Unsure how to do something in this new forum software? Ask the question here and we'll see if we can figure it out for you!

So everything will remain the same... it's just the layout that's changed, right?
Ack! My post count is messed up! A lot! What happened?!?!?!
The Barrow-Wight
02-09-2004, 10:01 PM
Actually, a lot is different. I only just noticed the post count difference when you pointed it out. That is unexpected. Mine is also a lot lower than before. You may have noticed that MOVIES is empty. Perhaps our post totals are missing posts in that forum? If so, it's nothing to be concerned about. The BOOKS rule!

Whoa, this is different, kind of shocking, but I finally made it in...
I just have one question...
Are the member titles going to change? Because after being at the other site, "Senior Member" just seems so generic ;)

So does this mean that we have to build up the Movies forum completely from scratch. I am not complaining or anything, but this is going to be a whole lot of work if we do.
By the way I have lost ALL of my PM's that I had. Help!! My posting count has gone down by a lot also.
At least (after a lot of difficulty) I have made it on. This is going to take a lot of getting used to!! One random question, WHy did you change?? I kind of liked the other one better.
EDIT: By the way, How do you log out, or do you need to log out? I have also noticed that is it around 4:00 AM what time are we going by?
The Barrow-Wight

1) Titles will be adjusted soon.
2) Honestly, we haven't decided what to do with MOVIES yet. Stand by.

All the old threads are going to be moved in, right? We're not going to lose a whole lot of excellent, edifying, enlighting, and not-so discussions, are we? I would assume not, since everything was moved over from the old EZBoard forum, wasn't it? But why the change, if I may ask? Is this program faster and more efficient?
EDIT: Yes, I'm missing about a 150+ posts, too, but it's nice to know that I've spent much more time in Books and Novices.....
Oh yes, one more thing: avatars. Are we going to have to re-enter them in our profiles? Because yours is the only one showing up, BW.
Sorry to keep bugging you, but I also seem to have received 2 of Balin999's PMs. I assume that things are just being switched around in the move.

After a long absence can I ask why the change in software? I ask because I have recently dropped info pop myself. looks like I am missing 400+ posts but that’s ok I can start fresh :)

I hate to be a real pain...but I have ten PMs in my profile: eight are from deleted users and two are from a member called Gorsereg. Should I just delete them or would they be gone for good if I did that? Also, does the ten PMs for profiles still apply?
Again, apologies for my extreme computer illiteracy...
Cheers!

Edit: Hmm...I'm missing 98 posts... :p

B-W,
I was roaming around in my profile and it looks as if there are a lot of interesting options that we never had before. However, it will take a while to get used to things.
I did have one comment. I am personally not concerned about the number of posts, but I don't think the missing ones are all from the movies thread. I had about a fourth of my total posts missing, and I rarely post in movies. So perhaps there is something else that did not transfer over in the numbers.

I set my profile clock to Central time since I live in Texas. However, the time that now shows on the board is 10:45 pm. The actual time in Texas is 11:45 pm. Is there a reason for this discrepency?
Gorwingel
02-09-2004, 11:56 PM
Well I think I figured out the reason why everyone lost their avatar... The avatar setting is currently set at 64 by 64 pixels. Which if anyone wants to check on Google (where I find my avatars) is very, extremely tiny. I got a new one as you can see, but this was one of the few I could find.
Mr. B-W, do you think you are going to keep it at that setting, or are you going to increase the maximum size?
the phantom
02-09-2004, 11:58 PM
So perhaps there is something else that did not transfer over in the numbers.
Perhaps the missing posts are in threads that were closed (such as the threads in Haudh-en-Ndengin and Elvenhome)?
Overall I'd say the transfer was pretty painless. I lost a couple of posts I did today so I just copied them from the old forum and pasted them here.

Phantom,
That would make a lot of sense. I lost over a thousand posts, and many of my posts would have been in Haudh-en-Ndengin and Elvenhome.
B-W -- Would that explain the difference in numbers?
I have also lost my private messages, although I will simply save any important content (like game proposals) on word.

I just noticed something. When I clicked below my post to see my profile I noticed that forename and surname were listed in the profile but when I went to edit my profile it didn't give me the option of entering forename or surname.

So the posts that were lost - will they ever be recovered? Oh and there are a few posts missing from Quotable Quotes and Quiz Room made on Feb 9.
On the good side, this new software is much faster, the page loads up pretty quickly, which is really something for the ones with poor net connection like me. Before, I had to wait ages for a long page to load.
On the down side, I don't like the icon for smile:-->:) it's weird you don't quite see the smile...
well I'll just go wander around our new resting place...:D

Sorry, but I just noticed something else. Every time I click on the "Currently Active Users" at the bottom of the main page it tells me that every single user online is viewing the "Main Index" (the main page for the forum).
I suppose it is possible that everyone just happenned to be on the main page every time I looked, but it is very unlikely.
Evisse the Blue
02-10-2004, 12:40 AM
Maybe because everyone was checking out the profile, calendar, and other facilities (at least that's what I was doing), and were not on a specific forum.
Child of the 7th Age
02-10-2004, 01:42 AM
Evisse,
I'm not sure that's the case. I've seen a number of posts go up in individual forums, but the users online continues to say "main index".

