I was a big fan of Firondoiel's thread for FotR, so I thought I'd start one for TTT.
For those who don't know, the point of this is to vote for what you thought a certain character's best line and worst line was. You can pick more than one for each if you have lots of favorites or ones you hated, but if you do, please rank them. What I'm going to do is add up the votes and post what the consensus is. C'mon, it'll be fun!
To avoid confusion, let's have some simple rules to follow:

We only vote on one character at a time.

You wait for me to tally up the votes and pick a new character instead of going onto a new character without me (not beause I'm power-tripping; that's just the way Firondoiel did it!)

Try to post as complete a quote as possible.

If you don't get what I'm rambling about, just click on the link and you'll see.
So let's start with Samwise Gamgee.
PS Remember, only TTT lines, I won't count it if it was from FotR.

I think Sams best line was when Faramir asked him if he was Frodo's body guard and he said, "His gardener." I thought that was a good line.

I don't know if this counts, but for Sam's best line, can I vote for his soliloquy about why people should fight against the odds to protect the good left in the earth?
[ December 28, 2002: Message edited by: aragornreborn ]

His worst one was when he said "...Some chips and a piece of fried fish." Mainly because I can't imagine Hobbit's eating Chips.

Arwen Evenstar the Fair
12-28-2002, 02:02 PM
he didn't mean chips like we know them, he meant chips as in small hunks of potatos that they would cut and eat with their meals! not like Lays chips or anything lol

Best line:
Sam: I don't think Gandalf meant for us to come this way.
Sam: Samwise the Brave.
I think I need to see the movie again

What a difficult character, Sam. He has tons of wonderful lines, and at least at the moment I can't think of a single bad one!
Hmm,let's see...
Nope, I still can't think of a bad line! Come on guys, there's got to be even one...Where have all the anti-TTT people gone?!
Anyways, my favourites are:
"Don't you recognise your Sam?" ( for obvious reasons...)
and that potatoes-thing. Could anyone quote it for me?
[ December 28, 2002: Message edited by: Nenya ]

I'm english so chips are cut up pieces of potatoe to me not Crips....(Oh it hard in a world where words mean different things to different people isnt it?) I still can't see him eating chips that's why I hate that line, but I love all the other part you know boil 'em, mash 'em, put 'em in a stew. But no chips(fries)!

Sam's best line: "His gardener."
Worst line: That whole crappy preachy speech at the end of the film

Sam's best line was: "PO-TA-TOES!"

Elvenglass

YES! PO-TA-TOES was definately the best line ever! I almost fell out of my seat I was laughing so hard.

Ooops, my mistake. Just read the thread title, said best/worst lines of TTT. Ah well...I would say that the best line of Sam's would have to be when he's talking to Frodo in the forest, about being put into a song.

Maeglin
12-29-2002, 04:53 AM
"his gardener" was truly great.
I also liked.
"It's your sam. Don't you recognize your sam?"
and...
"But there is no such army, my lord!" by Wormtounge. lol.

12-29-2002, 09:53 AM
I agree with Pookabunny, Elvenglass, and Zacattack with the whole PO-TA-TOEs thang, i also liked the gardener and the "Lets hear about frodo and the ring" story bit, i almost cried (alright i did), but the potatoes thing is the best. Didn't like sam bein so horrible 2 Smeagol though (not gollum, sam can kick his skinny *** as much as he wants for all i care) because Smeagol was kinda sweet.

The Silver-shod Muse
12-29-2002, 11:54 AM
Best:
"His gardener"
Worst:
"You're 'opeless" (to Gollum) But even that line wasn't bad, just not as good as the others.

Eomer of the Rohirrim

Best: "His gardener!"
Worst: hmmm.....I'm not going to be helpful here Diamond, there was no bad Sam line.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire
12-29-2002, 03:43 PM
Sam's best lines (i cant put jsut one) were "PO-TA-TOES", "Samwise the brave...", and "His GARDENER!" hee hee, those were the best!
Worst line? hmm, cant really think of any. The only part i didnt like was when Sam was being so mean to Smeagol (NOT GOLLUM) because Smeagol was pretty nice.

