So, the american BD-ers are having their own convention. personally, i cant and dont want to travle halfway across the continent. So why not have a convention specifically for Canadian and northern US BD-ers?

I'm totally game. I, too, cannot afford to travel down to the states for a convention. Something a bit more local would benefit alot of us Canadians, eh? smilies/tongue.gif

Sorry for bothering you as I'm not a Canadian but may I come too? I know my way around Alberta (Calgary, Banff,Sylvan Lake, Red Deer etc) and can get a plane to Toronto quite easily. I think I may not have enough money for this year but if you hold one next year I'd love to meet you.

I am stuck in NB. I just got posted here from Edmonton. But soon I will be posted to Ontario...something I am NOT looking forward to. (No offense to Ontario people, its just the circumstances of my move uhm-well to put it bluntly-suck.)

Well, no complaining. At least its not Afghanistan.

Manelwen! Finally! Someone who's lived in my beloved city!

And yeah, we are all kinda scattered, aren't we? I definately don't want this in Saskatchewan (no offense, it's just so bloody boring in that province). But I've noticed everyone either lives in far western or far eastern Canada. (so far) And the only compromise I see is Saskatchewan..and that's just not...well, uh. Let's go to Nunavut instead, eh? smilies/tongue.gif

Ah yes, and HAPPY CANADA DAY! (Belated, I know. But I was busy that day!! smilies/biggrin.gif)

I've never been to Newfoundland. i don't really travel in Canada much - i've never been further west than ontario (where i live smilies/tongue.gif) i've gone to PEI though. i do most of my travelling in the States (i've got tons of family and friends there), and i go to India when my family's financial status allows us to take the trip (and when it's "politically" safe to go there).

This is from a while ago but Galadrie1, I will see you tomorow.

Perhaps what we could do would be to have several conventions, like one for each probince or something. I think that this will be way to hard to try to organize but if somebody wants to (NOT ME!!) go ahead and I would try to come.

Melephelwen
09-19-2002, 08:23 AM
Sorry to mess around here, as I'm not Canadian, but in *counts on her fingers* 2 years, I am perhaps going to Canada for a few weeks. Don't ask where, 'cause the arrangors(sp?) are also concidering Estonia. Don't wanna go to Estonia yet.
And in 4 years I'm moving to Canada for a year (either Vancouver or Toronto).
Just in case you wanted to know smilies/biggrin.gif

Well, I'm hoping to go to Toronto (No offense, any Vancouver's who may be around) but there's that small economical thing. I can't find any precise numbers, which can tell me which city is the cheapest.
Anyways, if you hold a Canadian BD-thing, can it wait 4 years?

Isilya
09-20-2002, 05:31 PM
I too am Canadian, and d@mn proud of it!! Fredericton is where I hail from!! I think that Toronto or Ottawa would be the best place to hold it, seeing as how we're all spread out.

Summer is good, spring break is also a possibility, but they might fall on different dates.

If we do summer, then we're going to have to get the date picked a half a year in advance. A lot of people will want to know this so they can plan their vacations around it.

Rosseiliantiel
09-23-2002, 06:57 PM
Summer would probably be very difficult as everyone is going places unavoidably at all different times.

Galadrie1
09-24-2002, 03:22 PM
Spring Break is no good for me (even though I'd probably never be allowed to meet you guys, anyway smilies/frown.gif). My family always visits our relatives during Spring Break... and I can't get out of that. That's the problem with Spring: It's too short to do more than one big trip, so if you've already got something planned, that's all you can do. In the summer, though, you can fit in lots of stuff, and it's easier to change around your schedule... maybe... I don't know what everyone else's lives are like, so...

Isilya
09-24-2002, 03:38 PM

Edmonton's awesome! Our mall? smilies/eek.gif crowded, is all I can say. You want to see the dolphins and you're beating your way through a mob! ^_^ Good shopping though. There's this one shop with all these fantasy gidgets and gadgets, and there were SWORDS! ^_^ I wanted to get one, but you need to be 18 to get a weapon. Drat. Although, coordination, cost and in some cases parental permission might be difficult...humhumhum...

gollum*elf*pup
10-29-2002, 04:17 PM

definitly order them in advance. I'm not sure if they sell them @ the door.

I thinki it would b better if we met at the steps of the ROM. Just cuz im not quite sure where its being held. 4:30, at the steps to the ROM, yes?

