This might have been done before, but I was wondering if people have roleplayed with any really great characters. Please feel free to write a page explaining why!

Oh, my goodness... there are so many that I've played or attempted to play, it's hard to decide. I'd have to say my favorite since the change in the RPG section is Ru-Sahn, an Easterling weaponsmith with an 'elusive past' which I still haven't revealed in full, who plays in the "Kidnapped!" RPG in Rohan. Before the change, my favorite character was Ardo Baggins, a hobbit in "The Gathering-In: The Quest of the 24 Messengers," an RPG that was unfortunately never finished. He was an admirable Fallohide, one of the first to take on a surname and settle in Buckland in the Shire. I really love to play hobbits; I wish there was more opportunity to do so.

I love hobbits too. I have to say that I have two which are my favourite (don't make me choose between them, please) Gaddy Boffin and Hal Cotton, I'm still playing them in 'The Long Winter' but that's ending soon smilies/frown.gif. They're both so hobbitish, they're so fun to play.

I've never had so much fun playing my character Raye from The Shadows of Umbra RPG. She kills, she steals, she does every terrible thing you could imagine. Almost all the other characters hate her, but Raye cares not. Ooh, it's so fun to play evil! smilies/evil.gif

I agree, Brinniel. It's even more fun, though, to play mysterious, evil people... smilies/evil.gif

From the Shire...
Robin Brandybuck and Dinodas Green, two hobbits who have been friends since childhood. One of their many adventures is told in The Long Winter RPG.

From Rohan...
Culoth, my only character there thus far, but most likely to be my favorite for all time. She's a girl from Rohan (lives there, not posted about in the forum smilies/wink.gif), and so far is only in the White Horse, though she may end up in a game some time soon!

I had an idea for this thread, and, if Durelin approves, I think it would be interesting for people to say who their favorite RPG character that is not theirs, as well as their own. What do you think, Durelin?

Well, I play Samwise Gamgee in the Hobbit's Gift, so I have to say that he's my favorite. smilies/biggrin.gif But of those that I've come up with, I think I like Rie the best--Talmérië, at the Green Dragon. I haven't found an RPG for her yet, but her day will come. She's independent, argumentative, stubborn, and in many other ways quite a bit like me, but she's also brave and kind. (Well, I hope that's like me, but without bragging I can't expound on how much those aspects of her personality resemble me.) Plus she has red hair! How cool is that? I've always wanted red hair. And a twin! She has a twin! Oh yes. I love my Rie.

Not that I don't love my other characters, too...Mel and Arethin, Airan and Éorlan...but honestly, Rie was my first RPG character and I'm quite taken with her.

Nuru, I think that's a cool idea. If Durelin O-K's it I'll come back and talk about Don! smilies/cool.gif

smilies/evil.gif My favorite of mine would have to be Frain, an engineering Dwarf from the Lonely Mountain. He was pretty dern cool. I used him in the An Audience With the King Rpg, but recently I used the dust-gathering character to introduce my 'Search for the Book' Rpg in Rohan to the residents of the White Horse.

Of course, I like all my characters. Aislan (Gondor), Jemel And Aniram (Rohan) , Jadae (Rohan), Rolan (The Shire) , and Jerika (the Shire)...and Frain Thaneson.

I guess I'd have to say I'm most like all my characters. Jadae is independant, but has good friends. Jemel is dependable and Aniram is brave. Frain is stubborn but willing to learn. Jerika wants to prove herself. Aislan cares a lot for animals. Rolan...well, I haven't gotten much of a chance to play Rolan yet, but he's not much like me at all. He is quiet, introvert, and keeps his opinions to himself (Come on, anyone could tell you I'm not like that!). Oh well, I suppose it's not too much of a challenge playing a trait you don't associate with.

And of course, I have a 'thing' for J names. Expect more J characters soon. smilies/evil.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Orual, I like Rie, too! She's a wonderful character, and I love how you write about her. Of course, you played up to that falling-off-the-rafters bit I started with Tarondo really well - I got such a kick out of it! And then you referred to it again with the roof-repairs. Just terrific. I'd love to interact with you again some time; just let me get some school under control. smilies/biggrin.gif

Well, if I'm to talk about RP characters from the Green Dragon, Don would definitely be up in first with Robin and Dinodas!

Now, Rie. Rie is great. She and Don have had some great times together, haven't they, Orual? Red hair! I wanted red hair, too, but now I'm contented with my own. I still do love red hair, though, and I even did something horrible in the fan fiction I'm writing about a girl from Rohan (the one and only Culoth, for all who are at the White Horse)... I made her hair be slightly red.

Believe it or not, Don is much like me. I'm very stubborn, but I can be pretty friendly if I want to (though my friendliness is covered by shyness, not rudeness smilies/wink.gif). I don't have a twin, unfortunately (I've always wanted one of those as well, and wish I had got one!).

I could talk about my RPCs (Role Playing Characters) all day, but if Durelin accepts my idea, there are many RPCs I could talk about that aren't mine.

Of my own RPCs, here's an official list...

The Shire
1st- Robin Brandybuck, Dinodas Green, & Donnamira (Don)
2nd- Nurumaiel
3rd- Celebgaladhgwend
4th- Primrose Tussock & Bowman Proudfoot

I think those are the only characters I've really played so far. I've yet to actually start 'playing' Aragorn in Holiday in the Sun.

I really enjoyed my character Dineniel from the many-named Blue Sky, Night Thunder RPG, she was a fairly different character from the ones I normally play and to top it of I was RPGing with some other excellent characters.

Rimbaud

I have become attached to each of the few characters I've played here. The first, despite the 'train-wreck' ( smilies/smile.gif Birdie) of an RPG, was an aged monkey, of very great wisdom, and I enjoyed that immensely. The most interesting perhaps is Guthrin, on the Rohan RPG; he is not of genesis mine, I picked him up at around the time of Rohan's second life. Flawed, sporadically and spontaneously heroic, soon to be dead; all good fun indeed.

It strikes me that to write a Tolkien-true role-play, you have to invest as much care in the creation (if not more) than the 'source' author. If you do not care for your character (and they do not have to be feelings of love, I think it is perfectly sensible to play or write a character that repulses you), then perhaps you should not be writing about that character at all.

I truly enjoy playing my Arawyn. You haven't seen much of her, for I haven't been on in awhile. And I seem to catch the RPG's a wee bit late.
Also, I play a hobbit named Carie. I have never played a hobbit before coming here, and I must say, it is enjoyable to try something new!

Like Rimbaud, the first character I played was on the Rohan RPG, taken over after being deserted by his creator. Though I saved Taradan from his second near-death, I haven’t become attached to him, perhaps because he, like most of the characters on that RPG, is doomed in the end. (And the story has moved too slowly for much emotional involvement.)

I have grown very attached to Merisuwyniel, the character that I am playing on my own RPG, ‘The Revenge of the Entish Bow’. Though I created her to be a spoof on a typical Mary Sue heroine, I find myself taking her increasingly seriously despite the humorous nature of the story. In a very subtle way, she is becoming a bit of an alter ego for me.

Interestingly, though I did not choose my nick with the idea of her being a character, Estelyn has turned into one as well – first on the party threads, then later in visiting the Seventh Star Inn and participating in the mini-RPG ‘The Saving of the Seventh Star’. I hope that the adventures of the princess, Head Loremistress of the Library of Minas Anor in the Fourth Age, will continue.

My favorite would be Awrygan, the outcast ranger who I used on some other sites & have begun using here. I enjoyed developing the character, plus I can identify with a lot of his traits which makes the writing more enjoyable.

