View Full Version : Find your best location in Middle-earth...

That's right! Now you can figure out which location in Middle-earth is the best for you!
Just use our Middle-earth Location Finder (http://www.barrowdowns.com/location.asp).
Well, I'm packing my bags and moving to Rivendell (hehehe, watch out Glorfindel, here comes the scarlet woman herself smilies/biggrin.gif ).
Who made this location finder? Was it you, B-W? Regardless, here's a big kiss, because this is the neatest addition ever! It's the best one I've seen on any site.

I got Rivendell! Glad to be where the party's at! But what's a Nazgul doing at Rivendell? I think you'll have to go in disguise so Elrond and Glorfindel won't open up a can on you!
By the way, I tried several different combinations, and I couldn't get Mordor to come up. Is it one of the choices?

To answer Lush's question, "Yes, I made the location finder. I wanted to make something different that I hadn't seen on other sites. I'm glad you like it."
Mordor is not a choice, but Barad-dur, Minas Morgul and Mt. Doom are.

I did it again.....and I got the exact same locations. And I know for a fact that I entered in slightly different answers...hehe.
It seems to be fairly accurate BW. I would love to live in Rivendell...but I'd love live anywhere in ME! smilies/smile.gif
Well, B-W, I tried the test again, just to make sure, and I still got the same answers. Which means, if I ever get bored of Rivendell, I'll take a holiday in Edoras (undoubtedly, Mho & Squatter will be, erm, overjoyed).
I think it's a very accurate test. It's also not nearly as confusing and long as most of the other tests out there, while still providing a satisfying result.

08-16-2002, 09:11 AM
Do you think it gives accurate locations based on the way you answered the questions?
Definitely! A nice warm location ( I like it hot), solitude and a good view so I can keep an eye on everybody else. Mention ONE place that would be better than MT. Doom... smilies/evil.gif smilies/biggrin.gif And from what others have posted so far, it seems the solitude is VERY fitting. Are you sure you don't want to join me? Anyone? smilies/tongue.gif

No need to worry, dearest BW. I haven't seen any other Location Finder out there, but there are all sorts of tests, some better than others. Some LONGER than others. And now I'll go back home to my mountain... smilies/evil.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Yes, I think Lush was referring generally to the myriad of tests out there, not location finders specificly. I haven't seen anything like this, and I take every LotR test I can find. (I'm terrible, I've learned how to slant most of them. smilies/wink.gif )
See you in Ithilien, B-W! smilies/biggrin.gif Warmer climes appeal to you too, eh?
Are there other location finders on others sites?
Yes, but yours is the first one I've seen that doesn't suck. I've actually encountered about 3 Tolkien-related location finders. NONE of them were any good. Confusing, long, and generally weird. Ours is the coolest.

Maik, this is unrelated but I like your quote. Who said that?
Mr. U: "Ithilien as a backup seems a wee bit dangerous for my tastes."
Tsk. Tsk. Gentrification, gentrification. Ithilien is the up-and-coming neighborhood. Sure, everything's a fixer-upper and the neighbors can be a bit dodgy.. there's the occasional orc and Shelob's not accounted for.. but that's what gives The Ith (as insiders know it) its artsy edge. And places can be had for a song, at a fraction of the price of say one of Kate's mansions in Edoras, to say nothing of overpriced downtown Minas Tirith.

You know the test can also be worked in reverse. If you pick the answers that don't fit your personality you can figure out which places in Middle Earth you should avoid.

Nice pitch, Maril -- you should be a Middle-earth realtor! You almost had me until I found out that it's impossible to get insurance that would cover the odd Mūmakil stampede. It would be just my luck to get a fixer-upper into decent shape only to have it crushed flat by iron-shod oliphaunts. Freeloading off of Elrond is looking better and better.
BTW, there's no need to get overly paranoid about occasional off-topic banter, comments, and questions. I think it's the threads that start off or veer off into swamps of complete and irretrievable off-topic-ness that we'd like to curtail.
P.S. - Rose, appreciate it if you'd take a few moments to chop that sig down to three lines or less. Thanks.

