It sounds like (in the 1958) letter, he may have pondered them being of use in The New Shadow, if he had finished it--Wasn't he writing that around the late 1950s or so? In any case, it seems like... |

Hollywood has killed innocence. Look at the new "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" or "Snow White and the Huntsman" abominations. Not even Fairy Tales are sacred, oh no, every goddamn thing has to have... |

The Hobbit (1977)
What are Barrow Downs' feelings on it? I think while far from perfect, it was an admirable effort given the time and medium, and did keep true to the spirit and tone of the book. |

Del Toro's Hobbit
Reading a bit about the ideas Del Toro had for The Hobbit, when it was going to be his project, sound a lot better than PJ's and sound in some ways closer to the book: "Del Toro said that he... |

Radagast, Alatar and Pallando
Is it possible that these three did not utterly fail in their mission, and that perhaps the Istari had a mission secondary to defeating Sauron? For example, Gandalf's secondary mission (which would... |

Tolkien himself
Does anyone else wonder Tolkien would've been like even say in casual conversation? Given the way his mind worked in writing, he seems to have dwelt--not in any negative way--in the stories and world... |

Perhaps--it's just, what is the "canon" mythology in the LOTR universe? Is the released Silmarillion "canon"? Also, I read something about JRRT tinkering with the idea of Gandalf being a... |

Will a "definitive" version of The Silmarillion ever be released?
Do you think there will ever come a time when a more 'definitive' version of The Silmarillion--more in line with Tolkien's later/exact thoughts, with perhaps some of the tales expanded as much as... |

Hmm...good points. Not to go off on a tangent, but one thing I love about Tolkien's world is that while he does explain a lot (especially in The Silmarillion and other writings), not everything is... |

"The Necromancer"
A question: Why did Sauron take on the identity of the "Necromancer"? I ask because commonly, a "Necromancer" is thought to be one with the power to raise the dead--In fiction usually a dark, evil... |

Elrond in PJ's LotR
How do you feel about the portrayal of Elrond in Peter Jackson's films? Is he as you imagined him to be, both in appearance and personality? There is one character whom I think was PERFECTLY... |

Bombadil: One of the Blue Wizards?
A lot of theories have been offered up as to what exactly Tom Bombadil was. Some say he was an Ainur, others say simply a spirit, others say a living manifestation of Middle Earth (basically like a... |

I have a question about Galadriel. I have not read the books in a while, but in the films, when Frodo offers her the Ring, she states that her heart has indeed long desired it. Is this so in the... |