PippinSqueak
12-29-2002, 06:43 PM
Best:
1. Sam: "I'm his gardener"
2. Sam's speech at the end
Sort of worst:
Although i love Legolas oh so much..his "a red sun rises, blood has been spilled this day" comment was totally random. They should have fit it into the story a bit better

Best lines:
Both speeches at the end.
"it's your Sam. Don't you know your Sam?"
and basically anything he said throughout the course of the movie.
Worst line:
"you can't save him, Mr. Frodo." It wasn't badly said or anything, it's just that Sam didn't realize that he was also referring to Frodo in an obscure way.
Sam's the best

I do have to agree with the gardner part, but with the whole potatoes thing I liked when he said "Fry them mash them, stick them in a stew".

Faye Took

I really don't think Sam had any bad lines in TT. Sean Astin made him sound really good so I don't think he had a worst line.

My Cat Sasha
12-29-2002, 09:05 PM
If he HAD to have a worst line, it would have to be "I don't believe you!" when Gollum is swearing by the Ring. But still think that was a cool line because it shows that he doesn't think Gollum is trustworthy.

I also love the "gardener line". Also the line where he talks about them being put into story .
Another fav was the his speech at the end "It's just like the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were." And the part where he says roughly something like "We shouldn't even be here, but here we are"
I only know some parts of the speech unfortunetly.
Does anyone know the whole thing??
I guess if i had to pick a worst line it would be "I don't trust you!" to Gollum. Not because it was that bad or anything, it just seemed really sudden.

The only place I can find any quotes from TTT is here, and it has hardly any. So anyway, I just got back from seeing it today, and I already can't remember the quotes exactly. When will the script be available?
But my votes are:

"I wonder if we'll be put into any stories. 'Let's here about Frodo and the Ring!' 'Yes, that's one of my favorites. Frodo was very brave, wasn't he, Dad?' 'Yes, my boy, the famousest of the hobbits, and that's saying a lot.'"

The speech at Osgiliath, which I can't remember entirely, but it ends "There's good in the world, and it's worth fighting for."

"Po-tat-toes...boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew."

"Oh, Lembas bread! And look, how lovely, more Lembas bread."

"His gardener."

His worst was "I don't believe you!" Not that he should believe Gollum, but it was too violent and vicious sounding.
So now I'm going to count 'em, mash 'em, and stick 'em in a stew and tell you all the results.

Diamond18

Alrighty. The consesus is:
Sam's Best: "His gardener."