A close second would be Narello, the small boy who I originally developed as a way to see more of Awrygan's character but ended up growing beyond that; he's only been in the Green Dragon as of yet but I'm definately going to use him some day.

...one of my first RPG characters was a little short fat man I called "Tubbie" but that's a different story. smilies/biggrin.gif

Ask not what favourite character, but why the character.

Unlike Estelyn, I did pick my nick and nick identity with care, although that identity has developed in interesting ways throughout the various games I've participated in.

I do not particularly identify with any character or race in Middle Earth and I wanted a nick that would be unique, original. I choose finally to be Goldberry's daughter, and this ghosted verse accompanied Bethberry's first appearance on another forum:

By that pool long ago
I bid a sad farewell,
To wander wide and far ahome.
I seek my mother's gladsome songs
throughout this Middle Earth.
Her voice untimely silenced be,
Yet still can mortal heart set free:
'O wind on the waterfall and the leaves' laughter,'
May the pure clear River spirit
Mellow time's disaster.

It ticks me off that Goldberry just disappears from the evening discussions and the book; even when Gandalf longs to return to the House of Bombadil, it is Tom he mentions, not Goldberry. Thus Bethberry goes forth searching outside that limited place. I tend to look for what is absent in LOTR.

I am uncomfortable with the fact that every sanctuary in Middle Earth--the Old Forest, Rivendell, Lothlorien, the Girdle of Melian, even The Shire itself, is a gated community. It implies to me segregation, as if good can only be good if isolated or protected from the world. It also sets The Other up as beyond the pale.

I chose the Old Forest because it seems to me to be the only sanctuary that is truly fairy, as Tolkien explored that idea in "On Fairy-Stories", that is, both good and perilous. Having grown up on the edge of the temporal rain forests of British Columbia, Canada might have something to do with it too. smilies/wink.gif

My first Tolkien RPG character was a hobbit, Esmerelda Hamwich of Buckleberry Fern, who presided over a summer Hobbiton garden party where dancing, mirth, poetry and feasting held forth on a flagstone patio outside the smial--pretty much standard fare, but it allowed for lyricism. This was long ago on a forum not even Tolkien. Esmerelda's made an appearance or two here at the Downs, in "On Patrol."

I have also played "Big-hearted Bertha", a kind of Coronation Street barmaid, in a spoof of LOTR on another site, called "In Search of Spandalf." Utterly wacky that one, its wackiness in part limiting a clear plotline, but fun. "Malice", a brat, made her appearance there, too, and it was delicious to be a brat, so unlike Bethberry.

"Saladriel" on Estelyn's "Revenge of the Entish Bow" marked a real change in writing style for me. Interesting, where parody takes one. And I like the challenge of writing as a crow for My Crow Management. I wanted Pip'kha to be a secondary character, a youngster who grows up suddenly, but he, too, seems to have assumed at least partially the role of a healer, lol.

I have done cameos on the Rohan RPG, as an Ent, where I wrote some Entish, played a male, and wrote a fatherly/daughterly scene, something no other game had given me the opportunity to do. It also allowed me to introduce some lyricism or fairy elements in a game that is predominantly cleared-eyed realism. Two other characters for Rohan, Æelfritha and Cadfæl, have much intellectual and emotional thought invested in them and I would like to see Rohan survive well and strongly so I can introduce them, but I won't if the game will not revive. I'll stay Ulfwine there.

I would concur with Rimbaud, that the success of a character depends as much on the care in the initial thought and creation as in the actual writing of the game.

Bethberry

Edit: Pio's post reminded me that I forgot one game, Birdie's "The Gathering-In", where I played the Stoor Hob Heathertoes and would have played an ancestor of Gollem had the game continued. In light of our new games, perhaps it is interesting that I gave Birdie this character description:

What have we got in our mindses?
Birdie wants to know.
Askses uss. Askses uss.
Sss Sss Sss.
...
Ancestors we be
of those nastiesss.
...
and me takeses Deagol.

I'm very fond of both my characters in "The Revenge of the Entish Bow", the only characters I've played.

Vogonwë Brownbark is a lovable doofous, often clueless but good-natured (if a little conceited about his poetry). He's half-elven, half-human, but a lot more man than elf. Through him I let loose my wild and terrible doggerel, no holds barred, no rules followed. It's a total blast.

Pimpiowyn Took is a half-hobbbit, half-woman, and I have fun playing with the dual nature that her mixed race creates. Like Estelyn and Merisu, Pimpi has become an alter-ego for me, a little. Not that I eat nearly as much, but basically I am a hobbit with a wild side. But of course she's a lot cuter than me so I find her very endearing.

Favorite character: From "The Gathering In"

Name: Camlost

Age: 7 years

Race: Corvus brachyrhynchos (common crow)

Personality: Gregarious, but wary, as he is often mistaken for a crebain. Intelligent, curious, and given to taking small items which strike his fancy. Was once captive in his youth, and lost one foot to the family dog. Can talk.

Weapons: Brain; swift flight; sharp, strong beak; wicked sense of humor

Why my favorite: A no holds barred sort of creature, with a mild disdain for the mental abilities of the two-leggeds.

Second favorite: From "Wolf Run"

Carchmoroth - Warg

Fierce, intelligent, a tactician in his approach to hunting prey and engaging in battle. Yellow eyed, silver backed grey, 200 lbs, lean, well muscled, bears a notched right ear from an unfortunate encounter with a sheep dog.

Taught to speak by an Elf he once detained and then devoured.

Given to reciting the verses concerning Carcharoth, from the 'Lay of Leithian' to captive audiences.

Again, I like him because he has a sneering contempt for self-important two-leggeds.

I think it would be interesting for people to say who their favorite RPG character that is not theirs, as well as their own.
What a novel idea!

My favourite RPG character on the Downs (bearing in mind I am in some ways still a newbie) is Radagast!! from the Blue Mountains RPG. He might be a little out of character for the whiny little wizard from the books, but he is so cool! Very well written character, kudos to whoever his writer/manager is.

Another of my favourites is Olo Proudfoot from The Hobbit's Gift, managed by Eruantalon. But partly because he is the uncle of my own character Biffo, and they interact quite well. Cami from the Star is fantastic, as well. Keep up the good work, everyone!

I'd have to say my favorite characters are Lord Earnur Etceteron and his dread sword Wylkynsion. This introduction had me laughing out loud in my computer chair: (a very small slice for you)

Meanwhile, astride the great Lord of horses, and blissfully unaware of his rebellious thoughts, Earnur himself was occupying his manly hands with the manly deed of manfully smoking his manly ebony pipe. Between manly puffs, he would pause to blow smoke rings of great intricacy and beauty, although of a deeply masculine and heroic fashion. Reaching back into one of his inky saddlebags, he extracted a blacked silver flask of Elven make, and took from it a manly swig of whatever manly spirit was to be found therein, before replacing it neatly with a single flick of his manly wrist.

Kudos to Squatter of Amon Rudh, the creator of this manfully manly "Miruvor-sodden fool".

It wouldn't do Wylkynsion justice to cut out a slice of his introduction. You know where to find it. smilies/wink.gif

Meeting other peoples' characters, I find, is a lot like meeting new people, and I love to see new aspects of each person or new reflections of their creativity in each new character they write. Of course, Rie loves Don and so do I--if she's a lot like you, Nuru, then you and I have a lot in common! Stubborn to a fault. A lot like Rie. And Tarondo's such a gentleman, catching falling ladies when they need it. smilies/wink.gif I love Cami, too--both as an adult and as a child.

Doug and Orual,

Thank you from Cami.

