I agree wholeheartedly with what Luthein Tinuviel said. The first time I tried to read the Silmarillion I quit early on. But I knew it was important to understanding Middle Earth so I went back at it. I got through the early part by reading a few pages at a time and thinking about and digesting them. It worked. And there are some terrific stories later on. Absolutely a must for anyone who wishes to understand what Middle Earth is all about. Persevere!!!
