Raefindel,
Which of the 2004 calendars did you buy? I've seen a number of them on e-bay. What does the front cover look like, or who is the illustrator?
I have the one illustrated by Ted Nasmith.
********************************************
Samwise,
Hi! I rarely bump into you since I spend so much time down in the Shire.
I am still collecting but more slowly than I did a year ago. The thing I've been buying longest is books-- I go all the way back to the psychedelic Ballantines. Also, posters and maps. But, since the movies came out, I've expanded into other areas: especially Rawcliffe figures, calendars, and postcards.
For a very long time, I've wanted to get the first edition hardcovers of the LotR that were put out in the U.S. by Houghton Mifflin. When I was in college, my roomate had them and I really envied her that. They were only five bucks each, but I was scambling to keep body and soul together and paperbacks were the best I could manage.
This summer I lurked on e-bay. Boy, did I lurk, coming back day after day! Most of them were way too rich for my blood. But one-by-one I finally managed to get them by barain hunting. A professional collector would probably turn up his nose, since they are later printings of the first edition. They are sturdy but definitely look used. One has a "real" dustjacket and two have facsimile ones that look like the original did when it was new.
Anyways I'm very pleased with them. I've got them displayed on the top shelf of my bookcase in our dining room.
For the next few months, I'll stay away from older books on e-bay. With the interest in RotK growing (plus the holidays), the prices start soaring again. I find a good time to buy is in the summer when folk's minds are on vacations and such.

Hobbit costumes
My daughter decided she wanted to be a hobbit for the fall carnival at her school where they go in costume. (Honest, this wasn't my idea!) So I got to bid on a pair of big hobbit feet! They even fit me.
The hard thing is that there are tons of hobbit lad costumes out there but no one does them for the girls. I know you folk are
all talented and can sew such things, but not me! I scavanged the web forever and finally found a medieval peasant costume that would fit a girl complete with a little laced bodice. It should arrive next week.

Sharon,
You can get some pretty good hobbit-clothes at "Elf-Mart". I used to sew, once, a long time ago. (Who's got the time?)
I've been collecting music. Soundtracks I and II, of course; Dawn, Evening, and Night in Rivendell, all by the Tolkien Ensemble; Starlit Jewel by Broceliande; and even an LP from the Rankin-Bass cartoon Hobbit (okay, okay, but I LIKE the Rankin-Bass songs, I really do.) I downloaded Donald Swann off the internet. And I even found Bo Hansson, although I hardly ever listen to it. In general I prefer songs (THE songs) to interpretive orchestration.
I'm still on the lookout for the "clean copy" of just the songs from the BBC production of LOTR. It only comes in the Big New Set, and I've already got a regular copy of the entire BBC narration, so I've got no excuse to buy another entire set... (anyone have a BBC-LOTR-song-CD that you wanna sell? PM me...)
I also cherish the ambition of getting the whole Ron Inglis narration, since he sings the songs, and I hear he does a very hobbitty job of it.
After extensive searching I also relocated my lost handwritten list of Celtic Tunes to use with Tolkien's Songs. Phew! It's a short list, but the tunes really do work well. (Least I think so.)
Alatariel:
"It's impossible to have Frodo without Sam, or Sam without Frodo. They're like two halves of one heart.."

Hi Sharon!
I got a really tiny version of the movie pic callendar and a date-book with Aragorn, Arwen and Eowen on the cover, also a movie pic callendar. But then I saw a really cool one that had a drawing of a hobbit that resembled the Da Vinci sketch that looks like this;
http://www.mindgraphic.ch/bilder/da-vinci-leonardo.jpg
but the guy was a hobbit! It was so cool! looked just like something Helen would have wanted!
Hmmm... hobbit costumes for girls... In my cloak pic I was wearing a hobbit costume (underneath) but it was pants, not a bodice & skirt. I don't sew that well... bodices require gromets and bones...NOT THIS LITTLE ELF!

He really does a good job, very hobbity!! Great characterization on the voices, too.
I also got the engagement calendar with Aragorn and the two chicks on the cover. I want the 365 daily calendar as well. And...I just got confirmation of my order for the limited edition of Andúril that will be available from United Cutlery in November!! I am sooo excited. I think I saw the 2004 one at Target and Barnes and Noble. I love mine too, I have saved every single picture from mine. Don't know what I am going to do with them, but I have them.
Has everyone heard that they are going to be coming out with a LOTR Pinball machine. Here is the news report: Pinball News (http://www.pinballnews.com/games/lotr/index.html)
I am huge fan of pinball, and have always wanted to own a machine (I am absolutely terrible at video games, but I have always been pretty good at pinball). And additionally I have always thought that a LOTR pinball would be a really great idea. Though brand new pinballs cost about 4000 dollers, so I am defintely not going to get one now (or later, but maybe, hopefully far in the future when they get used and then go back on the market)
Oh, and Helen and Rae! Long time, no see! Glad you are all back, post well smilies/biggrin.gif

Boy, this thread grows fast! Elf Mart...hmm. There's one of those within 6 blocks. Thanks Helen. Let me see what comes in the mail and I'll see if it looks alright or I have to do more scrounging.
Well, when my daughter gets tired of her clumpy hobbit feet, she can always loan them to her mother!
The hobbit calendar looks neat. I have a different 2004 calendar, but I am on the lookout for others as well. And I do have a hobbit calendar for 2003 with similar illustrations from Lidia Postima who illustrated Day's book. But I don't have the particular picture that was posted...
True confessions: I've been in a buying mood for the last week and went a little beserk. Today I received my poster of Hobbiton and Bywater -- the one that Tolkien did that was part of the Bodleian exhibit, I think. Now, I am tucking it away for the holidays so as not to get too greedy.
Gorwingel - $4000 for pinball. My husband loves pinball, but I don't think he would agree to something quite that pricey!

All right! We are doing our part for the economy! smilies/rolleyes.gif smilies/wink.gif Actually, the page a day isn't 365 fresh pix, because the weekend is two days for one pix. I throw all the ugly orc pictures away! smilies/tongue.gif My favorite is the picture of Elendil with the hunky young warriors all around. smilies/smile.gif You could probably decoupage something (a wooden or glass desk top, file cabinet, mirror frame, clipboard...) nicely with your fav pix. I had a PADay victorian calendar once. I found clear glass rectangular paperweights and put a pix on the bottom, cardboard, then felt. I trimed the edges with golden cord and they made gorgeous paperweights. The glass sort of magnifies the picture. I sold quite a few at craft shows. There are some really nice shots of Gandalf and Aragorn I wouldn't mind turning into a paperweights. Can't wait to see all the new pix on a 2004 PAD calender! I'll be checking those stores you mentioned this week! smilies/smile.gif

Liriodendron, I throw away the orc pics too! I've used several of the pics I've saved as stationary... sent one to Samwise and a few to Helen. I got mine (this years) at elf-mart (that would be K-mart not Walmart).
Confessions of a wannabe elf; I probably would not need the hobbit feet.. I ummm... well, that is OCCASIONALLY, ya know, not regularlly... shave my toes. smilies/rolleyes.gif
But those feet sound like a really nice idea for someone who wants to be a hobbit.

Today's picture is very nice! Gandalf the Grey, standing in the circular beamed hallway of Bag End...looking very tall! I always pictured orcs as ugly....but never as hideous as portrayed in the movies! On a ugly orc day, I just paperclip something beautiful over it. I did like the balrog though. Did you notice the two from Shelob's lair, at least that's what I imagine. Several "new" orcs handling a large cocoonish type oval egg thing. smilies/frown.gif Monday's (27 Oct) will be nice for all the Legolas lovers! smilies/biggrin.gif

On the orc days I will either refuse to turn the page (keep the old one an extra day) or tear the orc off and turn the page a day early. My husband noticed I had missed it a few days and he tore off 3 pages and CRUMPLED THEM IN HIS HAND AND THREW THEM IN THE TRASH! He got a sound scolding that day I can tell you! I like the idea of the decoupage cups. How very creative of you!

