View Full Version : What's their best line? What's their worst line?

Okay, here's what you do. I am going to randomly pick a character from the FOTR movie and you put down what think is his/her best and worst line. If someone has already put down the line you thought of post a reply voting for that line. The lines that gets the most votes within a week to 2 weeks time (depending on how fast people respond to this)will be declared as the official best line and the official worst line.
Rule 1. You can put down up to three lines for the character's best or worst line.
Rule 2. You don't have to put down a best and worst line.
Rule 3. You can only vote once.
Rule 4. The line has to be from the movie.
Okay, without further ado, the first charater is Aragorn. In my mind his best line is...
"If by my life or death I can protect you, I will."
Worst line...
"The same blood flows in my veins, the sam weakness."

I do enjoy it when he says "Indeed!"
But the best line could be "Be at peace, Son Of Gondor"
His worst line is unquestionably "Let's hunt some Orc!"
I defy you to find a worse line.

Legolas.
Best line: "Goblins!"
Worst line: "This is no mere ranger. He is Aragorn, son of Arathorn".
I just think that sounds really, really awkward. Like PJ just thought "I have to fit Strider's real name in here somewhere, and Orlie is always complaining about not having enough lines..."
And I love the line about goblins. It just sounds good.

Piosenniel, the way a came to that line for his worst was because that line gets on my nerves every time I watch the movie!!! And we're not doing Legolas right now Elenna, we're doing Aragorn. We'll do Legolas next.

good thing i read that u were doin Aragorn 1st! i was about to put my reply on Frodo! well i saved it 4 when u do him.
But about Aragorn, i think his best line is also... "Be at peace, son of Gondor." and i was just wondering, i read on another post sumwhere else how everyone dislikes the line "Let's hunt some orc." i guess i'll choose that 2 as his worst line.
(The reason i don't dislike it as much was because in the theater, my friend, who now lives in CA shouted out "MMMMMMMMM!!!! PORK!!!!" because she thought he said "let's go hunt some pork"!) lolol

Best:
Strider: Not nearly frightened enough. I know what hunts you.
Because he is so smart and scary!
Worst
Let's hunt some orc!
Self explanitory, well maybe not. It is so out of character and just does not seem to fit.

I also vote for "Let's hunt some orc" as worst line. But I think it was because of the delivery.

Best line
Boromir: They have a cave troll!!!
Worst line
Gimli: I'll be dead before i see the ring in the hands of an elf!!
Dumb move being in Rivendell at the time, look closely the guy on Lregolas' left. Looks like he is about to lunge at Gimli.

I don't like that line because it changes Aragorn's character from the book.

So far "Be at peace, Son of Gondor." is in the lead for best line and "Let's hunt some orc." is in the lead for worst line. I think the "winners" will be declared either Monday, Sept. 2nd. ot Tuesday, Sept. 3rd.

The delivery? Look, the Terminator would say "Lets hunt some Orc"
Aragorn Son of Arathorn, Elessar, True King of Gondor and Arnor, would not. It's so far out of character it's unreal.

Firondoiel
09-06-2002, 03:48 PM
Okay the worst line was "Let's hunt some orc." and there was a tie for best line. "I would have gone with you to the end, into the very fires of Mordor." and "Be at peace, Son of Gondor". The next character is Legolas.

I think Aragon's best lines where when he was in Bree.
And what's with everyone? I thought Aragorn's last line was great. "Let's hunt some orc!" It just get's your spirits up. I'm gonna stand against the crowd and say the Aragorn's best line is "Let's hunt some orc!"

Oh, I just noticed. We're doing Legolas.
Best line: I vote for "Fell voice on the air" just cause it's fun watching him walk on the snow.

Legolas' best line? Well, in My humble opinion, its,
"((I forgot the first part)) Gandalf...What did they say about him? I have no the heart to tell you, for Me the greife is still to near"
I aploigze if I got some of it wrong and I deffently hit Myself over the head with an Orc for forgetting the first part.
Worst line?
ORCS!
Thats just My opinion though...

I personally think Aragorn's best line is when he says "I will not let the white city fall!" Worst line: when they're at the council of Elrond and he's says, "...it has no other master!" Did anyone else noticed how wierd his voice sounded right then?
quote:
"Never trust an elf."

Legolas's "Orcs" and "Goblins" don't really count for me because they are only one word each. Plus, they're kind of funny....
Legolas's best line is "I have not the heart to tell you, for me the grief is still too near"
And he doesn't really have many lines does he? So I'll say "Orcs" because he screws his face up as he says it and it's sort of bad.

Lady_Báin
09-07-2002, 07:53 PM
best for legolas "you mean no to follow him"
or "lament of gandalf"..."I have not the heart to tell you for the grief is still to near" but i was sort of paraphrasing.

worst
"(some obscure word?) from dunland!"
or "the horn of gondor" i don't know he jst sort of roles his "r"s funnily, sounds sort of inconsistent.

OK, I know that 30 people are gonna kick me when I say this... But I dont really think "lets go hunt some orc" was the worst line...
I just crack up when I hear him say it, but I don't think its bad...
Besides, it was in the book wasnt it?
Best:"The world is changing. I feel it in the water, I feel it in the air..." or words to that effect. So cool and mysterious.
Worst:
Arwen: Do you remember when we first met?
Aragon: I thought I was in a dream.
Tacky or what?

I dont remember who asked but no, "lets hunt some orc" is not in the book.. The line in the book reads "I will follow the orcs." in answer to the debate of whether to follow Frodo and Sam and thereby leave Merry and Pip to torment and death, or to follow the Orcs, which we all know he decides the fate of the ring bearer was no longer in his hands.
I was rather miffed at the lines that were seemingly needlessly changed.
Oh and for whoever asked about the r's it's called "rolling your r's" and it's apparently the correct pronunciation for many of the languages of Middle-Earth.
all in all I cast my vote as "lets hunt some orc" as among the worst lines of the movie. I think there were too many lines that seemed very out of character for the speaker.

Oooh! I couldn't agree more about "Let's hunt some orc." I watched that bit, and I was really disappointed. It was really uncharacteristic of Aragorn...but anyway, it's been mentioned enough in this forum and I've got some more lines I love...
The best line: Well, I couldn't decide out of "Flee you fools!"--"You shall be: The Fellowship of the Ring"--or "I would have followed you into the very heart of Mordor" of course, there were other really good lines. Sorry if they're not exact... Cool forum!

I'm glad u like the forum Silivren-Niphredil! Here's my opinion on Gandalf.
Best: You cannot pass! I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. Gandalf's best line: "I am a member of the secret flame. Wielder of the flame of Arnor! Dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun! Go back to the shadow!"
Worst line: to Bilbo, "I suppose you thought that was terribly clever."

Mithuial

I know it's been talked to death, but the line 'lets hunt some orc'
I think I figured out why it's so bad and why it just doesnt seem to fit...
In the book, there was a great struggle in Aragorn's mind which way he should take, follow Frodo and Sam, or attempt to rescue Merry and Pippin. Both seemed equally hopeless in their outcome. From the breaking of the fellowship until they get to Fangorn Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are basically on a (from their view) hopeless errand. They never really have hope, but they go on without hope. That's why I love the line "I will follow the orcs" because it's not an arrogant or encouraging line.. It's the answer to a very long descision, and a hopeless future.

Mithuial
09-15-2002, 10:17 AM
All Gandalf's lines are good. But my least favorite is, "I suppose you think that was terribly clever." Maybe because it made him sound a little arrogant. I dunno. It's not that it's a bad line. I just don't like the way he says it, I guess.

elengil
09-15-2002, 05:38 PM
I think the line that I dont care for from Gandalf is "is it secret? is it safe?". Not for the words themselves, but for the (in my opinion) total lack of being in character. All panicy and scared.. that is *not* how Gandalf is supposed to act. Even when he was sure of which ring it was he didnt freak out like that. I didnt like the OOC-ness of it, the words themselves are fine.

Gandalf has many top-quality lines, so I'll try and choose one.
Best line: "So do all who live to see such times. What you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."
Either that or "NO!" (on Caradhras)
Worst line: "Go back to the shadow!" I'm not sure why but I don't really like that line. It's hardly bad though but I had to choose one.