Hi, y'all!
I don't know if this is a nit-picky complaint or not, but I thought I'd add it to the list anyway. I set my clock option in my profile to show me Central US time zone time while I browse here, but the current time that shows is consistently one hour earlier than the actual time here in the Central Time Zone. I don't know if this means anything... (except it is later than you think!) ;)

You must be on the top nevertheless :) come to think of it, (and come to count it), I too miss some (though not so much as thou) - 478
HerenIstarion
02-10-2004, 07:23 AM
And, BTW, I haven't posted 478 times in The Movies, sure. I think no more than 20-30 posts for me there
That messing up must have something to do with what was originally posted on the EzBoard (though, again, I remember having some 1600 when we moved on to UBB)
On the other hand, maybe posts moved to Haudh-en-Ndengin archives does not count?
Ok, whatever, it does not matter much anyway :)
and it was just guessing of course
As for questions:
1 what about forename? (after The Phantom above)
2 what is message length? I mean not much recently, but I still sometimes post 4-5 A4 paper length messages
would they be clipped?
Otherwise, I like this new board more (a lot of new features) - and, main thing - I can post from my office! (the posting on the old one was blocked by firewall)

Oh geesh...I'm shocked! I came onto the forum and thought I had died...

All my PMs have disappeared as well.. And they were all valuable!! I've also lost more than 100 posts! Why is this happening? Why? Why? Why? (Yes, I am hysterical!)

Why did we change software?
Speed - VBulletin is a lot faster, especially when searching.
Security – UBB was vulnerable to hacks, and we were in fact once seriously hacked.
Private Messaging – The vBulletin PM system is really fun. Try it out!
Upgrade – Our version of UBB was non-upgradeable. With vBulletin we can continue to have the best version of the program available. Actually, there is a big update coming soon that will probably correct all of our problems!
What’s New?
Spell check
Problems
My Post Count is Wrong! When we moved your account over to vBulletin, it recounted your posts. It did not count (1) Posts in the Movies (2) Posts in Closed Topics (3) Posts in deleted topics. Since we have no idea how many posts were not counted for each of you, there is no way to restore the old number to your account. Since post counts aren’t as important as the discussions you type, I’m sure most of you won’t mind the loss, anyhow.
View New Posts This feature is acting very strangely because it is still listing the old posts that we had postdated in order to keep them at the top of a forum. We will be working to fix this soon.
Currently Active Users This feature incorrectly shows everyone as being on the MAIN PAGE. We are researching this.
Personal Titles We are working to restore PTs, as soon as we figure out how :)
MOVIES – The Movies forum is empty. This was at first not intentional, but we came to see the absence of The Movie topics as a blessing in disguise. Now that the movies are all release, we can start over and begin a even more organized discussion of them.
Things look funny There are a lot of small images that I still need to change so they fit more in our color scheme. Though the layout of the forum is now slightly different than before, you’ll get used to it soon.
Avatar Size Avatars have always been limited to 64x64, so nothing has changed.
The clock is wrong Adjust it in your Profile until it is accurate.
Posts from 9 Feb 04 are missing! We warned you. :)

I really like the new forum, first I panicked, because I was so used to the old one, and I'm not comfortable with changes computerwise, but now I've checked it out, it really is a big improvement. The pages load much faster then they used to.
Just a little remark though: I seem to have a lot of "chinese" figures anywhere in the posts, apparently when accents are used. Is there a way to fix that?

No problems here so far. Sad about the movies forum, but change is good. Though here's a question: When I was looking at my profile and the like, it kept trying to take me to the lost password page when I would change something and save it. Just one of those first time using software bugs.... ;)
The Barrow-Wight

The UBB version of the forum will not be up forever. If you have PMs there that you want to keep, I recommend printing them out, because if they didn't make it over here, they never will.
The VEW NEW POSTS has been fixed (somewhat) and is working much better now. As soon as we get rid of the post-dating on the first 10 posts there, it will be 100% like before.

Congratulations, BW. This format moves much faster for me and the member search function is much easier to use--a defiite improvement for an RPG mod. All your hard work is much appreciated.
One limitation: the size of PMs appears to be limited. Is this a firm limit or can it be changed?
If it is firm, it will likely cause a change in some practices on the gaming fora. Pio, Child and I have used PMs for game proposals and also for help with editting to game and Inn posts. We can use emails, but this takes longer and is less convenient.
Can the size limitation on each PM be removed or could the size allowed be increased?

The latest posts on all topics will not show up until they have been posted on with this new software. The old threads and posts have been transferred, but the forum does not read them for latest posts not made through its own software. You'll note that the most recent of posts do show up like that - the top few topics of each forum.
The old forum can be found (for a limited time, I'd say), here (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi) .

It was quite a shock when I came on the site and saw the changes, but everything seems to be okay with it. Apart from I have about 40 missing posts. Thats probably the Movie forum going though. It seems alot faster to.
One question about the name titles. Will you be keeping the old ones, like Ghost prince of Cardolan, or will you be making up mre ones?

Four questions:
1. Do we still have a limit of 10 on private messages? I am assuming there is a limit, since one of my pms sent to a moderator was thrown back to me saying that the mailbox was full.
2. If there is a limit, how is it configured? Are all pms --inbox, files, and sent-- added together so this number must come under the limit of 10?
3. I have received two inquiries from posters who have pms in their mailboxes that belong to someone else. Am I correct in telling them simply to delete these?
4. B-W, spell check would be very welcome. I was not able to find that yet. How do you access it? It is probably staring me in the face!

I like all of the new options in the User CP. Super cool stuff. One thing though... Is there some way we can size down a picture so that it can be 64x64 pixels and be the avatar? Oh yeah I lost 235 posts in the switch. What happened to the member's ratings with the little bones? On that note, I like the Idea of thread ratings, but they don't seem to be showing up. Is there some way you could get the Who's Online to be in Last Click order rather than alphabetical? Hmmm I really like the posts per day in the people's profile... interesting info.

Something really weird is happening to my account.
I'm Maédhros of the Rev Sil Project. With this new change of software to vbulletin I have been unable to log on.
The email address that I had on my profile was outdated and when I tried changing it, I received a new password, unfortunately it doesn't work either.
Today, when I tried to log on with my username of Maédhros, the board told me that I was registered as troll's bane.
Hoping that either Mr Underhill or the Barrow-Wight can help me in this.

Okay, I'm Alaklondewen, and I did the same thing as Maedhros. I followed the link for the password and now I'm Trolls' Bane too and I can't log out.
Dooood. This is neat, but I miss my personal title. And the pretty rings next to the thread listings. But I really only care about getting my title back. The rings are just a way of distracting you from how selfish I am.
Neat new look, otherwise.

Gah, my post count has been halved! Ah well, I suppose it's a fair price to pay for the amazingly increased speed or the forum....
vBulletin only counts the posts made that have stayed on the forum. UBB counted posts on deleted threads even after they were deleted. This, along with the absent Movie forum threads, accounts for the majority of post number loss. Seems fitting to remind everyone that post count is not important (as a false emphasis seems to be placed on it). The important thing here is to participate in fun, intelligent discussion.
This is neat, but I miss my personal title.
I imagine Lush made this post before her personal title was restored, but anyway, the missing personal titles last night and this morning should be reset today (if not, in the next few days). vBulletin, like UBB, can automatically assign the generic titles based on post count, but personal titles (as always) have to be typed in manually - every single one of them, one by one.
alaklondewen - did you use your publicly displayed name, or your old login name from the other software?
Everyone needs to login in with their publicly displayed name. The login name you used to login to the other software is now useless - the publicly displayed name and login name for the new setup are one and the same.

I disagree with this but, hey I guess my opinion probably doesn't matter. I think it is unfair to just dump everything that was on that forum...
And I know I shouldn't be, but I am upset about the loss of about 70 of my posts... though this new site is admittedly a lot better I think restoring the movies forum is only fair... maybe the administration didn't like all of the topics and discussions there but that doesn't make them less important.
The Barrow-Wight
02-10-2004, 06:56 PM
Because The Barrow-Downs is a site and forum dedicated to the books of J.R.R. Tolkien, topics about the movies are less important, but they are not unimportant. That's why we have kept THE MOVIES forum and will encourage people to enjoy talking about the films.
A reminder: 500 posts does not equal a Personal Title. It is an approximate minimum that we look at, but those posts are supposed to be good discussions posts. On occasion, we have even given Personal Titles to people with less than 500 posts, but only to those who contributed greatly to the topics here. Overall, the Personal Titles, though neat to have, are much less important than the actual discussion we have here. Talk Tolkien, contribute intelligently, and your post counts will not only be high in quantity, but also in quality.

Well here goes my first post on the brand new look for our beloved Barrowdowns! *squee* :D
Overall, I think the changes are pretty cool. The new options are nice. I've probably lost quite a few posts to Movies forum but that's fine because I figure it makes up for all the annoying nonsense posts that I made when I was a newbie. ;)
My avatar doesn't work, though:
Avatar Size Avatars have always been limited to 64x64, so nothing has changed.
But my avatar worked on the UBB site but now it tells me the same exact one is too big.
The only other nitpicky little bother I have is that it tells who posted last in each forum, but not the actual post that was last posted on. That's easy to get used to, though. On the whole, three cheers for BW and all the mods!