All right---I'm GOING to get a Sting wether anyone likes it or not!!!!
I discovered a program called RocketCash via Nestle candy bars, and decided to play for the heck of it. The cook where I work bought a couple of boxes of Butterfingers and Baby Ruths for the staff to snack on....there are codes inside the wrappers, and you go to the particular Nestle site, type in the code, and get so much "Rocket (virtual) Cash."
Today I went to redeem one of my codes, and for the heck of it decided to "Shop" to see what kind of stuff I could get. Browsing around, I foundTHIS !!!!!! (http://proxy.rocketcash.com/moc/tramlaw/www/mid=291:tid=A/^/popup.gsp) Yeah, I know, it's just on-line "Elfmart", but all I have to do is eat candy bars to get it! (LOL--too bad for my waistline...)
I actually got bold this evening and asked my parents for a 2004 Lord of the Rings Calendar for my upcoming (MY HOBBIT SELF WILL BE OF AGE!) birthday. Yeah, I know, it shouldn't be so hard, and I could ask for the Sting, too....but my parents/family don't GET LOTR, and I can just hear it:
"Why do you want THAT?" smilies/rolleyes.gif
Ah, well. I have a friend who knows my likes, so who knows, I may not have to eat so many candy bars...... smilies/wink.gif

Not to worry, Helen. My swords are only used on orcs (or dorcs as we call them at work). I did have to take Sting to the Misty Mountains a few weeks ago, to protect our group from the orcs that infest those mountains.

These events are sadly not as good as you would think. I went to Comic-Con in San Diego and even though I had a really great time, I didn't get up to the hobbits in the autograph line (but I did end up getting Sean Astin's but that is a long story). They are fun, but it is very hard to get up to the stars.
Well I attended a RingCon this weekend in Tacoma, Washington. Where I had the pleasure to meet Craig Parker (aka Haldir), and gosh was he a hoot. I didn't get an autograph (I was feeling cheap) but I did get a photo, and additonally I got a Gandalf poster in a trivia contest (even though I didn't win, the other guy I was going against already had the poster). So I had a rather fun time.
My next major LOTR related purchase I am going to make is probably the upcoming ROTK video game. I just saw an ad for it today, and it comes out on the 6th of November, so soon. We have TTT game, and we absolutely love it, so we have to get this one.
I am still thinking about the Pinball machine though, I am going to get that Pinball, someday smilies/frown.gif

On the matter of seamstress' work, I'll cut out the pattern and cloth, but I get my mother to put it all together. She just made a beautifully cloak for me. It looks like a bit of elvish work, what with its silvery grey hood tie that looks like a bit of Lorien rope. Unfortunately, I can't hide in my hood and the cloak is a bit long. Even I, a hobbit that near matches old Bullroarer Took himself, can't avoid tripping on it now and again.
I recently bought a beard, wig, and eyebrow hair for when I perform as Gandalf in my drama club's fall play(The Hobbit). Itchy, but not too itchy. I did scare my cat in a test run.
I've gotten too many action figures to name since my last post, but I'm glad to say that I finally found FotR Moria Sam. Thought I'd NEVER find him!
There was something else too... Oh yes! I FINALLY found an LotR poster. Aragorn, RotK. I must say, a larger than life portrait of the rightful king of Gondor above my headboard is not what I expected, but I am very pleased all the same.
By the way, Raefindel, I like that cloak you pictured above!

Hmmm.... my LotR collection is:
1) The paperback edition of the LotR trilogy (with two copies of RotK, bought just because they had Aragorn on the cover)
2) The red leather-bound collector's edition of LotR
3) The Silmarillion (Second Edition)
4) Unfinished Tales
5) The HoME series
6) The Argonath Poster and the TTT Poster of Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli
7) A life-size cardboard cutout of Aragorn (ordered from tolkientown.com)
8) Dozens of newspaper articles on Middle-earth
9) A very Elvish door-hanging with a design of golden leaves and fruit coming off of golden vines
10) Various gilded wooden baskets and such scattered around my room, giving it a very Finwe/Sun King effect.
11) My collection of charms from the LotR bookmarks
12) My five One Rings (now there's an oxymoron, for you!)
13) My Ring of Barahir (that I also got off of tolkientown.com)
14) My very Elvish cloak made out of black, panne velvet and matching elbow-length gloves

16) Lastly, and most importantly, my memories!!!!!! smilies/biggrin.gif

I do not know (sort of doubt, since my family "dosen't get" LOTR) if I will be recieving anything to add to my collection tomorrow, but I did mention a couple of LOTR-related items that I didn't think would get me too much of the way of odd looks,(:eek smilies/smile.gif so who knows? smilies/wink.gif
{EDIT}
Hm. The date above this post says it's ALREADY the Elventh, though here in CA it's not. smilies/wink.gif So, somewhere, it's ALREADY my birthday.....

Sigh. Nope. Not one little Hobbit-sized thing. Oh, well. I had a very lovely birthday regardless. smilies/wink.gif Guess I'll just have to get LOTR stuff on my own....
Well....I take that back--I recieved this before my birthday, but....
From my favorite Elf, Raefindel the Red-Haired, I recieved a wonderful "birthday card" made from LOTR page-a-day calendar pages and featuring my fave little Hobbit (and on occasion some freinds) smilies/wink.gif. Each page was personally captioned by the dear Elf lady.
So, I can't say I really recieved NOTHING LOTR, just not from my immediate family.

Arwen1858: is that recurve bow something that you shoot, or do you just hang it on your wall...?
My longbow is a "Mirkwood" black with silver-painted design. Nice and light, 30# draw weight and 28# draw length, and a whopping 6' long... I'm new to longbow, and don't have much holding power yet!
Now I need a pair of white long-knives. And a grey/green cloak.
In terms of On-The-Shelf:
In addition to one of the newer boxed sets, I recently added the "No Admittance except on Party Business" bookends. They're next to my Argonath bookends. And I coudn't resist the $2.00 Legolas figurine from Barnes & Noble... looks kinda cute across from my Bag-End keychain...
I'm waiting for the TTT Collector's edition in the mail. And I'm hoping for a complete set of the Inglis CDs.... (hope hope hope)
I rearranged my bookshelves, and Tolkien books now take up six shelves. How's this for addiction? I have... (1, 2, 3, 4...) twenty-two copies of the Trilogy on my shelves plus one that is out on loan to my sister. So that's twenty-three copies all told.... mostly just paperbacks!
And I **STILL** haven't completed my set of HoME.
No wonder my husband thinks I've completely and utterly lost it.

I do shoot my bow! I don't practice as often as I should, but one of the goals I want to work on starting next week is to practice every day. My bow is black on the front and back, and light brown on the sides, the natural color of the wood. It pulls 30#, 28" draw, and 60" long. My daddy shoots a longbow, but for some reason I favor recurves. When I got my bow, it was hardto pull, but after a couple of days, it was no problem. I haven't been practicing, though, so I need to work the muscles up again, and I imagine they'll be pretty sore for the next couple weeks as I start shooting more! I would also love a couple of knives like Legolas'! I have a flipblade I named Sting, which I carry everywhere, so I already have a knife. My parents might not mind too much if I wanted something a little bigger... smilies/biggrin.gif

Samwise: I'm sorry you didn't get the e-card. I'll try to re-send it...better late than never. Unfortunately, Andúril has not arrived yet. I contacted the seller, and it is due to be shipped Thanksgiving week. Maybe in time for RotK...

Helen: I think you have beaten me on the number of copies of the Trilogy. I only have 5 sets. However, one set is the psychedelic cover one from the early 70's, one is the Alan Lee illustrated version and one is a first edition of the red leather-bound collector's edition. I think you'll find those Inglis cd's well worth the wait (and the money)!!! And about those knives...they're supposed to be available in January 2004. Check them out here (http://www.mithrilarmoury.com/legolas's_knives.htm). Legolas' knives and Aragorn's dagger will be the next additions to my weapons' collection. smilies/rolleyes.gif

I bought the most beautiful sword this summer that looks extremely Elvish (albeit a bit on the scrawny side) and I carted it around on my shoulder all day at my school's Renaissance Festival. It was so cool, about 50 people came up to me and asked me if I was either an Elf or a Ranger. I just preened! Of course then I proceeded to get challenged by a six-foot-something guy wearing extremely thick cardboard armor, with an extremely huge wooden sword. Needless to say, I didn't quite win that battle, but I did slice his hauberk off! smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Gorwingel: No, not the entire collection, just selected items. I'm not really interested in the orc scimitars or the Ringwraiths' swords. Mainly the "good guys" weapons. After the knives & dagger, I also want the scabbard for the Ranger sword. Herugrim (Theoden's sword) & Gúthwinë (Éomer's sword) will be available sometime in 2004 (I think), as well as Éowyn's & Boromir's swords. Eventually, they will also have the long Elvish sword (from the prologue & Helm's Deep)..the one with the really long hand grip and the long curved blade. Sooooo cool looking!! Who knew I would want to collect weapons...I've never even owned a pocket knife before. smilies/eek.gif

Samwise: Tolkien called it "a long white knife". When reading the books, I always considered it to be the color of the metal blade, but I think in the films they also made the wood a really light color (not to mention giving him that second knife).

