Ryan_Wizard_Prince, welcome and thanks for posting. Think that you jumped ahead a bit, but that's okay.
It seems with Aragorn at one moment he thinks that Helm's Deep is a mistake, but then defends the position that Theoden has taken. As Theoden has about 200 (more or less) soldiers with him at this time, he doesn't have many options, and to ride out and fight the enemy on the plains would be a faster way to get to his fathers.
