This one goes out to everyone including the oldtimers!

I was just wondering how you found this EZboard and The Barrow-Downs site (considering you've been there). Please tell me here. Thanks.

You told me a while back about the site, then you told me when you made this EZboard.

What's a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket, anyways?</p>

Re: How did you find the Downs?

I remember how you found it, burrahobbit. You were here when there were just 4 of us...then 8...then 18.... You deserve a personal title (like Galpsi who is now known as The Unquiet Dead)....

Please choose a User Level Title you would like to appear under your name on this board. Make it approriate to the theme of the Downs and yourself.

I think it was 25 hobbits. Someday Wight I want my own personnel title, but not yet I think.BTW, I like the quizes on your site, they are fun and I know they take some time and creativity on the part on the writers. So thank you Wight.

I found my way here from Entmoot. I`ll whisper this in case Bmilder hears, but I prefer the Barrow-downs which is why I spend a lot more time here.

Re: I feel so special now. Kinda warm and fuzzy.

I've changed Barrow-Wight to just Wight so as to not me confusing with my Sig.

Shade of Carn Dûm is the minimum required for a personal user level title- and it only takes 250 posts. So get busy! <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)">

Kee answering the original question because I'm kinda curious how people are finding the place.

<img src="http://www.barrowdowns.com/images/posticons/bluepal.jpg" align=absmiddle> Here's how I found Barrow Downs

Well by RKittle's request as to keep to the original topic i shall say this: I was fairly interested into seeing if there were any Hobbit or LOTR fans or sites out there so I simply went to my favorite search engine (northernlight, which has btw never let me down!!!!) and typed Hobbit. Soon i found the 25 hobbits page and i wanted a site that wasn't just for the movies (which the first two rankings were) so I came here and was so pleased i have decided to stay with the Barrow Downs!!(as well as vote whenever i am present!!!)
And that concludes my tale of how i came here!

Goodbye and farewell wherever you fare and may your eyries recieve you at the journey's end!!!!

How I found the site?
Hmm, actually, I don´t remember clearly since I´ve known it for months already, but I deem to have found it while searching for Tolkien sites on Altavista or through a banner ad.

By the way, could I have a custom title, too? If so, I have to ponder which one could fit...

I did a search for middle -earth pages got xenite and liked the discussions -but thought the way the thread listings ran across and off the page a little bizarre [your st up here is def. one of the best]
... went to 25 hobbits and like Suldaledhel I looked for the first non-movie site and voila-TRAPPEDin a barrow.[my wife will certify this <img src=frown.gif ALT=":("> ]
I have found this to be along w/ the gloves off- M.Martinez page to be the most interesting and informed book discussions[ although I like here the most cause I am allowed to say Arwen xenastar and xenarwen and... to reflect my strong feelings about... well I better not go there <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

I should have turned left at Pismo Beach. [rabbit posticon]

A friend in my department was trying to find movie graphics to show me at the office one day. He raised various sites as a result of his search (which I think was conducted on good old Yahoo). I think we went through twenty-five etc. I later re-examined a few sites from those links and found that this one was fun. Hence...

I had found other Tolkien sites. Planet Tolkien, the Bonfire Glade, Entmoot. They were alright, but I knew there must be a better one out there. When I was searching altavista despairingly one last time, I came across the downs and have stayed with it since. <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)">

By the way, do you think the name of Gwaihir, a noble eagle, looks quite appropiate with 'Haunting Spirit', 'Barrow-Wight', Shade of Carn Dum' -- or most insulting of all, 'Pile o' Bones'! -- written under it? I like this name though and I don't think I'll change it.

Well I have found this overwhelmingly great constructed site through 25 hobbits, and it was the highest ranking site not dedicated simply and only to the movies. So I tought Id give it a try and Im never gonna leave now that I have ( sorry Ron cant get rid of me that easily!!!! <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)"> )

I did a search on the MSN homepage (which uses the Alta Vista engine, I think?). I just went back to see if I could remember specifically what pulled me in, but wouldn't you know it, I couldn't recreate the hit. So I guess that does you no good whatsoever. Oh well. Anyway, I found it, and I like it. I love the tone of the page and the quality of the content. Keep up the good work, Ron!

Re: How did you find the Downs?

My first post on a Tolkien Discussion Board was at 25 Hobbits. I asked a question about Tengwar, and when no one there could help, I found a link to The Barrow Downs and came here and asked.

That was back on August 18th. Ron helped me out on that one, and then I dissapeared for about a month...exactly, and came back the 18th of this month.

So, really, I've been active here about 10 days now...woohoo! But seeing as this is my 60th post, I guess that's pretty good!

Ok; I checked out the NG's. Those sucked.
Then I learned there were these boards. Typed in Tolkienforum. Got a board. Saw other links to other boards; and here I am, much to the chagrin of all I suppose.