Pewter... Ninnyhammers and noodles, it's beautiful all right. But a bit beyond the budget, if you follow me...
Of course, this week has been like that. Ebay got me! (convulses and falls on floor) After several smaller purchases of books (including Journeys of Frodo) and a CD of songs from the trilogy, I just won (and paid for smilies/eek.gif )a Fellowship deluxe 9-figure set. I probably will regret it just before payday next week. smilies/eek.gif smilies/eek.gif But later, I'm going to set it up on one of my top shelves, maybe on a sheet of rock or among several lichen-covered rocks, and perhaps some moss... maybe a mural of mountains behind them.
The other grand addition (lately) besides the Smeagol statue that came with the movie, was, the No Admittance Except on Party Business bookends. I just love that moment, anticipating the greeting of friends. "Come in, come in! How about a bottle of Old Winyards?" "Just tea, thank you."

I'll just have to wait until I get my PSAT scores back, and pray that I made it into the National Merit Scholarship program. My dad (bless his heart!) told me that he'd give me a blank check if I did make it in, so I'm waiting until December before splurging on a bunch of Lord of the Rings memorabilia. If not that, then I hope that I get un-grounded from using my credit card (I got grounded in the first place for buying a crummy version of the Ring of Barahir and an Aragorn cut-out from tolkientown.com) so that I can order stuff.

Ah. Makes sense. Thankfully, I've only had one bad experience buying things over the internet, but I don't have a credit card so it didn't have anything to do with that kind of thing. My mom is "iffy" about buying things over the internet, too. I'm old enough, though, that my parents just fret about stuff, they don't tell me not to (well, in that respect.....)

I had worn it on my coat to dinner, and then a little bit after I had left the resturant is realized it was no longer on my coat. Alatariel-- Shucks! (blushes) Thanks. I just had this mental image of the fellowship cresting that mountain, one at a time... and some of those flybys... great scenery. Now where will I get the poster...? Oh, "Journeys of Frodo" is by Barbara Strachey. It's somewhat similar to Fonstadt's atlas, but more detailed, and obviously very Frodo-centric (see title...) So therefore, if you are indeed a Frodo addict, you "must-have-it-precious". Getting one is hard; I think they are out of print? (Hence my recklessness the other evening on ebay, and my delight in "winning".)
Now, as a Frodo addict myself, I consider my lack of a full-sized, glistening, leather-scabbarded Sting to be a grave problem. The next time I can't imagine what else to do with several hundred dollars... smilies/rolleyes.gif
On another thread, I mentioned the CD I just got... LOVE IT. The TOlkien Song Cycle by Andi Grimsditch, or some such name? Also on ebay. Snatch it up. Dirt cheap, pretty good music-- some of the tunes are even singable. smilies/wink.gif

Samwise: Ok, I'm really envious now. I may have to switch to AOL just for Elijah's voice... smilies/tongue.gif
Samwise, there's a video (on same site I belive) of Elijah Wood reading a book called "Me and My Cat?".
Who originally posted the link? Morai, was it you? Could someone repost, as I can't locate the original?
Alatariel-- Shucks! (blushes) Thanks. I just had this mental image of the fellowship cresting that mountain, one at a time... and some of those flybys... great scenery. Now where will I get the poster...?
If you have a pretty good printer, you can probably download one of those shots & print it yourself, although I don't know if 8x10 would be large enough. Maybe allposters or...ebay? smilies/rolleyes.gif
(Hence my recklessness the other evening on ebay, and my delight in "winning".)
...and I was really trying to stay away from ebay--at least till after Christmas. Ebay is like Lay's potato chips..I can't stop at just one. smilies/evil.gif:
Now, as a Frodo addict myself, I consider my lack of a full-sized, glistening, leather-scabbarded Sting to be a grave problem. The next time I can't imagine what else to do with several hundred dollars...
Helen: I've seen the official Sting & scabbard on ebay (where else?) quite reasonably. I also like shopping for weapons here (http://www.mithrilarmoury.com/).
1) TTT Soundtrack (for Gollum's fish song)
2) ROTK Soundtrack (I've heard that Billy Boyd "Pippin" sings on it)
3) "Walking With Frodo" Another Christain devotional for LOTR
4) Toys, (maybe like a light up Sting, action figures etc)
Morai: 1) Unfortunately, the "fish song" isn't on the soundtrack, just "Gollum's Song" that plays during the credits. 2) And not just Billy..I've heard Viggo sings as well. 3) Who sings that? I don't think I've ever heard of that song before. 4) Target or Elf-Mart have the best prices for action figures.

For those who are slightly confused by my last post:
Devotional: A religous book that usually applies spiritual teachings to real life. (For instance, christiain devotionals compare or apply biblical teachings to books, movies, life etc.)
Atáriel: Yeah, I've heared about Viggo's musical talents, he's apparently making a cd (or it's already released, not sure...) called pandimoniumfromamerica
(as far as I know, it's all one word.)
How sad, I was hoping to memorize that "fish song" oh well....

Hi-ho! Well, added a wee bit to my LOTR collection today, some photos off the web of the cast at the Wellington premiere, and a book (magazine)...I can't quite tell the title of it for all the words on the front--I think it might be "Fantasy Worlds" #3....
anywho, it showcases ROTK, has interviews with Li'l Mr. Wood, Miranda Otto and the guy who played my fave Lil' hobbit--(like you don't know who that is. smilies/wink.gif ) the reason I bought it--'cause I would never have bought a $7.00 mag otherwise. Lots of good pics in it of "everybody" so to speak. I also got (though I won't offically recieve it 'til Christmas) an LOTR movie calendar for 2004. There's a store in our local outlet mall that sells--for the most part--calendars, and I picked out the one I liked (again, one that gave satisfactory "photo time" to my fave Hobbit), then proceeded to leave the store so my mother could buy it for me w/o my "seeing". smilies/wink.gif
On another note:
smilies/biggrin.gifI have five dollars and seven cents to go until Sting is mine ! ! ! ! ! ! ! smilies/biggrin.gif

Other good news... I just received my replacement Lorien brooch smilies/smile.gif
It is kind of weird because this time it came in much finer packaging than my first one. My first one came in a little white box, nothing more, nothing less. But this one still came in a white box, but the box has a LOTR sleeve on it, and then inside the white box was a wood box in which the pin was located.
Forever though I will wonder if anyone found my brooch, and if they had an Aragorn moment (you know, when he picks up Pippin's brooch in the field) when they picked it up. It was the weirdest thing when I lost it though because it seemed to dissapeared without a trace. My mother thinks someone took it. But I don't want to think that someone did that. Oh well smilies/cool.gif

Q smilies/biggrin.gifid you get to take away and great souvenirs from the set?

I've got seven big movie posters (one from each movie for each my rooms plus one poster with the map), countless smaller ones collected from magazines, some really nice A4-size pictures printed on photo paper (all my love to Empire), the Ring, three calendars, a pencil case and a Saruman-note book. I've probably got more as well, I just can't think of anything more right now. smilies/biggrin.gif

Yesterday I braved the snowstorm (1 foot so far) and went to the post office to pick up my Fellowship Gift Set... Merry Christmas to me. So the Nine Walkers are marching across the top of one of my bookshelves. They need a mountainous footing and a panoramic background, but due to the snow, they'll have to wait for both.
I took my husband aside yesterday and showed him Strider's sword-arm actions. Of course he thinks I'm nuts, but we knew that. I also spent quite some time trying to get Legolas's bow-arm into proper position. They gave him much too short a bow. Perhaps I'll make him a "real" one... (like mine.)
My brother in law decided he didn't like his Smeagol statue that came with the DVD, so he shipped it to me, so I have two. After watching the Gollum special DVD last night, I took another look at them, and the differences are fascinating. (I like having two Smeagols instead of one Smeagol one Gollum; to me it seems even more schizophrenic...)
Samwise, I like that quote. Good boy is right. I've got "Into the West" on the brain right now, and somehow it seems so appropriate that Sean would have kept pack and walking stick and sword! Of course to be totally authentic, he should have gotten Sting, and I hear that Elijah has it. But I guess from an actor's standpoint it makes sense that way too.
If I was Elijah I would have wanted to keep the Phial of Galadriel...

