The other cynicist makes a guess: a lie.

"Men are ensnared - by lies
kingdoms are destroyed - by men ensnared by lies
plans are ruined - by men believing the lie instead of the truth
love is broken - by lie told by/of the loved one
wars are fought - because of lies... (rather well timed reminder I'd say)
The wielder of the weapon
escapes without harm... - all too often."