I'll have to take a close look at Radagast in Blue Mountains. I am intending to play Radagast in another RPG that we will set up in the late spring.

My Radagast will have definite bumbling tendencies, a bit like T. H. White's Merlin.

Of course, the fact was that Rie didn't fall until my post...oh well. Details, schmetails.

Besides, it livens up the action so much when ladies start falling from the skies! smilies/biggrin.gif

Sorry it seems I forgot this thread. To Nurumaiel's question, yeah, that's a good idea.

Um, I've thought about my favorite RPG character I played as, and I just can't decide which one! I think they all came out a little different than I originally wanted, but they've worked out. I've only played one RPG and am in the middle of another one, so I can't say much!

Oh, Rie had it coming. smilies/biggrin.gif Anyway, she needed to be shown a real gentleman...she certainly grew up with few enough! (Oh, I shouldn't say that, Talômi's a gentleman. But she hardly noticed...he was her twin, after all, and she was rather the more vivacious one.)

One character that I forgot to mention was TheWhiteLady's Laurie. I haven't interacted with her, but I've carefully watched her posts. TWL (if I may call her TWL) is a very good writer, and I really like Laurie. (Oh, Eru, here I go again, expanding my "list of people to interact with"...Rie's never going to leave the Dragon, never ever. She'll be too busy talking to people.)

One of my favorite characters (that I have not played) is Arethin from the newer "Search For the Book." He's the sweetest guy I've ever seen, and he's a dreamer who loves all sorts of legends and stories, and from what I've seen is courageous, having to leave his mum and his younger brother behind while he goes on the quest, and he doesn't cower when people tease him for being a fan of fairy tales. GO ARETHIN!

Another one that I barely got a chance to play at all that I just remembered was Morithil, an elf slave who escaped from Mordor and stumbled upon a group of travellers. I can't even remember the name of the RPG because it was so short-lived.

My favorite characters that I played were Fina and Ceo, the hobbit twins in "The Gathering In". And I still have fond memories of Corvu the Crow in "Simian Shadow". (My very first RPG.)

As for other favorite players, I salute the crew of the Lonely Star, Child, Pio, Mith, Mark 12-20, and Rose Cotton. It was a long, strange trip, eh?

Favorite new player was Garen LiLorien, who played Ned the Hobbit in "The Wolf Run" RPG. I was very impressed by his well-rounded characterization of the plucky, yet self-doubting tween who struggled to find his courage. Hope to get to play with Garen again.

I have to say that my favourite character I played was Maikadurion from 'A Ride to the Dark Side', because he was my first truly successful attempt at getting out of my own character (which somehow always ends up being reflected in my main characters) and into someone else's. He was based largely on my best friend, and really helped me get inside the head of a character in my latest novel that I'm writing a little like him.

I also really love my latest character, Torfithien, who appears in 'To Rescue Celebrian', because she's kind of like a combination of what I am and what I would like to be. I think she'll be hard to write because of those differences, but I'm sure I'm going to enjoy RPGing in her guise.

As for other people's characters, I have to say that I particularly liked Deorlin, Izrenna and Aelfritha (Ride to the Dark Side), as well as Elentari, Lorin and Hreeza (Cirith Ungol), because they were such strong and realistic characters that were well-written and seemed to grow as the story progressed. Well done to you all and everyone who I have had the honour of gaming with! smilies/smile.gif

I've played three characters so far in a Tolkien roleplay, all of them here, all of them in the same story and one of them even vaguely approaching human. If I had to name my favourite of those it would be the mighty horse-lord, Baklava, whose ability to pour forth oceans of withering contempt without opening his mouth is a lesson to us all. It's very gratifying that at least one other person thought that the terrible trio was worth a mention. You do me too much honour, Diamond.

However my favourite RPG character (invented and played by me, that is) came from an old-fashioned dice-and-clipboard campaign, which I can't talk about too much because it wasn't based in Middle-earth. He was immortal, born so who knows how (this saves you the trouble of making ageing rolls, kids smilies/wink.gif ), and had lost his wife and son to a mob, who attributed his everlasting youth to a Satanic pact. His name was Sir Tristan de Tocqueville, and I loved playing him, but sadly all RPGs must come to an end and he had to retire eventually.

Dear Durelin,

My favorite character must have been and still is Anuion the elven ranger. I came up with him the firsth time I made a character. He had to wait tough since there where no elf's needed in the shire at that time. They DID need dwarfes so I made him a dwarg. Voila: Anuionin was born. The name was just a cheap rip-of from Anuion. I just gave it an IN to make it sound dwarfish. My fav character played by another is difficult. I liked your Hamfast. and Uhm Tallin is good aswell. (played by Amanaduial the Archer in the Shadow's of Umbria RPG) I could go on for this a long time. I like Raye as well. (Brinniel in the shadows of Umbria RPG)

Nice question by the way.

Since Durelin, has approved, here I go! Time to compliment others on their wonderful characters...

Rie, definitely. Red-headed, stubborn, Don's best friend. Played by Orual

Cami Goodchild, as child and adult, one of my favorite characters ever, though I'm not sure what Bowman thinks of her! Played by Child of the 7th Age.

Piosenniel, a most beautiful Elf, wonderful innkeeper, and another of my favorites. Played by Piosenniel.

Mithadan, yes, another Lonely Star character (that is definitely my favorite game I've read, though I haven't finished it yet). Piosenniel couldn't have chosen a better man to fall in love with. smilies/wink.gif Played by Mithadan.

Gaddbard Boffin and Halwon Cotton, two great Hobbits for laughs, fun, and adventure. Played by dragoneyes.

Giles Harfoot was a favorite from the start, with his crazy acrobatics and his salt & pepper. Played by Gandalf_theGrey.

Okay... that's all... for now. I have many other characters but I'll wait for now. Those are my top favorites. I feel as though I'm forgetting someone very important, but I can't remember who it is...

My favorite character was probably Izrênna, the Rohirrim from "A Ride on the Dark Side". I don't know why she was my favorite: she is nothing like me. My old character that keeps making appearances hither and yon, Menelduliniel, is a lot more like me than Izrênna. Maybe that is why I liked playing her: she is so unlike me. Well, I cried at the end of "A Ride on the Dark Side" in general, anyway. I'm not telling the ending in case someone wants to read it and doesn't want to know. smilies/wink.gif

My favourite two characters were Elanor Istavaira of the Crimson Sword and my self named character, Amanaduial Tuarcuar Mircorm of the Rivendell RPG (elennas one). Both lived by magic and, in rather nasty ways, died by magic.

I would have to say that my favorite charactr so far in my RPGs would be Narwen, in "Holiday in the Sun." She's tough, makes her own decisions, and is evil!

For some reason, playing evil characters has more appeal to me. It may be because that in almost every science fiction TV show I've seen, or in any TV show I've seen, the good guys are sooooooo stupid! They are attacked by the bad guys countless times, they finally capture them, and they kill them, right? Nooooo. They let them go, on the premise that they will redeem themselves. Evil people, I have seen, can be more intelligent. They kill their enemies! They make smart plans! They have cooler weapons and stories!

Though, saying that, some people have exceptionally well thought out good guys. They have well developed personalities, are intelligent and think on their feet, and don't hesitiate to do what they need to do.

Nevertheless, some bad characrters are horribly clichéd. The sweep around with grandiose ideas, and have huge egos. Their plans fail miserably, and they are overly dramatic. This sort of bad guy is not well thought out at all, and becomes a stereotype. Bad characters have to be thought out, and have a certain mix of evil and rightiousness that is sometimes hard to achieve. I'm still working on it.