BTW; what are the ranking systems here?
Not that it matters all that much to me anyway.
Just kinda curious.

That was my first post? I could've sworn I'd been here before. Oh, that's right, I was only lurking. I found this place because it was part of The Old Forest's EZboard Ring. I found the Old Forest because someone advertised it on the UBB board &quot;Council of Elrond.&quot; I found Council of Elrond because someone on the Ringbearer board told me about it. I don't remember how I found Ringbearer. Probably a search engine.

I think this site is dark enough to add to my EZboard Ring, so I'll go do so now.

How did you find the Downs?

My little sis found it - she was looking for Elijah Wood pictures. Of course, she didn't find any here, but I thought the articles and the name generator were pretty cool. After a bit of surfing, I clicked on the forum link. The rest, as they say, is history.

Somebody had told me about the coming movie - get this, as of last October I didn't know anything about it! - so I started searching for info. Wound up at 25 Hobbits eventually, bored with the Tolkien-superficiality of theonering.net. When you've read the LotR 30 times, it's not very illuminating to read that 'hobbits have furry feet.'

Barrow-downs was number three at 25 Hobbits, and the first site I picked. Didn't even look at the other sites. *shrug* Did all the tests (couldn't believe I knew all those Elven words after all these years). Howled at "Dude, Where's My Ring?"

Then I spotted the Forum...

There was a great discussion on Denethor going on, with Mithadan, Sharku and Mr. Underhill. Brilliant. I was at the office until 10pm responding, seriously hooked.

I discovered the Barrow-Downs in January 2002 through Yahoo Internet Life, which had a list of various types of websites after the movie came out. (And I found the YIL site in a magazine story about the movie.) I paged through the various ones, not looking at the community sites till the end. But when I found this one, I was delighted to find discussions on the books - the forum fascinated me immediately! I was so happy to finally discover others who shared my passion and were as anxious to talk about it as I! And here I still am, captured in this barrow...

Well, let me see. Galadrie1 told my brother about it and then he made me find out what my orc name was or something. Later I saw him doing some of the quizes. Then I did the quizes, I did them all and was still bored so I tried the forum. Been hooked ever since. smilies/smile.gif

I'm a member on several discussion boards, both Tolkien and non-Tolkien. On one of these (ghosts) I found a link to ANOTHER discussion board (cryptozoo) where I found a link for The Barrow Downs. And I must say I've been addicted to this site ever since.

Funny how ghost discussions can end up in Tolkien discussions instead. smilies/biggrin.gif

I found it by searching on Excite[?] it was before I knew about Google, and it took me to 25 hobbits and I then perused the top sites for something that did NOT focus on the movie[s], someone within a day or so asked what books were canonical and...my wife has been threatening to divorce and or destroy the computer ever since [well the first year anyway] smilies/rolleyes.gif

Hmmm... how did I find this site? Well, like a lot of you out there, I really don't know the answer to that. But it would have probly been through some search engine of some sort. All I remember is going through the main site first and checking out the various generators and fan fics. Sadly though, I did not get this nick from your name generator Barrow-Wight.
After a couple of days of searching through the main sight, the forum link caught my attention, and well, ever since then Iv been posting away, kind of.
Heh... Iv been a Wight for too long now, I think I need to post more.

I remember exactly how I found it...

It was back in my In-love-with-Legolas-but-I-like-LotR-too days, waaay back in February. I went to the Legolas fanlisting site, and then I found a link to the BD name generator. After finding my names, I explored about a little bit. It then became a favorite site, but I didn't join the forum until haunting around for a couple of months. There ya go.

Can't believe I haven't seen this thread before...

I found the Downs thru my daughter. We had been all excited about the movie since first word came of the green-light 2 years or more before it actually came out. I saw that she was in the chat after apparantly discovering the main site from a web search. I began dropping in while at work to see what kinds of topics and whatnot were being discussed and branched off to the main site and forum from there.

I am not exactly sure how I came here, but it was after the movie. After seeing the movie, I became interested in LoTR, and soon read The Two Towers and Return of the King. I suppose from there I just searched around for LoTR websites and then, that fateful day, I found the link to the Barrow-Downs and clicked on it.

It was actually Ithaeliel who brought me here. One day in about early May at lunch, she started talking about a cool site with a name generator. Since I was completely obsessed with LOTR at the time and was getting desperate looking for a good fan site that was updated often, I asked Ith for the site name and checked it out. I tried the name generator and read the fanfiction section every week for about a month.

At the end of May, Ith came up to me and said that I just had to join the forum because it is so awesome. Well, since it was finals week, I had to wait until school was over to join. Finally, June 7 came, and I happily joined this lovely forum that I love so much.

