View Full Version : A Memorial of Members

This seemed like the best place to put this topic.
Ever remember old Barrow-Downers who have left the site or...have been asked to leave the site? Do you miss them? Well, this is a memorial to those members. Here you can write a lament for those whom you miss, or just simply state that they are gone. It is just for memory of the members we have lost.
Yes, I know I have not been on here since the Downs was started. And this topic would have been much better to be started by a moderator or someone of that sort. But I just thought about it the other day. And I thought it would be an interesting topic to start.
I will start with the most recent member I just found out about a few moments ago---NazgulNumber10. Although leaving for such a {ahem} strange and unexpected reason, you have to admit, he was quite a laugh around the Downs. And we will miss him.
Is there someone anyone else has noticed gone for a good length of time? Tell about them here.

I honestly don't have to admit that. I would have to dishonestly admit it.
Until recently I probably would have said Balin999 first, but I think I don't need to say that anymore. There are others, though. Saulotus, gamegie, quam, and on and on and on.

I miss galpsi
Glenethor, though I hear his departure from the Downs was a pretty frustrating event for everyone involved, will always be remembered by me as witty and kind. And the John Lennon avatar was pretty cool.

Yes. I left a lot of people off of my list. Couldn't possibly name them all. (I'm bad with names.)

Bruce MacCulloch
I miss Steadfast Sam (gone before I joined though) and KayQ.
Hey, I even have to admit, I rather liked Gimli, Son of Gloin. I will miss that pesky Dwarf.
Glenthor too, though I was not around when everything happened, I was shocked to see him gone. The thing I remember most was his tracking of "how many times" he watched LotR - what was it, 35 times???

Shame on me for missing those two! But I really keep thinking I'll see them again soon! Let's hope I'm right!
If I'd known that Gil had left us, I would have had him listed. I appreicated his presence on this board. I have even tried to emulate his writing style for my fan-fiction (not the same tyep of story, but in style).
He will be missed by many smilies/frown.gif

I miss Glenethor, too...I think it was more than 35, Joy...or maybe I was exaggerating: it is quite a feat). I stopped coming to the Downs and came back after a few months not seeing him here, which made me miss him right away. Made me wonder (maybe I have to find out for myself...)
I have never really had a chance to have an exchange with Gil, but I have felt his touch in this place. He's a real talent (been to Tar-Ost the other night... glad to see it's still there)
NN10? Oh man, the guy looks like my brother when my bro was his age.
I think I remember seeing Bruce at the Middle-Age club. I think I made a remark that made me deserve his stick-out-your-tongue smiley. Something to do about being childish. I think that was his last post. If I was responsible for that, my apologies to all who miss him. I miss him as well.
But I'm glad to see some people come back (like Starbreeze).

Y'all should trust your Barrow-Wight!
I have not been missed being here half as much as I should like to have missed being here! I've been in and out of the hospital, and will be back in again Monday. Perhaps a week thereafter, I will have time during recovery to visit for a spell.
Springhill Medical ain't Imladris, and Dr. Scott ain't Elrond, but my ailments should be healed by then.
Divertuculae necessitating a bowel resection. It could have been worse, but Providentially I was taken to the right emergency room on a day when only one hospital was doing surgeries down here in the South Farthing. Furthermore, my brother (a scrub tech) was on duty to make sure that I got the best surgeon. A day later or a different hospital or surgeon would have resulted in a colostomy! (Do not tell the young ones this story except in the bright morning sun, lest they faint from fear!)
I've been writing/directing/playing in church dramas. My hair is long again and I can play Jesus.
I've enjoyed the FOTR Extended DVD and cannot wait for THE TWO TOWERS.
I notice that a few more, by and by, have read THE HOBBITS down in the Fan Fiction Section. It would do my heart (if not my intestines) good to see a few more reviews when I get back!

Gilthalion,
Boy, it's good to hear from you. Even those of us who are "younger" posters and don't really know you in person are well aware of your 'legend', fanfic, and RPGs.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune, and hope you are feeling better. Rest up, and get back to the Downs.