But back to Narwen. Narwen has been my favorite character to write so far because of her unique position. Being a female corsair, she has to constantly be talking tough, looking tough, taking command, because if she doesn't, she'll be stomped. She has to defeat all the misconceptions surrounding females to suceed. Also, she is a skilled warrior, so her fights are fun to write. And, in this "evil" persona, I can blow off some steam by writing.

Even though she is not particularly good, she still has morals, though this is something strongly contested by my father, after he read a post where I killed someone. But contrary to appearances, she does have a heart, she just can't let it show very much, lest she be called weak. That's why she's my favorite.

From my own:
Pearl Took from the Hobbits Gift. (BTW, Nuru, that was an awesome game, thank you so much!!) I don´t even know WHY I liked Pearl so much, but it was so much fun playing her! I could let out all my girlie-girlie- ness, in one game, and that was soo funny. *giggles* And I also enjoyed playing her various fight scenes with Crystal!

Other´s Characters:
Definatly Fin and Aenara from Roll out the Barrels, played by The Real Findorfin and Aman the Archer. You people introduced me into RPGing, and it´s your fault I am an adict! Thank you so much!! But back to the characters: Fin and Aenara are really fun, and a funny, sweet couple. They made me laugh so much when I read their posts, and well, go you!

More other´s characters:
Cami from The Hobits Gift. Crystal from the Hobbits Gift. Bowman from the Hobbits Gift. (Gee, that Crew was top, wasn´t it?!) Played by Child, Sindae and Nuru. You people were really great!

I don't think so..... Let me search my memory (I've had these characters for a long time, even before The Long Winter)... I remember going through the family trees, the BD name generator, and the like, trying to find two names I liked. Dinodas was from a story I wrote a long while ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed that name. Robin came up as a name that was not too feminine, but could work with a female, and that was the kind of name I wanted, as Robin was based on myself, not wanting to be denied the things her male friends and family got: Such as doing hard work out in the fields with her father and brother rather than helping her mother with the cooking. (Shooting her arrows at Wargs rather than sitting home worrying about those who were smilies/wink.gif)

Pearl
I must say I'm quite pleased to hear you liked that game so much. Yes, that was a great crew. I don't know if I've mentioned him before, but Olo from Hobbit's Gift was wonderful. Played by Eruantalon, who sadly had to leave the Barrow-Downs.

dragoneyes
A couple weeks ago I had a dream about it. Of course, the excitement isn't quite over. When May comes my artist-friend is going to be convinced to draw a cover illustration for it, which I'll be showing to all the Long Winter crew, and ElentariGreenleaf, since she asked for it (don't worry, Elentari, I haven't forgotten!).

And now I'm becoming the best of friends with Angelica Baggins and Bill Ferny, characters I have been allowed to play in a Roleplaying game. It's funny how you become attached to the characters you play..... I'll never be able to read the FotR without thinking of the Shadow of the Star when I come across those two characters. Lately I've been finding myself acting out Fosco and Prisca scenes, Bill Ferny and Stoatie scenes, Angelica and Pio scenes, etc.

Evil characters are more interesting, but exotic-species evil characters are really interesting to me. I like how some people have played crow or Mumak characters. Of course, it creates whole new challenges, in playing as a creature that no one else has tried before, and as such, the player has to make up a whole new psychology for their character. I try to use that type of character exclusively- my only characters so far are a giant spider and a Balrog who has lost his powers. smilies/evil.gif

I'll say good-bye to my Jem here, from Holiday in the Sun. He was a good guy, after all.

As for other peoples' characters, there's Don, played by Nurumaiel, who resides at the Green Dragon Inn. :grins: Lovely friend, lovely girl, always there for my Rie. Go Don!

Jadae, played by Aylwen Dreamsong, in Search for the Book... What a character! Gotta love a take-charge kind of girl. Besides, I share Aylwen's affinity for "J" names...

Yr Saldan, played by Evinyatar, in Holiday in the Sun. Gives Saruman a run for his money in the evil competition. (Besides, Evinyatar deserves several thundrous rounds of applause for his leadership in Holiday. Three cheers!)

I haven't seen much of her yet, but I think I'm going to like (or at least love to hate) Shivana, played by Arien, in Escape from Nurn. Deliciously evil, my girl! She'll have to fight for her elf, though...believe me...

I'm forgetting a lot of people, I know. But I'm still getting to know some people in new RPG's, so I'll be back.

Oh, and thank you to Nuru, Ithaeliel, and Nuranar. Rie and Arethin appreciate your comments!

Yes, you gotta love the 'J' names. Though lately my characters don't have 'J' names. But in Escape from Nurn my character baby-sits children with 'J' names. Gah! I'm running out of 'J' names! Thank you, Orual! But who could *not* love Ari? Such a determined, nice guy! Awww.

Absolutely. No arguments here. Such a way to step in when leadership was needed! *Throws Confetti*

I am currently in only my first RPG on the Downs, Reclaiming the City, but I have three characters in it, so I guess I can choose. I rather like my orc character, Oghurn, because he a. is evil b. seems like an obedient and rather simple orc, but underneath this has a shrewd calculating mind c. will probably get to die a dramatic death. I don't know, really though, because that is only how I plan for him to be. So far he only has one post, and seems rather more bloodthirsty than I intended. smilies/rolleyes.gif

Oh yes, the most interesting deaths are the Orc's. My one and only Orc had a very Boromir-style death and only actually died after someone stuck stuck a pear through his head (much to the relief of those darned Elves). Yes, evil is fun. RIP Skaibad... Would an Orc rest in peace? Probably not.

Well, I have one character that is my main one: Aleia the hobbit. Sometimes I alter her to become an Elf or Human, but that's only happened once. I like playing hobbits because they are so colourful and varying in their attitudes and qualities. Aleia for example, is an archer and she has a black pony named Skeet. At first I had her background all crazy and the like, but now I have altered it so that it's more realistic. She's the wandering type; it's just more fun playing them because you can go write about new places and interesting people. And like any other normal hobbit she likes a good ol' pint every once in a while. And she also likes kicking arse every so often as well.

04-07-2003, 05:03 AM
Thanks Manardariel, I have four characters in total.

Findorfin (or Fin) the elf in the Green Dragon and Roll Out the Barrels, who likes to flirt.

Findorfin - the Man on Wolf Run, who was a ranger

Findorak - The Easterling, he ends up running away and dying, sweet.

Fingil - the Scholar/Ranger elf in To Rescue Celebrian.

My favourite has to be Fin the elf, because he is so much fun, followed by Findorak because he was evil, and a right wimp when he lost.

One of my other favourites is of course Pio, and Dwarin Thunderhammer, who in his time at the Green Dragon, got me washing quite a lot of dishes.

Raken and Mara in Quest for the Ainereg. They're great or evil, depending on how you look at it smilies/biggrin.gif

Rimbaud in the Seventh Star... I just like to wander over there and hear him talk.

Cami from "Lonely Star" *sighs* I read most of it, and what a horrible thing. I'm now completely hooked and determined to finish, and my final papers are simply not getting written. Also enjoying Mithadan and Pio.

Many thanks for those who've said a good word for Cami Goodchild, or for the Star RPGs.

There are so many characters and games I've enjoyed it's hard to tell where to start. The orginal crew of the Star, of course, but many other names could be added to that list. Orual's Sam (all the different ages she's played him); Auriel's wargs (so nice and nasty!); the Entish Bow crew, especially the duo between Esty and Mithadan; Nurmaiel's Angelica Baggins, along with that nasty Fosco; the Blue Mountain gang.

