Even my mother told me I was being a fool, that I would never be what I wished to be out there. No one wanted to speak to me after that except for Geriber, Ojo and Mergo, the other three who wanted to learn magic, too. But after we left, we never met a single person who was kind to us, after they learned what we were and what we wanted to do. You and Champignonne were the first ones to show me any kindness, in countless years," he broke off, looking for a response. "I do care, Ellie. Really, I do."