Yeah, you're right. Depends on how you look at it. Sting was "Frodo's" sword, so I guess they figured Li'l Mr. Wood should have it. (and he DID get it).
If I was Elijah I would have wanted to keep the Phial of Galadriel...
Mmm...yes. Now THAT definitely would have been something that should have gone to Frodo.

Added to my collection only recently, I obtained a "Lord of the Rings, pocket companion" Oh it is so cute, it's only 3 by 2 1/2 inches. Basically it summarizes each character and chief place in the LOTR books. Howerer, it has oodles of mistakes, like saying that Frodo and Sam stop and rest at Helm's Deep before their journey. But I care not. Finally a Lotr book I can carry in my pocket, literally!

I'm getting a load of stuff for Christmas but I actually wanted to tell you all about my "collector's moment"
I took my daughter's toys away because she didn't put them away (house rules) so she snuck into my bedroom and I found her playing with my LOTR Action figures instead. Her little way of retaliating.

Well, Miss Rae, I guess you haven't read any of my other posts concerning this (or have you?), but it has to do with eatin' candy bars and getting a code out of the wrapper, then going to a website, entering the code, and getting a certain amount of "virtual cash". My "eta" is....whenever I down the last candy bar, enter the last code, and the numbers all add up. Haven't been eating so fast of late 'cause I've been feeling a bit ill, (ah, medications are wonderful things--specially when they make you feel sicker than what they're supposed to help you with) smilies/tongue.gif, but anywho, it's for an Electronic "Light'n'Sound" Sting, as I more than likely will never in this lifetime be able to afford a "real" Sting.

Well, I was out shopping today and made an addition to my collection. smilies/smile.gif
It is a holographic-cover TV Guide with our Frodo on the cover, and between the look on his face and the "sparkle" they've added to his eyes it looks like he's about to cry. smilies/frown.gif
The other two covers I saw were of Gandalf and Aragorn--I didn't see the fourth (each cover says 1 of 4)--but I sadly doubt the fourth was of my Sam. Grrrr. smilies/rolleyes.gif

A little something to add;
A map entitled "Journey of the One Ring" which was produced by NewLine Cinema but was printed in the local newspaper. Basically it shows part of Middle Earth (from Hobbiton in the Shire to as far southeast as the Mountains of Mordor. Small lines are drawn to show the journeys of the Fellowship throughout LOTR. It's kinda cool, so I thought, "why not keep it?"

You're right. The fourth cover was Gollum! (I purchased the one with Aragorn, since they didn't have Frodo in the store.)
But I wouldn't worry about Samwise. The buzz is that he comes off as the real hero of the movie, and that his acting is so good that some of the critics are saying he deserves an Oscar...

Miss Lynn, are you MADE of money??? Goodness, the mere DESCRIPTION of your Anduril seems expensive!!!
Samwise: I sure wish I was...but I got a really wonderful "pre-order special" price on Andúril, and it wound up being one of the least expensive in my collection. I'm really glad I ordered it when I did, though. My weapons website now shows 'sold out'.
Helen: Dang! I didn't read your post on "Frodo's Journey" until today. I've been doing all my Christmas shopping & trying to get to Lothlórien for the past week or so. I'll have to go surf ebay when it gets a bit less hectic.
Small update: I bought the RotK soundtrack last week. I really like it. I also bought the "Aragorn with Andúril" poster at Target today. Yesterday, I went to the LotR marathon and won (for a book trivia contest) a postcard book of Hildebrant artwork, and a miniature Frodo gamepiece for a LotR game. Although I didn't win a prize for it, I was the only one able to name all 13 dwarves from 'The Hobbit'. Aaannnddd for being the only one in the theatre who knew (or at least the first one to shout it out) Galdalf's dwarvish name, I received a lovely handmade banner proclaiming me "über geek" and was crowned "queen of the Tolkien geeks" with a golden crown. My non-Tolkien friends and my daughter have been shaking their heads and calling me geeky for quite a while...I now have the crown to prove it!!

Foils:
Sauruman
Merry and Pippin (with the Fool-of-a-Took grin on his face) smilies/wink.gif
King Theoden in armor
Blue-Bordered stickers:
Gimli w/battle axe
Pip, looking a bit beaten up (I believe its right before or right after he and Merry escape from the Uruk-Hai)
Brown-Bordered stickers:
Aragorn about to skewer something at Helm's Deep
Gandalf (still the Grey) getting a nuzzle from Shadowfax
Wormtounge (from the looks of the pic turned to give false advice to Theoden)
A long-distance shot--I believe of the people of Rohan headed for Helm's Deep
Gandalf the White and the freed-from-a-nasty-spell King Theoden in the throne room
Sauruman giving orders to the wild men (and I swear one of them looks like Peter Jackson--I know he had some cameos....)
Random shot of the wild men (I know they have a "proper" name, but can't think of it.)
Gandalf the White in the forest (assumedly upon meeting the Three Hunters) King Theoden looking serious (when did he not?) smilies/wink.gif
Eomer in armor "And what buisness do a man, an Elf, and a Dwarf....?"
The three hunters and Gandalf talking with Eomer and his men
A shot of Li'l Mr. Wood's hands holding the Ring.
A nasty-looking Orc
Yet another nasty-looking Orc
Frodo captured by Rohan (with that awful look of distress on his face.)
Sam and Frodo held by the soldiers of Rohan (darn it, why couldn't the one pic of Sam and Frodo been at a more cheerful moment????)
Gandalf (again in the forest, and again right after he reaveals his identity to the 3 hunters)
A wild man Gimli at Helm's Deep
and
Saruman looking t'd off or like he's barking orders.
Oh, well. Maybe I'll have better luck next time.

I seem to resist calling myself a "collector," but after reading some of the posts on this thread, I may have to re-evaluate my status! I don't usually go looking for anything but the books, but after I had re-read the LOTR and discovered I was in love with Pippin and had an almost unhealthy obsession with Frodo, I had to get a representation of them to look at me every day in my living room, on my computer, etc. etc...and so it began! Pippin's tiny Burger King figure with base looks quizzically in my direction from his high vantage point on my computer tower as I type this. The thing that put me over the threshold is my late purchase of Sting with Scabbard. Sure, a great addition to my thrift-store Frodo outfit, I justified it to myself...and I wear my Frodo gear in some part ALL the time! (In fact, my home is so disorganized that I can only find ONE vest, and that only because it is my Frodo vest and was recently worn!) Without further ado, the collection as it stands:
2003 Two Towers Calendar (Gimli looks out thoughtfully over his axe from it as I type)[/*]
Random Burger King figures: 2 Pippins, one with base, Frodo, Gandalf, Elrond, Legolas, Saruman, Arwen on Asfaloth, shimmery see thru Galadriel.[/*]
Merry and Pippin with Elven Cloaks from FOTR (still in box--can't bring myself to take them out!)[/*]
Toy Biz Collectible Frodo figure from FOTR with authentically styled fabric and accessories--this was a gift from my "Elfbopper" friend who teases me about my Frodophilicity--I haven't taken this one out either, and I can't tell if he has the Ring!!! (Anyone know? )[/*]
Sting with Scabbard--got it on ebay, and it does not appear to be the official one, but I got it for about 1/3 price of the official one. I'm waiting to see if rust spots appear to determine which method to use to sharpen it! (I'd like to be able to kill orcs with it if I'm going to carry it!). Not sure if it is stainless or carbon steel--if its carbon steel, it will turn slowly blue! smilies/biggrin.gif[/*]
Books: several complete and incomplete sets of LOTR, mostly the 1973 Tolkien illustrated covers editions (my favorites!), one near set of the 1960's puzzle covers, FOTR and TTT with Elijah and Orlando on covers, Unfinished Tales HB, Letters, Tolkien Reader, Silmarillion 1979 Ballantine PB 1st ed., 2 copies of the Tolkien illustrated Hobbit, Understanding Tolkien (a 60's quickie I picked up at a thrift store) [/*] custom illustration (somewhat non-canon as the illustrator has never read Tolkien) of Finrod's fight with the werewolf in Morgoth's dungeons.[/*]
Movies: EE versions on VHS of FOTR and TTT, my (unfindable!) copy of Ian McKellen hosting Saturday Night Live, probably my favorite of all time (except for the fact that I totally missed Elijah on SNL!)[/*]
I can't think of aught else except my collection of jpegs, but I'm sure there will be more as time goes by!
Oh, and I remember one of you said you had tiny hobbit socks and hobbit pants--it occurs to me that my misfortune to wear high water pants seems to have turned to a natural hobbitwear wardrobe in these later times! (That, and my predilection for wearing white buttondown shirts with vests, which has been the case for years!). All my socks are what I call "Huck Finn socks," since I live in a wood floored home with nails that work their way out and snag every pair of socks I have until they are full of holes!
Sorry to have gone on so long! Hope I was entertaining! smilies/wink.gif
Cheers,

