If you don't look at it as ironic, then just don't discuss it, but if you do, go ahead and discuss it if you want.

I think it's valid, on a thread discussing irony in LotR to discuss whether examples put forward are ironic or not.

And anyway, I was kind of agreeing with you. I was trying to show how the dagger (or more particularly the use to which it is put) can be considered ironic.
