I say Third Age, towards the end.

The most interesting things happened then; the muster of Sauron's allies, the reappearence of the Ring, Gondor's hopeless war against the East, Arnor restored, closely-packed action with the Dunedain and the Ringwraiths, Gandalf's revealing of power and all that.