Lyta,
For someone who is "not a collector" it sounds as if you have accumulated a pile of interesting things!
I have been hunting down books by and about Tolkien for a ton of years in garage sales, bookstores, and more recently on e-bay, and have gradually accumulated quite a pile. I have an overflowing bookcase in my dining room. However, I definitely don't have any swords and the only action figures in the house belong to my daughter. But I do collect calendars, old and new, and postcards. Some of my stuff goes back to the late sixties/early seventies. More recently, I'm buying the little Rawcliffe pewter figures one at a time.
Anyways, it's always a challenge to look for something a long time and finally manage to unearth it somewhere for a reasonable price. As you can tell from the tagline under my name, I am definitely partial to "Bilbo's Last Song". The first publication of that poem was actually in a poster from 1974--appropriately enough, the year after Tolkien died. It is a view of the harbor at the Havens with the sea in the distance and the poem overlaid in the center of the page. I found one on e-bay so it's now up in my house along with my other favorite posters.
There's one other purchase I'm making that I am "blaming" on Samwise!
smilies/rolleyes.gif I always remember how she talked about getting the statue of Sam and Bill the Pony. My local fantasy store had just one left..... So now guess who has a Sam statue on layaway! I figured, if there was one character I wanted to remember from the movies just as he was played, it would be Sam. (I am fascinated by book Frodo, but Elijah Wood's Frodo, although good, just wasn't the same.)

Ooo, Child, you've got the bug.
Lyta, sounds like you & I would make a good pair. I wear hobbit-clothes all the time. I went to the movie in "regular clothes" (for me) plus a cloak and Lorien brooch; and everyone thought I had "dressed up" as an elf. Lots of compliments.
This is a costume??? I thought it was regular clothes. Since it was winter, I wore long pants and wool socks with the sandals, so they assumed elf instead of hobbit. I forgive 'em.
The folks at work have me pegged. ONe gave me a TTT EE calendar. When I sit at my desk, I'm confronted with angry Frodo, Sting pointing at my throat. (Don't you know your Sam???) And another colleague (in the "Secret Santa exchange") gave me an in-costume Gandalf. Wow.
Our best friends and my husband teamed up to find me LOTR Backgammon (definitely what they play at Edoras) and Trilogy Trivial Pursuit... Amazing. The new TP rules blow my mind.
THe Fellowship marches across my Northeast bookshelf; the Mirkwood longbow rests atop my southwest bookshelf. Three sets of Bookends (okay, I have two Smeagols and not One each Smeagol/Gollum, but the second Smeagol was free...) A mini-Legolas; a Bag-End keychain...
Embarassing quantities of paperback Boxed sets of the Trilogy + Hobbit. Many critical books... maybe someday I'll read them all... (blushes) I'm still missing some of the final HoME series: Sauron Defeated and Peoples of Middle Earth. The rest are all there waiting...
Both Theatrical and extended of FotR and TTT, Rankin-Bass hobbit & RotK, and Bakshi, and a couple other odd shows.
MUSIC: woohoo! All three soundtracks; all three Tolkien Ensemble CDs; Starlit Jewel (pride & joy); Andi Grimsditch; Giuseppe Festa (aka "LinGalad": totally awesome); plus whatever I could download off the net like the Donald Swann stuff and some freebie clips; plus 2 ancient Rankin-Bass LPs that I have to get onto CD somehow. Starlit Jewel Songbook.
Lotsa bookmarks. One Gandalf BK goblet.
BBC LotR on CD; American Hobbit on tape.
Many maps that I downloaded & printed from the net. Must hang them up! Or mount them like Bilbo did... or something.
Costume stuff: Two cloaks, one blue, one brown (must make a green/grey one!) Four cuorderoy and one velvet "Hobbit" jackets; one Bilbo red velvet vest (stil looking for a brown Frodo vest, AND now for a silver RotK "Havens" vest with sea-blue jacket... )
And a GORGEOUS personalized LOTR mug that Rae made for me. You **rule**, babe.
(Blushing: I wonder what I forgot.)
No wonder everyinone thinks I'm nuts. My only consolation/ defense is that my friend's kid has WAY more action figures than I do (He's got all the bad guys too.)
Next question... do I want the United Cutlery Sting or the inexpensive one...?

There's one other purchase I'm making that I am "blaming" on Samwise!
I always remember how she talked about getting the statue of Sam and Bill the Pony.
Child
Hm...should I head for the hills, or is that sort of a thankyou? smilies/wink.gif Are you saying you got Sam and Bill, or just Sam? My Sam and Bill just melted my heart when I saw it at Sideshow Toy's website...I'm afraid my Bill has a little scratch on his "buisness end" from my pushing him a little too far back into the "wood" where they reside, and some of the paint may have come off the top of Sam's head from my...yes, kissing the top of his head. My Frodo is in pristine condition, but he hasn't been "loved" so much.
Yesterday I recieved my "surprise" gift: LOL...an LOTR ROTK 2004 calendar! I think I may have posted it here or in the "LOTR Christmas Presents: Post Here" thread, but (at the risk of repeating myself) my mother, grandmother and I went into a store a few weeks ago, and I chose a calendar that showcased my Sam as much as possible, then proceeded to leave the store so that my mother could buy it "without my seeing!" smilies/wink.gif
I was surprised, however, pleasantly, because my mother did not buy the little 5x5 calendar we were looking at, but the regular-sized wall version! smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Samwise,
Definitely a thank you!
Yes, I ordered Sam with his pony. And the first place I heard about this piece was from you.
I have the top of my piano decorated with figures from LotR and the Hobbit, some from the movie and some much earlier. So Sam and Bill will go right in the center, since it will be the largest piece I have.
That is....if I ever manage to get it out of layaway!

Well, I got the LotR Trivial Pursuit Game, so my Updated Collection consists of:
- Books: The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings (Edition 1: three paper back books, FotR has Frodo on the cover, TTT has Legolas, and RotK has Aragorn; Edition 2: Nice, shiny, red leather, expensive collector's edition), Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Lost Road and Other Tales, Morgoth's Ring, Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Magical Worlds of The Lord of the Rings (David Colbert), Hobbits, Elves, and Wizards (Michael N. Stanton), Tolken's World from A to Z: The Complete Guide to Middle-earth.
- Movies: FotR (Theatrical & Extended), TTT (Theatrical & Extended), numerous recordings of TV specials on LotR or Middle-earth
- Posters: FotR (the Argonath), TTT (Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli), a poster of Smaug, and numerous magazine clippings, newspaper clippings, and other bits of LotR that can go on my wall
- Weapons: Soronnaro (pommel is made up of two eagle heads, back to back, the handle is made of mahogany, and the rest of the hilt is in silver, along with the sword), a bowie knife that looks remarkably like Aragorn's hunting knife
- Jewelry: All the charms from the bookmarks, the Ring of Barahir, Narya (a rather cheap version), and Vilya (another rather cheap version)
- Misc: life-size Aragorn cardboard cut-out, Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit Games, all the bookmarks, 2003 TTT Calendar, and a rather pretty collage that I made from the Noble Collection catalog and other magazines, mounted on a cork bulletin board spray-painted gold, a candle-holder made up of intricate vine shapes ending in circular "fruits," in gold