11-16-2002, 07:13 AM

Ooh, tell us about it!!! smilies/biggrin.gif

Rosseiliantiel
11-28-2002, 06:11 PM
Ooh, where to begin...
First of all, it was really REALLY crowded and there were some exceptionally dumb people behind us who called Hobbits, 'Muggles' and could not tell the difference between a hunting knife and a sword. But I digress.

It was a big, long, glorious walk-through type thing and along the way there were cases with props from the movie, such as weaponry and jewelry and various variousities. You name it, they had it! The mithril vest was beautiful! And they had the One Ring near the end!

So you went through all these rooms that were themed and decorated as places from the movie, they had Fangorn Forest (with fake trees and artificial fog, but well done), the Golden Hall (complete with fire pit and carved columns), Helm's Deep, Orthanc, and basically everywhere else. In some places they had up whole sets as they were in the movie, such as Saruman's office-thing (he's very messy, books everywhere!).
They also had strategically placed TVs with snippets from the movie.

Then at the end, there was drumroll a gift shop. With a whole lot of really random stuff, such as LotR Sour Gummies. But they also had some really nice elven-type clothing, and Losth and I bought shirts. All in all, a tiring but good day.

Oh, for some sort of teleportation device so you all could have come! smilies/frown.gif smilies/frown.gif

While Americans flock to see movies about a rap-singing kangaroo, oversexed honeymooners and a child-stealing witch called the Tooth Fairy, Canadian moviegoers are sticking to The Lord Of The Rings, with Chicago closing quickly in the box-office rankings as it moves into more theatres.

BW, Sharku, Mr Underhill and I have been monitoring this thread and others like it. While we understand why members would want to meet one another, we are a bit concerned and wish to emphasize that care must be taken if you choose to arrange such a meeting.

First, the Barrow-Downs itself is not involved in organizing such meetings and does not intend to be in the future. These meetings are arranged by individuals or groups of individuals and we take no responsibility for the outcome. The decision to meet is made by individual members at their own risk. We are not providing transportation, accomodations or security and are not involved in the choice of locale or the agenda.

If you choose to meet, individually or in groups, please think it through, plan carefully and be careful! Meet in public with other persons present. Make sure that others know where you are going and who you are meeting. Think twice before providing personal information to other members such as e-mail addresses, telephone numbers or home addresses and do not send anyone money or credit card information.

We're sorry to throw a wet blanket over this but we are concerned about peoples' safety and want to emphasize that this is not an "official", sanctioned event sponsored by the Barrow-Downs. If you choose to meet, good luck and we hope that you enjoy yourselves. But please be careful!

Hello, all! Yes, I too am a Canadian Barrow-Downer.
I'm up two hours north of Toronto, around Collingwood, the skiing place. (I was in Toronto yesterday for an audition, though, and I'll be living there next year if I get accepted. Hopefully either George Brown or Humber colleges.)
I was priviledged to see both of the exhibits in Toronto: The Fellowship one at Casa Loma, and TTT at the ROM. Unfortunately, I didn't know about this meeting thing then, or I would have tried to help out with the organizing.
I went in costume with one of my friends, too! But the lines were too long for me to get into the gift shop. We looked from a distance. smilies/rolleyes.gif
Nice to see a few Torontonians on here though. And did someone say they were from Sydney? I went there once.

Thanks, I hope to maybe go up there for a small trip in the summer. I have been to so many places (New York, Paris, Rome, London...) and Vancouver (or Victoria) is one of the places that I would actually consider moving too (Vancouver has the most amazing Park I have ever been too, and the city is so wonderful to walk around and everything) Though every time I have ever went there it rained. I proudly wear my Roots team Canada shirt many times throughout the year.
I have also visited the east part of the country, which is enjoyable, but different. Though I think I would need to take a longer there to experience it more.

Any Canadian Barrowdownie who lives anywhere near the west coast who has "The new VI" channel, be sure to tune in on Thursday(tomorrow) at 10 pm, they're doing a behind the scenes look at the ROTK movie. Lots of spoilers I'm sure. As well, they're doing some kind of trivia contest on the 10th but you have to live in Victoria. For more info, PM me, and I'll get it to you.

No, you are not the only Canadian, don't worry!

I didn't get to go to Trilogy Tuesday, but some people I know that went found that there wasn't a whole lot of people, at least not at the theatre they went to. Aparently ROTK started at 10pm, 2 full hours before it was officially released! They had about 30 minut breaks inbetween each movie, and there were different contests, like one you got a T-shirt if you had the best Nazgul scream!

