Interesting you call it that in Germany... from abiturus I guess, like we have in Finlad. Those getting their matriculation examination from a senior secondary High-school are called abis in Finland as well.

And my God how the Finnish abiturients drink... (says one who has taken part into something like 11 abi-cruises on a ship after their school ends, by the request of my students...)