So, it is all thanks to Ith that I'm here today. Three cheers for Ithaeliel!

I had been haunting several message boards looking for a home. None were adequate. One was too small, one was too big, one was too hot, one was too cold...wait, wrong fairie story. Anyway, I came across a webring that this site was listed on. There were less than 20 members then, if I recall. I started a thread and Gwaihir kind of flamed me (its still there, look it up) and I almost left (showing the importance of first impressions people!) but gave it a second chance....

I found the Downs back in March, 2002.

I think I was looking for a name generator, found yours, and then stumbled into the forums.

At first I went all wide-eyed and merely read every thing in every forum on every topic. I longed to sign up and start posting, but for some odd reason, my computer kept shutting down whenever I tried to register.

Finally, after a handful of scowling weeks, I managed to register my username, DarkRose.

I have been here ever since, besides a month-long absence due to heavy school work.

I have been here for quite an amount of months now, although no one really knows who I am. smilies/smile.gif

I can’t remember 100% but I believe it was in early 01

I was looking for games, story’s on LOTR when the site I was in (I think it was 25 hobbits) mentioned The Barrow Downs. I first looked at other sites but I liked the look and sound of the Barrow-Downs the most. I then joined up but I changed my email account and forgot my password. Later in early January02 I checked the site out again and rejoined. And the rest is history.

I was doing an exhaustive search, trying to find out where my peculiar looking editions of LoTR came from, and started contacting Tolkien forums, looking for experts who might be able to help me identify my books.

I didn't even bother to make up a Middle-Earthish nickname when I registered, because I didn't figure I'd be sticking around.

Mith was kind enough to reply to my post, and, if I remember right, was able to lead me to a very helpful author of a Tolkien bibliography.

After looking at his reply, I spotted the "What Other Books Are You Reading..." thread, and thought it would be fun to reply to that. Then I came back the next day to see what replies were posted there, and found another interesting thread...then another...then another...

Almost a year later and I'm still posting. That has to be a record for me. Oh, and I still have those "peculiar-looking" LoTR books. But I don't dare touch them now. Turned out they were American first editions! smilies/eek.gif

Mr. U. - Ah yes! 'Did Frodo fail?' That was excellent, one of those threads you really felt a conclusion was reached. Your points were marvelous, it was a delight to be convinced of another point of view.
Denethor... we were really getting down to subtle levels there (despite Mithadan's wry comment: "whack, whack. Poor horse!" Ha!). But the holidays and the release of the movie intervened, and I started re-writing the movie in "Second-guessing Peter Jackson."

My, we've had good times, haven't we?

Many long years ago (about two and a half, to be exact) I was looking for Tolkien-based art and ended up at Planet-Tolkien. I visited their EZBoard and got really hooked to the forum lifestyle. Over the next six months, I traversed the wide world of Tolkien EZBoards, including The Old Forest, The White Council, Entmoot, and several more. I ended up opped at three or four of them and racked up about 3,000 EZBoard posts. Now, this was back in the day when The Barrow-Wight went by RKittle and posted regularly at other boards, not to mention this one. smilies/wink.gif His undeniable charm and panache led me to click the link in his signature, and soon after, I posted my first greeting at his EZBoard in August of 2000.

Unfortunately, I got rather burnt out on posting, and I think I take the superlative of Oldest Member to Least Posts ratio, so if you want to talk to me, come into chat and scream KKKKAAAATTTTEEEE! This also works if you want to get kicked out of chat. No guarantees on which result you may get. smilies/wink.gif

I think I found the 'Downs in late February. I got the link from the "Tolkien site of the Month" in a guild on Neopets... I lurked around, trying out the name generators, then tried the chat room in early March. I started coming back to the chat room every day, and people were always talking about discussions going on in the forum... I felt kind of left out of the chat because of that, so I joined the forum, and I'm so glad I did! The chat room is alright, but it's almost always totally silly. I like the forum because there's great in-depth discussions going on -- I've learned so much in the 5 months I've been here!

I found the downs while searching for paintings of Silmarillion charactors. I had heard of this place at other sites though, usualy it is that name generator. I have a question about the art section. Is there perhaps a search function for the art or a place where the art is gatagorized? Also, is there any place to comment on the art?

Comment: I am impressed with the forum here, I was pretty socked when I read about the Silmarillion project that is going on. Unfortunately I'm only reading it for my second time and wouldn't be of much help among the knowledgable people but I enjoy reading the discussions.

Agkh! I hate to admit it, but I was surfing around on "Legolas is very sexy or something similar sounding"-pages when I found one with 'other LotR-related webpages/sites'. I clicked on all of them and saved them in my favorites-folder "'til I get time". I looked on all of them and (Oh yes, forgot to mention, BD was included on the list) I felt I had to "vote for us on TolkienWorld.com". I saw it had a high state, and I checked it out (quizes(sp?), mad-libs etc.) I tried the chat, but to be honest, you scared me away... then, because I like the site to much to forget it, I looked at the forum, joined, and started to reply on the threads... Through the back door of course!