Lovely how you said Calgarian first and then Canadian... you think you're better than us people from the prairie, eh? well, you are probably right  No, darned I've been living here for too long!

I don't know about... wherever in Sask. you live Valier but over here EVERYONE seems to hate this city... then they go ice-skating, or they play hockey, bike around or hike during summer.... and of course, there are a few (admittedly not many, but probably enough) bars and such. I think it's the small town mentality... people want to be in big, busy metropolies rather than easygoing small cities. Personally, I love it here, much better than NYC-sized Buenos Aires.

Disclaimer: My use of the word "eh" pre-dates my immigration to Canada. Eh IS a word and I've been using it since I can recall.

Edit: And to answer Valier's last question, the weather has behaved yesterday and today. It rained!! that's something you don't see very often in December. And today it's zero degrees!!! I couldn't be happyer.

Farael
01-02-2006, 03:26 PM
Well, the thing is life in the prairies is too Shirely (or should I say Shired?) so it's a natural fit that we like Tolkien's work.

Seriously, summer in Winnipeg is really like The Shire.... nice weather (For the most part) and if the mosquitoes are not bugging you, it's so green and pretty... people working on their lawns, deer jumping around my backyard (although that happens during winters as well) squirrel and other such animals with many children running and biking around.... and during summer, as I'm most likely not going to school, I get my six meals a day! :D

Glirdan
01-02-2006, 09:45 PM
Gil, update that to 5 in prairies, and three in the second biggest Province, great (ya, right, that's why we have to do the stupid literacy test and EQAO testing stuff) Ontario. And to top it all off, all three of us live in the beautiful (more like polluted) city of Sudbury.

Speaking of us three (Wilwa, Wayne and myself) where has that butterfly flown off to? And how did she carry a big, ugly (joking Wayne) Gobiln with her? I'll get to the bottom of this...tomorrow.

Getting back on topic... If we are to have a Canadian convention, why not make it halfway and go to Thunder Bay. Or somewhere in Manitoba?

gralin musicteeth
01-18-2006, 09:08 AM

Just as a side thought, I should be able to accomodate some people at my place this May (I think the 25th or so) but I don't really know you guys and I'm not sure I'd be fine with having a bunch of strangers over at my place... even if it is tolkien loving strangers :p

hmmm, it doesn't have to be a big personal meeting, we could work out a cyber-meeting on some chatroom?

That'd be easier to accomplish... if anyone knows how MIRC works, we could even get a barrow-downs server I think =P but it'd work as slowly as a cyber-turtle so we might as well use an existing server.

Doesn't the BD have a chat?

Wow...we have our own thread?! This is too sweet. I'm from Alberta by the way in case Gil-Galad hasn't mentioned it yet. Not that I know him face to face, but I do know what his face looks like.

It would be lovely to try and have a convention, I think we'll need more people though. Enough that an actual reasonable number will attend, but we Canadians are a shy lot so maybe I'm shooting high.

Start saving up kiddies and maybe in few years our dreams will come true.

Glirdan
01-27-2006, 06:35 PM
I would start saving, but I have band trips to save for not to mention college or university. I would love to meet you all face to face, but I think a Cyber-chat would be just as fun.

Farael
01-27-2006, 09:34 PM
A convention in Winterpeg!! then we can all dress up like Aragorns and Eowyns.. with the odd Legolas or Gimli. I've been growing my "Aragorn-hair" and now I'm even growing my "Aragorn beard" (or in other words, I have long hair and now I got lazy and I'm not shaving)

Yet a chat would be fun... if everyone has mIRC (which I think is probably the best program for chatting) we could meet somewhere some day... I should be more or less available next weekend (but take into account that I will NOT be available during the Superbowl)

Gil-Galad
01-28-2006, 12:22 AM
i still say cyber-chat is better then meeting face to face for now, some of us are probably still in our late-teens and if i know my mother, she wouldn't trust any of you, well maybe Esgal but i have to meet her first face to face

Esgallhugwen
01-28-2006, 05:31 PM
Well perhaps a chat would be fine for now. Then in a couple of years or so we could all get together. I suppose Winnipeg would be the best option (that's going to be quite the car ride for some of us), except for those who are lucky enough to live in Manitoba.

But yeah it would be cool to actually meet some fellow BDers face to face. Don't let my chatty-ness on the downs fool you, I'm quite shy in RL.