Rosa Baggins The sweetest, most loveable person I found here. Irrespective of my state of mind, Rosa's posts always made me smile.
Gimli_son_of_Gloin He was exactly what he professed to be, a twelve year old... and he made us laugh!
Laidheliel Helped us keep the 'game' in Role playing game alive, like the rest of us youngsters.
Gayalondiel She inspired me to be a better person. Often putting up with my silly tantrums, and helping me get over things.
Celebmundoiel After a shaky start at RPGing, this brave girl worked hard to improve her skills and gave us one of the very best RPGs(Mir Ned Pan Ind) here, ever.
Manelwen The best RPGer we have had here, bar none. Her posts encouraged me to strive for the best I could be.

Ah, Samwise. Who can forget Samwise? But another I havn't seen in quite a while. One who, when I first came, really stuck out in my mind. I'm talking about Frodo Baggins. (The Frodo with his name spelled exactly: Frodo Baggins. There are many around here.) Yet I do not know if this member has just not posted in a while, or if he/she has left. But I havn't seen Frodo Baggins around much lately.
Aye, Samwise and Frodo Baggins both missing. What are we to do?

Samwise: I think she still comes on but it must be briefly, because I haven't seen her for a while. We used to PM a lot and then I got married, had to move, lost internet access for a good long while, and it never started up again. Sigh.
Rosa Underhill: She was a lot of fun, haven't seen her around in ages.
Glenethor: No idea what led to his leaving (if it was RPG related, I've never played an RPG in my life, so wouldn't know). He was always fun, though.
Nuranar: She had some good stuff, haven't seen her for quite a while though (I think Nuranar was a she, I'm pretty sure).
Maril, sort of: She appears but not often.

Hi guys! Good to hear from you. I've been prodded away from my fanfiction for a little bit (sorry, not LotR-related). No, I'm not dead. Or, well, am still dead. Er. Something like that. 156 pages and finally done. Now editing, but I think I've overworked my Beta-reader: she seems to be broken. Around sixty people have emailed me praise and accolades. I am a review-addict now. An original character people asked about has taken off with a few black humoured short stories of his own. What can one do?
Oh. Looks like I've been on the Downs a year now. Happy death-day to me.

Raefindel,
You said you missed Auriel Haevasawen, but she is very much alive and active. She is playing a Warg down in the Shire in an RPG that Pio and I have--the Long Winter.
That sometimes seems to happen. Folk start off posting mainly in one forum or area, and then switch to another. So you may think they're gone, when they're just realocated!

So many new folk and old folk that an old hobbit's head fairly swims!
(Prayers much appreciated, reciprocated, and proven efficacious!)
I am up and about now, and a somewhat thinner hobbit than when my adventures with the surgeons commenced. I'm of half a mind (some would say that is my usual state) to take a picture of their orcish healing procedures. Tomorrow I return so that they may remove the hideous Frankensteinian staples from my belly!
My long-suffering soulmate, the Mrs. Gilthalion, promises unguents and remedies that will eventually remove much of the scarification. Her tender ministrations of ointments should thus remove the worst of a long scar that is now stapled from above my navel to near my nethers!
Internally, all is well enough. I have little enough of my hobbit-like appetite however, and may never regain the extensive waistcoat I've lost in the course of this adventure.
I thank you all for kindly remembering me, though it has been long since I could participate in the RPG forums (which I am delighted to have had some role in starting), and longer since I could participate in the other forums. My last article for the website was "Saruman" and I've really not done anything of a creative nature since then. (Except in small theatrical writings and performances for my Lord, for which my new thinness and long hair leaves me better suited.)
I have immensely enjoyed the Extended DVD and hope that the rest of you have as well.
After the first of the year I will be seeking new employment, and cannot answer for my time. Until then, I will try to pop in here and there and nose about a bit.

Though I have never taken part in any of the threads and rpgs here, I always enjoyed reading them. I found the rpgs featuring Cimmerian, Amanaduial, Elenna, Nevtalathiel and all else who played with them, the most interesting reading. They were always so full of life and adventure.