My favorite Gandalf quotes:
1)"Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or evil, before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many."
2)"So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring, in which case you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought."
Also, I know I'm a bit late, but my favorite Aragorn quote is:
"Indeed? I can avoid being seen if I wish, but to disappear entirely, that is a rare gift."
[ September 23, 2002: Message edited by: ElanorGamgee ]

I just love how he talks
Worst Pippin line: "Great, ashes on my tomatoes!"
I know I'm very late, but best/worst lines of the previous characters...
Aragorn/Best line: "Indeed? I can avoid being seen if I wish, but to disappear entirely, that is a rare gift."
Aragorn/Worst line: you know, I really can't think of one at the moment...
Legolas/Best line: the whole lament to Gandalf bit...sorry can't remember it either! Drat! *hides*
Legolas/Worst line: "ORCS!" The look on his face is hilarious!
Arwen/Best line: (in Elvish) "The Shadow does not hold sway yet, not over you, not over me."
Arwen/Worst line: (in Elvish)"Come back to the light..."
Gandalf/Best line: "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" he sounds so powerful when he says it!
"A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. "I made a promise, etc." (I know, lazy me )
Worst: I watched the movie twice in the last 24 hours...but I can't think of a bad line for Sam. I think Gandalf's best line is more of an entire scene, but it was my favorite because it was actually in the book.
FRODO
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
GANDALF
So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All they have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to them. Helkasir i see your point, i thought Aragorns part in fotr (the movie) to be sort of fumbly and uh... well weird. i didn't like his "character", how he had an amazing talent to say every line a bit off (in my mind). but you can't please everyone and i thought his performance was probably the best possible, if you catch my meaning. but i am positively bursting with anticipation for his (undoubtably) better performance in TTT. yay!!

Just a general comment here -
Best lines - Most of them. The movie was so wonderfully done that even the lines that in a lesser film would have had me rolling my eyes ("But you have chosen the way of pain!") somehow became good. And Sam's American-ish accent didn't bother me too much. The character was so well played, and besides, he's got a bit of that comic servant aspect to him - aren't they supposed to have silly accents? (I'm American, in case anyone hadn't guessed).
Worst Line: "And now, perfected - my fighting Uruk-Hai!" Not because it's that bad in itself but because "Fighting Uruk-Hai" sounds WAY too much like the nickname for a college football team (Fighting Irish, anyone?). It's just a little disconcerting.

Helkasir

Most of the lines were a little down played, in my opinion. They were not as good as they could have been; sometimes it was the actor's fault. Ian did a really good job of avoiding it. As a movie, it doesn't match the likes of braveheart, which is filled with so many good lines that it's insane. That doesn't mean it was a bad movie by any means, though.

All Merry's lines were good...even that nasty one where he said "That rules you out, Pip." But since he was picking on Pippin, I'll say that's his worst. Frodo's best line . . . hmm . . . Heh. Someone needs to see the movie again!
"It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance." I know nobody else will vote for this, but he delivers it so well! (And of course, it's then followed by Gandalf's best line! )
Worst line: "Put it out you fools! Put it out! Yep. That really bugged me too. I mean, he IS supposed to be a student of elvish speech! And he can't even say Mordor! Well, I seem to be the only one that appreciates Elijah's work. I think he did a splended job.
I'm going totally against Eomer in saying I think Frodo's lines to Boromir during the breaking of the fellowship were his best. He delivered them in just the right way and was made even better by the fact that Sean Bean was acting that part well too. Frodo's best line from that part was definatly:
"I know what you would say and it would seem like wisdom but for the warning in my heart."
That, my friends, is pure Tolkien.
Frodo's worst line was...NOTHING! HA!

Eomer of the Rohirrim

It wasn't really a bad line but they forced me to pick one! I'm sorry, I'M SORRY!!!!!
And Elijah Wood did read the book as a child. He was ecstatic about getting the part, and not just because of the money!

Diamond18

Elijah read "The Hobbit" as a child, not LotR. Anyway, he said that he read LotR after the movie, so at least he's read it.
I liked his performance, I'm not saying I didn't... And wohoo! Yes, it was pure Tolkien..."my heart" and all. Anyway, what am I yammering about? Oh, I've decided not to go back and edit my post. He really didn't have a bad line.

Frodo's Best:
1) I will take the ring to Mordor! Though... I do not know the way...
2) NOOOOO!!!!! (when Gandalf falls in Moria)
3) You are late!
Little late, but my fav Pippin lines were"steady on, Frodo!" in Bree, and "I'm hungry" in moria.
More late quotes:
Gandalf just kicks sooo much tail! Here are my fav Gandalf lines:
1) Fly you fools!
2) YOU...SHALL NOT...PASS!!!
3) Fool of a Took! Throw yourself in next time and RID us of your STUPIDITY!
We need to give props to the talking ring! My favorite thing said by the ring was: "Aragorn....ELSSAR..."
Elrond's WORST line was: "You have only one choice" - I was waiting for him to say "...Mr. ANDERSON..."
I think PJ's cameo and bass boomin' burp make up for all the corny bad lines :-)

mark12_30
11-02-2002, 10:04 PM
Frodo's best line: "I'm not like you, Bilbo." Underscores the entire concept of reluctant but dutiful self-sacrifice (as opposed to Bilbo's "Well, let's have at it" attitude.)
Frodo's worst line: no worst lines-- I just hate it when PJ has him scared and slithering backwards into a corner instead of charging, Sting drawn, like Tokien describes Frodo in the books. But that's the scriptwriter's & director's fault, not Wood's.