Our best friends and my husband teamed up to find me LOTR Backgammon (definitely what they play at Edoras)
Helen: Ooooh, where did you find LotR backgammon? I don't think I've seen that in the stores.
Next question... do I want the United Cutlery Sting or the inexpensive one...?
Helen: Depends on what you want it for...the UC is better quality & is the licensed reproduction, so it's more collectible. I've seen the UC's on ebay for very reasonable prices, too.
Update: I've added a few things, not necessarily for Christmas. I took my grandchildren to see RotK last Saturday, and we went to Half-Price Books afterwards: I found an oversized hardback copy of Ted Nasmith's illustrated "Silmarillion" in pretty good condition. When I got home & looked closer, I discovered it was also a first edition. Also found a first edition of "Book of Lost Tales Part Two". I already had a first edition of BolT Part One that I bought years ago, but haven't been able to find a matching part two till now. They also had a book called "A Reader's Guide to The Silmarillion" by Paul Kocher. I don't know how good it is (never heard of it before), but it was only $4 so I figured, what the heck! As Christmas gifts, I got 3-inch individual action figures of Frodo, Sam & Legolas. I also got 6-inch figures of Aragorn (Pelennor Fields), Sam (orc armor), Frodo (orc armor), Gollum & Smeagol. Since I already have 2 each of Aragorn, Sam & Frodo, I'll be exchanging them for something else LotR-related. I also got the "There and Back Again" set of figures with Bilbo, Merry, Pippin, Sam & Frodo in their Grey Havens outfits, with a miniature copy of the Red Book. Since I only have the one set, I will probably exchange the 3 figures above for a second set to display.

That is one thing I have been wondering about. I have been thinking of increasing my collection of books, and have been thinking of maybe visiting used book stores and places like that, but have been wondering if there is nothing avaliable because of the popularity of the films. I really would like to find some of the older novels, because all of the copies I have are new and I only have one Hardback (actually two now smilies/smile.gif ). But I won one of them. So how avaliable are Tolkien's books?
Oh and just to add... I have actually found myself to be perfectly content with just my Sting. The only thing that I have thought of maybe adding is the white knives of Legolas. It is just that I find the other swords to be way to large for me. Sting I find to be just a perfect size smilies/cool.gif

Lyta: I'm glad I'm not the only one with a Frodo obsession. And now that you have Sting, you may find that one sword is not enough... Oooh, Alatariel! I hope I don't go that way! Sting is probably the only one I can carry with me! I've carried it on two of my walk sessions (now headed to Lothlorien!) along with my not-so-elven cloak and other assorted hobbit-wear! I don't think I could do that with Narsil or Glamdring, but I'd be tempted by Gimli's axe! His helmet is ultra cool too! Or my long held dream of wielding a bow of the Galadhrim, even though I can't pull more than about 20 lbs. smilies/rolleyes.gif and would be hopeless with any real bow!
Lyta, sounds like you & I would make a good pair. I wear hobbit-clothes all the time. I went to the movie in "regular clothes" (for me) plus a cloak and Lorien brooch; and everyone thought I had "dressed up" as an elf. Lots of compliments. That DOES sound a bit like me! I actually wore knee pants to the premiere, but had long socks and sandals to protect my feet. Luckily, the pants were thick wool, so they kept me nice and warm, AND they had pockets for my hobbitish tendency to secret food anywhere I can... smilies/wink.gif No one's going to keep me from breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, lunch, dinner, supper, evening snack, etc. etc. etc....
Cheers!
Lyta (who now wants the mithril vest, but isn't holding out hope anytime soon!)
P.S. I DON'T have the One Ring and probably never will; after all, there is only one in reality, and I think Elijah Wood has it, so I can't possibly have it! smilies/wink.gif I wear my wedding ring on a chain. I won't be casting THAT into Mt. Doom anytime soon!

I bought a thirty pound Mirkwood Longbow thinking it would be weeks or months before I could draw it. Nope! I drew it the first day I had it... only a few times the first day but it steadily increased.
THe big thing is findng a good archery teacher. (How lucky can I be-- my husband is a Master Coach.) But if you want to do Elvish Archery, don't sell yourself short. You can get a decent bow for less than you can get a decent sword, at least that's what I found...

Lyta, how badly do you want to do archery? You can build up surprising strength with a pair of five pound weights (5 each, that is). Actually, Helen, it is one of those "one of these days" ideas in the back of my head. Right now, I am working on fixing my walking staves and shoeing them with something, and after that, sharpening my off-brand Sting sword (although I believe it is stainless and will take quite a bit of sweat to do!) After that, I plan to tear apart my thrift store Frodo jacket and make another (larger, more comfortable!) sized hobbit jacket in the proper fashion...I've found my 20 pound bow, but it lacks a string. Also got some arrows with really bada$$ points on them! Probably too good for my bow! I had thought to cut one or two of the bent arrows to make my husband a Boromir plus arrows costume, but haven't gotten to it yet (like everything else!). Also, add to the collection one small sized ROTK calendar that hangs incongruously in a large space on the wall! (Yet another Frodo image staring from the right hand wall!) smilies/wink.gif
So, I found a couple at what I think may be good prices, but I've never purchased anything like this before. What do you folks think?
Samwise, I looked at the price on that site, and it is indeed about 40 some dollars cheaper than BudK, the leading mailorder knife company, but it depends on whether you want the licensed one or the knockoff. I've got the knockoff (for $47 on Ebay) and it came with the sheath (the BudK Sting doesn't come with the sheath, and still costs $150 bucks!). I wanted a Sting I could carry with me on my long walks, so I didn't care to have a display model. I've already soaked the scabbard end in a few puddles, but the metal accent there is VERY handy for keeping the rest of it dry! If you're aiming for a display model like the one shown on your link, then the official one is probably a good bet, as it appears to come with a wall mounting thingy. Sometimes, though, you can find the official ones on Ebay for less, so I'd suggest looking around there a bit!
Cheers!

When you say "display", you mean the sword is actually attatchedto the display plaque?
Lyta_Underhill

When you say "display", you mean the sword is actually attatchedto the display plaque? You know, I've never looked into it, but I would not think they would issue it that way. I don't think decorative swords are normally sold that way. Every other decorative sword with stand I've seen has been separate from its stand. In fact one I looked at on Ebay (official model) says "silk screened wooden plaque included," so it must be separate. I suppose most of the Ebay models are knockoffs, really, so that was good enough for someone like me who takes it out every day and walks around the wilds with it! There does seem to be a bewildering array though! I hope some of this helped!
Cheers,
Lyta (that crazy woman who walks down the street with a cloak and a sword...)

A 30-pound bow is usually all right for a relative newcomer to archery. I take regular archery lessons, and I use a 30-lb. bow with a fair amount of ease. Lyta, if you're going to actually take the bow about, I would highly recommend that you not try to actually shoot it unless you're in an archery range, or you know that you're absolutely alone. An arrow wound can be quite painful... and lethal. smilies/wink.gif

Lyta, if you're going to actually take the bow about, I would highly recommend that you not try to actually shoot it unless you're in an archery range Worried you, did I? smilies/wink.gif No, actually, it is Sting that I carry about. I also carry a walking staff, so I'd probably die of terminal overburdening if I tried to add a bow! I just harbor this idea in the back of my head that someday I'll be able to shoot a bow! Also, I live in the middle of nowhere and used to practice regularly with a slingshot on walnut and hideously fruited so-called "Bodark Apple" trees. It is so satisfying to drop a one pound fruit at 30 yards! smilies/biggrin.gif My entire realm is an archery range! (Thus, it is VERY easy to lose arrows!)

Well, this is United Cutlery, which seems pretty reputable The one in the link you posted is not a knockoff, nor are the ones offered in the BudK catalog. United Cutlery did the licensed edition, I believe. A lot of Ebay auctions, however, do not have the words "United Cutlery" or "licensed" anywhere in the text, although they proudly list the history of the sword back to Gondolin sometimes. The best policy is to email the seller and ask for details, such as maker, is it licensed, etc. and also check their previous feedback to make sure others haven't bought in good faith only to be let down in the end.
Really, aren't they all, save the one I believe is now owned by Elijah Wood? Maybe you should make him an offer? smilies/wink.gif I wouldn't even try for the One Ring, though! smilies/tongue.gif Seriously, I've never had any inclination to own the One Ring in any of its forms...there is just too much irony in owning one of millions of "One Rings." No biggie--I still haven't been to S. CA in x amount of years and could use a trip down there. Typical Hobbit that I am, I tend to be non-adventurous.
Aw...the Little One's gone and flown the coop, left the nest, GROWN UP!!!*sniffle*
smilies/frown.gif I'll bet he did sound proud of himself. smilies/wink.gif Wonder why New York, of all places. Seems awfully far from his family.
smilies/frown.gif (Aw, man...there I go with that motherly instinct again...!) smilies/rolleyes.gif He's almost 23...
Okay, *AHEM* back on the subject. Don't know how many of you have these, but a "Dollar Store" (this one's called "Dollar or More") recently opened near where I work, and I was killing time between getting off of work and a haircut appt. So I walk in, look to the right, and what to I see on a shelf but LOTR Valentines. Heh....how could I resist. Originally I was only going to get one box, as some I intend to share, but the other is for...the future, posterity, whatever....Naturally, THE COLLECTION! smilies/wink.gif I haven't opened either box yet (they're both the same designs) but from the look of it they're the perforated elementary-school kind, which is fine, 'cause the pictures are nice, and they're all foil. The verses are cheesy, but at the same time cute.
Pic: Frodo, with that darned haunted look on his face: Verse: Our Freindship Rings True
Pic: Gandalf the White: Verse: Hope your Valentine's day is full of surprises!
Pic: Lego: Verse: Hope your Valentine's Day is right on target!
Pic: Sam( smilies/biggrin.gif), with that o-so-thoughtful "He's got more in that head of his than he lets on about" look on his face; Verse: One friendship to rule them all.
Pic: Eowyn, Verse: Hope your Valentine's Day is Stunning!
Pic: "The Three Hunters" and Gandalf on horseback. Verse: Hope your Valentine's Day is full of adventure!
Pic: Aragorn, Verse:There are Great things ahead for you, Valentine!
Pic: Treebeard, Verse: I'll be there for you on Valentine's Day!
Pic: Gimli looking like he's grumbling about the stiff necks of Elves, Verse: Have a grand Valentine's day!
And last but not least, the possibly farmiliar pic of Merry and Pippin, Pip with the "Fool of a Took" grin on his face and his arm over Merry's shoulder, and Merry trying to look distinguished...Verse: I'll stay by your side on Valentine's Day! smilies/wink.gif
[EDIT]
- Sam in Orc armor (Sting comes out of the sheath! )
Isn't that cool!? I believe that all of the swords do...at least the Sting on my "Sam and Frodo in the Elven Boat" does, as well as Sam's barrowblade, and the one on him in the "Sam in Moria" action station I have... smilies/biggrin.gif Not to mention on the latter his saucepan comes out of his hand, just in case he wants to take a break from whacking Orcs and cook! Those action figures are sooo cool!
No, Miss Rilwen, I will most certainly not give up on my Sting. As a matter of fact, I'm zeroing in on one at one of the many websites you folks have given and intend to use part of tomorrow's paycheck for it....
Okay, this post has been way too long. I'll hush, now.

Anyway, one more note, I now have one of those ROTK bookmarks, the one with poor Frodo on one side, with Gandalf on the other. SCORE! And the other day I came across the one with Aragorn/Arwen, but I'll send that to my friend in Missouri.

Mt. Doom smilies/smile.gif
That was the one thing that actually surprised me, the most valuable properties are actually the most evil of places. The second most valuable is Bara-dur, also known as Park Place in the normal version. I personally thought that Lorien would be more valuable. But maybe is is just more valuable in my eyes.
Wonder why New York, of all places.
Hey, I would move to New York if I could, it is such a great place. I have been to both LA and NYC, and NYC is much, much better in my opinion. Manhattan (where he is living) is a wonderful place, it has more of a small town feel than many small towns that I have visited. Finwe, ooo, you shoot? Both Legolas' bows are recurves but I bought a "Mirkwood Longbow"... all that means is it's black-and-silver... but I really like it. I have finally completed my collection of little LotR figurines from Kindereggs! After getting more duplicates of the troll than anything else, I decided to trade and buy the last ones from a trader's stand at a flea market. I now have the complete series, all three years (one for each movie), including the special packages, as listed below:
FotR (http://www.2ndwind.de/int/001.jpg)
TTT (http://www.2ndwind.de/int/002.jpg)
Treebeard and light-up Saruman package (http://www.eierlei.de/default.php?R=30&content=sonderzwei/sonderzwei)
RotK (http://www.eierlei.de/default.php?R=30&content=herrderringe/herrderringe)
Gandalf and/on Shadowfax package (http://www.eierlei.de/default.php?R=30&content=sonder/sonder)
The figurines are 2 to 3 inches high, wonderfully detailed and beautifully painted. They occupy a shelf next to my computer, right above the shelf with well over 30 Tolkien and -related books!

mark, that's just perfect for me! Right now, I shoot with a 28-inch recurve, whose draw weight is about 30 lbs., and I can easily shoot three arrows without resting in between (and I'm only 5'2")!. That longbow sounds absolutely gorgeous! If you don't mind me asking, about how much was it? I want to buy either a longbow or a recurve (I'm leaning towards recurve because I'm more used to that type of bow). It would be so incredibly cool if I managed to get into a couple of barebow competitions using one of the Legolas bows!

Kindereggs are small egg-sized chocolates, milk on the outside, white on the inside. Inside the hollow egg is a small toy or game. As far as I know, they're an exclusively European product, originally from Germany. They'll run series of specific toys, and people will try to collect them. I didn't know they had an LOTR set...... I wish I still lived in Europe so that I could get some. smilies/frown.gif

Ainaserkewen
01-28-2004, 03:10 PM
Aren't they? I always assumed so because if they have them in Canada, the states must have them to, right? I'm also assuming that the kindereggs are those Kinder suprise things right? The description is the same. Chocolate egg, little toy inside...am I right?
Estelyn Telcontar
01-28-2004, 04:13 PM
That's right, they're hollow chocolate eggs (their name in Germany translates as children's surprise eggs) with toys and figurines inside. Usually, I'm not interested, since most figurines are cutsie kiddie stuff, but once in awhile, they have a series connected with some movie or comic (Star Wars or Asterix, for example). In this case, they have had a series for the LotR movie release the past three years.
I know that the figurines aren't always the same - different countries have different series, so it's possible that other European countries or Canada don't have them. Check with collectors or try the internet for information.
The problem with these little things is that you never know what's inside - it could be a figurine, or it could be a worthless toy. The chances of getting a figurine are only one in seven, so you have to buy a lot of chocolate eggs to get the figurines you want! Collectors develop tricks, like shaking to see if it's something with little parts, or weighing to see if it's heavy enough for a figurine. Even if you average better than the norm, chances are you get double of one and none of the other. That's why buying them from a trader's stand, from a collector's site or E-bay is a surer bet.
The links I posted show them close-up - they're only 2 - 3 inches high, for the most part.
It'll be interesting to hear if they've been issued in other countries as well!
Ainaserkewen
01-28-2004, 04:24 PM
Wow, I never knew people took them so seriously!? smilies/eek.gif But a hobbie's a hobby I suppose. I think you're right about the different country, different toy thing Estelyn. I've never seen figurines, only "worthless toys" as you put it. Worthless indeed, I love putting them together, then adding the stickers and finally trying them out, realising they don't work and throwing them away. smilies/wink.gif

I've never seen figurines, only "worthless toys" as you put it. Worthless indeed, I love putting them together, then adding the stickers and finally trying them out, realising they don't work and throwing them away.
When I was in Europe, I only bought one (I got a little Kangaroo). I had seen the figures on the internet before, but didn't realize that the eggs were connected to them in some way. I was also there in the summer, so they were not really doing the LOTR promotion at the time.
I think the reason that they don't have them in the U.S. is that they are edible eggs with toys in them. And in the U.S. that is considered a choaking hazard. But, yes, I have never seen them in a store here. They may be avaliable at specialty food stories, but I have only seen them in Europe.