That is fair, and understandable, but I still think that the movies forum should be restored, not simply to help my post count but because I believe that even though the movies are not as important as the books, the movies forum is important to some people, especially myself. The books forum is very intimidating, but the movies forum is exactly the opposite, and even though it isn't being taken away, I feel that it is unfair to simply clear out a whole forum just because it wasn't necessarily filled with loads of stimulating posts and was more full of general discussion that anyone on this forum could participate in. There was plenty of meaningful discussion in all those topics that are now gone, even though they weren't simply literature based. I don't think it is right to just delete all those threads, cleaning them out I could understand, but wiping the slate completely clean seems ridiculous to me.

UBB automatically resized the image to 64 x 64 no matter what it's original dimensions were. vBulletin (apparently) requires the image to be 64 x 64 originally - it does no resizing, in other words. You can do this with most any graphics program. You'll need to resize and reupload it to the webspace you're using. If you need help resizing, I can do that.

Finding out after two days of moving the forum that THE BOOKS did not make it is devastating (this did not happen... phew).
Finding out after two days of moving the forum that THE MOVIES accidently did not make it is regrettable (this did happen :().
Going back and doing it all again just to get THE MOVIES back would be ridiculous  (and would cause me to go blind  ).
Really, since those Movie topics were so good the first time, I'm sure they'll be just as great the second time around.

Well, over all I think this new change will work out nicely. I regret the loss of the movies section as we had it on UBB, but that will be mended over time, I suppose. Although, when I first got to the forum I was somehow 'stuck' in the account of 'Pallando the Blue' until I logged out and logged back in under my rightful screen name...was that supposed to happen?
The Barrow-Wight
02-10-2004, 08:34 PM
No, that wasn't supposed to happen. We've had a few weird events like that, but as long as it ends up good, I guess we'll survive :)

I must say that, after a few times around of clicking everywhere but the right links and being slightly intimidated by ALL the choices and differences, I am now quite enjoying this place! Thanks for fixing the clock, too! ;) Personally, I'm a bit relieved to have a clean slate for the movies. It means a different inherent structure and less messy wading through all the "what will you do when this film comes out" posts or speculations, although speculations can be fun to read, especially in retrospect. I would HATE to have lost the Books forum, though! There are endless layers of treasure there, many still waiting to be mined by each new delver in the deep (to borrow a PT phrase from doug*platypus)! I really appreciate all the effort y'all have put into this place!
Cheers and thanks!
Lyta
P.S. I noticed a lot of people are having trouble getting their avatars to a small enough size. I make or modify my own avatars using Photoshop and post them on my site and it did take me several tries with old "smoking Frodo" to get him just right. If you need me to resize a photo and send it back to you for use on your profile, I can. (I can't promise it fast in all cases, though! My hours are odd and even if I show up as logged on, sometimes I am miles away!) But I'm here now! :D

I agree with BW that the loss of the movie section was regrettable but it is also a blessing. Now we can go back and repost meaningful movie discussions leaving the rubbish behind. If you had a movie topic that was important to you why not just copy it yourself into the new forum.
:)
Post count and PT are not really relevant to Tolkien discussions it is just a fun item that we have all gotten used to. Thanks Barrow team for all the good work, I love the new software.

Woha.....well, I have to admit that it'll take some time to get used to this. :D
Anyway, I see that there is a lot of discussion about the lost Movie's section. May I utter an opinion? I really think it's ad that it's gone. BW said that we could start all over again, and the movies section wasn't that important since this was originally a place to discuss the books. Even though I'm not very active at that section, I think that the movies section is a great loss. . I read a lot of discussions there. I also think it's sad it's gone because of the people who have committed loads of time to the section and just see it....disappear...
Okay, enough about that.
Why can't we restore the post amount? I mean, the old forum have all the numbers there......But it takes a lot of time, doesn't it? Well, the members have used loads of time writing those posts.....
Ehm...I'll stop now.
I like it though..:P There are some pretty awesome things I can do that I couldn't do before...:D

Just a comment about the time and date attached to the posts. It used to be conveniently placed above the post, and now is off in the lower right of the it. This is rather unfortunate when printing out RPG posts, as it was a good way to keep them in order. Is this a fixed position? It would be so nice to have it inline with the body of the post. I expect that it can not be changed though.

Adding avatars is fairly easy.
1) Go to your USER CP

4) enter the URL of your avatar
You can store as many as 10 for your account.

This new improved version is growing on me...I really stopped here to ask about pms, but most of my questions have been answered. I do have one question - not being entirely positive when the Downs underwent this makeover, I got a pm two days ago, which I found out about in my e-mail. When I go into my profile now, it's gone. Was it sent before the forum had these changes, or is there an actual problem with it?
*crosses fingers* Please don't let my post count be too dire...

