Hi, I know this has been brought up before but I swear I cant find it anywhere! In the first movie when Frodo was looking in the mirror he sees legolas but no-one else from the fellowship..actually I think sam might be in there too. Anyway, why legolas? Can anyone give me a link to this topic?

So brief.<P>Actually, I don't recall any other threads on this topic, so here's a response from the Master. Sam is indeed shown in the mirror, and legolas, and sauron, and (presumably) the gaffer. Why? These are probably some of the most favorite characters of the audience, that is, PJ planned it to be so. (Gotta flash as much of Orli as possible for all those nazgirls) The whole scene was ruined anyway, so what does it matter?<P>Just a pointer: we could be asking why Bilbo had to have a red waistcoat at the beginning of the film, and we'd probably get just as much of a profitable response. Reach for the sky, don't dig in the dirt.<P>Iarwain

I agree with Iarwain. The scene is already ruined so it doesn't really matter. I was thinking, why would they show the Shire being ruined if The Scouring of the Shire isn't even going to be included in the RotK?

I agree with both of you but maybe ole Legolas in the mirror made some people feel that he'll die or somthing in the end (a sad time that will be for the nazgirls!)

If you see the extended version, those shots are from Lorien. Haldir had told Frodo that he brought great evil to Lorien. They were sat on a flet, and everyone looked at him, as shown in the mirror, only Gimli also did a glance. I don't think the choice of Legolas (and also Sam and Merry and Pippin) had any significance but to show the Fellowship to Frodo in the mirror.<BR>I think they were just adding random other members so the whole group was covered in the shot. After the glances, Boromir had a talk with Frodo, and Aragorn was talking to Haldir. It was just showing them all, if briefly.<p>[ May 18, 2003: Message edited by: Meela ]

I agree with Meela, the scene makes more sense in the special edition as it connects those images back to the scene on the flet. I think the're meant to show Frodo's feelings of having to distance himself from the Fellowship. Also how much rides on the decisions that he makes. These people's fates depend upon Frodo's decision on whether to strike it alone. From Frodo's persective, they are in danger as long as he is around.<P>As for the scenes of The Shire. That wasn't the scouring of The Shire, it was the razing of The Shire and as Galadriel very clearly states, "this is what will happen should you fail."<P>H.C.

This is what happens when you don't get there first. I was going to say what HC said. Why does it matter if they show the shire burning? As HC said, Galadriel said it would come to pass IF Frodo failed. The scene just showed non-book-readers more of the importance of having the Ring destroyed. I don't have a problem with it.