Best game I played in that, sadly, never reached an ending: The Gathering (Bird, sure wish we could do that one again).

In my rather short BDs history, I only rather recently discovered RPGing, so all my four characters have not been finished. I've got: (in Reclaiming the City) Evren, who, being my first ever RPG character, was a shieldmaiden smilies/rolleyes.gif but I like her all the same, because I (for some reason) had a lot of fun writing her 2 posts so far, Herlion, a captive of orcs, who doesn't seem to have much personality yet as he is spending his time coming in and out of unconsiousness, having been badly wounded, and Oghurn the Orc, whom I mentioned in a different post. And I've auditioned a wraith character, but not written anything for him. My characters so far are rather colorless, I think, but I'm just a beginner, so I guess that's okay. Oghurn is nice and evil though. Fun! smilies/evil.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif

Raken and Mara in Quest for the Ainereg. They're great or evil, depending on how you look at it

Thank you! That has made my YEAR, because I really love RPGing but I'm still pretty much a novice. I have to say I like Mara a lot because with an evil character you can let go...take that how you like! smilies/evil.gif I shouldn't say this as we have a big fued thing going on, but I like Raken too. Durelin is great to work with in an evil way!

Findorak because he was evil, and a right wimp when he lost.

I liked Findorak. He was funny- but did he have to go and die? He really messed "my" head up!

Of mine, I like Mara, and Ellie in the Green Dragon because she's so much of "me"!
For other people I tend to have a soft spot for characters I interact with, I love Raken of course, and Drago in the Green Dragon. I really liked the whole cast (?) of Search for The Lost Messenger. I think that went really well. Especially the Easterlings with a conscience!

Oh, Raken keeps gettting more and more evil! smilies/evil.gif I'm proud of how he's turning out so evil. Nuru- Well, coincidentally, those are both names from Arthurian legend. Dinodas was a knight and Robin was one of the many names for a dwarf. I think he was a magical dwarf, but anyway...

Check out my new post Carlas! I like the one before it too, but you learn about Raken's past in this newest one. Mind you we don't go round killing innocent children, I guess you'll have to wait and see what I mean. Basically evil and smart. And watch out she'll get her elf smilies/wink.gif smilies/smile.gif

For some reason, I never perused this thread until now. I see that a couple of my characters have been mentioned, most astonishingly by people reading the RPGs rather than having played in them (Sophia, if you want to really use up some time, check out the original Star RPG threads).

I've never been able to consider "Mithadan" a character because he actually started out as me in a party thread. Two months later, when the RPG that developed turned into a real plotted game I sat down and wrote a background for him that explained his personality in Middle Earth terms. But because he evolved, rather than having been created, I can't say he's my favorite.

I'm very fond of Gravlox from The Revenge of the Entish Bow, because he started out as a foil for the main characters and ended up as a significant part of the plot. Too bad he's dead.

I liked Nardol from Castle Maladil in the beginning. He was an Elf with a dark past who hated himself and everyone else, but especially Men. However, I made the mistake of letting him be "healed" and he lost his depth and his direction as a result. I may recreate him sometime.

An outstanding character, actually a shared NPC (non-player character), was Angara the dragon from The Lonely Star. Each of us contributed something to her and her development and depth was astonishing.

All of the Star and Entish Bow characters were fun and interesting. Varda and Aylwen's characters from Maladil were also great. Outside of RPGs I've been in, and I confess that I've read fewer than I should, I really like Melost, Arthain and Anwanelme from the Brotherhood RPG in Rohan. If you follow one RPG other than your own, keep an eye on Brotherhood!

This thread needs to be brought back to attention. smilies/biggrin.gif RPGers love attention and praise right?

I like characters who bring an element of humour to the RPG. My favorite character ever was The X Phial's Bregand. He was fantastic even though he gave Wren a circus tent during my absense... smilies/wink.gif

In one of my more recent RPGs, Corsairs and Corsets, I like Sophia's Siriel and Tiriel and really enjoy Elora's Ruiel--who is my character's mum.

Of the characters I've played I most enjoyed Wren from Truth in a Dark Place and Durvagor from The Summons. Both had a commical side to them that competed with the morbid side of the RPGs especially present in The Summons.

I have to hand out kudos to the following people:

Gelion- for her portrayal of the angsty teenage cat, Huine, in A House Divided.

Pio- for Jamilah in Dark Seduction.

Ealasaid- for Old Bill Cummerbund and his sword in Sailing Away.

Squatter- for Earnur Etceteron. Regardless of the opinions of certain Gormlessar fanciers. smilies/wink.gif

Of my own characters, my runaway favorite is Iswyn, who is employed at the White Horse.

Saucepan Man: in the party as himself. He was great.

Oraul: Every charecter of yours I've seen has been great.

Varda and Arien: You guys were great in sailing away.

Annun : I loved your post in th Hunt for a Dragon. They were so discriptive and long.

Cami- You were a great mod in Hunt for Dragon. I had so much fun and I enjoyes all your post and charecters. Keep up the ggod work.

Everyone else: You are all great RPGers but I have a feaaling this post is already to long so I just want to say if your not on here, you still are great RPGers. And for everyone in Corasirs and Corsets much praise for you for taking on a very big RPG. You make it great.

Of my characters I like Earwen (Party), Eleniel(Corsairs), Rowan (Hunt for Dragon), and Penny (Sailing away).

Sometimes you love characters because they start out strong and bowl you over. But sometimes you see characters grow and change in an RPG, just as people themselves evolve in real life. And that kind of growth can be exciting to watch.

With that thought in mind, I'd like to give kudos to all those who stayed the course in Hunt for the Dragon: Elentari, Eruwen, Elven Maid Earwen, Orofaniel, Novnarwen....

And especially Annunfuiniel whose portrayal of three dwarves (Vráin, Gráin, and Farin) was quite amazing: one of the best depictions of family bonds and budding attachments between male and female dwarves that I've ever seen.

Annunfuiniel, I hope to see those dwarves popping up in other RPGs.

And Elven Maid....we just cross posted! Thanks for your kind words.

It's amazing that I haven't read this thread before now, but it's fun to see what people think about the different characters.

Outside of RPGs I've been in, and I confess that I've read fewer than I should, I really like Melost, Arthain and Anwanelme from the Brotherhood RPG in Rohan. If you follow one RPG other than your own, keep an eye on Brotherhood!

Thank you, Mith! smilies/biggrin.gif
I see that comment was made back in May, so that may explain why you like Anwanelme. Since everyone now seems to truly hate her as if she is Sauron himself. I wonder why... smilies/tongue.gif

Elven maiden Earwen and Cami - many, many thanks! But most part of the credit goes to you and other Hunters; it truly was a group effort and we made it through! smilies/smile.gif

I really loved playing the Dwarf bros. and (later) Farin (+Selvren). Vráin and Gráin were easy to write as they had, and still have, real life 'models' in my own siblings. I'd love to play them in the future too!

So now, for the favorite roleplaying characters that others have played...

-The above mentioned Hunt for the Dragon cast: all were great and became even better during the game. But Cami, without you we would have been lost, literally too!

-RoEB crew; the former and the present: no words of praise are enough so I won't even try...

-In the Shadow of the Star: again all, but especially Pio and Cami have made that game one wonderful reading experience. Thank you! But the tears that shall be shed in the end... *snif*

I absolutely loved all the characters in Escape From Nurn, especially Envinyatar's, Mattius's, Arien's, and Aman's. That was one of the really good RPGs I got to read, and I enjoyed it! smilies/biggrin.gif

Of my own RPG characters, I can't really say anything good. I enjoyed writing for Herevion in The Summons, but he came out a bit... corny, (though many thanks to Ibai for helping me edit him), and I sort of liked Cersed in Footsteps of the Grey Company, but I think he was too evil to be interesting.

