I was just wondering: how did all you thousands of people find out about this site? I really can't think of enough ways that there would be a few thousand people who found the same site. smilies/eek.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif

Me myself, I was trying to draw a picture of each member of the Fellowship. They all came out okay, except Legolas, who came out looking like an old man. So I decided to print out some good photos/pictures of him and look at that while I drew, so it would be easier. I searched 'Legolas' in Google images. I felt extremely disturbed by some of the rabid sites the search popped up with, so I began looking at the site name before clicking. Finally, I found one without the words 'Orli', 'Leggi', 'hot', or 'sexy' which was the Barrowdowns. And then I started looking at the rest of the site, and signed up, and then discovered the forum a month or so later. Yeah. You're bored now aren't you? smilies/rolleyes.gif (rhetorical question)

There are at least two threads which answer that question so maybe you could seach for them and read through them.

I was searching around for the Chat and I found the Barrow-Downs Chat. I think it was right before the movie came out. I had figured that, though I had been a Tolkien fan for a long time, finally, with a movie coming out, there were bound to be good Chatrooms coming around because of the movie. In February of 2002, after chatting with many Forum-members in the Chat, I finally got an account at the Downs. And here I am!

I was stumbling around EZBoard one day, looking for Tolkien forums and low and behold I found BD! Been here ever since, with a slight leave of absence in 2001. [my EZboard name was hegemonmatt, but I changed it when I resigned up on the PHP]

I've been on the Barrow Downs for a long time, but I just recently realised that there was a forum. That's my story. Short, sweet, and to the point.

I was looking around mostly searching for pictures and a good Tolkien site(We had only just got the internet). I found lots but for some reason the Barrow Downs stuck out above the rest. I went into chat and had some good fun there. Then one day I decided to see what the forum was all about (being new to the net) I wanted to add a reply but found out you have to be signed up so I did and I haven't looked back. smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif smilies/smile.gif

I honestly can't remember, it was so looong ago. smilies/wink.gif I suspect I found the BD by accident, like many of us here. I lurked for ages before I started posting, which is why I have so few posts, compared to my member number.

I personally found it on my own. Before I read the books, I'd seen the movies and was kinda obsessed with Frodo. So I searched the web for his fansites(I'm kinda ashamed now) then I found this site. I loved the themes, the forums everything was great, and for about two months, I've learned so many new things and met people(in the forums) that shared my interest. Now I can say I am the most tolkien learned of all my friends and they come to me with their questions. Thanks Barrow downs.

I found The Barrow-Downs through my friend. She introduced me to The Name Generator which fascinated me greatly. After that, I decided to take a look around the site, and I ended up wandering into the forum. Shortly after, I signed up! smilies/biggrin.gif ... And that is my story. smilies/wink.gif

I think I first went on here because of the Name Generator, and the Who were you in Middle Earth? quiz. Then I eventually started looking around (the fan art, and some of the fan fiction is really great), and then I went to the forum just to look at what everyone was talking about, though it took about 8 months for me to actually register.

For the first while I only went on the Fan Fiction and Reader Art pages. And then i remember wondering vaguely: "what is this, whatchamacallit, forum thingy? And that's how I got here. smilies/smile.gif
Edit: I also remember that the first section I ever looked at was QQ, but my very first post was in Books. Sorry for that random bit of info smilies/wink.gif

I was looking for my own website, Legolas rules (http://www12.brinkster.com/galenfea), and did a web search for those words, it came up with a thread called '1000 reasons why Legolas rules' and, out of interest, clicked on it. It came up with middle earth mayhem and I decided that this site looked like fun. The rest is history. smilies/cool.gif

I was on a different Tolkien forum for a long time (the name of which shall remain anonymous, to spare me personal embarrassment), and one of the people who wrote had the link here in their Sig. I came and registered (one year ago tomorrow smilies/wink.gif) and promptly got hooked on the forums, where I lurked around the New Silm thingy but didn't post much anywhere until about February smilies/smile.gif.