WARNING!
A heads up for folks looking for property - there's a shady character or two out there selling lots in Numenor, Gondolin and Doriath.
The post-Ring War expansion has created a ripe market for some of these schemes.
I realize it's a long haul to see some of these places, but please, please, please, at least check a map before purchasing! None of these realms will show up on the BW's locator, and that's a good clue.
I have a very upset Dunlander family on my hands who showed up on Hobbiton expecting to find Gondolin. Hobbit law does have recourse for such shams, but it only applies to Hobbits born within the Shire. (If you're a Brandybuck, take note.)
In most places the rule is CAVEAT EMPTOR, let the buyer beware, but here's a review of local laws.
Rohan:
You have rights to persue restitution under the law of Rohan if you "be of just character and goodly mien.."
Mostly it means you can behead anyone who cheats you, and the court of Rohan will figure out later if they like and agree with your complaint - a quick process. Since the person most likely to complain is already dead, it works out. A good system, though not likely to get your money back.
Gondor:
Has a byzantine and complex legal system applying to "all acts committed within the current and former boundaries of the realm(s) of Numenor; by citizens and visitors of such realm(s); and all descendants of the high race of men, born within and without the current and former realm(s) of Numenor.." Whew!
This pretty much means everyone and everywhere, given the reach of old Numenor (the men of Far Harad for example are still considered citizens of Numenor). I think it also applies to fish swimming above the former island of Numenor. So long as you're not a dwarf, hobbit or full-elf (the half-elven are covered under this law), even if you commit your crime in another country - evem if it was never part of the realms of Numenor at any time - you can appeal to Gondorian law. If your crime was committed in a former Gondorian territory, you are covered no matter what your race. This broad policy was enacted largely due to problems inherent in Elvish law (see below).
Sounds good, eh?
I don't recommend it. Not unless you have a lot of time, deep pockets, and a deep grudge.
This open policy has lead to a staggering backlog of cases. Graft has been reduced under King Elessar but still exists. I'm not sure that cracking down on the bribes was such a good idea, as this used to be the only way you could get a hearing in any decent amount of time. But whatever.
In the thousands of years of Gondor's existence, each king and steward passed a new set of laws, often with little regard to contradictions with previous laws. But due to Gondor's respect for tradition, these newer laws do not over-ride past law. In fact, the tendency is to respect older more out-of-date laws over the more recent (though this depends on the judge). This is a real problem when it comes to laws enacted by that wacko Ar-Pharazon, as any any animal rights activist in Gondor can tell you. The result of all this: there is law both for and against everything, and it takes a very good ($$$$$) lawyer to locate the laws and interpretation of such laws to suit your needs.
Fortunately, this only applies to civil law, and capital cases such as murder and treason are overseen personally by the King. Or Gondor would be a complete disaster.
By the way, for this reason do not apply Rohan-style criminal justice for civil offenses in Gondor. Your civil case will take forever, while their criminal case will be processed immediately. It brings little satisfaction to finally get your money back once you're exiled or in prison.
Shire law (though this culturally applies to any Hobbit population):
Most disputes in the Shire are solved "as between friends" or, if they are serious, in a meeting between the heads of each family.
Solicitors (as lawyers are called there, everything's different in the Shire) therefore have little to do outside of executing wills, marriage agreements and adoptions.
This has the unfortunate effect of your civil complaint being of great interest to any Hobbit Solicitor. They will draw out your case to its utmost length and complexity, including multiple hearings and personal meetings with the major, even if they are fully aware it is hopeless. This happened to my Dunland family. I wish they had come to me first.
Elvish law:
Elvish law is uniform for the High Elves from one Elvish country to another, and only slightly different in Mirkwood, subject to the vagaries of the current king. They have had plenty of time iron things out. Each case receives a personal, attentive and careful hearing by the head of that realm, Elrond or Galadriel as the case may be. It takes time, but given the wisdom of these ancient beings, the outcome is almost inevitably fair and well-considered. The problem is if you happen to be mortal. Elves are immortal, and time means nothing to them. Your hearing is likely to be 100-200 years in the future. (This is actually very wise, as the elves say most disputes given time will resolve themselves. In the case of mortals this is very true!) If you appeal, explaining you are mortal, it will be moved up to 20-30 years. They feel this is perfectly reasonable and will honestly not understand your impatience. While they will politely say they will consider moving it up sooner, there is no chance they will.
Dwarvish law:
Nobody really knows. There was some legal understanding between the dwarves of Moria and the Elves of that region, and currently between the men of Dale and the King under the Mountain. But there is little historical record of the 'Great Khazadum Accord,' and the agreement with Dale boils down to: "..if the crime is committed on dwarvish territory, we will handle it. Thank you."
Dwarvish law, for those who've run afoul of it, appears to be arbitrary. Dwarves hint that their system was set down by Durin however, and is unchanged from that day.
Reports are that dwarves have little respect for any fool who has been financially cheated, (their attitude - the careless and stupid get what they deserve), and rule accordingly.
Interesting note: connections with dwarves of high-standing have proven to be actually detrimental to ones case, as wealthy dwarves do not wish their reputations to be tarnished by their friends' stupidity.
Mordor:
While technically bound by the law of Gondor, this is a frontier town. The reality is the law of the sword. Bring a weapon to back up your point, buy nothing that you can't verify... and don't drink the water!
Good luck, and happy house hunting!