(And Qirfah and Qamar! I have a soft spot for them. smilies/biggrin.gif )
I have to second that. It's breathtaking and inspiring to read Pio's posts! But also, I think all the characters from Dark Sed. are excellent- Jasara (Aylwen), Khasia (Sophia), Ahmad et al (Ealasaid), Sevora (Durelin), Dristi (Arien), Thorgom (Helka), Ghurdan and Zasfal (Nerindel), Falia (Tinuviel). As far as my favorite character that I have written... hmmm.. I haven't done that many yet. At the moment, I would have to say Kaldir in the Green Dragon, although I am awfully fond of Benia (Green Dragon) and Ahmad (Dark Seduction) as well.

Okey first of all I think it was a really cool RPG, Hunt for The Dragon. The twin brothers made it funny and also, it was a different touch to the whole thing. Of course, I would like to say that all did a great job in that RPG. I read it in Elvenhome and was stunned.

Annun: I think the twins were great!

I would also say that, Corsairs has a lot of different and exciting characters.

I will join the chorus and give praise to Elora for her writing the character of Lady Ruiel in the RP Corsairs & Corsets (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=19&t=000086)! I am not ashamed to say I pointed the role out to her when it was going unfilled in the planning/discussion phase, and now I find myself and my abbreviated and time-constrained attempts at writing the character of Ränne (Lady Ruiel's maid) to be outmatched & outclassed by her fine writing style.

Other characters I have enjoyed here are Kaldir & Benia, Elasaid's fine characters whom one of my characters met at the Green Dragon (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=19&t=000074).

As for mine? Well, I wish I had the time I once had to write RP, as I would do a MUCH BETTER job in writing Ränne. My favorite of my creations is the Ranger Hanasían, who was one of the thirty Dúnedain who rode south to meet Aragorn. I also have developed from a previous RP a couple years ago on another site his parents, Halasían & Forcwyn.

Well, work calls, which makes it difficult to get the thought processes turning to write quality posts in RP. Hope to get back into writing soon.

Brinniel's Raye/Corrowyn from The Shadows of Umbra (and soon Silvandl!)

Lyra also plays an Elena in Swan Wood. So many Elenas! There was one in Betrayal of Trust too, if I remember correctly, played by Ransom. I'm sure there are/were a lot of other Elenas besides, too!

I like Sophia's character Khasia in Dark Seduction. She's so evil and power-hungry I can't help but love Khasia! She's worse than Jasara and will be a great priestess, aye? Not to mention the wonderful job done by Pio as Jamilah & co., and Ealasaid as Ahmad & co! But I love all the characters from Dark Seduction! I have also become a member of the Najah fan club. smilies/evil.gif

I enjoy reading all of Betrayal of Trust. Though when it ends we will barely have passed one page, the story/plot as a whole has gone all over the place and is so intricate, and I think it's almost amazing that we've taken the characters so far in only one page. I especially look forward to Halasan's death. smilies/wink.gif Just kidding.

Same thing goes for everyone in Brotherhood. I know we've had some schedual troubles but the story has come so far and everyone is doing a wonderful job! Cuth, Maika, Aman, Daniel Telcontar, and Durelin have all done such wonderful jobs.

I also admire Taralphiel and her patience/leadership in Swan Wood through missing players and the unfortunate need to kill off one or two.

Good job everyone! I also love Madi from the White Horse! Minky Ting! smilies/wink.gif

This is really hard! I love all my RPG characters, but my favourites would probably have to be the two brothers Maikadurion and Laitalathion, partially because Maikadurion was the first I wrote a death scene for (as anyone who has ever killed off their character will know, it's incredibly hard to do), partially because they were the first male characters I wrote for, and partially because they helped give me an idea for a novel. But I think all my characters are candidates for my favourites because they all have qualities that I like about them.

Edit: The three RPGs I've been in have had fantastic characters, but I do have a couple of favourites:

Wow, I've met up with so many new and interesting RPG characters since the last time I posted.

Elora, Maika, and Arien for their interesting family in Corsairs and Corsets that seem so much like real people, as well as their strong writing.

Madi and Anwir from The White Horse are a lot of fun to read, and Anwir is going to be great to work with.

All the rest of the characters from Corsairs and Corsets, but a special mention goes to Pelien played by Alak.

And as for my characters, though they are completely new, I'm having a blast with Melilot Sackville-Baggins and Hamson Cotton at the Green Dragon.

And some older characters that deserve to be mentioned again...

All the Star sequel characters remain favorites, as well as the original Star.

Orual's Rie, who was at the Dragon, the Horse, and the BD BD (Barrow-Downs B-Day).

Eruantalon's delightful hobbit from Hobbit's Gift.

Manardariel's Pearl Took from Hobbit's Gift.

Every single hobbit in The Long Winter. Memories of that game are so many. It was probably the best game I ever had the privilege to play in.

I must say that I didn't like Gilbereth (played by Eladain Moruviel) in The Fall of Greenwood the Great at first, but he kind of grew on me. (Or maybe it was the writer smilies/tongue.gif ) Also in Greenwood, I think that Nerindel's character Taurewen is wonderful.

In the Green Dragon, my own character is having a bit of a dilemma about which of the two men at her table she likes more. I have the same problem smilies/biggrin.gif Gorothlamothiel's Soronume is very interesting to read about and Dynaviir (played by Dynaviir) is quite intriguing.

In Flight from Rohan, I think Brytta (played by Himaran) is pretty cool, and I'm enjoying the rivalry between my character Hama and Pio's Archim. Also Carrun's Awyrgan.

And in the game that just finished, Dark Seduction, I really enjoyed Sammael. I think Lyra played him. (Too bad he couldn't save Falia...)

And that's about all I can say for now.

I think that it may be time to resurrect this great thread.

For myself: it's hard to decide which of my own characters is my favourite -- it's like choosing a favourite child! But I suppose I would have to say that my very first character, the one I invented for my first post on the Downs at the Green Dragon, has a special place in my heart. Snaveling began as a rogue and and vagabond, but through his interactions with other gifted gamers he soon evolved into something far more interesting...Tar-Corondir, as he is now known, continues to surprise me.

As to a favourite character from someone else, it is even harder to single one out. I am loathe to do so even, for fear of appearing as though there were not a whole slew of incredible characters in the rpgs I've been fortunate to play in. But of them all, I would have to say that probably my very favourite is Bethberry's Queen Bekah from Shadow of the West. Bekah was everything one wants in an rpg character: compelling, complex and powerfully drawn. Even her death gave the game whole new directions and dictated much of what happened later.

EDIT I could not resist coming back to put in a special word of awe, regard and gratitude to Aman for her Innkeeper persona at the Green Dragon. My most enjoyable gaming experiences have all come in reaction to that wonderful maiden.

Firefoot

What a difficult question! I've not really thought about it before, I suppose, but now that I do, I'm finding that the younger the character, the more attached I am (which may explain why I have more difficulty attaching myself to Elvish characters...) I really enjoyed writing Sondo in my RPG 'Sailing Away.' In many ways, I suppose he is a male version of me, slightly exaggerated in some points and diminished in others. Actually, if you combine him and my first ever character in the Green Dragon, Lily (who I also grew very attached to), you'd probably have a fair idea of me. (Hm... if that's true, Nuru probably knows me pretty well by now ;) ) Ah... back on topic. The two other characters that spring to mind are Siamak from 'Shadow of the West' and Adranel from 'Siege of Gundabad.' The former was a really interesting experience for me because (especially in the beginning) he was so different from most of the characters I've written. When I wrote Adranel, I alternated between feeling really bad for her and wanting to knock some sense into her... Another very interesting experience. So I guess my two 'favorites' are Sondo and Siamak, then Adranel, and Lily in a close fourth. I still sometimes wonder about what might have happened to those last two...

