How many folks have seen any of the LOTR actors in other movies? I confess, I'm not much of a movie goer (as you can tell from what I'm about to say), but aside from Sean Astin in Goonies and a chunk of Rudy (during which I kept thinking he just looked like a larger Mikey... I'm afraid I haven't seen anyone in anything. My LOTR-expert friend, with whom I went to see FOTR (see below)and has recommended The Bumblebee Flies Anywhere (with little Mr. Wood), but haven't been able to yet.
(Below is what happened after seeing LOTR-FOTR for the first time....)
----------------------------------------------
My friend and I who went to see LOTR-FOTR the first time last December immediately after leaving the theatre went and hunted down a DVD of Goonies. Whoa....it was like going back in time, it was so wierd. HE (Sean Astin) WAS SO LITTLE!!!!! I found out recently that Sean Astin is about 3 months younger than I am... But he was little. (I remember thinking him to be about 10 then, when he was really 13.) It was so fun watching Goonies...and at one point--don't know if anyone recalls--when the kids are at the bottom of the wishing well..."Mikey" looked up at the camera, and the look on his face just made me bust out at the top of my lungs,
"I made a promise, Mr. Frodo.....!!!!" It was hilarious.
Anywho, I've rambled far too much.

quote:

"When you're a Hobbit, you're always looking up."
~Sean Astin, Goonies DVD
"It all starts here."- Mikey Walsh, Goonies

[ July 29, 2002: Message edited by: Samwise ]

That's funny! I've seen Elijah in Flipper, and Liv Tyler in "Inventing the Abbots" <She was this farm girl, that was eerie> and Cate Blanchett in... um, something. And of course, Christopher Lee in Star Wars. At one point, he says "Join us, my friend" or something along those lines, and I blurted out loud: "It would be wise, my friend." The people around me laughed, so I guess a moment of loudness was okay.

Well, my all-time-fav-actress Cate Blanchtt was starring in this really cool movie "Elizabeth", PLUS someone told me Christopher Lee was in Star Wars 2. That“s all I could think of now.

quote:
Christopher Lee in Star Wars.

Oi...okay, this is gonna sound dumb, but who was he? I've seen every Star Wars movie ever made at least once if not more...Hm. I'm thinking Emperor What's his name...?(not putting it 'cause I know I'll mangle the spelling...)
I'll admit it, I saw the original Star Wars from the back of my mom's Toyota at a drive-in in 1977! Yes, I dated myself, but most folks here know how old I am anyways, and you're only as old as you feel!
Ahem. Back to the topic....seen any LOTR actors in other movies, anyone else.....?

quote:
"My heart's right down in my toes, Mr. Pippin," said Sam. But we aren't etten yet, and there are some stout folk with us. Whatever may be in store for old Gandalf, I'll wager it isn't a wolf's belly. "

Hmmm, oh my, where do I start....
Ian McKellen: Gods and monsters (brilliant), X-men, Richard III
Christopher Lee: Dracula, SW II
Viggo Mortensen: The prophecy (aka Gods army), A perfect murder, G.I. Jane
Sean Bean: Goldeneye, Sharp (series),
Liv Tyler: Armageddon, Plunkett and McLeane, One night at McCools, Empire records,
Sean Astin: Goonies, War of the Rose's, Rudy
Orlando Bloom: Black hawk down
Elijah Wood: Deep Impact, The faculty, Flipper
John Rhys Davies: Indiana Jones
Cate Blanchett: Elizabeth, Bandits, The Gift
I know I've seen more but right now, I just can't remember what...
And yes, I know it, I watch far too many movies. I don't have a life... Or maybe I've just had plenty of time to do it. One of the good things about being "old"
[ July 29, 2002: Message edited by: Maikadilwen ]

Viggo Mortensen was in the 1995 film The Prophecy,he played Lucifer like I had never pictured him.Christopher Walken played the angel Gabriel. This is a very disturbing film.It was great if you get a chance see it.Aragorn is very different in this.

Hugo Weaving is in The Matrix and Ellijah Wood is also in North and Disney's version of Oliver Twist(it stank). Marton Csokas/Celeborn was in SW 2 underneath a mask and costume as one of the senators or was it one of the aliens at Dooku's table.