Well, I haven't been here that long (just about three months) so there aren't that many people I've detected missing. But I do kind of miss merlilot...just 'cause she was a fellow Pippin fan and I always perk up when I encounter those. Then there was Kithrèna Greenarrow Legolas
...she was very exuberent. I wonder where she went. And then there's Arwen1858, she was here for a very little time, but posted a lot and seemed really nice, and then BAM she was gone again.

I guess we're like ghosts at the funeral, wondering if we're mourned, heh. I finally finished that fanfiction, but my Beta reader is struggling with the size.
Now I have these people beating their drums for a sequel.
How large did yours turn out to be, I wonder? I suddenly have great respect for voluminous writers.
I personally find it difficult to read or write LotR fanfiction, unless it is parodies or far OOC. Serious Tolkien fanfiction makes me sad, reminds me that Tolkien will write no more...

A lot has happened since my last post!
My job as a laboratory technician fell away with the Japanese consumption of South Farthing hard wood chips for the making of their paper. (They now import eucalyptus, but that's their problem...)
While looking for other work, I took a part time position as Administrator at my church. (For what it was worth, this actually cost me money since it paid rather little, but they needed the help.)
One week later, the pastor and the youth leader announced they were leaving the church and their spouses for each other.
This devastated the entire congregation, as you might well imagine. Long story short, I was ordained and asked to be the Interim Pastor.
So its been busy, busy, busy!

Why, hello everyone! Yes, I'm actually posting after not having posted in... what... half a year? I've been thinking about all my BD pals and decided to pay a visit. A lot of things have changed; the forum has gotten a completely new look and it's moved. There are a few new members here that I don't recognize, but still many I do remember :). I hope the roleplaying these days is as high-quality as it was when I frequented the Downs. Bethberry, dearest, your moderating is impeccable. Does Brinniel still come often, or Amanaduial the Archer? I'll drop by the roleplaying forums to see how things are faring.
What's going on with me? Well, goodness, let's see... my high school's music department (whose orchestra I play violin in) just got back from a competition in Santa Clara, CA. We did extremely well: aside from our choral department sweeping all their divisions, the chamber orchestra was invited to collaborate next year with-- yes-- the Boston Pops Symphony. We also were awarded Best Music Department. I'm so proud!
Music has practically taken over my life. I have not a moment of time for going online these days, much less frequenting any sort of board, but I'm still an avid Lord of the Rings fan! And, yeah, my little Legolas shrine is still above my bed... *ducks projectile vegetables from anti-Leggy-boppers*I miss you all and think of you often! Talk to you again soon!
Amore,
Ithaeliel
P.S. I started taking Latin this year. It's the best western language ever!

Just so I can get this straight, are we mourning those who have passed back into the world of the living here? :D
Hello Ithaeliel. Good to see you back. :)
I must say that this is a rather interesting thread to read (or should I say re-read), although many of those mourned were members long before I joined. I suppose there will always be a natural flow of members drifting in and out. There are many who have posted on this thread in the past who haven't been around for a while. Birdland and Maril spring to mind in particular.
Still, having mourned doug*platypus's absence about a year ago, I am pleased to see that he has returned and is now posting again.

Some of my favorite quizzers were Elrian, Gilthalion, and Telchar, even though he was here in January. I haven't seen Bruce MacCulloch or Mat Heathertoes/Russandol for a while either. :( Zifnab was a good chap, too. We have some swell new quizzers though. I like 'em at least! :D

According to his profile, Gandalf_theGrey's last post was 05-17-2003. I miss him deeply. I have only one burger-king-goblet and it's the Gandalf one-- and I think of GtG every time I drink out of it, or wash it, or put it away. We squared off more than once in fisticuffs which saddens me now. I pray he is blessed and graced wherever he is.

There are a few people I miss. I don't know what happened to Elven Maiden Earwen :( Where did she go?