The day when I found this site... ah, what a day that was...

Allow me to brace myself for a crop of rotten vegetables coming my way: I used to be a Leggy-bopper. Granted, I loved other parts of the movie too. Anyway, I was surfing the web and found a Legolas fanlisting. I put my name in (28th member! Ha!) and then went to the "fun stuff" page. The Barrow Downs name generator(s) were on there. Well, of course I wanted to know my elvish name (no, it is not my screen-name), so I went there. Then I checked out the fanfiction a few days later. Then came reader art, an attempt at the chatroom, and finally I became curious at the forum. Now, normally I dislike forums a lot because they're either full of slander or way too strict and unfriendly, but this one was pretty close to a fine balance. What could I do but join? I'm also happy to proclaim that the 30th of April is my deathday! I'll have been here an entire year! smilies/eek.gif

Cheers,

One day, while I walking down the primrose path and generally minding my own business, I encountered a burning bush that said: www.barrowdowns.com (http://www.barrowdowns.com) shall tell you your Elven name, but shall simultaneously cure you of your embarrassing fetish for skinny English actors from Canterbury, by brainwashing you to read the Silmarillion, just to seem cooler to those who have read it. There might be free beer in the offing as well.
"Well, if I get to seem cooler..." I thought...
And the rest is history.
Though I am still waiting for that free beer.

I've been here for nearly a year, as long as I had Internet. I was serching anything Tolkien-related (the only worthy theme on my mind), and BD was among the first finds. I stayed and never regreted.

I just recently realized that there is something else to it. Last year I was in Prague with my students, and there on the Charles Bridge we were told about one spot on its railing which (in case you rub it)will grant ANY wish in the course of a year. My students rushed to rub the cross on the railing, then urged me to make a wish too. I can't say how it came to my mind, but I wished to meet someone spernatural. It was silly I forgot about it. But now...isn't it the most supernatural place with most supernatural skeletons, spirits, wights etc?!
And just supernaturally great people!!

It took me something like a year to find the forums. I was looking for a story online (The Quest for the Dumbo-Themed Mandarin Orange with Purple Polka Dots Umbrella! actually), and this was one of (I think the only) the sites that had it. I sent in one of my fanfictions (which was ignored, I believe smilies/rolleyes.gif ). I didn't know about the forums at all, or didn't care rather, until I started at Allscifi.com and CouncilofElrond.com, and then I just decided to check this place out, and now look where I am!

While reading LotR I bought a book "Tolkiens Welt" (in German) and at the back of it there was a list of the 50 best internet-addresses about Tolkien! I checked some of them and liked the BD best.

My twin sister, whom I think you know as Merri (or Merry?) told me about this site last year. I think she was a regular poster until our mother banned her from all use of the computer because she wasn't studying hard enough! She told me to apologize for her, because apparently she abandoned an RPG thread or something that she was in charge of. She says she'd come back but she thinks you're going to eat her alive or something, as I said in another thread in The Shire. Anyway, I didn't have time to actually do any registering or posting or what have you until this year, so here I am!

Well today is my one-year anniversary of being a member of the downs! smilies/smile.gif

I remember it vaguely because I think I went on the internet on Christmas Eve because there was nothing to watch on TV, and went on here to see what everyone was talking about (like I did many times), and I decided to take a chance and join. I think I first posted in the movies forum, but don't try to make me find that first post because I think it is long gone now.

This experience of being a member of the Downs has changed me much. I am now a much more outgoing person on the net, and it has encouraged me to do many Tolkien related things that I wouldn't normally do.

I love this place, it is now one of my little homes on the Internet smilies/cool.gif

Two years ago, when FotR was first shown, my classmates were all musing over this site that has an Elf-name generator. I was quite amused (though I was not an LotR fan then) and went to the site they told me to go to. After many months of playing with the name generators and stuff, I went to the chatroom. However, people there were not discussing ME-related things. Since I was a nouveau fan looking for others who can relate to me, I decided to see the forum for myself. Mine's not that interesting, but, Mr Barrow-Wight, you may find it flattering.