Sam's Worst: "I don't believe you!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For our next character, let's do Faramir. For me, it's pretty easy.
My votes:
Best: "Then it [my life] is forfeit."
Worst:
"The Ring is going to Gondor."
"Take them to my father. Tell him I send a mighty gift."
quote:
I only know some parts of the speech unfortunetly.
Does anyone know the whole thing??
Fortunately, I fell in love with that speech and have memorized it:
It's just like the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's just a passing thing, this shadow. Even the darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it'll shine out the clearer. Those were the ones that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. [Frodo: What are we holding on to, Sam?] That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.
*takes a bow* Once you've seen it six times, it's not that hard (sorry, I know I'm bragging) Sorry if that was a bit off topic, Diamond
Faramir-
Best line: He was my brother (with the small cracking in the voice )
Worst line: ...a chance for Faramir, Captain of Gondor, to show his quality...
Best:
"Then it is forfeit." - I didn't think that any of Faramir's lines were very good. Too bad "not if I found it on the highway" was cut.
Worst:
"The ring will go to Gondor." - When I heard this the first time, I went into shock and could hardly watch the rest of the movie. It ruined everything that came after.
Faramir's best line: "Then it is forfeit"
Worst: "Now we understand each other". Huh? How does watching Frodo try and give the ring to a nazgul make you understand him? How does dragging him to Osgiliath(sp) make him understand you? It doesn't explain why Faramir suddenly changes his mind (which is surely what everyone is wondering). It's just a Random Mysterious Comment (tm).
aragornreborn
Best Line: Then it is forfeit.
Worst lines: The "it is time for Faramir to show his quality" one
and
the "I think we finally understand each other Frodo Baggins" one.
Why in the world do they understand each other, now? Frodo was about to give the ring to a flying Nazgul but was stopped by his gardener and then Frodo almost killed said gardener. Then Frodo and the gardener cry. Faramir and Frodo understand each other, now?
Diamond18
01-01-2003, 12:02 AM
That line about "understanding" threw me, too. Watching it the second time I saw that Faramir was listening to Sam's whole "there is good in the world" speech. So that would explain why he "finally" understands Frodo's Quest. But why Frodo should understand Faramir at that point is still beyond me.
I'll count tomorrow...or later today, I guess...
(or something like that)
"The theives...the filthy little theives! They stole it, my precious, and we wants it!"
"Look what good Sméagol caught! Eat them, eat them! *crack* They're young and tender and fresh!" (or something like that!)
Worst:
"Go away and never come back!" I think they overdid the "good Sméagol thing" (more Jekyll and Hyde than Slinker and Stinker) and I was skeptical that Sméagol could really tell Gollum off that easily.
LOTR_know-it-all55: I'm not sure why a lot of other people don't like that line, but I don't like it because it's in the wrong place. It makes Legolas seem superstitious among other things (can anyone say Ioreth and her kinswoman? )
Diamond18
That's pretty much the same reason why I don't like it. "And as I was telling my kin-elves...red sky at night, sailor's delight, red sky in the morning, sailor take warning..."
So, thanks to Maylin we have a tiebreak! Wohoo!
Legolas' Best Line: "Would you like me to describe it to you? Theoden
Best:
# "Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountain. Like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the west--behind the hills--into shadow."
# "Where is Theodred? Where is my son?" (that was sad)
Worst:
I noticed that he had quite a few bad ones
# "This is it? This is the best you can do Sauruman?"
# "Get the wounded on horses. Leave the dead." (You can tell Legolas was mad by that statement as well)
# "So much death. What are men to do against such reckless hate." (His facial expression was psychotic during these lines)
Theoden's best line: (to the effect of) "the last time I looked, Theoden, not Aragorn, was King of Rohan."
Worst line: the one about reckless hate. seemed disjointed and somewhat pathetic.
Theoden's Best:
"Where is the horn that was blowing?"...etc. The only point in the film when I was moved almost to tears.
Theoden's Worst:
"So much death." He sounded...well, quite strange when he said this. Unconvincing.
In addition:
I know Gollum has been covered already, but there is one line he spoke that hasn't been mentioned and that I think is one of the film's funniest because of how he delivers it:
"What's taters, eh, precious? Theoden--
Best: Fell deeds await. Now for wrath. Now for ruin. And the red dawn! Forth Eorlingas! (didn't that inspire hope and shivers into anyone? )
