View Full Version : A idea about the "fangirl" Problem we've been having

Kithrèna Greenarrow Legolas

I have been thinking recently about the Quote-Unquote "Fangirl" Problem we've been having. Mods have been having a time trying to keep things sorted out (Anyone remember that "Why do YOU like Legolas" Thread?) and some members are growing irritated with them.
I THINK I have found a salutation. I speak as one of the Legolas-lusters that you'll never clear us out and if you try to suppress us, you'll loose popularity quickly.
Now, anyone knows that if steam builds up, its bound to let itself out somewhere and I've been thinking that perhaps we should make a fourm for these girls (Myself included) to let their steam out in....Yes, thats right, a "Swooning" Fourm.
I personally belong to another fourm where they have a swooning fourm and thats where all the "ORLI TAKE ME NOW!!" and "ELIJAH I LOVE YOU!!!" posts go to, instead of all the other fourms, cluttering the entire site up. And members who dont like the swooning aspect have a choice of going or not going, instead of facing it in fourms they DO go into.
I apologize if a thread like this has been posted before, but I just had to voice My opinion.
Now, if you DO consider this but can find no one to MOD it, I'd be happy to, although I BEG you to look into all other possibilities before choosing Me. I once MODed a Swoon fourm and I dont think I was worth My salt there. But if no one else will take the part, I will, and thats IF you decide to go ahead with this idea.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please know that I would not have posted it if I didnt think it would be of help to all you MODs.

Salutations! The only problem with that is to be fair we would have to make a 'fanboy' ('fanman'?) forum as well, to praise Liv Tyler's lips, her legs, her... uh well, moving right along. You get the idea. Whenever I need to let off steam I go into chat and hit on bawdy Rimbaud. smilies/wink.gif

Welcome to the downs Kithrena! Glad to have you. While there has been an invasion of young ladies who are fans of the actors as of late the problem is not new. "Fangirls" as you put it started coming roughly about 10 months ago. We've managed to keep a fair amount of order and popularity since then and I am confident we will continue to do so.

The downs is a place for Tolkien discussion. Many many "fangirls" have come and gone since the movie. We have sort of a trickle down effect. Many many "fangirls" leave while a few stick around for serious discussion. While the movie is discussed here swooning really doesn't contribute much to those who want to discuss the books on a different level.

By creating a "swoon" forum we would change the atmosphere of this board. Yes, more of the "fangirls" would stick around but I don't think that's the kind of popularity the Administrators of this site seek. It would be counter productive.

Note: I am not an admistrator or mod of this site. Nor do I represent them in any way. All the contents of this post are personal opinion based on my experiences on this forum/site.

P.s. I believe Maril is a Ma'am

Elenna

Isn't Maril a lady?

Anyway, Kithrena, the problem with creating a "swoon" forum would be this: it would seem like the admins are SUPPORTING that kind of frivolous discussion. While they (and we smilies/rolleyes.gif ) put up with it, it really isn't what this forum was created for.

Plus, fangirls come and fangirls go. A few stick around, but for most, a couple of posts and they vanish. Probably not worth it to make a forum if they're going to leave anyway, eh?

Bawdy!?!?!?

I am a polite and mannered member of this society, never wont to express my opinion in anything less than the most subtle verbal couchings. You, ma'am, are heading the right way for some punishment.

Out of interest, this propounded Vomitarium of an extra Forum...we'd be allowed to swoon about members here as well as characters/actors, right?

Indeed I am most definately a ma'am, though not always a lady. smilies/wink.gif And I thought that would get a rise out of you, Rim-boy. I'm a sassy miss. How could I resist? Or cease and desist?

No, Squatter, we already have a thread dedicated to commenting on eachother. And you look quite dapper in that hat, by-the-bye.

My dear, I always assume that Legolusting and Frodopalsy are temporary conditions, and most of the fangirls will stay for the fine intellectual discourse.

But if we do start a "swoon" forum, might I request the inclusion of Slash fiction? smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/evil.gif

Kithrena: first of all: welcome! I hope you find this site to be all you hoped it to be! Happy death!

Secondly: I'm sure there are many boards for the specific actors/characters out there. I know that the characters actually do have their own sites, because I stumbled upon a few of them, and the actors certainly do. Wouldn't that be a better place post on for that topic?

