We now approach a freshly raised mound, with five crudely made wooden crosses planted, and in the middle was a giant rock, in which these words were engraved:

Here lies five signatures, expunged by the oddities of my mind, and its penchant for continuously collecting random quotations.

1) "A few days ago, I would have done anything to keep you alive. Now I just don't care." Arvin Sloane, Alias.

2) "A man stares humiliation in the face and he asks, 'Do I know you?'" Will Truman, Will and Grace.

3) "Then plump came the Atomic Bomb. At a blow, the balance which had now seemed set was rudely shaken...The three hundred divisions were shorn of much of their value." Sir Archibald Clark-Kerr, British Ambassador to the Soviet Union.

4) "Be careful what you shoot at. A lot of things here don't react too well to bullets." Captain Marko Ramius, The Hunt for Red October.

5) "In Sneffels yoculis craterem kendele bat umbra Scartaris Julii intra calendas descende, audas viator, et terrestre centrum attinges. Kodfeci." Arne Saknussemm, Journey to the Center of the Earth.

May they rest in peace...others will be joining them soon...

We walk a little further. There, we see another mound. The madman! you might think. Five more fell here. Who shall stop him? The Valar have not avenged themselves. The mods and the admin in their barrows have let him go unpunished. Maybe a catchy line will make him rue his regular habit of randomly changing random quotations.

6) "If I had a thumbtack, I would have made a Scud missile." Lorelei Gilmore, Gilmore Girls.

7) "Fool that I am, that I did not tear out my heart the day I resolved to revenge myself." Edmond Dantes, The Count of Monte Cristo.

8) "Ma, quit scaring my friends with cake!" Tino Tonitini, The Weekenders.

9) "This is the greatest imposture since Genghis Khan! Who is responsible for producing all this rubbish?" Adolf Hitler, Fuhrer of the Third Reich.

10) "But I just like saying 'manure!'" Salem, Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I actually don't understand why you quote Hitler.

I just collect random quotes. That's it. If I happened to offend anyone with a random quote of mine, please notify me immediately. We don't want to start World War Three with a silly quote.

Thanks, Balin999. Your opinion has been helpful.

Well, it is your right to post what you want and I surely don't want to start any quarrel, but I think it's strange that you post a quote of Hitler. That's all I'm going to say about that quote. If you think that it is necessary to post it, I'm fine with that.

I have finally waded my way to the end on this thread, so now I can post. smilies/smile.gif

This quote was quite short-lived, but I like it a lot, so it may come back eventually. Those of us who fence are just like everybody else. No, I take that back. We are cooler. That was from a girl in my fencing club. Great quote, even though she's a raving HP fan. smilies/wink.gif An Igloo should be strong enough to withstand freezing hobbits and howling sons of Fëanor. That was the result of a mad-lib where I decided to make every word LotR-related. I later changed it to Mind the howling sons of Fëanor. For quite a while, I also had Naur dan Robert Jordan! (Fire take Robert Jordan!) As you can see, I don't like The Wheel of Time. PM me if you really want to know why. I really like my current sig though, so it'll probably be around for quite a while. smilies/biggrin.gif

Time for a new quote, but with the same theme... RIP When the Dead do walk, seek water's run,/for this the Dead will always shun./Swift river's best or broadest lake/to ward the Dead and haven make./If water fails thee, fire's thy friend,/if neither guards, it will be thy end.

Replacing this lovely siggy:

It was a single cello playing/ A forgotten Christmas song/ And even on that battlefield/ The song somehow belonged/ And as he flew away/ The angel did take note/ That where he found this music played/ One always could find hope

With another one of a similar theme.

EDIT: Now that the holidays have passed (though hopefully the spirit remains), I'm replacing this siggy:

So tell me Christmas/ Are we kind/ More this day than any other/ Or is it only in our mind/ And must it leave when you have gone away/ It's different now/ It's changed somehow/ And now you're here to stay

Happy Holidays,

As we walk towards the graveyard's gate, we notice that a crowd has gathered a little outside it. We push our way into the gathering, the stench of the decaying signatures greet us, their letters being eaten by plagiar maggots.

You hold your hand over your mouth, in an attempt to hold back vomiting. Then, as the feeling of nausea passed, your disgust turns
to resolve, and anger towards the perpetrator. But doubt assails you, realising the seeming invincibility of the...mass quoter? Can any mortal stop him?

11) "[The Soviets] finally realized...that ten thousand warheads was enough to fry all of America eight times over when three or four times was probably enough..." Dr. Jack Ryan, The Cardinal of the Kremlin.

12) "And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it." Melchizedek, The Alchemist.

13) "Call up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry. Don't know how lovely you are." Coldplay, The Scientist.

14) "You're wondering what a place like me is doing in a girl like this." Evelyn Carnahan, The Mummy

My past sigs: RIP, my dearies!

