View Full Version : Posting Images on the Downs

As has been stated elsewhere in topics devoted to images, it is important that those members who do use images in their posts do not download them directly from another site (hotlinking is what I call it). That is to say, any image you intend to add to your posts must reside on a space owned and controlled by you. If the image resides on someone else's space (ie. ninecompanions.net or any other site), then you may not use it in your posts on the Barrow-Downs. The reason for this is that every time a hotlinked image is viewed, its size is deducted from the owners bandwidth limit (if they have one), and if their limit is low, they may end up getting charged extra by their site host or even have their site shut down. Obviously, we don't want that to happen, so please do not hotlink images.
Thanks

Does this apply to avatars also?

yep it all uses bandwidth.
If you don't have a host and you would like you avatar hosted, send it to me at jwahl@bigpond.com

I link directly from my own sites. Is this okay with you?

Read what BW wrote. "Any image you intend to add to your posts must reside on a space owned and controlled by you".

Okay, thanks. I'm not too bright-eyed when it comes to reading things.

Thanks, BW for your explanation here and to my (probably a bit uninformed) PM some time ago. I fully understand now, and, rest assured, my little sleeping Frodo on Amon Hen avatar is hosted on my own web space! smilies/smile.gif (In fact, I think it is the only thing on there besides my old avatar, Gandalf and Pippin riding towards Minas Tirith on Shadowfax. I'm not very good at keeping up websites.)
Cheers and thanks again!

Not to worry: my brother hosts my avatar.

My site already contains a large collection of Lotr avatars if anyone wishes to link to one, and I don't mind adding a few extra images if you want to link to one. Just let me know.

I have a question that might be considered stupid, but it's been bugging me for quite some time.
When the Barrow-wight says this:
If the image resides on someone else's space
Does that include images found on a Google search? I ask this because I'm not sure if Google could be termed as "someone else's space" or a true site because it's a search engine right?
So forgive this question if this is stupid.
Cheers!

Does that include images found on a Google search?
I would assume so, since Google doesn't in fact host the images (or text) it links to, it merely finds them on someone else's space. So any image you find on Google and link to is actually residing on someone's bandwidth, and it certainly isn't Google's bandwidth we're talking about. Usually there will be a link that shows the page that the image comes from.
