View Full Version : Making of the Lord of the Rings
I thought I'd give all you movie fans a heads up about a FOX special Thursday at 8 pm Eastern/7 pm Central on the Making of the Lord of the Rings. I know I'll be glued to the set.
-réd

Sounds like a set-to-tape-and-watch-after-12/19 scenario to me!
I continue to be amazed by your self restraint, Undérhill.
-réd

For me it will be a tape and watch at the same time. can't wait, it looks to be good. How do you do it Mr. Underhill? I guess while the rest of us are in the theater thinking, I seen that part in the trailers, and that part on TV, you'll be totally amazed by everything. That's pretty cool actually.

My sister and I are both with Underhill! We plan to tape and watch after seeing the movie. I'm afraid it may give too much away, or spoil the "magic" of the special effects.

This is off-topic, but I couldn't resist.
That's a beautiful pic, amyrlis! My copy of the Narnia Tales has that very illustration. I love it.
[ November 27, 2001: Message edited by: onewhitetree ]

Ah! Kindred spirits! Stay strong -- only 22 more days to go.
My tape machine is set and ready to roll for post-movie viewing.

I have no such self-restraint, though I admire it. My excuse is I'm selling a non-Tolkien friend on the movies (worse than not having read it, read the first chapter and was completely disinterested! Horrors!)
That's my story anyways and I'm sticking to it.
-Maril
[ November 27, 2001: Message edited by: Marileangorifurnimaluim ]

Thanks onewhitetree! I recently received a copy of the Chronicles for my birthday. I had one as a youngster, but my sis has it now. The set I just received doesn't have this particular artwork, I wish it did (I viewed these covers on Amazon and they look great) but it's cool none-the-less. I am going to start re-reading them as soon as the LOTR movie has come & gone (currently re-reading FotR for the ump-teenth time ). I figured that many other Tolkien-types are also into the Chronicles like me - glad to see that you are! It's been sooo long since I've read them and I'm excited to get started!

After seeing that special, i was a bit dissapointed.
Let me use simple terms.

That Balrog in Moria looked like *** .

Saw it. Master Underhill, I told you I had no restraint. But my friend who was just going to humor me is now sold. It was the thousands of handmade swords that did it. They're beautiful.
This teaser's geared to attract the people who've barely heard of the LOTR. And it works. There are interesting tidbits scattered about, but I think it will be annoying after the movie. Look for the real "Making of" when all three movies are out as a set on DVD. Now that will be interesting.

Surely they didn't actually show the Balrog!

I didn't see all of it, so I might have missed the Balrog. I saw the cave troll enter the Chamber of Mazarbul to be shot with an arrow though (I don't remember that occuring in the book...). Was the Balrog shown?

Okay, my husband messed up the VCR and it didn't get taped! So I guess I don't get to see it. But, my sister broke the pact and watched it herself - she wasn't that excited about it and even said that it was cheezy. She said if she wasn't such a devoted fan, she might not want to see the movie after seeing this 'making of' show!?! She's sending me the tape, but I'm still not going to watch it until after the movie.

No Balrog, that was the cave troll. The clip started after Pippin disturbed the denizens of Moria and ended midway through the battle of the Chamber of (insert jaw cracking dwarf language). Aren't you glad you didn't watch? It was a lot more intimidating than what I imagined, I think the action scenes are going to be great.
I use my non-Tolkienite friends as a guage. They saw it. They said: "this is going to be a good movie." I think Frodo and Sam are going to come across particularly well, the relationship between Sean Astin and Elijah Wood seems very sincere.
-Maril

That was waaaaaaaaay too big to be a troll.
I really hope it was though - but then what were the things that accompanied it?...I thought they were Trolls.
For goodness sakes that ugly mess of computer generated garbage should be cut out. Period.

Now, now, be gentle. From previous posts I guessed that Esil is one of our youngest members. If you don't remember the scene exactly, E., re-read the Fellowship. It's impossible to read the LOTR too many times.
-Maril
[ November 30, 2001: Message edited by: Marileangorifurnimaluim ]

Yes that was a Troll. The reviews from media persons who have see it described the Balrog and that was not it. besides there are pictures of the troll on several websites.

Yes. The Balrog appears on Durin's Bridge, no doors to bar, and Gandalf is the one who faces him. The cave troll is faced by the whole company, Boromir, Aragorn and Legolas lead the battle. I loaned my copy of the Fellowship to a coworker, but I think they faced the cave troll in the chamber where they found Balin's book.
-Maril