Being a New Zealander, I get a free magazing every year on the LotR movies in the Newspaper, in the Fellowship one (which I still have, you won't believe some of the stuff you get out of the papers here, sometimes it's almost as crammed of Tolkien as TOR.net) was an interview. Tehanu's interview, in fact. As a side note is written...

"There are hundreds of internet sites devoted to The Lord of the Rings including several with name generators. One (www.barrowdowns.com) provides your Orc name, your Hobbit name, your Elf name, your Dwarf name as well as guessing who you could be in Middle-earth."

...followed by...

"In another internet tribute site (http://fan.theonering.net/writing/stories/files/whistler_greeneggs.html) a fan has rewritten Tolkien in the style of Dr Suess"

That is actually how I found TOR.net as well. Then, sometime after sneaking off to see LotR at midnight at somepoint (Mum had forbidden me to see it again, something about 10 times being enough) I got fed up with lurking and joined the Forum...I had lurked since November 2001!

Yeah...so there's my story. Be proud, Mr Barrow-wight, your site was in a special souvenir magazine celebrating all the best things about LotR!! And was mentioned *before* TOR.net smilies/biggrin.gif

Erm, not far off!

The other odd thing about me joining the 'Downs was that some months before I found A.N.Other Forum and I was pondering whether to join that. Alas, I found it far too confusing so I didn't bother, and I assumed all forums were equally as confusing. Then I joined and after just a few posts didn't post anything for months because I had a supremely dodgy computer. It was reading the RPGs that got me into it again.

I mean, that is, when you push Submit Reply button, than suddenly remember to put extra things in, and push Submit Reply button again, just as the blue line in the lower side of the screen already started crowling right (Internet Explorer, dunno bout other browsers). The effect is to have double posts, one with and one without addition.

I stumbled across the Barrow Downs while looking for a name generator several years ago. I spent a while at the fanfiction section but didn't actually join the forum for several months. Then I did, I got hooked on the Shire RPing, discovered Crazy Captions.... and the rest is history.

Erm, not far off!
How about "Ms. Downs," then? Or "Ms. Barrow"? ;)

As they say when playing hide 'n' seek and getting close to the 'hidee' - you're getting warmer! ;)

Well since you provided a homepage link, Lal.... I guess I now know the truth... but I am afraid, for me your real name is Lalwende.

I discovered the Barrow Downs in much the same way that Maeg did. I was looking for a LOTR's name generator, as well as some good RPGs and fan fiction. After reading a few games in the Shire, I decided I would join myself. It seems like such a long time ago! I only ended up playing one RPG game in the Green Dragon.

Gosh, it's been over two years and I don't exactly remember what I was doing. I was searching for LotR-related sites in general with the desire to expand my knowledge of the books I believe, and came across the Downs either by a search engine or a link from another Tolkien site.

Heh! That's right! Although I'm sure most of the other Downers wish that I hadn't.

For those who remember her, it was all because of Ithaeliel. I had been absolutely obssessed with LOTR for about six months when she told me about this great site with a name generator plus a forum she had just joined ('tis a shame she has ghosted away). I checked the site out a few times, but didn't join until a month later when I was done with school for the year. The rest is history.

I still find it amazing that I was only 13 when I joined (so young) and 14 when I joined my first RPG. Now I'm 18- a legal adult. :D

I came across the Barrow-Downs when the moderator of a Lord of the Rings group on MySpace posted a Tolkien fansite list. I wish I knew about it before!

There -was-, I'm not sure it's there anymore, a guild on Neopets dedicated to the Barrowdowns itself. Very cute, however there were just two members (including me) That person messaged me and raved about the site.

Ta-da! I've been haunting the chatroom (and more recently, the forum) for five years now! ...My Neopet is still "dying".

Good luck reaping any benefits until you're about 25. The next few years are nothing more than shorthand for debt accumulation while you try to figure out what sort of career has good potential to pay it off without killing you.