Second Best (does that count for anything, Diamond?): Why should I welcome you, Gandalf Stormcrow? (I don't really like the line, but I loved the way that even before he finished speaking he turned to Wormtongue, kind of asking him if that was the right thing to say. Nice show of dependence on his "faithful" advisor)
Worst: I will not risk open war. (duh! By what the movie shows, half your country's people are homeless or slaughtered )
Ha! I'll bet you thought I'd never get around to counthing up Thédoen, didn't you? I know, I know... Anyway, here they are.
Best: "Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow."
And though it only got one vote, I'd like to give an honorable mention to: "Fell deeds await. Now for wrath. Now for ruin. And the red dawn! Forth Eorlingas!"
(Kudos, mortal elf, for remembering that. I loved it, but somehow forgot about it. D'oh!)
Worst: "So much death. What are men to do against such reckless hate?"
Okay, now this thread is going on an official hiatus. There are more characters to do, yes, but I'm becoming rather busy and I can't seem to keep it near the top. Look at it this way, when I bring it back, you'll all have seen the movie about three more times and can recite lines at the snap of a finger.
Best Line would have been Gandalf's Challenge to the Barlog if the entire line was in, but since it wasnt it would have to be line like "The Horn Of Helm will sound once more in the deep!" If anyone knows the actual line, let me know? Also, i loved the Last Alliance Referance "Letho en Phillen!"
Worst: "Fire!" Not sure here, but would the men say "fire" to fire a bow, or a pre-firearms thing like the elvish "Release Your Arrows"
I noticed that for Faramir's worst line "A chance for Faramir, Captin of Gondor to show his quality." got the most votes.
Do you guys relize that that is an exact quote from the books? Of all lines that didn't seem like the worst since it was Tolkien's own words.
Faramir's worst line "A chance for Faramir, Captain of Gondor to show his quality."
I dunno if I'm wrong, but when reading the book I kinda felt he was being sarcastic. Faramir wasn't going to take the ring. But in the movie, he said it, and he really took the ring. That's why it sounds so bad
Calenamarthiel
Okay.
Rose, the quote was from the book, but don't you think it's meaning was rather twisted? That makes it worse, perhaps, than any new line created for Faramir. I voted for "The Ring is going to Gondor" however.
So...the next character:
Gandalf the White
Best:
"Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth! Oops! I'm sorry, I wasn't able to read through to the end, so I thought we were still on Faramir. Gandalf's best line for me was: The gray pilgrim, that's what they used to call me. Three hundred lives of men I wandered this earth, and now I do not have the time. I can't think of a worst line for Gandalf just yet. Another good line would be: Gandalf? Yes, that was my name. I like this line because it shows a strong Frodo who's more like the book Frodo, instead of the weak Frodo who's seen too much during the movie. King Theoden: "No father should have to bury his own son." I know a family whose young boy James Birrell was a victim of a rare cancer called neuroblastoma. James loved LOTR and his family likened him to Frodo carrying his burden through Mordor. Alliance Atlantis organized an advance screening of the Fellowship of the Ring so James could see the movie before he died, and the money raised went to the James Birrell research fund for neuroblastoma. This year we continued the advance screenings with The Two Towers, so it must have been quite a moment for the Birrell family when King Theoden said that. Very true. We're continuing the fund-raising next year with The Return of the King.
Other favourite line: King Theoden recites the verses when he is having his armour fitted onto him. "It shall pass like rain on the mountains...like wind in the meadows."
The horse and rider lines are great - probably because they're taken directly out of the book where they are actually ARAGORN'S lines. Theoden's worst line, and I'm sorry for sounding callous, but "A father should never have to bury his own son." Cliche cliche cliche, ripped out of some sentimental article in Reader's Digest. I know this is from FoTR, but rather then start another thread...
This is in the special edition and always makes me smile. It is when they are departing and Elrond says, "May the blessings of elves, men and free folk go with you." or something pretty close to that.
Anyway, when he says "elves" there's a cut to Legolas. At "men" they cut to Aragorn and at "free folk" they cut to Gimli.
This makes me smile because it reminds me of a Simpson line were the Simpson's home is saved by fire by the local community and Reverend Lovejoy says something like, "Your friends pulled together, be they Christian" (cut to Flanders) "Jew" (cut to Krusty) "or miscellaneous." (cut to Apu).
I guess what makes it funny (well, maybe just to me) is that it can be argued that the tone of the Simpson reference is not exactly out of place.
H.C.
I liked "What businness have an Elf, a Man, and a Dwarf in the Riddermark?" No worst lines, many more good, I just chose one of them. Iknow that the other ones are finished, but I'm sorry I missed them, and woul like to at lest say which lines I liked for some.So much death. What are men to do against such reckless hate was pretty good, actually.
Faramir- well, I noticed that many people seemed to think that his meanest lines were his worst. I think that all that that means was that he was such a great actor for the role that his mean lines really seemed mean. I actually liked all of his lines, even the now we understand each other one, but I especially loved the "a chance for Faramir, Captain of Gondor, to show his quality" even though it was a little bit scary. I don't get how you chose that to be the worst one!
Legolas- No bad lines at all, well mayb I'm a bit prejudiced in his favor, but I really did think that he didn't have any bad lines. I liked the a red sun rises one, but my two favorites are these: a. boe a hyn! neledheran dan caer menig! (and they should be: 300 against 10 thousand!) and all of the lines around that, the whole thing of the fight with Aragorn, even though it was rather uncharacteristic. I don't get how people thought that that was one of the worst lines too! *Makes effort not to punch anyone in the nose* And b. I don't remember the exact lines, but it's when he realizes that Aragorn fell of the cliff. The facial expressions in that scene are really great. Not far behind is definitely his "You're late...you look terrible" line.
Theoden- Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow; The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow. How has it come to this?
Frodo- Too many, too many! The best one by far was definitely the "They are here. hey have come." one. That frieked me out badly, but I loved it.
I'm sorry I talked about the ones there were, before, couldn't help it.
Oh thank you, GaladrieloftheOlden!
I forgot about Eomer line:
"What business does an Elf, a Man, and a Dwarf have in the Riddermark? Speak Quickly!"
THAT is my favorite Eomer line. I change my vote to that!!
I see your point Diamond, on why you don't tally them up as often, or get tired of asking us to vote. I think some of us really like this thread, though. Couldn't you do it for us? *puppy dog eyes* Please???
I'm also going to cast my vote for the speech about Worntongue staying away from Eowyn and for the line that goes somewhat like...
quote:
Not alone! Rohirrim! To the King!
I can't think of a worst line. A while back someone mentioned that we are a bunch of Sam fans. That we are! (or at least I am!)
Well...maybe not all of us...some of us may prefer Legolas...but still not be Orliers. Kill the Orliers!
Eomer's best has to be 'Not alone, ROHIRRIM!'
and ' (whistle)Hasufel, Arod' That whistle was cool! hehehe
Another one is 'I would cut off your head, dwarf if it stood a little higher from the ground.' That was from the book wasn't it?
I think, correct me if I'm wrong, that something like that was in the book, but PJ changed it a bit, or maybe changed who said it, or when, etc. Then again, maybe not.
[ February 28, 2003: Message edited by: GaladrieloftheOlden ]
I would have to agree with diamond on this one, except that I would also add the line that Treebeard says before they go to Isengard to the best list. I'm not sure what it is, but in the book it was really cool .
Best: That doesn't make sense to me, but then, you are very small.
I always like going south. Somehow it feels like going down hill.
Worst: The Ents cannot hold back this war. We must weather such things as we have always done.
(Not even close to what happened in the book!)
Worst: I have told your name to the ent moot and we have agreed...you are not orcs.
Even I am frustrated by this. In fact, I'm frustrated by this guy the whole time he's on screen. I have no Best Line.
Sorry about that.
This isn't just Aragorn but I hate the bit where he's dreaming of Arwen and says "I am dreaming" and she replies "then it is a good dream". How's that for dodgy? (or maybe it's just me)
Aragorn's best:
- War is upon you...can't remember the rest of the line, guess thats a sign I need to watch it again!
- Then I shall die as one of them!
- ...To destroy the world of men
Can't think of any worst lines
Oh hey I'm a Shade! Go me!!
Beruthiel, it's "Open war is upon you, whther you would risk it or not."
Best~When he is describing Merry and Pip's escape from the Rohirrim/Uruk tangle. It's just really really cool. That and "Then I shall die as one of them!"
Worst~Hmmmm...thinking...thinking...thinking...? Ok! "It was a dream, Arwen, nothing more." That just sounds really harsh and mean, like "I hate you it hurts me to look at you go away!"
Aragorn ~
Best Line/s:
"Open war is upon you, whether you would risk it or not."
I also liked when he says to Eowyn:
"You are a daughter of kings, a shieldmaiden of Rohan. I do not think that will be your fate."
I can't decide on a worst line as of yet.
