The image of 'Sam' by Micahel Kaluta on the main page is actually Merry.
Image from Rolozo (http://img-fan.theonering.net/rolozo/images/kaluta/merry.jpg)
The actual title is 'Meriadoc The Magnificent and The Children of Samwise Hamfast'

Ah - I see what you mean! He has the shield of Rohan. Good call!

At least its a relative of his. smilies/smile.gif And Sam did have lots of kids, so unless you know the title of the picture, it can substitute for Sam well enough. Thanks for pointing the error out, but I think I'll keep it like it is. I couldn't find a lot of pictures of Sam without Frodo, so this one will continue to represent him for the time being.

He's also very big (compared to the young 'uns) unless that's just me.

I just find that picture plain scary.
But maybe that's just me... smilies/rolleyes.gif
Still, it's not very nice of you to scare me like that, BW. smilies/wink.gif

Oh, no, Maika. It scared me too. It looks like Sam/Merry is going to EAT those little kids.

The kids do look like the next meal. And why are they wearing blue jeans?

I'm pretty scary myself, and it terrified me smilies/evil.gif
**Going on a massive internet search for non-scary Sam pics**

But, Judge Simon, as the BW said, it's hard to find Sam pictures without Frodo in them too. If you can find any, send the BW the link so we can hopefully get rid of the cannibal picture.

It takes me months to change the theme, so imagine how long it may take if someone discovers new Sam pics to add to the scene. It could be wasted effort :/

Hullo dragoneyes and Arwen Imladris:
There's a logical explanation for Merry's larger size actually, but it makes one wonder how much of that Ent draught he actually drank originally, and whether he's got any more of that potion stashed away somewhere. smilies/smile.gif
On another note, I actually had no idea that this large guy was supposed to be either Sam or Merry ... I thought it was some modern art representation of one of the Big Folk's children playing with Hobbit dolls or something. At least now the mystery is solved, so all's well as end's better. smilies/smile.gif

Hmm, I guess we'll just stay scared, then...
I label all horror movies "comedy" (I truly adore Pinhead, but dang he cracks me up), and then I get scared over Sam/Merry?
It's the end of the world as we know it! smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif
Judge Simon I like the last line in your sig. It's cute.

I think Barrow Wight is on to something here.
I couldn't find a lot of pictures of Sam without Frodo, so this one will continue to represent him for the time being.
Despite the vast assortment of Tolkien art, there are certainly people, things, and places that remain vastly under-represented.
After spending some time searching the Rolozo, Edoras, and Luthien galleries, I couldn't find a picture of Sam as the Ringbearer--certainly a signficant point, nor of Sam discarding his pans. Nor of Sam and Rosie. Probably even more surprising is that I couldn't find a picture of Sam planting the saplings with the dust of Galadriel's gift nor of him planting the silver nut in the Party Field. Surely this action would be important enough to deserve a painting.
Anyone up for analyzing the artwork for its omissions, inclusions, and repetitions? I wonder if that would tell us anything about Tolkien or just about the artists. For instance, do Tolkien's evocative descriptions inspire the artwork or does the plot?
Certainly given the dearth of Sam pictures which BW has uncovered, it would appear that no artist has picked up on that important point from Letter 93 which is quoted in the theme, that Sam is "the most closely drawn character, the successor to Bilbo ... the genuine hobbit."

ahh.. yes, Merry drank entdraught. that's why he's so big.. Lol, that picture scared me to..
Personally I think it maybe could be a good idea to let people know in advance what next theme would be and ask them to produce fan art. After all, there are people good at painting out there and if there is a topic with no good pictures of, why not have a mini-competition or something and let people send in their fan art. I think that for many people just their names showing up on the first page of the BarrowDowns should be enough of a reward. Hhhmm.. you don't have to mind me or my post. I really isn't any kind of authority on the subject. :Þ