Welcome to the new frontier, Theron! It took me a little while to find where to insert the avatar as well. When you click on the user cp button (or choose the User Control Panel in the drop down menu), you then have another menu of sorts near the top of the page. You click on the Edit Options button and then the Avatar functions are way down at the very bottom, underneath the time offset from GMT option. The avatar limit is very strict at max 64 by 64 pixels. If you've got an avatar that is 65 by 63, forget it! It won't go! Other than that, it is really great! I am really enjoying the added functionalities of this new system!
Cheers!
Lyta
Edit: I just realized that you might be referring to the actual physical location of the avatar for upload...I haven't tried that, but I assume it is like attaching a file to an email...forgive me; my brain is still boiled from walking to Lothlorien and despairing of ever getting there!

You can store as many as 10 for your account. And that did the trick. However...
HARRUMPH! I thought the 64x64 pixel limit was the same as on the old board. However, my avatar on the source URL on the old board appears to be 66x66?! So now I have to trim it down, and find the email address of my fellow B-Der that is kindly hosting my avatar for me, and get it reloaded to that site.
See image attached:
Harrumph, again! I tried the "Attach file" function on the Post Reply screen. It allows me to browse my hard drive for an image and specify it there, which I did. (A copy of my 66x66 avatar .jpg that is only 3.69k.) But in Preview Reply mode, I don't see the image, and I suspect I will not when I submit, either.
It must fool me into thinking it will upload it from my hard drive but there is some restriction on that in the forum software, though the "Attach file" option is not disabled. Harrumph, harrumph!
Let me try the IMG insert button to go for the URL: http://www.porcusfidus.com/gandalf.jpg Well, if that don't beat all! as my Gaffer used to say.
Hm. Oh well, on the bright side, maybe this is the worst thing that will happen to me this week. :D
- - - - -
Edit by Theron:
When I submitted, that's when I see the "Attachment" as a link to the image. So it DID attach when I submitted, and uploaded to the forum somewhere. It just doesn't show the picture directly in the post, and the attachment link is not shown in preview reply mode. Okay, I will remove at least one Harrumph, harrumph!

2nd Edit by Theron:
Thanks to Miss Underhill, I know have my resized avatar rehosted and reloaded.
I also like the new BB's ability to load both images and avatars, though I doubt I will change my avvy often.

But what if I have the avatar only on my computer and not on the net? Because in the beginning I had the option of downloading avatars from my hard drive (in this forum, not the old one) and now that option appears to be mysteriously gone! Is it really gone?
Lyta_Underhill
02-13-2004, 10:08 AM
I went looking for the upload option this morning and I didn't find it either, but also it says I have 0 avatars (listing 1-0 of 0 in my list). I'm not sure what that's about, because I do see my self-hosted one. Perhaps it was a hallucination, because I certainly remember the upload option! ;)
Anyway, I actually came over here to mention something nitpicky indeed: at the bottom of every forum page is a link back to the main BD site. On every one of them so far, including this reply page, the link doesn't work, because there is one too many slashes in the URL: http:///www.barrowdowns.com .

Why do the thread ratings only work for some threads? I see ratings on some such as "Those Little, Unimportant, and Unknown parts that we love..." in the Books and "Battles" in the Quiz Room, but not in any others. And I know that I at least have rated a few other threads and it doesn't show.. What's up?
*EDIT*: Hang on, I may have answered my own question. I think the ratings have to have at least two votes for it to show and just not many people have voted.

Wow! I go away for a few days, and when I come back everything has changed!
Personally, I like the new format though. It still seems familiar and yet there seem to be a good few new features. So it gets a "thumbs up" from me.
I haven't noticed it being any quicker, but then again I haven't used the search function yet. If that's quicker, it will be a major bonus.
Had to go and re-size my avatar myself, but it seems to have done it the world of good.
One point does occur to me, though, and it's been mentioned before I think. I only worked out that I had to log on using my screen name from reading this thread. Seems to me that it would be worthwhile to point this up to people when first logging on, or on the home screen, since people might otherwise have difficulties logging onto the new site.
Other than that, I think that it's great. I'm looking forward to discovering all the new features.:)

OK, its all cool and interesting and new and I got used to the fluctuations in functionality that are inherent in the settling into a new system, but then I go to my Active Threads link and up comes the list of current Topics and I see some threads on a forum I've never seen before called "Da Books"! And its got a couple of threads and several replies and all, and it makes me think that there is this parallel universe with secret thoughts and conspiracies going on, or perhaps it is a hallucination I can click on! So I click, and I am not allowed to venture there...that's all well and good too, as I figure I don't need to read about "The Bell Jar" after all and it is too late for me to be doing this anyway...the gist of the question I suppose is, "What Up wit' Da Books?"

I'm a guest too. In the movies forum I am "Marco", which was my login name before. Just a theory: is it because on this software you log in with your regular name and not something separate?
Something else I just noticed: at the bottom of the "Add Reply" page it shows all the posts and after that it says something like "This thread has more than 40 posts. Click here to see the rest" or something like that. But the link doesn't work - I can't see the rest.

I can't find it on any of the others. This new forum is much faster. I have a fairly slow internet connection, and sometimes it could take three minutes for a thread to load. I like most of the stuff on this new forum except for the fact that I lost about 1/4 my posts, but that can be remedied in time - it was only around 50 or so anyway.

I'm surprised that some of you didn't consider the possibility that the absence of the old Movies posts might affect your counts. After all, if a post isn't on the system then it can't be counted.
The new smiley is obviously a man in a red hat and sunglasses smoking a cigarette. I'm tentatively assuming that it's Dirk Gently, although it would appear from its hover tag that it's me. So either the new smiley represents a belief in the completely holistic approach to private investigation or extreme coolness. Take your pick.

Is there a reason I get this notice whenever I try to rate a thread? I have tried in several different forums.
The action you have attempted could not be performed as your session appears to be invalid. Click the below link to attempt this action again with a new session.
Am I doing something wrong? When I click the link, I get the same notice.

Sorry about that BW, this posts on topic this time. I swear! :)
After I post and I'm being sent back to the thread, a link comes up that says:
Click here if you do not want to wait any longer (or if your browser does not automatically forward you)
I have clicked on this a few times, because my computer can be very slow, but nothing really happens. What is this button supposed to do?

I've not experienced problems rating a thread (though this is actually the only thread I only rate - just now to test it). Anyone else had errors while rating threads?
I assum the link 'if you don't want to wait' is supposed to get you back on topic faster, but I don't notice that it does anything special either. Sorry. I guess we'll just have to wait.:)

I have been struggling to get back home ever since the change, but have been feeling like the Flying Dutchman (only I'm a girl). Anyway--this is a test. I have to see if I've actually figured out how to do this or not. I've emailed the webmaster, admin, BW, you name it--I've emailed it. I've had to figure it out on my own, and I now have to see if the elliptical, eternal recurring, Groundhog Day type madness is over or . . . [shudders] not.
Thank you for your patience.

Okay. I see myself. This is good. If I see myself again tomorrow, that's even better. It will mean that I got in.
I now see what people are talking about when they say their posts are missing. I see that I'm down from something like 60 to the one I just posted above. Most of them were in Books, too.
That's okay. If I can still get back home tomorrow night, it will be okay. But I'm gonna haunt someone real hard if I gotta slog my canoe through cyber jungles again.
The underlying message here is, it is good feedback to know that people care this much about their place of rest!
And, Alkanoon (sp?)--thanks for the smilies! I don't know how to work them to get them on here, but they were fun to look at!
D'oh! I know why it shows only 1 post so far from me and that I joined this month--it's because I had to register under a slightly different name! Now I remember the question I emailed before tonight--how do I get my old name and original register/join date back? That is something I care about . . .

I have noticed that sometimes if I am away long enough, long enough for the screensaver to come on, that it logs me out for no good reason. I'm not sure why, but I will come back from answering the phone or something and realize that I am no longer logged in when I was actively posting and everything just ten minutes before. Is this something that is supposed to happen or is it just me? Also sometimes I go to post and write my reply and then hit "submit" and it says I didn't select a forum. Sometimes I can hit the "back" button and my post is still there, so I can put it in a Microsoft Word document and go back into the thread and just copy/paste, but other times my reply is gone. I know that isn't supposed to happen. Has anyone else been having these problems?

Go to your USER CP and EDIT OPTIONS and make sure the two 'cookies' options are set as yes. This might get rid of your problems.

I pressed the search function button at the top of the forum. I filled in a simple word and also filled in my user name in the search by user, and selected the forum I wanted to search. It could not find anything, even though I was looking at a thread where I had posted and I included the cut and paste of the word.
I thought maybe it doesn't search by my publicly displayed name but by my login name. So I made all the search parameters the same except that. No success.
So I did a search for that single word without a Search by User specified. (As if, maybe it is an either/or search.) Again no success.
Edit: I tried this specific search again (keyword* without user name) and it does find some threads, so perhaps I made a mistake on this one.
Likewise, I used keywords like "word AND otherword" (as it states for Advanced Search options) in every combination with both user names--still to no avail. Is it just me?

Except for me it has nothing to do with my computer screensaver coming on, I don't have that enabled. I will usually be replying, and if I sit on the Post Reply screen for maybe 5 minutes it will time out. So when I post (hit submit) it says I am not currently logged in. (I said 5 minutes but I don't know, it could be longer, I am not sure what the magic number is.)
Also, here is a little different symptom than Firefoot. I can always get back to the Post Reply screen and I copy the text. Then go log in again, find the right thread, select Add Reply, and paste the saved text...AND SUBMIT BEFORE IT TIMES OUT AGAIN!
For debugging purposes, here is my Edit Options cookies section (with selected options bolded):