I know what you would say and it would seem like wisdom but for the warning in my heart.
2. There is no other way.
3. I'm going to Mordor alone.
Worst: What's the Elvish word for friend?
I don't like that part in the movie!!! Why did PJ have to change it? It makes Gandalf look pretty dum and also Frodo should have known the Elvish word for friend!!!
I think I'm going to give people a little bit more time to vote because right now there's a three-way tie for best and worst and the lines for the worst only have one vote each. So I will probably post the results later tomorrow.

Um . . . I liked that part. In the book, Gandalf isn't the . . wait . . . let me check this before I totally stick my foot in my mouth! Hmm . . . you're right! Gandalf is the one that figured it out! All by his own self! Although it took him awhile. And hey, Boromir threw the rocks in the water! Not Pip and Merry! And Gimli is the one who said, the whole, "Simple, really, if you're a freind you speak the password!" And I say I really need to read the books again!

I'd have to agree with Firondoiel RE:Frodo's worst line.
Frodo would have known the Elvish word for friend (Mellon) - but it was Gandalf who figured the riddle out. Frodo Results. There's still a three-way tie for best.
1. You're late.
2.I will take it! I will take it! I will take the ring to Mordor... Though - though I do not know the way.
3. I know what you would say, and it would seem like wisdom, but for the warning in my heart.
Worst: What's the Elvish word for friend?
Glad to see I'm not the only one who dislikes that part! Hah! I know this!!!! (Really!)
Boromir's Best: "They have a cave troll." I love how he says that!!! Even if nobody else does!!)
More best lines: "I would have followed you my brother, etc."
"Frodo, I'm sorry!!" That line just cut me to the heart. I had never really liked Boromir in the books, but the instant he said that line, I just about died! Until HE died, I clutched my friend's hand, and whispered, "He's going to die! (Friend's name) He's going to die!" over and over. Heh. I think I made the other people crazy!!
Worst line: "Gondor has no king. Gondor needs no king." Such a little thing.
3)Have you ever seen it, Aragorn? The White Tower of Ecthelion glimmering like a spike of pearl and silver, its banners caught high in the morning breeze? Have you ever been called home by the clear ringing of silver trumpets?
Worst:
1)Gondor has no king. Gondor needs no king - I agree that Mr. Bean delievered this line well, but the line was terse.
2) Still Sharp - yea this is a tribute to an old show Sean Bean did (character's name was Sharpe), and he adds anything "sharp" into his lines (I know, it's scripted).
3) It could have been mine. It should be mine! Give it to me! - I know, this line is essential to Boromir's downfall to the power of the ring...blah blah blah..but dammit it still ****es me off...

I want to change my vote. I did say "What is this new devilry?" but I just remembered an altogether better part.
"One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its Black Gates are guarded by more than just Orcs. There is evil there that DOES NOT SLEEP! And the Great Eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, and ash, and dust. Not with ten thousand Men could you do this. It is folly!"
That's not really one line but whatever. It rules.

So here goes:
Best:
1:It's moving fast and against the wind
2:This isn't a mine it's a tomb
3:Oh they have a cave troll (he says it in such an offhand matter as if a cave troll was no biggie)
4:Forgive me I did not see. I have failed you all. Leave it. It is over. The world of men will fall and all will come to darkness, and my city to ruin. (These are the most emotional words in the whole movie, I tear up every time I watch that scene.)
Worst:
1:What would a mere ranger know of these matters. (I don't know, this is about the only bad line I could find for him.)

Diamond18

I don't really want to change my vote, but I wanted to mention one of his lines from the Extended Version:
"You carry a great burden, Frodo. Do not carry the weight of the dead."
Grr, I can't remember how it began, but that's how the line finished.