I was surfing the net, looking for Tolkien sites, as I had just finished rereading the LOTR and wished to discuss stuff, especially the Silmarillion since I was beginning the Silmarillion CLiffnote's project.

I was glad to find the Down's as discussions actually carried some weight here. I tried talking about Feanor on one board and got one response that had nothing to do with my discussion question. At least I get responses that are on topic most of the time.

the late "lordoftherings.com" had a collection of links, one of which led me to the late 25 hobbits website, and of course the Barrowdowns was number 1 (or two) on that list. I looked at it, did all of the quizzes (there were only a few back then), and hung around in the quiz chat room for a while. Then it became a frequent favorite, until late last year when I finally looked at the fora. Now the main site is something that I rarely visit, but the Fora have become a regular part of daily life.

Hum, for some odd reason I thought I had already posted on this thread, so I haven't bothered with it. However, reading back through the last few pages I found I didn't post. How strange.

Anyway, a long time ago..hmm..early '01 I think it was, I was founding my own EZboard forum based on politics and specifically the views presented in Ender's Game. While going through the "recently visited" in one of the posters on my forum I found this place. Soon I was posting every so often. Then when the site converted to PHP-UBB, I came back and reregisted under this new nick. Unfortunatly, I waited about a month before coming back, making me the 492nd person to sign up (instead of a much earlier number, but oh well). Strangly enough, it was only about a year and a half ago I finally discovered the chat.

hmmm, i remember a friend emailing me one bd quiz and getting hooked. took me quite some time to finally notice the forum and join it. scantily i may add... anyway, it seemed like a different crowd populated the downs then, and streaming in and out as i often do, one can really get a feel of how the site is growing and changing. for example, you can tell that new membership now is mostly through word-of-mouth among the young, is that right?

hey i missed the downs! removed to japan for grad studs and now, in this totally different culture, logging in here feels like communicating with earth from a totally different planet...

I was posting at one of those lit. help forums, the kind where people go to ask about themes of a book or what have you because their lit paper is due in ten minutes and they haven't started yet. smilies/wink.gif I was mainly in the Shakespeare bits, but I noticed they had a Lord of the Rings forum too, so I wandered in one day. Lo and behold half the posters in there had a www.barrowdowns.com (http://www.barrowdowns.com) link in their sigs, including someone called Einafets the Ice Princess, who I was pals with. And then one fateful day I clicked it and registered here...

... and almost a year later I started posting regularly... smilies/rolleyes.gif

I can't really remember. I just popped in one day I think. But I didn't register on the forum until much later. I thought the form thingy was to long and that it was to many questions. But one day I just did it, which I don't regret. It' soooooo cool here. smilies/biggrin.gif

Quite boring story huh? smilies/tongue.gif

Well, it was only 2 years ago when my elder son (now 17) started reading the Hobbit and LotR (in German), that I got myself some English copies and was soon more of a fan than he is.
In spring 2002 I bought a book called "Tolkiens Welt" (by Michael Nagula) and there was a list of the best Tolkien sites in it, including the BarrowDowns.
Being rather a luddite, I had hardly ever touched a computer before, but my son taught me how to use the internet so I could get in touch with other Tolkien-Fans all over the world. I was absolutely fascinated, and soon joined the BD. Since then I have read ever so many interesting and thought-provoking threads (though I don't post so often) and have fun in the quiz-room.
My sons now tease me about sitting for hours "staring in the Palantir" as they call it!! smilies/biggrin.gif Who would have thought that!

I was searching for my Elvish name and I went to google and I found the barrow-downs name generator! I didn’t like my name so I fiddled around. Later I saw the forum I searched the web for the perfect name and here I am!! smilies/biggrin.gif

Actually, I found the downs while looking for a hobbit name generator. Then I just kinda started going to the chat, and then registered and now I just can't live without the downs

Funny, that's exactly how I found it too. smilies/biggrin.gif

My friend and I got really interested in lotr, and started searching the internet for good sites. My friend found the barrow downs, and I checked it out. For a long time I just read the fan fiction and barrow-comics ect. I thought I had explored the whole site until that same friend told me about the forum, and recently convinced me to join. And I love it!! It's great! Im so glad it was put together!! Thank you everyone who created this site and who are keeping it going (including all you other posters smilies/wink.gif )!! THanks. smilies/biggrin.gif

The name generator. smilies/biggrin.gif Actually, I found a different one, but I didn't like the name I got so I tryed the BD's version.

After poking around the site for a few months and chatting, I decided to give the forum a try. So here I am!