Miranda Otto (Éowyn) plays a major role in an Australian movie called 'Dead Letter Office'. It's on a German channel tonight, so I may edit to add my impression after seeing it. Unfortunately, I won't be able to hear her voice, since it's dubbed.

Well if most of you are Americans then you won't have heard of this one but Sean Bean was in a film here called 'When Saturday Comes'. It is a film about a great football player (soccer for you across the pond) who has great potential but messes up his life by doing loads of alcohol etc. The best thing though is that the Football Club he plays for is Sheffield United and Sean himself is a lifelong Sheffield United supporter! It was his dream to play for the club and he ended up doing it in a film. Also because I come from Sheffield myself I found the film great as I recoignised all the sets!

If anybody didn't already know but christopher lee was big in the horror monsters genre in the days of Dracula,he portrayed Dracula about 9 times, dracula, the mummy, dr jeckal and mr hyde. Also Viggo was in that awful remake of the hitchcock thriller Psyco. Orlando Bloom is starring along side Heath Ledger in the new film being made in Australia about the notorius Ned Kelly Gang. I cant wait till thats released. Not as much as two towers is released. elijah wood was also in The Faculty, which wasn't bad.

He is a brilliant actor and he has been in heaps of movies, Which i will list below.
* Radio Flyer
* The good son
* Day-o
*Forever Young
*North
*Flipper
*The War
*Huck Finn
*The Faculty
*Black and White
*LOTR (Well we all know that one)
*Try Seventeen (Released 2003)
*The Bumblebee flys Anyway (I can't find this in video stores.
*The Ice Storm (I didn't like this movie)
*Oliver Twist (I loved this movie, and his accent he put on. The rest wasn't that good though, but he was.)
*Deep Impact (He needed more screen time)
*Chain of Fools
*Tom Thumb (This is animated)
*Ash Wednesday
*Thumbsucker (2003)
Well i think that was nearly all his movies. He has done so many, and has been acting since he was 7/8. His best movie being LOTR, he did a perfect role. Sorry if i have bored you but i think he deserves credit for all his movies. I have seen so many of his movies and they are all good.
Well sorry for boring you.

quote:
Dream the impossible because dreams do come true. (Elijah Wood)

Andy Serkis, who plays Gollum, played Bill Sikes in a very good version of "Oliver Twist" for television.
I've seen lots of other LotR actors in many movies, but they've all been listed so I won't bore you. But "The Matrix" is on TV as I type...who else can't resist quoting Agent Smith whenever Elrond is on the screen? "I'm sorry, Gandalf, but your hobbits are already dead."

I've seen a lot of them but those movies have already been listed, so to avoid repeats:
JOHN RHYS-DAVIES: MACRO in "I, Claudius" which is by far the best miniseries ever made, though it faces stiff competition from "Pride and Prejudice." It's impossible to recognize him since he's 25 years younger, clean-shaven, wearing a Roman centurion's uniform, and conspiring with the evil Caligula to butcher everybody in sight. Like Gimli, he has a fairly direct approach to things ("What are we waiting for? Let's destroy it!") but unlike Gimli he's doing it for pure personal gain and ends up being executed in the end, along with most of his compatriots.
ANDY SERKIS: MR. D'AUBAN the dancing master in "Topsy-Turvy." If you want to see Gollum as a perpetually boozed-up Cockney dancing-master trying to teach Japanese fan dances to the original cast of "The Mikado" this is definitely your movie. The thing is I saw this movie before LOTR came out, so knowing that it was Serkis voicing Gollum made it a little weird.

