The difficulties with the Hobbit is the need for 13 dwarves. Well, that's the historical difficulty, I suppose. Now, it's not so bad, actually, since the way it worked out in LotR, John Rhys-Davies was the right amount taller than the hobbit actors that they all could be in the same shots. If you got a short person for Bilbo, and some big-ish people for the dwarves, and then shot Gandalf and men separately...anyway...
I think the biggest problem is that people who haven't read it will be expecting more LotR, and the Hobbit is a completely different kind of story. I would love to see it, though. Depending how PJ does on RotK, he might be the best one for the job. He has said he'd do it if offered...

The hardest part would be having the part with Smaug...well it could be done with CGI but it still depends how good the animated CGI is.
I would love to see Andy Serkis back as Gollum again...man how come he didn`t got nominated for best supporting role in the part Gollum?

As a story, I think The Hobbit is far easier the LoTR as it has one central story and character. I think the biggest problem, as has already been mentioned, is following the LoTR films. Do you try and follow that mode, or do you make it lighter, like the book? Answer this, should any dwarves have blue beards?
H.C.