I found the 'Downs stalking my big brother. I'd recently read the Trilogy and possibly seen The Fellowship... can't remember exactly the order. He was being a jerk and wouldn't answer my questions, so I stalked his internet history to www.theonering.net (http://www.theonering.net) and to here and, quite frankly, I preferred it here.

All I wanted to know was what kind of stone Glorfindel's lil green bridge rock was! That's how addictions start, children. "All I wanted was..." ;)

I found the forum twice, actually.

I remember a friend telling me about a site that named the top five Tolkien-related websites, and the Downs was listed on it. I was just looking for information in general at the time, and I played with the name generator. I was also drawn to the fanfiction. (The fact that there's a genre heading entitled "Legolas" still scares me...)

I wasn't big into forums (I'm still not) but eventually curiosity and boredom got the better of me and I clicked the link to check it out. One thing led to another, and soon I was involved in the Books forum, then I RP'd for a little while. Sadly, I had to leave after only a short time to deal with RL issues.

I found it the second time some about a year later when someone suggested I Google my name for fun. Turns out I don't actually exist. So, I Googled Roa_Aoife, which is the screenname I use everywhere. I found a link to the Memorial of Members thread, and I found out people actually missed me here. So I decided to make everyone's life more joyous and return.

Barrowdowns.com was recommended as a cool Tolkien site by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal in their online section. I'm very impressionable, you know. ;)

Funny how forgetful I am -- I know the above is why I checked out the main page, with the name generator and other goodies, but I don't remember how I made the leap to the forum. I'd never posted on a forum or any other kind of internet group before, so I must have had some special reason to think "Hey, this is the very first internet community I want to become a part of!" I assume I was really bored one day and decided to check out the one part of the site I hadn't been to, and read something and wanted to respond, but I can't actually remember it.

Premature senility.

Jeez...I can't remember how I found out about this board...

Wait! It's coming back to me!

[LONG, DRAWN OUT STORY]

Back when I still had money and spare time, I was a big GameBoy Freak. I bought the FotR Game (the one from Black Label; Man, that game was horrible.) and I needed a bunch of help on it. (I didn't say I was a good GameBoy Freak.)

I found another message board that dealt with the game, and eventually I stumbled on The BD. This was a couple of years ago; the first movie still hadn't come out yet. I kept reading the boards (I still hadn't registered) until just after RotK came out, then I became a bit too busy. I don't think I even had time to look at a computer, let alone post on a message board.

Now, a couple of weeks ago, I was reading another board I like, and someone linked to a thread here. Something clicked. "Hey...this place seems familiar..."

So, I bit the bullet and registered (yesterday).

[/LONG DRAWN OUT STORY]

And yes, I know I'm using fake codes to add to my post. Just one more rung on the Ladder of Geekdom.

I seem to recall that a good friend of mine was once a member of the Downs. She has since forgotten her username and all that and gave up on it, but she told me about it and I checked it out.

After messing around with hangahobbit and the name generator for a while, I found the forum and said, "ooohhh!"

So, that's the fascinating story of how I came to the Downs. Next week: How :smokin: got his cigar.

I believe I joined right after I read the trilogy and possily after I watched the third movie. I just googled for LotRs websites and this one looked fun. I read some of the fanfiction that used to be on the front page, played around with hanghobbit, then noticed the forums. I joined under Wilwarin Bluemoon, then forgot my password, couldn't get it back and joined again under this name. :p Now I have the 'Downs as my home page, so it's the first thing I see when I get onto the internet, and I just go right to the forums, rairly do anything else on the main page. ;)

I found the Downs from some other people at school who were fooling around in computer class and found the quizzes. I kept coming back mostly because of the fanfiction, and also sometimes the quizzes and games - I was around off and on for about a year and a half before joining the forum.

Lets see I can owe my finding and signing up here to my friend who is trying to convert me to lotr. If not for her I would have never found this place. i still kinda have no clue what I am doing on here. I shall try though!!