And, I did once happen upon a Forum that had a "Drool Room" of sorts, and it was kind of...erm...bad. I mean, I think it destroys the entire point of this board, personally. I mean: you can look for the site if you want (before posting this, I took about 15 minutes trying to find it again, but failed).

Also: about the Slash, while I don't personally find it either offensive or amusing, many people find it the first, so: I highly doubt that they would have Slash Fanfiction on this site anywhere. Also: you do not know how young some of the people here might be.

And, the moderators moderate so much already and the rooms are getting so crowded that I do not think the site could really deal with that kind of mass drooling at once. I mean: they already started closing topics and they deleted many Freestyle RPG's to make room, I believe. And, it would be hard to moderate the room in general because of the kind of people the room would attract.

Also: Kithrena: while you seem willing to "share" your love for Orlando Bloom, there are many, many people who are not. I once, when asked what I thought of Orlando Bloom in the movie, replied "I thought he made a really good Legolas!" and was met with "Uh-uh! Hands off! He's mine girlie!" Yes: I know: delusional, obsessive, pathetic were all words that popped into my mind too...but: they would probably happen upon the site too, and then they would probably contribute to the other topics and...well...okay: I'll stop complaining about what would happen now...gee: and when I first read that, I thought "hmmm: that might be a good idea...". I have to stop thinking so much... smilies/cool.gif smilies/tongue.gif smilies/wink.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif

Ick - the very thought of a "Swoon Room" makes me want to use some very unladylike language.

And Maril, I thought "lady" a better noun than "chick". I too am a Miss, but 9 times out of 10 not a lady in the mannerly sense of the word.

I have friends who do the Orlie swooning thing, and they apparently find it very hard to keep their conversations G-rated, or even PG rated. Ewww! A whole forum of people talking about THAT???? Orlando Bloom would never come out of his house again!

You are 100% correct, Elenna! All the ones that I have known could not do that either.

Well, not sure Orlando Bloom would ever know, being that he is apparently some sort of technophobe. I feel his pain. This whole "Internet" thing scares me to death...I am surprised I get this far.

And "unladylike" words did come to my mind too, Elenna, and I, too, had to restrict my post greatly from what I felt like saying about the concept of "Slash Fanfiction". Buuut, we are supposed to be nice on here, so, while I said that I do not like it and I do not hate it, I had many words about what I thought of the general idea of a board for slash fanfiction.

Hmm, I shall be careful what I say as I have already been driven into the RPGs by those who have taken offence at my observations before and no offence is intended.
I believe Orli is popular with the young girls because he seems so fresh, innocent and non-threatening, plus noble etc. but this is just a character he plays. Even his eyes are contact lens blue. (check Viggo's portrait of him putting them in) All of these things are of course irrelevant to this site, except perhaps on the movies thread. This is a Tolkien site, not 'Blooming Marvellous' or some other location. Drool or swoon there please, not here. I don't blame the girls. I still have my Brandon Lee poster at the top of the stairs even at my age but I wouldn't dream of cluttering up a 'serious' website with such stuff which is of course what I'm doing now so I'd better stop.

Hmmm...he's a technophobe? Gee...the darn personality quizzes are right pairing me with him, then. Poo...I have to be honest: these things scare me to death. I mean, you press one button and, tah-daaaah, the entire world sees what you think. How do these things work anyway? I mean, how is it that all of these little wires with all this electricity produces a black screen that is quickly making me blind over time and also knows what I am typing? *Shivers* Gah...I am suddenly thinking my computer is very, very scary. I think I am going to finish this post and leave.

Why did computers have to freak me out? Gah! Why couldn't I have...an ex-wife and a 14-year old son, for instance (okay, I am 15 and a girl already, but...still)? And here I am stuck with my friends, after me taking the quizzes saying, "Awww...you and Mr. Bloom would make such a cute couple!"

Yes, as an ex-second-hand smoker, I know how horrible smoking is to the people around you. My dad smoked in front of me for the first 12 years of my life. I think he really ruined my lungs (he smoked in every room with the windows closed quite a bit). That may be, Squat. I'm sure the Mods all have a kind of scruffy appeal. However; I'm surprised that no one has commented on the fact that the number of posters to the Downs started to increase after I joined in December, 2001.