Kalimac! I love that mini-series! (which BTW also has "Captain Picard" playing a VERY evil Sejanus. In fact, I've probably read "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God" as many times as I've read LoTR. A perpetual favorite. Robert Graves Rules!
Also, does anyone know if that is Andy Serkis sitting in the boat as Smeagol in the recently released still from the Two Towers?
P.S. - Welcome back, Kalimac!
[ October 03, 2002: Message edited by: Birdland ]

Oh, remembered some more - Billy Boyd is *going* to be in the Aubrey/Maturin movie they're making right now. So maybe that can be counted as a "future appearance" - I mean, I'm definitely going to see it and all.
And - I don't think I saw this one here - IAN MCKELLEN as Amos the itinerant preacher in Cold Comfort Farm, where he has the immortal line (when preaching to the Quiverers congregation) "But THERE IS NO BUTTER IN HELL!" He's hard to recognize but look closely.
Birdie - Thanks! Nice to see you guys again as well. Can't believe it's been so long; between finally moving into our new apartment, waiting for $%#)* DSL to be hooked up (it only took four visits from the telephone company over the course of six weeks, grrrr), and the new internet tracking at work, I was still shocked to realize it had been 3 months. Oy. Never again. And Patrick Stewart as Sejanus is something else - almost as unrecognizable as Rhys-Davies though; look, he has HAIR!

Well, movies I've actually seen with LOTR actors in it are:
Sean Astin: Goonies
Ian McKellan: X-Men
Christopher Lee: Star Wars II, Sleepy Hollow
Sean Bean: Goldeneye, Black Beauty
Miranda Otto: What Lies Beneath
Cate Blanchett: Bandits
David Wenham: Moulin Rouge
Liv Tyler: Armageddon
Bernard Hill: Titanic, Ghandi
Viggo Mortensen: G.I. Jane
Orlando Bloom: Black Hawk Down (part of it)
Hugo Weaving: The Matrix, Matrix Reloaded, Babe
John Rhys-Davies: Aladdin and the King of Thieves
Ian Holm: some old WWII movie (I can't remember what it's called)
Strange...I have not seen many of the movies the actors from LOTR are in. You'd think I would considering I am fans of all of them.

I have to say that I'd never heard of most of the actors before seeing FotR. I had heard of Christopher Lee, but as I'm not a horror movie fan, I had never bothered to see any of his films. I had also heard of Sean Astin as my kids and their friends really loved "The Goonies", although I never saw it myself until a couple of weeks ago. I had never heard of Elijah Wood prior to FotR. But in reading a list of his films, I discovered that I had seen him in a movie before. Anyone remember "Paradise"? I saw it years ago and was surprised to read that he had played the little boy in the film.

I just saw 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' which is one of the best movies I've seen. Yet, call me crazy, but after seeing this film I don't think Orlando Bloom's acting is at all extraordinary (though still acceptable). One reason for that may be because he is still inexperienced, which is a reasonable explanation. But I think the main reason was because he was working alongside Johnny Depp, whose performance as Captain Jack Sparrow was unforgettable.
On a different note: Doesn't Liv Tyler have a role in the upcoming movie 'Jersey Girl?'

Yeah my sister just saw "Pirates..." (she is a mega Orlando fan), and she said that she thought that he was so hot in the movie that her tongue started bleeding because she was biting on it to keep from squeeling.
But off of the whole Orli subject...
Yes the Aerosmith video that Liv is in is called "Crazy". It is actually a very good video. She and Alicia Silverstone from "Clueless" star as two young girls basically running away from a very conservative school and going on a "Crazy" roadtrip. One of the main Liv highlights is when she takes part in amature night at a strip club (but no, there is no nudity).
Oh and that "Try Seventeen" movie is coming out on DVD. But they changed the name of it, it is now called "All I want" (just in case anyone wants to order it from Amazon)

All I want? Really, now, that's interesting. I wonder why they would change the title of the movie like that after it has already been shown to viewers?
Oh, and I didn't mean to get off on a whole "Orli fan moment" by telling my review of the movie. I noticed that after my comment of what he looked like that many other people began posting about how hot he was in the movie. Well, I don't really want to get in trouble by mods or nothing so really, I would advise that if you read my post above, not to pay attention to that slight comment. Just in case.

I saw Andy Serkis in a film which I watched on DVD on Saturday night called Deathwatch, a so-so horror film set in a trench in World War One (watchable but nothing special). Serkis played one of the soldiers caught in the trench from hell. His character was a complete psychopath (very different to his Gollum character - psycho as opposed to schizo). I was rather disappointed in his performance, given his brilliance in bringing Gollum to life, since his character seemed rather one-dimensional. But that was probably the fault of the script rather than Serkis himself.