"Whatever a man prays for he prays for a miracle. Every prayer reduces itself to this: 'great God grant that 2 and 2 be not four." Ivan Turgheniev

"What would the world be once bereft
Of wet and of wildnerness, let them be left,
Oh, let them be left, wildness and wet,
Long live the weeds and the wildnerness yet."

My Finding Nemo one (fitting, that smilies/biggrin.gif ): "Yes I'm a natural Blue".

The Tolkien one (Smith of Wotton Major):
"For some the only glimpse
For some the awaking" - this wonderful line's time was unnaturally short

because I replaced it with an equally short-lived mad lib to ring in ROTK:
"Movie", said the fan, "ROTK movie! I have watched you to the last, You have never pleased me and always I have scowled you. if ever you came from the forges of Peter Jackson, go now and run with full hou$$$e." which actually happened, right?

I'll also lay to rest my Edward Lear bit of fluff:
"Our Sieve ain't big,
But we don't care a button, we don't care a fig,
In a Sieve we'll go to Sea."

for a different piece of fluff, of course, but this time by our dear Profesor - it seems he and I have this little thing in common: late to bed, late to rise *when possible* smilies/biggrin.gif

Before his eyes/ The music dies/ But he will always hear me.

That was one I kept for a while, and it was actually quite fitting (Like the Finding Nemo one was for you, Evisse the Blue. I love that movie!) but I eventually stuck to this one:

You cannot choose your battlefield/ The Lord does that for you/
But you can plant a standard/ Where a standard never flew.

And I like it so much I think it will stay for a while. smilies/smile.gif

Edit: Of course I forget about the sig I had befor that. *Sigh* I can be so silly sometimes. All Hail Denethor, LSoG AFKot?: Lord Steward of Gondor and Firey King of the Oooops can't say that word here. (added 1/11/04)

As well as the full version of these signatures:

Disease:Tolkienitis, HS (Hobbit Strain); Symptom #34: In the middle of a onversation, subject will pause, stare at speaker for a while and say with smiling seriousness: "You have nice manners for a thief and a liar." (1/11/04)

Can any mortal stop him?

That question continues to haunt you as you walk towards a derelict monastery near the graveyard. There, you find a library. Books were kept there that were almost untouched by the passage of time. You pass through the shelves, looking for the proper book. Upon seeing it, you took it, brushed off the dust, and read the cover.

"Of the Random Quoter. 'tis the proper one!"

You turn to the next page, and read.

"A Barrowdowner liked too much quotes, and cannot decide which one to choose. So he created the Random Non-LotR Beast, to chew on quotes and dispense of them soon thereafter. But the beast went berserk, and took its master.

"Now the monster waxes in might each day, as it consumes more sigs from every source possible: sometimes from other Barrowdowners...and, rarely, even from its master..."

You hear a dull thud and, from the window, you see quotes, freshly killed by the beast. Sometimes from other Barrowdowners, you repeat to yourself. Even from its master...

16) "So does that mean I can just stand here and look hot?" Gorwingel, Barrowdowner.

17) "Anger makes dull men witty, but it keeps them poor." Elizabeth I, Queen of England.

18) "Father of the exploding Fire-Elf." Finwe, Barrowdowner.

19) "Merry is the gayest of all hobbits." Dominic Monaghan, TRL.

20) "Sadly, one fact of life is that waiting slows time down. Am I right, people?"

I liked The Pirates of Penzance quote, and it's still so fun to sing, especially with three brothers to join in (bass, baritone, and tenor-rapidly-deepening-to-bass, respectively).

For I am a Pirate King! And it is, it is a glorious thing To be a Pirate King!
For I am a Pirate King! Hurrah for the Pirate King, hurrah, for the Piraaaaaaate King!

We can make an awful lot of noise, especially with a rousing song like that. smilies/cool.gif

But I get tired of too much silliness, at least when it's the same in my profile for too long, and especially when I've got something better. My next is from "The Battle of the Pelennor Fields," one of the most lyrical prose passages I've ever seen, and which last entranced me in the Kiev, Ukraine, metro. It takes something awesome to distract one from swaying and jerking in a subway. smilies/smile.gif

Wow...a Chip player. What's your best score? Did you finish it. Will I ever stop asking you? Oh, wait...

--------------------

You turn back to the book at hand, and flip the pages furiously. Is it here? you ask. Then suddenly, you stop, and read:

"How to kill the Random Non-LotR Beast:"

OK, then... you think, and continue:

"'Switch it off.' That's it?"

A loud groan comes from outside. Fearing the worst, you grab a broomstick(good choice... smilies/rolleyes.gif ), and furtively creep to the door.

"That's it! 29's all I can take!" said a voice.

"Y-you're the creator of the Random Non-LotR Beast! I thought you were dead!"