My fan base does tend to doggedly follow me. Though most do respect my privacy and are content to adore me from afar. That would explain the lack of a "Birdie Swoon Room" here. Wouldn't want to take the focus off our minor English author too much.

Now if you'll excuse me: I have to send the beaters out to drive away the stalkers in the hedgerow.

I am so frightfully disappointed. And I thought they wanted to be known for their minds.

It's a sad fact that this seldom carries any weight with the wretched wights that stalk these barrows, Bethberry m'dear. ;)

In any case, such considerations are as nothing to me. I am motivated solely by the innocent desire to foment chaos and disorder; and to inflict a certain light-hearted revenge on any mounted pseudonyms who may have seen fit to add to my discomfort in the past. :smokin:

However, since Maril has innocently diverted my somewhat ill-aimed barb towards the Miasmic One, it looks as though another great plan has been foiled. I shall concoct another, never fear.

Sorry to steal your thunder, Birdie. We all know that you're the real Downs pin-up; but you can't carry the huge burden of our admiration alone. The PMs alone would drive you mad.

I think a Mithadan swoon room would be a funny thing to see - we could all reminisce about the wonderfully polite things he's said to us in the past...

But if anyone deserves a swoon room, how about the Barrow Wight?

My suggestion covers every administrator, moderator and passing maniac who helps to run the site. Especially BW. Surely his recently-released picture must have set some ladies' hearts a-beating. ;)

Mithadan
10-18-2002, 07:28 AM
*The administrator's ears were burning. He entered the thread and stalked to its end preparing to issue a venomous screech: "OFF TOPIC!"

*Then he reviews several posts. Upon reading the post of the long-named one, he blushes bright green to the roots of his hair. Three times he attempts to formulate a response, pithy, polite or otherwise, and fails utterly. Glancing over his shoulders for stalkers, he slinks from the thread muttering under his breath...

Surely his recently-released picture must have set some ladies' hearts a-beating.

But here's the rub, Squatter(another truth to be universally acknowledged). Look how quickly these quaintly-minded sorts dropped Rimbaud once he acknowledged the existence of Mrs. Rimbaud. There is clearly a "one ring" being sported in the BW's picture. He is thus askanced and all his mighty charms seemingly underappreciated. (Certainly the chat facility was undervalued recently.) smilies/wink.gif

And turning, I would hope, to the rescue of all gracious goodly gentlemen, especially one whose ears have just been burned, I look over at the wise OneWhiteTree. Methinks KKate has the better plan. I shall take a page--actually, several pages--from her good Book of Nice Men. Besides, it sounds vaguely Chaucerian.

Stunned I am, am I not?

What are you talking about, ppl? If KGL haven't started this supposedly "swooning" thread (I confess never looked inside before due to it's name, but still...), you would have no chance of showing off the way you have been doing here smilies/tongue.gif.

Someone complains about having serious posts ending up in drooling/swooning (whatever) storm. Here is a paragon of opposite, though topic get off completely and became a word playing/punning/joking contest so stunning I am not able to leave without even most confused comment

You even managed to paint Mithadan green (operation which, as is widely known, Valar themselves were unable to perform over Sauron) who henceforward would go by the name of Gwenadan (if effect is permanent , of course)

The general point - if "drooling" forum is capable of producing such an inspiration, I'm voting with both hands for it. Only pray keep inspiration closer to Tolkien, eh?

as a PS: we males are not acting like that all the time (along NN10 lines, if you pls). Sometimes we sleep, and sometimes (3 times a day for your humble servant) we eat. The rest of the time is as was descibed above)

Swoon Room # 2, salons A, B, and C are currently booked for a long-term engagement by the Barrow Downs Birding Club. Some of the events you might wish to attend this evening, 28 Winterfilth, are the following:

Stalking the Elusive Mellow-throated Birdland
Top Hot Spots for Sighting Birdie
Birdie Up Close: Binoculars or Scopes?
Building a Better Blind: Privacy or Peek-a-boo
Identifying Birdie's Songs: To-wit, To-Wit

Our sister Inn at Bree is also full, with reservations tonight for an appearance by some hobbits, followed by a wizard and a pony.

