Olorin, I'm sure the dawnless day was merely the result of Sauron causing Mt. Doom to erupt, ie the smoke from it blocked the sun.
To whoever said that they thought Mt. Doom wa constantly erupting - it's not. I recall somebody saying something along the lines of: the mountain of fire has woken again, implying that it was dormant for a period before that.
