Finally I have watched TTT (I was waiting for the opportunity impatiently), and I would be glad to share my impressions...

Once there was a topic here under the name of "movies spoiling the books" (or something similar). I failed to find it, so I'm starting a new one. My apologies to those who sincerely found movies wonderful, after all those are personal opinions and no matter to quarrel about. Anyways, I have to admit I was disappointed by the TTT, the reasons being the following:

With the - sign:

Théoden's beard growing back and becoming a "blanje", brrrr. In addition, Théoden is way too proud in the movie "I'm here the King" is not in the line of Théoden as he is in the book.

Exorcism scene is pushed too far (who said Saruman was controlling Théoden directly with his mind? Than what is Grima's niche than?)

Rohirrim are shown as real brats - rusted mail, old swords, not a free proud warriors as in the book. I doubt any Rider would dare to touch Eomer disrespectfully. He's beaten by Grima's orders in the movie

Alas for Faramir, he's shown as a total and complete jerk

Alas for Fangorn, he's even more complete jerk than Faramir

And focusing on Arwen's breast made me swear in the cinema

Aragorn's erotic fantasies whilst floating like a log down the stream - are they nuts?

Elrond was not such a dumb and severe father.

Oh Dear, Dear, Dear - Haldir - what the hell brought they poor chap to Hornburg for, and butchered him?

Where is it told in the book that Gandalf's beard was cut short after his reincarnation?

Why is Gimli such a clown? He plays a fool in the movie, but what for?

Triangular elvish ears? Don't make me laugh

Frodo and Sam are almost trodden on by Sauron's soldier. Hiding under the cloak the way it is shown in the movie reminded me of Harry Potter. boo

+ sign

I liked the battle scenes (though wargs looked more like hyenas!)

Balrog-Gandalf duel in the opening scene was quite cool (though balrogs do not have wings!)

Gollum was tolerable

Grima was a success

Summary: -13 + 4 (or, with the wings and hyenas +2.5)

As a result:

I haven't watched it more than once, though I planned to visit the cinema at least thrice before the movie came out in Georgia

poor, poor Professor...

You know, I thought of you when I saw TTT, H-I. No, really! I thought, "Poor, H-I, he'll be waitinng all the way till February just to be disappointed."<P>Anyway, I guess I won't go into my overall impressions, since they have been quite done to death in all the overall impressions threads that have run their course. Yes, tis unfortunate that you missed out on all the heated debates following the movie! You'll see we've declined into discussing whether Éowyn or Arwen is prettier in our exhaustion.<P>Dig down a few pages and you'll find the real meaty threads.

Did you? I'm flattered :) In fact, I would not have been dissapointed in case it were just some movie. I would have said "it's great" or something. But thus...

I happened to like it, although it doesnt reach the potential of the books.<P> <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:<HR>Frodo and Sam are almost trodden on by Sauron's soldier. But the second time i heard a cry amoungst the audience in the theatre...'they have an invisibility cloak!' It actually made me laugh. And reading your comment made me laugh all over again.

You have got to look at it from non-Tolkien readers (may they RIP.....). I am sure that the film was bloody amazing for them, all the battles and deaths and such...But for us it was not doing justice to the book or Tolkien's genius. Personally, as a film it was very good but sometimes you have just got to let these things go, we can't do anything about it after all!

You know, everyone keeps talking about these non-Tolkien-fan filmgoers for whose sake all these changes were made. But I have seen the film three times, each time in the company of non-readers, of varying ages and tastes. I've also spoken to many others who have seen the films but not read the books, and I have to say that most people didn't really like the film much and everyone seems to have much preferred the Fellowship movie. And the kind of thing that bugged us Tolkien fans about the film didn't please the non-readers either. Everyone I spoke to *hated* the belching comical Gimli as being crass and embarrassing, thought the Merry/Pippin/Treebeard episode was too slow, couldn't see the point of Osgiliath, and so on. And what everyone really liked was Gollum.<BR>In fact, not much different to what us Tolkien fans thought.<P>I *did* like the film, btw - otherwise I wouldn't have seen it three times. What I loved were the battle scenes, which I could have watched forever.<p>[ February 09, 2003: Message edited by: Lalaith ]

All my friends prefered FoTR too. They said Osgilaith was boring and the Nazgul Frodo showdown was stupid, and that it wasn't as 'epic' as the first one.
