There are plenty of threads on Sauron, Durin's Bane and the possibility of their teaming up. Use the search function to see many forum members' thoughts on that matter.
Otherwise, there apparently were not any other balrogs left. There were no dragons left strong enough to make good soldiers - Smaug was wiped out by Gandalf's plan on purpose because he was the last dangerous dragon left. Melkor was mightiest being ever to inhabit Arda. That's a big part of it - Sauron was but his 'apprentice.' Anything he did was only in vain attempt to replicate the original Dark Lord. However vast it was, I don't think Sauron's knowledge ever grasped all that Melkor knew. Also, it's quite possible that some evil creatures (including balrogs *if* there had been any others left) defied Sauron and took him not as Morgoth's heir. They could disobey Sauron and still keep their allegiance to their original commander, Morgoth. Myths Transformed: Quote:
