Just from my experience, while new players do tend to lose a lot at tournaments, it's often a very good place to meet people, trade, and learn how to build better decks. And usually the more experienced players already have way too many commons and uncommons, and will give new players cards they don't need from the prize support for free. Always a good way to start building up your collection. Some people will even give you specific commons and uncommons if you ask for them, and they happen to have them on them.

Also, League Nights are another great way to get yourself better acquainted with the game, and great fun besides.