Login, Cookies & Privacy
Invisible Mode?
Selecting yes allows you to surf the forums without appearing in the 'Logged In Users' list. yes no
Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies) yes no
-- I selected 'no' on this, because I may share this computer with others and I want them to have their own logon if they want to use this forum. I do not mind logging in manually every time. That works the same as the old bulletin board.
Browse board with cookies?
Clicking yes will use cookies to keep your id for this session. Clicking no will send it through the links. (Selecting no may cause problems when sharing links with people behind the same proxy as you) yes no
--I would think this would use the cookies to keep my id for this session, so I would remain logged in until I manually log out. That is how I used to use the old bulletin board, though I think there was no option for automatic login.
HAHAHA! I just hit Preview Reply on this, and it had timed out. It was probably more than 5 minutes. But I was able to foil the "Timeout Forcing Log Out" goblin and recapture the text and paste here and I will submit hopefully, and....*whew!*
Oh, as further debugging information, here is the timeout message I get:

I have decided, after careful deliberation of about 4 seconds, that I am going to have a tantrum due to unrelieved frustration.
HowhowhowhowhowhowhowhowhowHOW do I get my original name back and my posts? I'm not newly deceased! I've been dead for over a year now and darned proud of it!
BW--someone, anyone, tell me if it is possible, and, if so, how to get my name and posts back.
And, [smiles sheepishly and circles toe on floor] I am so very glad to have gotten right in tonight! I saw my name (even though it's not my real one) and everything!
And when I get an answer to my question I will immediately hie my fanny to the time-out corner for tantrumming dead folk.
Thank you in advance!:D

Searching – The search index does not log common words (such as “a”, “and”, “the”, etc.) for obvious reasons. Try a less common search word. Also note that the “Search By User Name” has two option buttons: “Match exact name” and “Match partial name”. I have used the AND, OR, and NOT operators successfully, so they’re definitely working if used properly.
Session problems – Try setting the “Automatically login...” setting to “yes” anyway and manually logging out when you’re done. If that doesn’t work, I’d guess that it has something to do with your browser and its security/privacy settings. I have not experienced this problem. Are you using an offbeat browser of some sort?

I set both the cookies options to yes and....It worked! I just tested it and after almost a half an hour I am still logged in. It isn't automatically logging me in like it says it should, but I don't mind because I probably prefer manually logging in. It's working like I want it to work. I don't think it would have been my browser anyway - I'm using Internet Explorer on an almost new computer.

First, I just wanted to enjoy reaffirming that I'm here, back in my barrow again! (I know I'm home because I can't see my hand in front of my face ;) )
Second, would someone kindly restate--as if they were speaking to a 7 year-old--the logging in/logging out auto & manual that was mentioned on the last page or this one? What is the relationship among those options--what're the causes & effects?
I had a bit of trouble getting in tonight--it didn't auto-log me in, so I had to go back to my email notiication of reactivation, clicked on the link, was brought back to BD where I saw "You've been reativated already, try logging in." I couldn't find a "log in" button, but I saw where I could re-enter my username and password. Apparently that's the login thingy. (Ah, the many "aka's" of computer jargon! )
At any rate, I'd enabled auto-login, so that's why I was confused. I can't recall if I logged out manually last night or not.
Third, I am just very glad to be here! :D (Thanks, BW!)

Clicking yes will use cookies to keep your id for this session. Clicking no will send it through the links. (Selecting no may cause problems when sharing links with people behind the same proxy as you) yes no
To manually log yourself out:
1. On any B-D page, at the top right, press Home button.
2. At the bottom of the Home page, press the Log Out button to manually log yourself out.
The way to log in when you come back is, at the bottom of the Home page, enter your publicly displayed name and password.
Dininziliel, perhaps your real problem is that you need to follow any of the several links to the old forum posted earlier in this thread. Login and go to your user configuration there ("my profile", then View/Update profile) and see that you have a Login name and a publicly displayed (PD) name. The Login name was the name you used to have to use when you logged in, then gave a password. The PD name is the name that showed up beside your posts.
In the NEW forum, you no longer use the Login name. At the bottom of the Home page, where it says, "Login with username and password" enter your publicly displayed name (the old name you posted under under the old forum) and password (the password you used to login with under the old forum).
Maybe this information will be enough to get you back to your old, dead self! With your old, dead post count....

The auto login used to work for me on both of my computers. Then, one evening, I got pulled away from the computer while I was still logged in to the BD. My notebook shut itself off. To preface: I have a sneaking suspicion that the answer to my question is on this thread, somehow, but I have read every post and it just ended up confusing me more. So I will cite general denseness over carelessness.
The automatic login option: does this mean that I have to log out when I leave to remove my name from the list of users online? It seems that earlier after the transition there was no log out, but that was okay, so now that there is a log out, do I need to use it? With the old forum you had to log out before exiting or you'd be listed as online. The only reason I ask about this, is I usually visit the Downs and read threads as a guest but only login if I have something to post. Basically I'm wondering the automatic login only works if you have manually logged out, or if it automatically logs out now as well.
One other thing: I noticed some earlier questions about forenames and surnames in the profile: B-W answered that we should just use our nicknames on the board like we always have, and put personal information in the profile. But that's just it: you can't fill out those boxes in the profile. On the personal standpoint, I don't even care about my own name being up there, but there's just something very odd about having options up there which aren't actually options. (Eh, just delete the fields, I say, or you'll keep getting questioned about it with every new member. Yes, haha, delete them I say! Frrrry their hides.... :p)

I don't know if there is a (database imposed) limit on post size, but since we are playing RPG games rather than writing Fan Fiction, I think there is an unofficial, practical limit to the amount of text that should be in a post. Since each post is presumably one characters telling their part of a tale, chapter length expositions would seem inappropriate. With that in mind, hopefully we won't see people finding out if there is a size limit, at least not in RPG (and NEVER in Mirth! ;)).

Ealasaide, can you describe exactly how your autologin is not working? There has been a bit of general confusion over how this feature works. If you logout of a session, autologin will not automatically log you back in. Autologin will only re-login later if you end your session (i.e., close your browser or navigate away to another page) without logging out.
If this is how you expect it to work and you're still having your problem, I don't have a whole lot of ideas, other than perhaps using your browser options to delete all your cookies and starting fresh. You should be aware before trying this, though, that any other autologins you have saved for other sites may be deleted. Try this solution at your own risk.
If that doesn't work, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas. Are you using some kind of funky browser? Do you have your security settings set unusually high? Is anyone else having this problem? H-I, are you still having trouble? Do both of you also have the "Browse board with cookies" option set to yes?
Hildigard/Alatáriël, assuming your treklynn address is still good, I've had the system send your login and password info to you. In case you missed it in this thread, remember that you have to login using your exact screen name, "Alatáriël", matching case, accent marks and all, when you login.

Thanks, Mister Underhill. I can accept that. You're probably going to think I was mistaken, but before I had the computer turn itself off, I actually did logout and have it auto log me back in on my next visit. I know this because I logged out about five times in a row once because I thought the log out wasn't working. (That was before I knew about the auto login feature.)
I'd log myself out then go to check one more forum and find myself logged back in again, so I'd log out again, go away, and when I came back, there I was.... anyway, you get the point.
I guess it's not supposed to work that way, then, eh? Okay! I won't bother you about it anymore. Thanks!

Mister Underhill: I received the email, clicked on the link, got the message that my password had been resent & new password emailed to me. The new email was received, I clicked on that link to change the password. I type my name exactly as originally entered (i.e. Alatáriël) and keyed the temporary password provided. Guess what? "WRONG PASSWORD"!! Why is this not working? I just want my real identity back. I'm feeling really stressing out. Can someone reset me internally through the site, as the auto reset is definitely NOT working? Help!!

Okay, I think I have figured out the problem. There are several users with variations of the display name Alatáriël (Alatariel, Alàtariel, maybe more...). Apparently, vBulletin has trouble distinguishing these as different names. At least one of these is recently active.
All I can suggest is that you choose a slightly different (or completely different) screen name. I will make the adjustment for you. You will have all your old post counts, etc.
Please post here or PM me with an adjusted screen name and I'll take care of it.

I have to see if I'm able to post, and if so , under what name my post is... And what my status is.
Edit: So, the name is correct, but all of my posts are gone.

We have two accounts that might be yours:
1) lothiriel (90 posts)
2) Lothiriel Silmarien (890 posts)
If one of these is the one you are looking for, type in the nick exactly as it shows on the screen (and as it used to show on each of youtr old forum posts) when logging in.

Well! Whenever I'm away for a bit something seems to change here. It's a different look, to be sure. It'll take some getting used to but I'm just gratified to know my account is still active. :D

Inziladun, it is always a pleasure to see you back. After all, along with always providing good Middle-earth discussion, you were also one of the contributors that allowed us to change to the UBB software. It took us a few years, but we finally outgrew it and had to get even bigger.
Good to see you!

Long time no see, Inziladun! I'm dying to know if you managed to hold out on the LotR movies. Good to see you again.

BW: Thanks for the kind words! In the last few months I've moved and my wife and I have had a daughter! Spare time has been very rare but I'm hoping things will stabilize when she starts sleeping through the night, and I can check out the Downs daily as I used to.
Mister U: Well, at the prodding of my wife (who very much enjoyed them), I did finally see all the movies. If I were to give my analysis in detail, I'd probably be here tomorrow. There were some good things, and a great many things I had a problem with. I guess I'm glad I saw them, but I don't want to see any of them a second time.
It's good to 'see' you all again! :D

In the "change of venue" so to speak, I seem to have lost my avatar. I can't figure out how to put one back, as I can't find where to change my profile. Help?

Samwise, at the top of the page, click on "user cp", then go to "edit options", click on "change avatar" at the bottom of that page, and you have the page for your avatar URL.
