head

(It is to be mentioned that Gandalf is one of my favourites, besides Fatty Bolger, that is). But there is a load of Gandalfs around, and HerenIstarion of course, sounds cool, as indicated :D

BTW, there is a new Tar-Ancalime (http://69.51.5.41/member.php?u=3760) around BD now. Many cheers and kudos to her (that is, if she is not, in fact, he, as I was back in September 2000 for a day) I remember being welcomed by BW with words like 'she is scholarly type', that was funny. Now the same goes for new Tar-Ancalime too - she is scholarly type too, or so I figured :)

Another strange thing just noticed - whenever Mithadan's mystic pseudonym is discussed, I inevitably come out (withing proximity of three posts) with explanations concerning my own (look here (http://69.51.5.41/showpost.php?p=65724&postcount=242)) There are no chance meetings, eh? Probably one day Mith will crack up and give away the secret of his name. I crave to learn it, I do.

PS

I envy the cleverness of The Squatter of Amon Rudh. The name is original & pleasant to say, & the icing on the cake is his location, 'Bar-en-Danwedh', which is synonymous with Amon Rudh while at the same time closely resembling the sound of 'Barrow-downs.' My hat is off.

HI - do you seriously expect this forum to tolerate all your 5 different alter egos? As we all know, one of you is enough! :D Sticking to HI was ok though, it's got a fine ring to it. Nice pick!

well, I only read the last two pages, sorry, no time!
burrahobbit,Lush,Estelyn Telcontar, Squatter of Amon Rudhwere already mentioned...

Some new ones I like off the top of my head: The Perky Ent , Sleepy Ranger- cracked me up the first time I saw it :D; also I like the guy who would be short, and there was once someone (I haven't seen him for a while, though) whose nick was The Rip Designs Dude, and his hobbit name in the ME Name Generator was Pippin Took - how cool is that? Of course he boasted of it all over ME Mirth - or was it Novices and Newcomers?

But seriously now - Pink Viggo? eh...

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh
06-07-2004, 06:44 AM
the icing on the cake is his location, 'Bar-en-Danwedh', which is synonymous with Amon Rudh while at the same time closely resembling the sound of 'Barrow-downs.' Does it really? Well, we live and learn. Actually I chose that location because it's where my Beleriandic alter-ego lives, but I'm always glad to get credit where none's due. :smokin:
