Move over N'sync(question spelling) and Brittany Spears. Here come rotten Nazgul and an elf maiden that is thousands of years old.
I can see the articles in teenage girls magazines now. "If that special Nazgul in your life dosen't seem to notice you just put on an evil magic ring and he will sniff you out."(how attractive)Legolas and Arwen were voted this months hottest people by AOL.
Flashing on my screen now(yes right now) is a sign reading "Hobbit Hotties". This makes me sick. What do you think? Well gotta go root for my dream orc woman in the Miss Mordor Pagent!

That's a bit too close to the truth to be comfortable. Elijah Wood junkies everywhere. My cousin sent me a pic of the "Fab Foursome" in leather jackets smirking... ouch.

I also noticed the Hobbit Hotties thing on AOL and almost puked. It's ridiculous. It's a good thing Proffesor Tolkien isn't alive to see this.

OK, whatever, I LIKE LEGOLAS. A lot. You can say I like Orlano Bloom, but he is quite separate from his character (he's an English brat who smokes and bungee-jumps, and I'm not ready for a man like that to be in my life). But Legolas, in the movie, and in the books (as I am discovering), is extremely attractive. Roll your eyes at me all you want, call me immature, whack me with half a sword. If I met someone like that, I would brave all the slimy orcs in the world to accompany him on his journey, and fight Gimli to the death for his attention.

I wish people didn't turn everything into sexuality or that kind of love. there are other points to the stories. Personally, I like the guy who plays Legolas, because I like the actor already (he's a punk like me ) and he plays my favorite character: an elf. but i understand your frustration

QueenMag

It's pretty futile to rail against it ... Jackson didn't cast unattractive actors in these roles, and the very nature of their characters makes them appealing. In addition, some of these actors (e.g. Wood, Bean, Mortensen) have been around for a long while; they are not *just* Frodo, Boromir and Aragorn. They had fan bases before this film, and can be identified with other roles as well.
People's imaginations will be inspired, and it's nearly impossible to contain that - short of forbidding the cast from any sort of junkets or publicity. Still, I had a crush on Aragorn from the books - before I even heard of the film; it had nothing to do with photo shoots or AOL (do people still use AOL?).

I'd never invite a man like that "upstairs for a cup of coffee," but he would probably be interesting to meet.
It's interesting how the contrast between him and his character works out:
Bloom is a badass, but not in a physical sort of way, meaning I can't imagine him beating anyone up (has he?). Legolas is the kind of sweet and innocent guy...I mean elf, that you'd bring home to meet mommy; but when he smells orc and whips that bow out, he turns into a blond, baby-faced version of Commando. Fascinating!

It doesn't bother me that so many people in the movie were so good looking, what bothers me is the way the media plays it up with all this "hobbit hotties" and Teen magazine crap. Could a society be more obsessed with celebrities and people's physical appearances? I don't think there is anything wrong with people finding others attractive, it's just the obsession with looks and celebrity that bothers me. I can only imagine that if 'unnatractive'(as it's all subjective) people had been cast people would never stop talking about how "ugly" they are because humans have this natural tendency to judge on looks. I don't exclude myself from this. Yes, perhaps the hobbits were attractive, but IMO it didn't take away from their portyal of hobbits.

As much as we may all be repulsed by this crass "hobbit hotties" (wipe that puke of your keyboard whoever did it) We have to remember that such companies as AOL have to pander the non-Tolkienite and therefore ignorant public. Ergo, you must advertize your hobbits, elves, and dashing men as studs in photo shoots to drool over.
Footnote: Gimli has gotten no respect!! And when's that dwarf pagent on?

Elrian
12-29-2001, 04:11 AM
AOL actually pushed The Potter movie more than Rings anyway. Imagine Potter Hotties, it's too early in the morning to be laughing this hard I'll stick to the Elves myself and leave the Hobbit and Mirkwood Hotties to the teenagers.
Dwarven Hotties? Gimli the Hottie, hmmm ok. I suppose if someone on here could go for the Miss Orc Hotties, there could be any kind of Hottie. Now there's something PJ could add to the movie somewhere a Dwarf woman, then there would be no more wondering what one looks like.
"Ladies and Gentlemen: Elrond the Hottie has left the buildng!"

There are a few cute guys, however, fans of movies like FOTR didn't go to drool over a few actors. They went for a well-developed fantasy movie. Trying to play up a sex symbol thing in a movie like that is ridiculous.

I'm not surprised by the Orlando Bloom lust around here. The women on my site have practically started a Legolas fan club. But as you and they have pointed out, Orlando Bloom isn't attractive, just his character.

Rose Cotton
01-01-2002, 09:08 AM
Well I don't know about sex symbols because I don't go goo goo about people. I also don't know about Orlando but you have to admit that Elijah is kinda cute.