I nominate these two:
1. Forgive me--I did not see. I have failed you all. Leave it, it is over...the world of men will fall and all will come to darkness... And my city to ruin.
2. I only ask for the strength to defend my people! (For the sheer passion that it is delivered with)

ALL of Sean Bean's lines were excellent; he did one of the finest jobs I have seen in any recent movie, and he surely deserved at least an Academy Award nomination, perhaps the Award itself. Even lines that were terribly awkward or screamed, "This is what's going on right now, all you newbies" were delivered gracefully and passionately. He put enormous effort into understanding Boromir's character and this easily shows through in his performance, even when some of the lines or actions provided by the script seem out of Boromir's character. A shame that we will see no more of Sean in these movies...
[ November 15, 2002: Message edited by: Melichus ]

Okay, I posted the results for Saruman a few days ago but the forum went haywire and deleted it. So here they are again.

Tie for best. 1:"The Nine have left Minas Morgul. They crossed the River Isen on midsummer's eve disguised as riders in black...They will find the Ring, and kill the one who carries it."
2:"Smoke rises from the Mountain of Doom, the hour grows late and Gandalf the Gray rides to Isengard seeking my counsel."
Worst:"I gave you the chance of aiding me willingly, but you have elected the way of PAIN!"
Let's do Gimli for the next character. My vote for him...
Best: 1. "I asked for one hair of her golden head, and she gave me three."
2. "Let them come! There is one dwarf yet in Moria who still draws breath!"
Worst:"Then it has all been in vain, the Fellowship has failed."

Gimli's best: Let them come! There is one dwarf yet in Moria who still draws breath!
Gimli's worst: (mutters) ....stupid.... (to Galadriel)
can't make it out but it's not great.

Gimli's Best:
1) I asked her for one hair from her golden head...she gave me three.
2) Let them come, there is one Dwarf yet in Moria who still draws breath.
3) Soon, Master Elf, you shall enjoy the fabled hospitality of the Dwarfs...ale and meat off the bone...
4) This isn't an official vote, of course, but I really love all his lines. Except for:
Gimli's Worst:
1) Whatever that was he said in Dwarvish to Haldir.
2) I will not see the Ring in the hands of an Elf.

Someone or something (maybe a hungry Wight) ate half my last post wit the Saruman-lines, but I hope it goes well this time:
Gimli! I like Gimli! Heeere we go:
BEST:
1. Not the beard!!
2. No one tosses a dwarf!
3. I asked for one hair of her golden head. She gave me three.
I think the two first ones are a bit OOC, but still, they're funny.
WORST:
1. Never trust an Elf!
2. I will be DEAD before I see the Ring in the hands of an Elf!
That's a bit TOO much OOC...

I don't think the I will not see the Ring in the hands of an Elf." line is that bad.
How I see it, he's a dwarf, and we all know that dwarves and elves didn't get along. And I can see with how the scene of the council of Elrond became intense, that yes, he just might say something like that. And it didn't seem out of character, in my opinion.
I don't have any best or worst lines from the movie for gimli. *shrugs*

Maybe we shouldn't discuss this here, but I feel that even though Elves and Dwarwes truly disliked each other, a Dwarf would never burst out with something kinda emotional like that in such a situation, or in any situation for that matter. It just doesn't feel right.

I forgot about that "Hands of an Elf!" outburst.
Gimli surely spoke Elvish to Haldir. After all, Aragorn understood him, and if Aragorn knows Dwarvish I'll eat my hat.

Gimli had some GREAT lines - and he's gonna have the best line in TTT (if anyone else heard, ya know what I mean..mwwaaauuuaahahaha!)
Here's my vote for his best lines:
1. Let them come! There is one dwarf yet in Moria who still draws breath!
2. And MY AXE!
3. I asked for one hair of her golden head. She gave me three.
Worst:
1) 'Anyone was to ask for my opinion, which I note they're not, I'd say we were taking the long way 'round. - in the book, Gimli knew better...he didn't want to go into the mines.
2) 'Nothing, it's just a wisp of cloud' - that's just stout ignorance.
3) 'Then it was all in vain. The Fellowship has failed.' - Talk about giving up!

YAY! GIMLI!
hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm.........
ok
Best: I asked her for one hair from her golden head, she gave me three.
and
Oh yes, just a simple matter of finding our way through Emmon Muin, an impassable labyrinth of razor sharp rocks, and after that! it gets even better, festering, stinking, marshlands, as far as the eye can see
Worst: Nothing, it's just a wisp of cloud