As for a favorite character of someone elses... I'll have to think about that one. So many characters to choose from... Hm. I'll let you know when (if ;) ) I ever decide.

I really enjoyed writing Sondo in my RPG 'Sailing Away.' In many ways, I suppose he is a male version of me, slightly exaggerated in some points and diminished in others. Literally dimished, I hope - unless Firefoot really is a hobit?!

Well called, Fordim - it doesn't seem like nearly two years since I've answered this thread. Some of them stay the same, of course - Elora's Vanwe (now called Uien) from the Green Dragon is still one of my favourites, even, or maybe especially, from her much earlier posts. Some other Green Dragon favourites include...

- Snaveling/Tar-Corondir (Coriander!) played by Fordim Hedgethistle - and this is far from being any sort of tit-for-tat response to Fordim's kind words (thank you very much, by the way :)). This rogue has run Aman, and many of the staff and customers of the Dragon, a merry dance over the past couple of months! His rogue-ishness is delightful, but Snaveling also had hidden depths, and the way Fordim has played him and allowed Aman to respond has been a pleasure to play, and a pleasure to read.

- Hanson played by Arry. Arry is one of my favourite players, and Hanson has stayed in the Dragon for a fair while now. The dialogues between him and his friends, and the way the hobbit boy views the adults of the Green Dragon make Hanson's posts great to read. I've not really thought about it before, I suppose, but now that I do, I'm finding that the younger the character, the more attached I am Firefoot, I agree - I suppose this is an example of that...

- Tevildo played by Tevildo - the feline scoundrel!

To follow on Firefoot's shamefully egotistic line of thought (;)), I have played a few characters recently who I have been rather fond of. Faerim, in 'Fall of the North' (The Shire) is a character who I've had fun playing. He's a seventeen year old boy, so fairly close in age to myself, and I guess there's a fair bit of myself in him...he's just more confident...and male...

Well, I have been role-playing in a while, so this will be calling up some Old School games that a lot of you probably don't even really remember.

Okay, firstly, I played Barzûn, a Dwarf in Resettling the Lost Kingdom. It's the only time I have ever played a Dwarf - and it was one of the best times I've had. I don't think I necessarily did a fantastic job, but it was so interesting playing a character from such a race. We really don't know all that much about Dwarves - Tolkien gave us far more insight into the world of Men and Elves. And Dwarves were so different from any other race on Middle Earth.

I blushingly admit that I really liked Castar and Windheneb. They were in The White Horse Inn, Act II. It was really to get over my quiet fear of playing male characters - if you look, I do not play men that often. I just think I'm not so good at it - they always come across as very feminine men, in my opinion. It may just be my paranoia, I don't know.

And to be honest, there were some games where I was absolutely miserable - without a doubt (no names, don't worry). Another reason I quit - I kept falling into games where half of the members were absent three-quarters of the time, often including me. Tempers grew short, the owners weren't the most organized. But I do have an idea for a game brewing in my own mind. It'll have to wait until I come back from vacation, probably, since I leave in a little over three weeks. It'll give me time to work on it more. *Rubs her hands together and gives a sinister little smile*

It's back. Admittedly, I haven't had the time to get fully involved in an RPG for about six months now - saaad - but I hereby hand this thread over to the new generation of RPGers! Share, do: your favourite RPG characters, your own and other players', your favourite RPGers themselves, and reasons why.

For a quick, updated version, I was recently skimming through a few old threads, and came across the last game I was involved in, and sadly neglected near the end, I'm sorry to say. But it had some remarkable characters in it! I've always been a fan of corsair RPGs, such as the Ambassador's Son, but Numenorean Blood Runs Black (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=12334&page=1) was a fantastically enjoyable game to play in.

Anguirel, ever a joy, came out with a perfectly wicked character: Sangalazin. Evil, thou knowst know wisdom until you've taken a leaf out of this guy's book...and yet, at the same time, he was both beautiful and charming. The embodiement of the spoilt brat of the richest king in the world. And Anguirel himself - you're a marvel to play with: reliable, creative and dependable, as well as having such a wit - 'banter', I believe you Southerners would call it...;)

On my own side, I can add to my repertoire a new favourite character to play, or one of my favourites at least: Captain Chatazrakin Telmenzar, or merely Rakin for short. Ooh, I do love playing pirates - v. fun.

And I don't know why I didn't previously mention this - I suppose I concentrated mainly on the characters of the now-extinct Green Dragon in my last post - but the games Shadow of the West (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=11357) and The Ambassador's Son (http://www.forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=5625) as well. Two excellently constructed games that allowed me to play around with excellent characters and settings. Extraspecial mentions do, however, go to Maikafanawen and Nuranar for creating that game (there were too many brilliant characters and writers to pinpoint one or two - Devon, Jythralo, Adeline, Calnan...); and to Fordim , of course, for the Shadow: he makes an excellent baddie! And my particularly 'co-actor', Firefoot: always one of my favourite RPGers...

Good times.

I had forgotten about this thread!

Good to have you back, Aman. We've missed you in the RPing world (not that I'm suggesting you need to come back to it or anything... ;)).

Some newer favorties: CaptainofDespair's cameo as Ulfang in Treachery of Men (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=13382) already seems to be too bloody interesting (and crazy!), and the game's just started! Ang has really out-done himself with that game. It's going to be incredible. I'm so happy to play again with Fordim, Celuien, Mithalwen, and Kath.

In The Fellowship of the Fourth Age: A New Beginning (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=12961) I think everyone deserves a lot of kudos. It's seven pages long, and we still haven't united the three groups that were essentially supposed to start out together. It's been a wonderful game, with some amazing characters. Regin Hardhammer, Undome, Firefoot, Child of the 7th Age, and Nogrod have all taken on the insane task of playing as "good" Orc characters as either major or minor characters, and they simply amaze me for doing so. And they've done such an excellent job.

It's been great fun to play with Nogrod's Hadith and Brinniel's Shae, as well as the whole "Fellowship": Pio, Child, Folwren, Tevildo, and Hilde. Folwren's Athwen is a marvellous heroine, and Hilde's Carl has made me really want to play as a Hobbit again. Special kudos to Pio for her very "different" character; he's unique, lovable, and so incredibly well done - and is such a difficult sort of character to "do" well, I think.

Really, I'd just like to say how spoiled I am because of the roleplaying here! Everyone's just so...good!

so obviously, I remember Angore and Ondomire with particular affection :D

Of my own characters, I feel I could have written a lot more of Elfride, there was loads of stuff I knew about her and didn't use. May have to take her to the Mead Hall .. but I "my boys" need to be my priority for a while..

I love this thread.

In Island of Sorrow I could list everyone who played...but I think Oremir, by Envinyatur, was a particularly tragic character, forced very much against his will into the West.

I remember Aman's Rakin with awe and respect, and I also liked Alcarillo's Gondorian captain in Numenorean Blood. I hold out hope for a sequel...

Audrey's Skittles in ATM II is just a hoot.

But the supreme prize goes to Firefoot's Grimkul and Ulwakh, (have I got their names right?) who gripped me as a spectator in Sirannon.

Red Flows the Sirannon was my first RPG ever. In it, I met a whole handful of memoriable characters and although I've played a couple games since then and am busy in several now, I can't say that I have enjoyed writing so much since.