The following week, the Barrow Downs Birding Club will be hosting a tribute to Birdland sightings, tentatively titled, "Perched atop the Lonely Star." Tickets on sale next Tuesday. Proceeds to the Barrow Downs Store.

The Underground Treasury of Leprechauns (Ltd) is reported to announce it is cutting short it's sponsorship program for celebrities-to-be. As a press-attaché of the Treasury told our correspondent, since all potters went to Hogwarts, leprechauns supply of pots for their gold was cut short. Though, as selfsame press-attaché announces, Treasury is seriously considering a project of issuing it's own credit cards. There is a plan to establish the original network of ATM throughout the world. ATM will be installed by Golems Inc, and made out of finest china porcelain golems. The ATM are reported to have passed tests successfully, though the cash advance process is rather peculiar - customer is supposed to stick the card into golems mouth, than make a tour around it and wait for his cash on the other side. Leprechaun Treasury (Ltd) and Golems Inc announce that their cooperation will not end with this single project, and we are to meet new products in nearest future.

Here's my story - my little sister (age 12) was looking for Elijah Wood pictures on the Internet. She is the epitome of fangirliness. Anyway, this site came up on the Google engine. She checked it out, and started making noises of disgust that there weren't any movie pictures. But I thought the name generator was really cool, so I checked it out.

And here I am today. I was already something of a Tolkien fan, but it's possible for a fangirl to become a thoughtful discusser. I think. Even though my sister (the Philistine) thinks the books are stupid.

Other things have been known to sink on contact with ice, however. No, Birdie; it was that moustache that prompted me to use Sir Cosmo as my avatar, not his unfortunate Atlantic experiences. I should like to say, though, that he was one of the survivors.

Personally I think that our problem is more likely to be the looming mass of The Two Towers, which some sharp-eyed lookouts are even now announcing to the Officer of the Watch.

[EDIT: The avatar reference is to an old black-and-white photograph of Sir Cosmo Edmund Duff-Gordon, fifth baronet (http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/item/1059/), which used to be on Encyclopaedia Titanica. I'd had no avatar before that, hence the interest.]

Squatter are you saying that FOTR was nothing but the "Titanic Overture" for TTT?

I fear that the last film was a mere New York incident in comparison with what is to come, yes.

*Threatening music starts to play...*

Well, I'm actually not sure that TTT will cause a huge population explosion. After all, most of the audience will be made up of those who have already seen FOTR. I doubt the increase will be as much as the FOTR one (of which I must admit, I was a part.)

And ROTK will be the Mont Blanc incident (the December 6 1917 explosion in Halifax harbour) Squatter? One could refer to the movies' self-destructive urges, couldn't one?

I am not a fan girl, but Orlando, for your information does not smoke.
Most of the fan girls will be gone soon, many of the ones I see have not been back here very much.
and on another note, this is a really crazy thread, I didn't even know what you were all really talking about half the time, I guess I still am kind of new and it seems that most of the people who have posted here have been at the BD for a long time, maybe in awhile I can hopefully take part in a discussion like this. smilies/cool.gif

I really don't think this site has a big a fangirl problem as other forums.

Just as a note: the fangirl issues seem to rise with the coming of each new movie. It will die down almost to complete death until Return of the King comes out, then they will all return, crying their little eyes out about the fact that their Sam is married off and that they can't marry Frodo.

Okay: I will be crying too, but not about those things. I'll just be crying like I've cried for the first two movies...

But then, the movies will be over and the teenies will disappear again, and we'll be left to our peace and quiet. *Sigh* Thank goodness for that...

Besides, wouldn't you need step-ladders near the screen to get the top done?

Can fangirls jump that high?

Or perhaps the lust generated by seeing Legolas on the screen gives them the muscular boost needed to propel themselves up to the top and lick the screen.

Hey not all the people who have come to this forum because of the films are fangirls. I am defently not a fangirl, but I would have never known about Tolkien this much if I had not seen FOTR. Though you just don't like the people who have not done as much reasearch as me, and the people who have not read the books.

Couldn't we just start a thread for fangirls? It would be better. Then they could stop annoying others, though it would be the worst thread ever. (In my opinion.)

Our point is that it encourages them if we cater to them. Scaring them away is much easier (and more fun). Don't worry, I'm kidding...a bit...
