That's Merry muttering to himself, as Eowyn tells Theoden that Aragorn (& Legolas & Gimli et al) have taken the Paths of the Dead. Merry has been left behind by the Fellowship. (Gandalf & Pippin have ridden ahead to Minas Tirith, and of course Frodo & Sam have gone to, well, we won't speak of it.)