Nenya
01-01-2002, 12:10 PM
Well, I've always had a crush on Frodo and seeing him played by Elijah doesn't really reduce it... So I won't puke on my keyboard!(But i also promise I won't become an Elijah Wood junkie, Ionia! )
But yeah, I can see the point. LotR and sex; Doesn't really suit well together, does it? Actually I can't think of many other things that would make a worse pair. But I think it's kinda interesting to watch how our dear society will try and make also this a matter of sexuality. And it gives you a good laugh! (Imagine what Tolkien would've thought about his hairy little hobbits ending up to be sex symbols...!)And we'll have to admit that most of the actors aren't unattractive...So, I can understand the teen magazines trying to make the non-Tolkienists intrested. Let's not make this into such big of a deal, let's rather laugh to the narrow-minded people who think there's no world behind Britney Spears. (no offence, Britney)

Lush
01-02-2002, 12:40 AM
Heh, I think I maybe had a little too much fun in celebrating the coming of the New Year, so forgive me for lacking logic and decorum, but I think that under the appropriate circumstances, sex can go pretty much with everything! However the word "sex" should not be made synonimous with the name of Britney Spears; Britney is not "sex", she is corporately-packaged monstrosity (at least as a public persona; in private, she could be the greatest girl ever, but personally I'd rather sit through five minutes of nails scratching on a blackboard than a Britney music video).
As for the whole Orlando Bloom/Legolas deal, the fact that I, and thousands of other females, suddenly developed a crush after seeing the movie was enevitable, and does not do disservice to Tolkien in any way. He meant for Legolas to be attractive, as far as I can understand. In that sense, PJ & Bloom succeeded admirably.

I could have swore I saw a picture of her on a playboy page (It was part of a picture gallery on a German website.. dont worry. ) and I just went back to look for it, but it wasnt there. Elendur-To the best of my knowledge (and my mind is an ocean of useless entertainment trivia) Liv Tyler did not do any Playboy shoots. Sorry.
But alas, if you wish to see her in various states of undress, look no further than "Stealing Beauty."
As for the whole space-between-mouth-and-chin dilemma that you're having, let me just say that I sincerely hope never to end up on a date with you! My Mrs thinks Aragorn looks just like the description in the books (I read FOTR to her last year, will pickup TT this year.)
She already had a crush on Aragorn.
Now she wants me to take her to the theatre AGAIN to see the movie. She NEVER sees a movie in the theatre twice. I know what (who) she REALLY wants to see!

(P.S. Rosie is a cutie-pie! Pass it on!)

Snowflake

I can understand why some people would find them attractive. I myself thought 2 of the actors were very cute. I just don't talk about these things. (I went to see the movie with my dad. I'm sure he'd love to hear me talk about how cute they were all the way home. 45 minutes.) It's okay to think they're cute or whatever, but that isn't the point of the movie, and making it into one of the major points is silly.

Lush
01-04-2002, 02:46 PM
Yes, sweetie, but the "cuteness" of the actors is, sadly, what makes a movie more successful at the box office. Some people out there will go to see the movie not because they want to have a great cinematic experience, but because "Liv Tyler is hot," or "Viggo Mortensen is the sexiest man ever," or "Elijah is soooo cute!"
Does anyone really think that Titanic would have broken the box office record if it wasn't for all those obsessive little girls who came again and again to devour Leo with their eyes?
Since I loved the film adaptation of LotR, I don't mind the fact that people do this. And if one of those that comes and sees it only for the eye-candy leaves with a genuine interest in Tolkien, well, it's all worth it!

I originally went to the movie for the movie. I first had the Hobbit and LOTR trilogy read to me by an older sister when I was 5 years old. I then read it again when I was older. Let's just say all the books are so old and worn now that I have to buy a new set for all the pages are falling out of the binding. I definitely went to the movie for the story line. BUT....now I have to admit that Jackson cast a very sexy cast. All the hobbits are ao adorable that they beat out N'Sync in charm. Legolas and Aragorn are total babes too. So now when I go see the movie, it's for the story as well as the drool factor. Face it, they are hotties.