Well, I must say, I'm happy to live Mordor, since our laws... erh... WHAT laws??? Well, we just deal with such "things" in our own way. Why do you think my mountain burns so bright? smilies/evil.gif Hey, what do you mean "don't drink the water"? Water's *hic* just fine.
Definitely not going to Elven country now... I'm really not that patient.

Hey, Maik, I just saw this notice in Gondor:
"Frontier Settlement Program: By Royal Decree of King Elessar, the Elfstone, the... "
- okay, I won't bore you with that part. -
"... to return to Middle Earth and to Gondor what is rightfully hers, and to forever scatter the forces of evil from the boundaries of our fair realm, that we may never again be pressed by... "
- hang on, I'll get to the good stuff. -
"... henceforth and until... "
- blah, blah, hold on, Aragorn's getting wordy. -
"... property held for the term of one year within the former land of Mordor (excepting the Tower of Minas Ithil and those roads and passes needed for the movement of goods within the realm) shall belong to the holder and his/her heirs from then henceforth, until the realm shall end."
So much for my Mordor real estate biz. Ah, it was a hard sell anyways. You Naz must be pretty tough, or your 'water' is coming from a still.

You know, I wouldn't have bought any land cause:
Rivendell
It is the location that meets most of your preferences.
You would also probably like to live in
Edoras
Bree
Second time:
Rivendell
It is the location that meets most of your preferences.
You would also probably like to live in
Bree
Lothlorien
Places to avoid:Moria, Minas Morgul, Barad-dūr
Sorry bout that Marileangorifurnimaluim.

Woo! I got Lothlorien. I would also like Rivendell and Hobbiton or Rivendell and Isengard (depending on one answer that I wasn't completely sure about).
Basically what I get on every other Personality Quiz on this that I've taken...
BW, this is pretty sweet, i like it. Just as good as the personality test....
Watch out beach here comes Eol! Gray havens and follow up is Bree and Long Lake. smilies/biggrin.gif

I probably enjoy Edoras (my primary selection), and I'd love Rivendell, being the big bookworm that I am. But I would be absolutely bored out of my skull in Bree, and Barliman would start to get on my nerves around... oh, Day 3.
So 2 out of 3 on the Finder. Thinking for myself, I'd probably say Minas Tirith or Rivendell.

And just where is the Old Forest on this, Mr. Barrow-Wight? *taps foot quietly while raising an eyebrow*
Or have you assumed that old Tom has made it a gated community for him and Goldberry? smilies/wink.gif

Sweet, I got the Dead Marshes as my primary one, and Minas Morgul and Dol Guldur as the others. Gee, I'm awful!!!

Looks like I'll be battlin' Balrogs in Moria.(by myself so far) Second options were the Lonely Mt. and Ithilien. Guess I'm a Dwarf at heart. smilies/cool.gif

I see a lot of people who get the perfect location for their nick or persona, but I wonder how many people are honestly answering the questions based upon the true manner in which they would react to the questions/situations....
.... Though I get a different answer depending on my mood when I take the tests, I just took it and got:
Barliman Butterbur
... and my location would be:
Edoras
This changes almost every time I take the test, but usually the same 3-5 answers come up, just in different order.
Let's see some honest answers to the location and personality tests. (not saying that all of the answers people have posted weren't honest, It's just plain that many people answer to fit the result they desire).

Having gone back and retaken the Location Finder test a couple more times, my favorite location is now Bree followed by Long Lake and Rivendell.
Not much of a change from Long Lake followed by Bree and Rivendell.
Actually, I think I'm happier now that I test out as a Breelander rather than a Lakeman, and can only wonder what I'm answering differently now.
In any case, I am still not coming up with the Shire, which is a bit disappointing.

If I'd been manipulating the tests, trust me, I'd have come up with Barad-dur as my primary "target" a long time ago. But I still can't get it....
And come on BW, do you honestly believe that I'd go for Wormtongue for fun? Nah, I don't think so.
Seems that my honest self is quite a horrible personality. Well, at least one of them... smilies/wink.gif smilies/tongue.gif

*Sigh* When I give honest answers to the personality test, I end up with Aragorn. I suppose someone who started the 'Lessons on Swordfighting' wouldn't get hobbits, would they?
BW, your test is truly difficult to manipulate. I've tried.
It's the weather that makes the difference between Rivendell and Ithilien for me.

Barrow-Wight: Lothlorien was the honest one I got after I lied to get Mirkwood. LOL...I generally do the lying one to get what I want, then I do the truthful one, and that's what I tell people...
I know, I'm weird, but it's my system, and it's worked for me smilies/tongue.gif . LOL
EDIT: Okay: just so you trust me, I did it again. Some of the answers changed because of the day I'm having, but, I came out with:
Based on your answers, you should settle in
Rivendell
It is the location that meets most of your preferences.
You would also probably like to live in
Hobbiton
Lothlorien
Just a different configuration of the same answers!