My character was Bror, a young dwarf from Moria. He was a ton of fun to play - more than I expected. I'd never written about a dwarf before and it was a ton of fun. He might be my favorite character that I've written thus far. . .but I dunno. Athwen cuts a close second. My captain fellow in Numenorean Blood Runs Black was fun, too.....

Bror's two brothers were Skald and Riv and these two great characters were played by Poi and Arry. I laughed many times while reading those two's posts, and I cried when Pio killed Riv.

Right now, I am enjoying playing with Tevildo's two characters in Fellowship of the Fourth Age. He has Azhar and Dorran. Both happen to closely tied to my two characters, Kwell and Athwen.

Firefoot's steward like character in Numenorean Blood etc. cracked me up to no end, even if he was a grumpy snob. I don't remember his name.

Really, I have played with a ton of great characters in my short time here at the 'Downs. I also much respect Elempi's Eodwine character and enjoy many other characters at the Mead Hall. The list could go on decades!

So many to choose from.

Elempi's Jorje from "Friends of Nimrodel" is one of my newest favorites. A perfect example of what an animal character can be.

"Shadow of the West" remains one of my favorite RPG's, though in the end we lost most of our writers. :( Aman's and Fordim's characters were both superbly done.

There are currently many enjoyable characters in "Fellowship of the 4th Age" - too many to mention, really. I love Tevildo's Azhar, Folwren's Kwell, Nogrod's Hadith, and Brinniel's Shae.

I loved all the Dwarf characters especially in "Red Flows the Sirannon" - an RPG that I think was well-written from all corners, which was why it worked so well. Another fun RPG.

And I know I'm forgetting so many more...

Others': Elora's Vanwe - so completely realized, so intriguing. I sort of wistfully wonder what it might have been like if she had not turned into Uien...

Mine (now): Tirril/Jorje; thanks to mark12_30 for inventing him and handing him off. He's got the 'aroo'. :)

Ah, I remember The Ambassador's Son. To this day, I still feel horrible and completely regret ever leaving that game. Shortly after we started, my schoolwork piled up a mile high and not long after I became swamped with dance competitions. I think it was around that time I started to completely disappear from the Downs. The plot for the RPG was so exciting, and I took care into writing Adeline's profile- I was really looking forward to putting her into play. I still wish I could've been part of the RPG- it was just bad timing on my part... :(

I have to say how thankful I am you invited me into this RPG, Durelin. When I returned to the Downs, I wanted to RPG again, but after what happened to me in The Ambassador's Son, I was hesitant to get involved, fearing I would disappear again. My experience so far in Fellowship of the Fourth Age could not be more rewarding. Indeed, seven pages is long, especially since we're not even close to being done. Looking back at previous RPGs, I've never gotten past five pages, so the length is exciting to me. Everyday, I look forward to reading others' posts, as well as writing my own. There's no better place I could've started RPGing again than Fellowship of the Fourth Age, and I'm very happy to be part of it. :)

Thanks to all who have mentioned Shae- I have enjoyed writing her so far. I think all the characters for this RPG are well written- there are definitely no weak writers here. Of course, I must say that Khamir is my favorite character- he has been so much fun to interact with. :p

It's hard to say which of the characters I've written myself is my fave: they were all the result such labour and love. But I must admit that my very first RPG character in the late and lamented Green Dragon Inn has a very special place in my heart. Snaveling the rogue from the wilderness, transformed by love and friendship to something less rough and unwholesome, discovers both his long-lost grand-daughter, and his true identity as the lost king of drowned Numenor. I think he is such a favourite of mine because so much of what became of him was the result of the excellent writing of those I encountered -- he is the product of their skill as much as he owes anything to me. (I am still determined to arrange an RPG in which I can bring Snaveling back and complete his story somehow...)

Of the many excellent characters written by others, Queen Bekah from Shadow of the West brought to brilliant life and then tragic death by Bethberry has a special place of awe in my pantheon.

Kransha's Thrakmaz one-eye from Bloodstained Elanor was hands down the single best orc character ever created on the Downs...on par with any of the orcs that even the Professor allows us to see.

Aman's alter ego, the Innkeeper of the Golden Dragon is, of course, beloved for all kinds of reasons.

One other character I must needs mention, again of my own creation, is Chakka from Numenorean Blood Runs Black. I had to leave the game mid-stride and regret to this day that I could not explore him more fully -- he promised to be a truly fascinating figure.

That tears it....I'm sending in a proposal for a Snaveling RPG tomorrow.

The Wandering King

But only if his grand-daughter can come along for the ride!

In fact, wouldn't it be interesting to gather up the active writers from the Green Dragon and reunite their characters in an RPG....?????

OK!! Brilliance!!!

ANNOUNCEMENT to any and all writers who had ongoing characters in the Green Dragon Inn and who wish to reunite for one last stand -- PM me or post here your interest and let's see what we can whip up!

Roa?? Yoo-Hoo! Roa....Looking at you....

Others: Crystal Heart's Mayonette from Darker Days as well as
Cordelia Harrison's Cordelia from Darker Days
Firefoot's Lily from Green Dragon
Nurumaiel's Posco and Blanco from Green Dragon

Mine: Léoflic from Daker Days
Groin from Green Dragon
Glirdingo from Life of Gold (currently in play :p )

Hookbill, I actually wouldn't mind bringing Groin back. I liked playing a Dwarf! :D So I'm all for it.

(Man, I have REALLY gotten into these RPG's :D )

My favorite character of mine was Wilhelmina Brochenbach from Assigned to Mordor... my favorite character someone else wrote is Primrose Bolger's Sassy Brandybuck from Sailing Away. I remember Prim wanted us to leave her character alone so she could work on her own storyline for Sassy, and it turned out very well (if sad). Oh! And Firefoot's Grimkul and Ulwakh in Red Flows the Sirannon were two really nifty characters as well. :)

From my first experience of BD roleplaying from the Green Dragon I remember Lommy's enigmatic Grimhorn the Beorning with great pleasure.

The Fellowship of the Fourth Age contains a host of great characters. Durelin's Khamir and Firefoot's Johari are so angsty and complex personalities (also in a sense of having complexes  ) that it almost feels they must be real. I have also enjoyed playing with Regin's Ishkur a lot.

In Eorling Mead Hall there surely are remarkable people too. Somehow and for some odd reason I love Jenny's patronising Marenil and Celuien's children are also a great fun. Lmp's lord Eodwine and Fea's Saeryn are life-sized persons, written flesh and bone.

From my own characters I still remember Sythric with warmth, although as he appeared in the first actual RPG I played through (Outracing the Flames) I may have somewhat twisted judgement on this. You know the magic of the first time... Hadith (FFA) I'm slowly getting used to and there is some promise in him to become an interesting person. But that's quite open yet. And Cnebba (EMH) is just so much fun to write - even though he is a shared character with Lommy.

But Fordim, please don't have the RPG thread open until the Christmas holidays, or I may burst with work...

But hey, while we're at it, what about old Toby Hornblower, Snaveling's partner in crime? Where's Kransha...

But hey, while we're at it, what about old Toby Hornblower, Snaveling's partner in crime? Where's Kransha...

My beloved partner in crime and rpg-ing disappeared from the Downs about a year ago if memory serves. That was a truly sad passing, as Kransha and I rather shadowed each other through our first RPGs....I'm fairly certain that we each of us played in every game together.

Toby was a particular fave, and if I do put together a Green Dragon rpg he would have to figure in it somehow since, as memory serves, he actually gave Snaveling a house in the Shire for his very own.