All we want to do is pick up Pippin and huggle the Hobbit all day. Sooo adorable.
Now, for Legolas... I love the actor for his talent alone. Guildhall is extremely difficult to get into and he made it. As for the character.. what an ideal Elf! Those eyes, that snow walking, that bow! I'm stopping, I'm stopping! I must say that this is all very amusing at 2 am. I can understand where all this lust is comming from, Tolkien created fantsay characters of which we see nothing in real life. Honnestly, what woman doesn't have fantasies about white knights etc. Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Elijah Wood as froodo etc are just living images of those same fantasies. it's inevidable, i have seen girls go crazy over the kid who plays harry potter and believe me, that would be seriously illegal. lol, vomit and all its what happens. so sit back and laugh at the hystical antics

I have to admit that when I saw the movie I noticed Legolas straight away and then went to see the movie for the second time because of him.
But I did like the movie alot and inspired me to read the books which I can't beleive I didn't do earlier because they are so good.
As to the Hobbit hottie thing and sex in Middle Earth I don't think that the Hobbit Hottie was referring to sex in any way. Just because they appeal to many girls doesn't mean they are thinking of them in that way. Just that they are cute and make the movie better than if it were filled with ugly people who people cringe to watch (although it would be extremely hard to make the movie look bad).

Boromir was very manly, as was the sublime (*wink wink*) Mr. Aragorn, but Legolas was the complete package. There is nothing lowly or classless about swooning as long as it is done in an original manner. You can bore everyone to tears by using bad grammar, and saying stuff like, "oh MY GOSH, Legolas is, like, SOOO FREAKIN' HOT! Hubba hubba!"
...Or you can say, "But only to feel his steady archer's gaze upon the back of my exposed neck!"
It all comes down to eloquence. Well, and a sense of humor too. I mean, it's pretty funny to be gaga over a bratty, bungee-jumping Brit (nice use of alliteration, eh? And I mean "bratty" in the best possible way); it's even funnier to be gaga over a non-existent ELF with flowing blond hair. I can just imagine him getting the tangles out in between shooting down orcs.

I actually went to see the movie for the movie its self, I love action movies, but after the movie was over I do think I felt somthing for the actor that played Frodo unfortunatly. But after I saw the movie I dedicated myself to reading the books and thus became even more in love with the character Frodo(even the character Sam too) and lost intrest with the actor E. Wood. Before I even saw the movie, I didn't want to see it because it had certian actor and actresses in it, I didn't even know who most of the actors or actresses were, I went to see the movie for its qualities and effects(I love that stuff about movies).
And seeing girls drooling over the fact that Legolas or the actor Orlando Bloom who played him is "such a cuttie" makes me sick, since I do have to go through that every single day because I have a friend who is madly obsessed with N'sync.
But, its just revolting. I think it has alot to do with who the actor played as to whether people will find them hot or not. If Bloom had played anyone else but Legolas then I doubt so many people would like him so much. Same goes for Elijah and all the rest.
I read the books after i saw the movie and really loved Sam in the books and when I saw the movie again I thought he was cuter than the last time because I knew more about his character.

Rinberethial, I agree, it's the characters, not just the actors. Here's my two cents:
Orlando Bloom - nah; Legolas - cute!
Elijah Wood - cute; Frodo - love at first sight (those BIG eyes!)
Viggo Mortensen - good looking, but... (saw him in "28 Days") - it's as Aragorn that he looks really good!!

sorry i'm joining late...
I agree with that as well, I know several people who haven't read the books and they didn't find Legolas nearly as attractive as my personal selection of fanatics. Everyone went for Aragorn though...
On the other hand, my best friend and i are listening to the radio 4 series re-runs. We're only at Weathertop and she's already fallen in love with Strider, having never seen any pictures of the film.

well I only really noticed Legolas and maybe Frodo cause of his big blue eyes, and I did see the movie first but you still get a fairly good idea about the personalities of the characters from that.

as its a film, the actors have to be nice to look at otherwise you'll be looking at them and thinking, "Ok, so which one's the Orc?"
I have to admit, I do notice when actors (and actresses) are goodlooking, and for a while had a crazy crush on Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, but when I saw it again I began to see... Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Sean Bean and practically all other people in this film were fair to look upon.
i dont know about you but i like it this way. its actually how i pictured them as well... so thats doubly as cool

I read somewhere that Peter Jackson deliberatly chose actors who were known but not too famous because if he had gotten really famous people to be in it they would be conflicting. Having a famous book character played by a famous actor people wouldn't know which to like more (something like that anyway)

*tuts*
hehe, you really like him dontcha? i think its cute... only, some people are really strange about it... they dont even know his name and expect to marry him? bah!
but, get-famous-quick-tips... hmm... theres always the make-friends-with-JK-Rowling-and-become-Fleur-for-book-4s-film idea that i had... but that'll so fall through.
but im sure that if you do something radically crazy (like bungee jump off the moon) he might just notice you...

we could use the stalk-him-like-a-psycho ploy. Good in getting him to notice you but once he calls the police on you it kinda ruins your chances

Lets just hope 'someone' doesn't close this thread because it's not very Tolkein related like he did the other Orlando Bloom thread. Maybe a little jealous???