"Nah," said the fickle Downer. "But the 'Random Non-LotR Quote' thing is...I think I found myself a nice, new, permanent(I hope) sig for myself."

--------------------

"So, that was it?" an irate reader demanded.

21) "Patience is not only a virtue, but a job description."

22) "How many hobbits can fit in a bottle of Worcestershire sauce?"

23) "Familiarity breeds contempt, and children." Mark Twain, mortal.

24) "It is well that war is so terrible. We should grow too fond of it" Robert E. Lee, mortal.

25) "Common sense is not so common." Pastor Dennis Heppner, mortal.

26) "I intend to live forever - so far, so good." Turambar, Barrowdowner.

27) "The worst thing at being an atheist is feeling a deep sense of gratitude and not knowing who to thank." Philip Yancey, mortal.

28) "More beer!" Lush, Barrowdowner.

29) "Semel insanivimus omnes." That's Latin. It means, "What kind of dumb-cluck do you take me for?" Chanticleer, The Canterbury Tales.

Nilpaurion, I swear I had not seen your new sig when I thought this one up five minutes ago. I looked at yours and thought, "Hey, I'm not as original as I thought I was! How disappointing!" Actually, I find it facinating that I'm not alone in my thinking.

Let's take a moment to remember those that have passed, and reflect upon our most recent loss: "That's a really ugly hat you're wearing."

I was going to wait until March 1st to change my avatar and signature, but you know I was watching the Oscars and had nothing better to do, so here it is.

First of all, I changed my sig from this:

I am, I believe, alone of all our race, the only man in human memory to have been shipwrecked and cast up upon a deserted ship.

to an old Scottish song. And the avatar was changed to the aurora lights. Yes, I changed them in honour of St. Patrick's Day. So the song's not Irish...

I recognise your old signature from Umberto Eco. Are you an appreciator? I love those books dearly.

I think that when I have weeks of summer vacation ahead of me, I would appreciate it. As it was, I was only able to read it sporatically due to school and homework, and I had only gotten to page 100 and something before I realized I'd never finish it in time to return it to the library. It 's also one of those books that you have to have to read for a few hours everyday to really "get" it all in (he painted some lovely word pictures). But what I did read of it I enjoyed greatly and I plan on tackling it again (as well as the Rose one) this summer.

My first and most appropriate, to which I shall one day return:

And inside they saw the strangest little man, dancing the strangest little dance! He had saucepans and kettles hung all over him, he wore a saucepan for a hat, and he crashed two saucepans together as he danced! And then a series of quotes from modern English icons that I found amusing and surprisingly relevant:

I think it was John Lennon who said: "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.", and that's how I feel. Although he also said: "I am the Walrus, I am the Eggman" so I don't know what to believe. ~ Tim Canterbury ~

Please excuse this post, but I've finally got myself a siggie and I wanted to see it. It's not appeared in any of my old posts, so I'm hoping that it will appear on this one.

As this is my first, I have no old quote to consign to the graveyard. I can make one up, however:

"How extravagent you are, throwing away women like that. Who knows? Perhaps some day they might become scarce!" -- Louis Renault, from Casablanca

Fordim, it's nice that you have a signature now! You do share one problem with some other newer forum members, unfortunately, so this is a good opportunity for me to remind everyone of our guideline for signature length. Please note that the new Downs policy is that all signatures must be three lines or less as they appear in your posts on the board.
( Barrow-Downs FAQ (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/showthread.php?t=6010) ) This is often a problem with poetry, since even a four-liner takes up more than three lines. That's why we ask members to find a way to keep their poem within that three-line maximum. Thanks! :)

RotK Soundtrack: $15, Hobbit vest:$20, 3 opening-day tickets for RotK:$30, Fabric for Éowyn costume:$50, Starting an orc sing-along in the parking lot after the show: Priceless RIP That sig served me well. from January, to now, late July. The prices are in some places invented, since my brother's Frodo vest came from a rummage sale, so the actual cost was less than $1 US (it was a bag sale), but that wouldn't be very believable. We did start singing a parody of Y.M.C.A. called U.R.U.K. at 11:30 pm in the theater parking lot after seeing RotK for the first time -- we got some funny looks for that! :D :D

Then you obviously don't know classic movies :D

And it is indeed a good film - Gil-Galad, the quote, if I'm not mistaken, is from 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure' (is that the exact title? I'm never quite sure...), which remains an incredibly classy film, and was, like, a cult in the early 1990s. You know 'Dude Where's My Car?' ? Yeah, that's shameless plagiarism from Bill and Ted, and it's proud to be so. You know the turtles from 'Finding Nemo'? Once again, inspired by Bill and Ted. Legend, and glad to see it has a place on the Downs, Perky! I believe another fan is Imladris - a phrase including 'most excellent' was in her sig for a while, I believe...

