It sounds like it could be one of the &quot;many songs&quot; made about the duel between Glorfindel and the Balrog in Cirith Thoronath, one written as though Thorondor was the speaker. If this guess were right, the speaker could be any of the refugees with Tuor.
Or it could be Thorondor's own &quot;tidings&quot; about the death of Fingolfin about which elves made no song. Or even his tidings to Turgon about the death of Thingol.
Fingolfin's death seems to me to fit the lines best.