I got a couple of things here:
Liv is in Jersey Girl, where from what ive heard Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez(SCHWING!) are lovers and Jennifer dies, so Ben Affleck fallis in love with Liv. its directed by Kevin Smith which means its gonna be pretty sweet
I havent seen the Goonies in a long time, and this is sorta off topic, but isnt Corey Feldman in it? Anyways Mikey was the best.
I saw Pirates of the Caribbean on opening day, and it was rad. Orlando was wicked in the movie, especially in the sword fights. Johhny Depp's character, Captain Jack Sparrow, was a memorable character and was funny as hell! i found myself leanin to my friends in the movie and sayin "no way Sparrow could beat an elf in a swordfight!"
Hidalgo with Viggo looks pretty cool, and thats comin from someone who HATES horses! but the whole desert storm scene in the trailer reminded me of the mummy too!
And another thing, since girls can have their Orlando Bloom, us dudes should have someone to "ogle", but the thing is LotR is kinda a bummer for chicks, Liv is pretty hot, but it needs a "STONE COLD BABE!" in there
wow that was a long post *catches breath*

It was so funny! In my world studies class, the last term, all the movies we watched had actors from Lord of the Rings in them! My best friend and me were having fun pointing them out. First we watched 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' (Ian M.) (it was so weird to see him! I kept thinking, 'Gandalf!!'), then we watched 'All Quiet on the Western Front' which had Ian Holm in it (that was weird to see also, He was tall! I've only seen him in LotR.), and then we watched Rudy (Sean Astin), Sadly we didn't get to finish that movie , but of what I saw it was so cute! Sean Astin was and is such a sweetie!
I've also seen the actors in different movies (of course) and it just seems so weird when I do. They'll always be Gandalf, Frodo, Sam, Legolas, Saruman, (etc.) to me.
Oh, and I did go see Pirates of the Carribean. I thought it was really good (and not just because of Orlando, though we was really dashing and hot)! I think it's cool how they're making the Disney rides into movies... puts more 'depth' to them.

I have watched and enjoyed "From Hell" several times, and I must say that Ian Holm is unforgettable. He gets a particular look in that film, his eyes turn jet black, and it is every bit as frightening as the Bilbo look, although less showy. Definitely worth seeing! (I do have a rule of thumb, though. If Johnny Depp is in it, it is worth seeing! :P ) (This excepts 21 Jumpstreet, however...)
Cheers,
Lyta
[ July 22, 2003: Message edited by: Lyta_Underhill ]

I watched Ghost Ship last night (which quite impressed me as a film) and managed to completely fail to recognise Karl Urban until the credits rolled at the end. Mind you, in my defence, his character probably had the least screen time out of the main cast, and he looked nothing like he did in TTT (probably as a consequence of his character being entirely different ).

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this but Ian Holm was in a movie called The Sweet Hereafter. A wonderfully beautifully melancholic film by Atom Egoyan. Holm's acting is marvellous in its effect and subtelty. Of course, he was brilliant in Alien.
And one cannot forget Christopher Lee, the greatest movie actor of all time (next to Vincent Price). He's been in over 200 movies so it would be kind of time consuming to name them all but if you see a movie with Christopher Lee, rent it, the rest of the movie may be crap but his performance is worth the rental (ex: star wars episode 2)

Himmelstoss is unforgettable as a character because he is harsh and unforgiving to his recruits, making them train in mud and giving them no breaks, basically an A-hole for lack of a better term; then later they meet him in the field and he is totally broken down and pitifully afraid. Not to be missed!
But yes, this is about LOTR actors, and alas, Vincent Price was not in LOTR, although he would have made a fetching Gandalf, or in younger days, perhaps Elrond!
Anyway, Christopher Lee is appealing to me, simply because he was connected to the literary works he portrayed himself in; I heard he had gotten a sanction from Tolkien to play Gandalf, should a movie be made (but with the codicil that his wonderful voice would be wasted and Saruman would be much more suited to him)-don't quote me on this, but I remember it from the mists of memory. Also, he portrayed Mr. Flay in the BBC adaptation of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast, and he was a friend of Peake when Peake still lived.
