Ah, but Gandalf was The White by then! Who else then? Gandalf had many enemies... Could it be the Goblins of the Misty Mountains after Gandalf's (and Thorin & Co's) rescue by the eagles? Saruman after Gandalf was rescued (again) by an eagle from Orthanc? Perhaps Gollum after Gandalf had "wrung the truth from him" in Mirkwood? The Nazgûl after their run-in with Gandalf at Weathertop?
