Scariest movie character is harder to choose. Hmm... I'd have to say Lurtz. Not only is he physically freaky, but any living creature that actually pushes itself onto a sword blade and looks like they ENJOY it need some serious help.

I had to watch the movie a couple times before I even realized the guy was deliberately impaling himself. It's just so outrageous. And he pulls that dagger out of his own meaty thigh--and licks it. Nice.
The first time I saw Gollum and heard his voice, I was disturbed. In TTT I was disturbed again. It creeps me out how thin he is and his eyes look like they're gonna pop out. And I like Gollum. But this think writhing about, his knobby spine sticking out, freaks me out most.

Did Lurtz look like he was enjoying impaling himself? It looked to me more of a mocking face than one of enjoyment, but the thing with the knife is slightly twisted.

hi, I'm very new here...so this message will probably single-handedly manage to crash the entire website...sorry, my paranoia about technical things is obviously affecting me too much! Anyway, all I wanted to say was that after watching The Matrix, it is impossible for me not to be freaked out by Elrond...thoughts of Agent Smith haunt me wherever I go...Ahh...does any1 else find this, or am I the only one? The character that creeped me out the most was Frodo. The way that he attacked Sam when he came to help him, and the look on his face, I would have ran like frickin' lightning! And when ever the Nazgul fly over, Frodo gets the wraith look goin on.

Elrond scares me anyway, but the fact that Hugo Weaving was also in the Matrix didn't really help.

Could you give a reason, please? I still think that whoever says T.B. is scary is crazy, but at least they gave a reason.
And do you mean book- or movie-wise? ~ Elentari II

Agreed, Frodo has pretty scary eyes. That blue can't be natural, yet he swears it is!

Frodo's blue eyes are indeed natural. What is unnatural is that ENTIRE SCENES were changed, with the swipe of a mouse, to nighttime. You can see this being done on the Extended Edition CD, special features. I believe it was a Lorien scene but I'm not ceratin; however, they change it from daytime to dark, and in those scenes, as the entire scene darkens, Frodo's eyes end up looking basically purple.
Not his fault.

purple?! I never noticed that-must look again...
Arwen isn't exactly scary, but it is quite sad that she usurped Glorfindel in the movie, at least to me it is.

The scariest characters are the ring wraiths. Scarier than Sauron and all them. Why?
I've never had a nightmare before, then one night, I had a one about them chasing me and the only place to hide was a classroom made of glass. I know, kind of stupid, but I was genually scared. That's why their the scariest.

Purple?!?! Must watch again! Purple eyes are actually possible, I think. It's sort of blue but they look basically purple. That's really cool. And what do so many people have aginst Sam? Could someone please answer that? What's so evil about him? Now Gollum... He's just pure evil. So Sam is right about Gollum, thus proving that he is not evil.

Sam? *thinks about it* For someone who appears to be so... well, not that tough... um... *tries desperately to think of a word*
well, anyway... he can be surprisingly um... 'grrr' at times. Sorry, half the words in my vocabulary, ie. the half I wanted right then, seem to have vanished. And I'm not actually scared of Sam... *thinks about the 'grrr' moments...* okay, I am a little scared of Sam.

The absolutely scariest character in the movie would have to be Gollum! I mean a ugly looking creature with a split personality: one second trying to kill you the next giving you dead rabbits saying "Nice master" now that would freak me out! Dont you agree?

In the movies, I would have to go with the people who said Lurtz. That is one messed up character.
In the books, I would have to say (Don't kill me, Meela!) Denethor. I mean, the guy burns himself, alive, and tries to do it to his son, too. And the thing about Elijah's eyes...well, two of my sisters have eyes that color, only they don't have black hair. |

Galadriel is quite eerie, not scary but Frodo really freaks me out with that whole *roll back my eyes* thing.
I wonder how he does it......

I would have to say that Bilbo is very scary! That innocent smile *shudder* and his hobbit like wisdom. Watch out! Bilbo isn't all he's cracked up to be.

Bilbo, yes! That moment where he goes all Gollum-ish is really scary. I can't help admiring Frodo's bravery there, I would have been half-way back to the Shire, still screaming!

I wonder why nobody mentioned Grima Wormtongue. He really creeped me out in the movie.

I wasn't really scared of anybody... the Uruk hai, Grima, Gollum, and Sauron kinda' gave me the creeps. No offense to any Wormtongue fans... but Eomer should have killed him when he had the chance in my opinion. The Nazgul were kinda' freaky and the Ring was too...
Saruman didn't scare me at all... in fact I thought it was kinda' funny to see "Count Dooku" playing a wizard. (Yeah, I'm a huge Star Wars fan). [ July 22, 2003: Message edited by: Elrowen Greenleaf ]

strange, strange...How can you possibly think that Frodo or legolas is a scary character???
I haven't read the whole thread, but what definitely scared me the most, is the eye of Sauron And the voice that comes along with it! and also, the one black rider that looks for the hobbits when they are hiding behind the tree...

Well, let's see, Legolas could be scary, if you were an orc on the wrong side of his bow! His movements are actually so precise, quick and devastating that yes, if I had to face Legolas in battle, I'd be scared! I can see a young orcling having a nightmare about an elf that he sees in the distance in a forest and all of a sudden, the elf is upon him, arrow in skull..too late! The Elf of Death! BWAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! It depends on your POV, I suppose!
And I must say Denethor is scary, but he is also quite fascinating; everyone thinks he is like Boromir, just because he favors Boromir, but his learnedness in lore and his responsibility to his station, are very Faramir-like; but he is rotted from within by Sauron, his great knowledge and powerful personality twisted into an equally powerful despair. Anyone under his command would quail at his destructive madness! (Except Pippin! Go Pippin!) Denethor reminds me of a man with a pressure switch bomb in his hand; really scary! It really took an extraordinary effort to defuse him! And about Frodo being scary--when he's under the Ring's influence, yes, he's scary! But I find myself feeling more scared FOR him than OF him. The fear coming from Frodo and that I share in is a very spiritual fear, a fear of being overcome by an unknowable evil, like looking into the eyes of a schizophrenic person or being afraid you are going mad yourself. But the eyes are scary in that mad way. I did notice they looked purple in the extended VHS version of FOTR, but passed it off to lighting (light to dark scene--that was odd in itself!). I'm sure I'll think of more scary characters...bye for now! Cheers, Lyta

I will agree that the moment when Gandalf reaches for the ring on the floor of Bag end and the eye appears is the only bit of the film that scared me enough to make me jump about a foot in the air.