And now watch me be completely wrong and it be a completely different film...

One of the sigs I recently noticed was The Only Real Estel's - a few rather cutting remarks about M. Night Shyamalan's newest thriller, 'The Village'!

Imladris

Your statistics are fun! Have you tried counting how many sigs per person are posted here?

My random non-LotR quote thing has 29 signatures alone! Add to that the other offsprings of my fickleness, and that should propel me to the top! THE TOP!!!

My adoration for your penchant for numbers is like chastity for the Romans - adored, but rarely emulated. Alas, for having flunked Calculus, I lost all love for Math! Failing does that to me. :(

Anywhen I have new old sigs to post. Dosvidania, my siggies!

Here Digitopolis we have our meals when we're full and eat until we're hungry. That way, when you don't have anything at all, you have more than enough.
I haven't read The Phantom Tollbooth (yet), but a book in Math I possess happens to have a part of it, Milo in Digitopolis.

Where do they get the courage . . . to fight against Death himself, knowing that they must ultimately lose. Such [is] the nature of the medical profession.
This is from Clear and Present Danger by Tom Clancy. I have discovered some more sig-material quotes from him (not involving the Cold War, the CIA, or nuclear weapons, mind you!) Maybe I'll use it sometime after I run out of multiple-choice questions, but I get too ahead of myself.

And now, I have created (three, so far) multiple-choice questions that shall become my signature until my home page is finished, and I return to imitating HI's sig (albeit with my name).

I'll post them here once I complete all three. Until then, fare thee well, until they bring back down the fare rates! Thank you, and good day!

I have had this signature for quite some time, as it commemorates a great summer time, but as that summer is now only a memory, so too must be the quote.

Farewell to thee:
Ni And welcome to the 'Downs must go to:

Farewell to my last siggy - it lasted just over a month, although seems longer for some reason. Today we'll go witch-hunting, and tomorrow, we'll hide, and it'd be the witches' turn to find us...

It made me shiver when I first read it, although maybe that was just in context. It's from Terry Pratchett's 'Good Omens' - class book, very class. I enjoyed those two Heren. I had once considered placing a quote from The Squatter into my signature but I didn't for fear of being labelled a stalker.

Somewhat belatedly, I will place my now old signature into the thread, that being Green Ideas Sleep Furiously. Unfortunately, though I tried, I never could find a green idea that slept furiously. The closest I came was finding a green idea that snoozed in a somewhat surly manner. And it was most uninviting when it woke up to find me gawping at it...

I performed magic, I'm going to leave you here with the story that justifies you.

I was making myself a cup of tea, as I am wont to do, and everything was going quite unspectacularly up until a certain point. Bear with me, it's a good story. I put some water in the kettle and left it to boil. I then placed a mug on the counter next to the kettle, and put a teabag into said mug. I then (and this is crucial so pay close attention) took a teaspoon from the drawer and put it into the mug. Unremarkable? I think so.

I turned towards the fridge and retrieved the milk. As I turned around, my mind probably filled with moderately pleasant and unworrisome thoughts, I ventured to perceive the mug. And lo and behold! there was not one, but two teaspoons in the mug.

I conjured a teaspoon.

I performed magic.

The Ents were seen in Dunland, looking for: a. Saruman and his secret stash of Longbottom Leaf; b. Entwives; c. Taters; d. Legolas and Gimli. They haven't paid the entrance fee.

Much Elven-blood can be found in: a. Helm's Deep (?); b. The Prince of Dol Amroth; c. The Lórien Blood Bank; d. Alqualondë (ooh, harsh!).

At the end of the Third Age the Dúnedain population of Arnor: a. were all dead; b. were rebuilding...what was the name again? It's been so long; c. wait. Didn't Hal take all of them?; d. can breathe easier, with Aragorn gone and all.

The Company abandoned the passage of Caradhras because: a. Frodo lost the Ring in Hollin; b. winter there is bad for Hobbits; c. Gimli stepped on a hole and fell to Moria; d. Leggy forgot his shoes.

The curse on Húrin's Children was caused by: a. a loophole in the free will clause; b. Túrin, the angry man with a talking sword; c. Morgoth (yeah right!); d. stupid staring contests.

(NOTE: Questions 3 and 4 are the complete version. I had to chop a word or seven to make them fit in.)

My personal favourite was question 5 (on account of "stupid staring contests"), although it looks like a lot more liked question 2: Vy ze vay, thanks, Ms. Esty, Ms. Helen, Ms. Evisse, Ms. Nuranar, Ms. Ainaserkewen and NK for the appreciation! :)

My current sig (the line above I intend to . . . ) is a quote from Tom Clancy's Op-Center: Mirror Image, although it sounds eerily like something from Tolkien.