That may be true, but they do have something called "Wonderballs" here in the States, which is a bit similar. They all have Disney related things in them though, to the best of my knowledge...and stickers or toys, if I remember rightly. For choking hazards they usually have a warning like "ages 3 and up" on the box or something like that.

Today, while shopping at a Naval Exchange, I saw "LotR" party table sets (the downside is I didn't buy any smilies/frown.gif )! smilies/biggrin.gif
- Hats with 2 Hobbits (I can't remember which)
- Invitations with Pippin and Merry
- Small plates with Frodo, Sam, and Gollum
and many more favors.
(There might have been a big plate with Saruman or Gandalf on it, hiding in the back of the shelf, but I'm not sure.)
Congratulations, Samwise! You will be getting your Sting soon enough! smilies/smile.gif

WHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! It came!!!!!!! And
, there are several pictures of me in my camera
with it, toooooo! It's soooooo beautiful--but, it's SHARP!
Already cut a hole in my bedsheet with the tip. ("OOPS." ala Elijah
Wood in Spy Kids 3).
To my surprise, my Dad liked it. Dunno why I was concerned. When he saw it, the first thing he said was that he'd make a shadowbox for it, but when he saw the plaque it's supposed to be mounted on, he said it wouldn't work. Bummer. Still not quite sure where on my wall it's going to go.
And may I say, before I, to borrow the phrase, "take my leave":

LOL.....it most definitely is, Miss Finwe.... ;) and that by request. A young lady who inhabits my own Little LOTR Discussion Board (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Number_3_Bagshot_Row/?yguid=39722730) made the dress, and our own Elf lady Raefindel made the cloak. Sorry, purple's one of my favorite colors. ;):D
Finwe
02-15-2004, 10:22 PM
Oh it's quite all right. I am a fan of purple myself, although my first choice would have to be black. I just wasn't prepared for the degree of... purpleness... in that picture. :D
Samwise
02-15-2004, 10:30 PM
It's quite purple, isn't it? ;) Well, they asked me what color I wanted, and I told them. Unfortunately, the computer made the pic a tad "shiny" too, I'm afraid, or did something wierd to it, so it really shouldn't be that intense. I just didn't know quite how to fix it, though I've tried. :(
Finwe
02-16-2004, 09:05 AM
You could try putting it into a photo-editing program, and lowering the brightness of the picture. The only problem is that it might make the rest of the picture overly dull. It's all right. It works excellently in the place of caffeine. :D

I do not collect toys on purpose, but I have one wormtongue figurine (sent to me by my brother-in-low, the reason as obscure to me as it is to you, probably, he thinks of himself as Grima? my sister certainly may be thought of as Eowyn, what with her golden hair and green/blue eyes, but the chap is quite a man, if you follow my meaning, kind sir, why not send Faramir?)
Though I'm proud holder of several editions and several translations of books :), among them the jewels - leatherette collection editions of LoTR and the Hobbit (to be found on Amazon) and illustrated Silmarillion

I can relate, H-I. After I bought the No Admittance bookends, I did buy the "fellowship" set, vaguely senseing that I'd regret NOT getting it once it was gone--it was closely followed by the gift of a Gandalf doll; a gandalf BK goblet, again a gift; and recently a BK Gandalf. Add that to the "NO ADMITTANCE" bookends -- I ended up with FOUR models of Gandalf plus goblet???
(***Frodo***, people. I'm a ***Frodo*** fan. Edit your databases....)
Just as well, I guess; there's a big gap between the models and Book-Frodo.

That is the trick, now isn't it, Estelyn. I frequently refuse offers of such games because I have no one with whom to play and would rather see the money spent on a new shirt or something I can use on a regular basis.

Lord of the Rings Monopoly? I need to see that. That was a very nice gift. :) What is Boardwalk, I wonder...? Anyways, I am the proud owner of a few things. I said I didn't want to bite into the whole marketing stuff, but ah well. I have the one ring that came out with the Fellowship, the Frodo goblet from BK, and the toy from the meal. Also the little red bookmark with the ring poem and the nine walkers on the bottom. I have three action figures, one from each movie. I have Frodo, Legolas, and Aragorn. I want to add more and get the fellowship, but we'll see. I had the Frodo/Sam boat set, but I gave it to my friend as a Christmas gift. I bought the paperback set with the movie pics on them that a local bookstore was selling. I knew the minute some people would see the movies they would want to read it. And guess who is the handy fantasy-type person is nearby? Luckily, all was return(whew), and now I have paperbacks handy just in case. Somone got my Sting for my birthday, but it's an off-the-brand model. Ah well, made for a good substitution for the real thing at a ren faire I went to last year. The kids there thought it was cool. It was a nice feeling to be recognized as a hobbit. ;) I also have all the editions of the movies, and the three soundtracks. The most amusing thing in my (growing) collection is the Lord of the Rings valentines they came out with this year and the last. I still crack up at Frodo's "Hope your valentine's rings true" :D Oh yeah, don't want to forget the 1, 2, 3, 4.....8 LOTR posters I have collected. I'm a sucker for pretty images.....*stares at her angsty Frodo poster*

I got a nice 1000 piece puzzle of "Smaug Dragon" by the Hildebrandt bros, at a flea market a couple weeks back. It was only $3.95! It's a SunsOut product. Never heard of them before. www.sunsout.com
I'll probably keep it in the shrink wrap for quite some time. Smaug's 50 million orangy red scales would probably drive me batty. There's also a big sword with a wavy blade!? Those crazy Hildebrandts! ;) :p

Games? Yeah, yeah! Got people, too. But for me the question is time... At Christmas I had SUCH a blast playing LOTR Risk with my brothers and Nephew (his game) that I threatened to buy a set for us. We planned on it-- but then, Peter got one for Christmas. We figured Peter, Ben, Gary, and me would be a great Risk game.
But we have yet to do it. Who has the time? (We should MAKE the time. Now that I'm home for a bit...?)
I "found" two more fans tonight... I went over their house to jam, and there on their bookshelf sat FOTR EE and TTT EE. Perhaps we'll do RotK before it leaves the theaters.
I know a fair selection of LotR enthusiasts, some more rabid than others. But LOTR Risk is a huge hit, even with fans of mediocre fervor. It's just a great game. One of my brothers I think hasn't seen any of the movies, but he had fun playing the game.
Rae, the little BK Gandalf is leaning against the card that came with my LinGalad mug. Very cool. But I am immersed in Gandalfs. What's the plural of Gandalf? Gandolphi??

I have a freind who has LOTR Movie version Trivial Pursuit....but he has such a busy schedule that we've only played once....I totally left him in the dust....;)though I must admit, if it had been based on the books, it would have been the other way around....:p

Pretty Rabid: "I have lots of costumes... but I don't wear them in public."

Hm. I think I fall somewhere in between these two. I on occasion wear my Hobbit costume to church, 'cause the dress is pretty, and the cloak is actually quite warm. Never made any of the above for my books, though. (Slipcovers? It would cover up the nice pic of Li'l Mr. Wood. Nuh-uh.):p

I'm somewhere between those two. I don't have any of the books (don't hurt me please, I read them at school) but I do cover my binder with Frodo pictures. Once I figure how to draw a hobbit, they'll be on my text books too.
I also wore my Frodo costume on my birthday once, though it was pretty cheesy. The wig completely ruined it, and I haven't wore it since.

(Edit as of 5:28 pm--oohh---!!! Less than two hours....)
Over the weekend, my dad hung my Sting on its plaque--very nice. :D It is right next to my LOTR calendar, which for the month of March has a pic of Legolas on horseback.
My latest piece of my collection I recieved today was a project a friend sent to me--kind of a panoramic collage she did for school.
The background is a panorama of a park-like spot. On the far left is a cut-out of my friend in her Hobbit costume. On to the right are two silk roses, a duck, then a tree. Further to the right is me in my Hobbit costume (dress made by the young lady who did the project and cloak made by our own Raefindel), holding my Sting. Behind me is my "beast puppy". At first she seemed iffy about adding him, then I said, "Hey, Farmer Maggot had dogs..." (imagines my puppy and Fang and Grip, the latter two off in a corner whispering: "*snicker* HoneyBear, what a wimpy name...*snicker*")