Oh, I miss Gandalf_theGrey too :(
He wrote such wonderful visual filled posts, and I will remember him for those. I had forgotten though that he had not been here for quite awhile. I hope though that he does someday come back to the downs. That would be wonderful.
I do though get sad when people leave and never come back. I have never liked it. But then I do know that in the life of a forum, these types of occurances are commonplace. But they still are sad. Especially because I tend to be quite the quiet type, so I never really know why, or if there is an actual reason of why they left. I do know that most of the time they leave with no warning. With most just dissapearing into the vastness of the internet.

I say: three cheers for all the great posters who have left indefinitely, but three equally grand cheers for all the great contributors who are still around posting away! Does Brinniel still come often, or Amanaduial the Archer? *Raises hand* Erm...present? ;) Thanks though, Ithaeliel - I'm not sure whether to feel complimented or overlooked! ;)
I agree though with the mention of Brinniel: I haven't really seen her around that much since December-ish, when the idea of the game she and I were planning finally kind of...fell apart.

Feel complimented- that was my first post here since last October, and I'd hardly even glanced at any of the forums before I came running to this thread to proclaim my return ;). Glad to see you are here! Brinniel is in my English class; she hasn't talked about the BD for months! I'll have to ask her what's going on; I think she may have become too busy with the dance team. It's pretty likely, the team having competitions and shows and games to perform in and all.

I really miss Roa_Aoife -- she and I joined the Downs at almost the same moment and we immediately began RPing together at the Green Dragon. It got off to a rocky start after a misunderstanding which led to some bunnying of her character (by another member, now also departed, not by me :p ), but we worked that out and did some wonderful writing together.
The good news is, her absence from the Downs should be temporary only, as she's said that she intends to be back in September. Still, people do tend to drift away.

I don't know if I've been missed or not, but I know it's been forever since I've been here. I had some issues logging on for quite some time, I don't know what it was. Also, now that I am back, I notice that hundreds of posts in my post count have disappeared. Also, I need to get my little hobbit lass avatar back. I must relocate her!
What have I been doing, you wonder? Maybe you wonder...
Anyway, I've been really busy. I spent a few months being unemployed in the spring of this year, then I got cast in a stage production of The Threepenny Opera and made some money from that. I also went back to work at this living history museum I've worked at sporatically, and I worked as a food vendor at the local ballpark... glamorous, no?
Come fall I got cast in a small political satrye called Laura's Bush and I started working as a substitute teacher. After that play was over I started rehearsals for She Loves Me and I'm performing in that right now. I also got my first commercial! I'll be shooting in within the next week or so.
So, I've been a busy little lass, but I'm gonna try to stop in here more often, because I still find the discussions here to be more in depth than any other board I've visited in the last year. Glad to see so many familiar people still around :)

Her name there is Mippin. It seems that a lot of people who were once here quite a bit have come less and less since they've joined smaller fora that sprung out of here. It happened to me, and I only belonged to two other smaller fora. I was gone a lot during 2004 and the early part of this year due to that, and I think that's what happened to a lot of others too.

Alkanoonion,
A long wait in the halls of Mandos does not sound good! Glad you got out.
Thanks. I had fun with that post in I Found the Entwives, although in one sense it's a "futile effort". Since Teleporno hasn't shown his nose in either Land of Rohan or Minas Tirith since December 2003, I doubt he will do so. There's the possibility he posts on Tolkien sites like those under a different name today, but my gut says no. He is certainly not on this site. It wouldn't be hard to recognize someone with his particular mindset (the underlying ideas I talked about in the post) if he was here in Books.
Hmm.... I do love a mystery. Perhaps the only way to get an answer is to secure a list of film graduates at "KU" in 1992 (presumably Kansas State or U of Kansas if that is a typo) who then went on to work for U Kansas. There can't be too many of those! Don't know, though, if he'd spill the beans. It's possible he had second thoughts about his interpretations re the Entwives, but decided to keep the posters squirming!

A Question: Does it often happen that members who has not posted, check in now and again.
The reason I ask is that last night when I checked who was online, I thought we had gotten a new member. It turned out it was a member who had not made a post since 2004 GaladrieloftheOlden, this struck me as kind of odd, but what do I know.
Hey it seems I have reached a 1000 post's. This must be celebrated.
