I saw this from Maril [in the Bones thread] I like the feature where I can track down where someone has last posted. Certain people are always fun, and you can find some lively threads just following their trail.


and I thought, might be a good way to promote high quality posting.

So there it is - Are you a stalker?

You can if you wish I suppose mention whom you follow around...

Personally there are quite a few people I wish I had time to follow around, and there are a couple I invariably find well worth the effort.

A good practice though as it often leads me to corners of the barrows I often would not haunt.

My favourite people to stalk would have to be … Estelyn Telcontar, Lindil (he he), Lush, GaladrieloftheOlden, The Evenstar, Lyra Greenleaf, Beren87, Bethberry (when she is actually on!) and last but not least piosenniel, all I can say is that these people are VERY intresting ... smilies/smile.gif. I forgot to say in my other post that it is funny when I go into Who Is Online because I normally bump into Lindil. You can see all the people who stalk because you always bump into them. Wow, you caught me. Yes, I have been "stalking" a *few* people. This might end up being very embarrassing, but to name some...Tigerlily Gamgee, Samwise, I used to stalk Frodo Baggins when she was on, B-W, Diamond 18, Carrûn, Goroth in the RPG sections, Estelyn, Burra and others.

I don't know why I do, but they always have interesting posts. And yes, Niluial, I like reading the "Who's Online" thing too.

Sometimes when I want to check to see if somebody is really dumb or if they are just having a bad day, or if somebody is great and just having a good day. Especially if they don't post often where I would have seen it. Sometimes I check to see if people that don't post often have recently and I just missed it.

Anyway, yeah, I'm guilty, I stalk. Well, I don't use the recent post feature so much, but sometimes I look at threads started by certain people which maybe I wouldn't have rushed to check out just from subject title. And then there's that indicator on the forum home which shows which thread was posted in most recently and by whom. I sometimes click on that depending on who posted.

Hmm. Anyway, there was a point to this. Yes. Who I stalk. I "follow" different people for many different reasons. I won't go into them all... But I often follow the mods around like some morbid spectator on the highway when there's been an accident, reading the threads they've closed. Hey, it tells me what not to do!

Names. You want names? Okay.

Esty, Squatter, Sharon, Rim, Kalimac, burrahobbit, Lush, Bill Ferny, Saucepan Man, Bethberry, Maril, H-I, Kuruharan, Birdie, Tigerlily, et al.

Sometimes, I just like to follow administrators, because they're the ones who really know stuff.. and it's cool to see what they write.

I must admit to being a frequent stalker; sometimes it’s for my own enjoyment, then I click on the ‘Users Online’ to see where interesting members and personal friends are reading or posting. Sometimes I do click on the ‘View Recent Posts’ of the personal profile of those who write the most interesting posts or haven’t been around much lately to see what I might have missed. And yes, that does take me to some fora (*cough* Mayhem *cough*) that I don’t routinely visit, sometimes discovering gems in the chaos… smilies/wink.gif

The other reason for stalking is not so enjoyable and belongs to moderating responsibilities; when I read an annoying post by someone (often but not always a newcomer) I do go to their profile and ‘view recent posts’ to follow their tracks and see if there is some closing or deleting (or even more drastic measure) that needs to be done. I strongly suspect that this activity explains all the interest in stalking me – I’m being stalked while stalking!! smilies/rolleyes.gif

PS - How come no one follows my tracks to the 'minor works' quotes thread?? I'd be delighted to have more people coming there!!

Heavens! I've been frustrating stalkers without knowing it.

I most often use the 'hide from who's online' mode, probably because I am loathe to show just how much time I spend here!

I tend to learn what topics my favourite Downers frequent and follow those threads. (Rather like finding a favourite pub or bar and getting to know the regulars there--when I had a life that allowed me to pub or bar crawl, not that I am a voracious imbiber.)

And I read my wonderful Rohan gamers' posts faithfully and enthusiastically, whether they post in games or in the Discussion threads. I love you guys.

Oh, and I 'lurk' to find Downers who might like to join the RPGs.

I've always wondered what that little IP:logged link does. If its what I think, your IP address, all an admin has to do I run an IP tracer program and they can find out where we live-are posting from.

Just for everyone's information, IP addresses are too imprecise to track a physical address for a poster, though they can be used to determine if two posters using different nicknames are, in fact, the same person. Even then, IP addresses can vary if, for example, a user changes his or her service provider. So, no, the admins are not involved in an evil plot to track down the site's members. Another board I'm on, where I knew the webmaster/administrator, got some mails of a rather aggravating nature by someone, we'll call him X, who disliked the team we were discussing. The administrator traced X's IP back to a large, well-known company, and, just to let X know he was being watched, politely sent a brief mail to the company outlining the situation, and explaining the possible need to block the company's IP. The company wrote back and responded that X had been given a 'most severe' reprimand, and if he ever toed out of line on the forum, to please let the company know because such behaviour would not be tolerated.
In short, knowing X's IP was enough to get him within a hair's breadth of losing his job.
And no, I don't stalk anybody, but I have a long shortlist of people who's posts I'll stop to read while skimming through those topics with 300+ posts

Well, there seems to be 2 main strategies. You can either click on the Users Online link in the top(ish) left corner under the BDs symbol, then click onto the links of which threads people are posting on. Alternatively (my personal favourite smilies/wink.gif ) you can go to their profile (links above posts), then view recent posts, then click on the links to threads there. I hope that makes sense!

I must admit, whenever I check the Who's Online page(I do that frequently, I'm bored frequently) the first people I look up are the Admins and Mods. Then, I usually check most of the people who are in my RPGs, to see if they're posting anything there. Afterwards, either I look there for names of good posters, or I just check out the names of each frequently-appearing thread and if the name seems catchy I might give the thread a try.

I tend to stalk the people in the parkinglot of my school. They come out of the builing and iIfollow them to their car, then when they leave I take their spot. More effective than driving in circles.... And as I have said before I stalk on the Barrowdowns as well.
